Gundam Wing Fan Fiction ❯ Fallen Angels, Broken Hearts ❯ Ch 7 ( Chapter 7 )

The group finally made it to Tokyo, and nobody died. Heero was still ignoring everyone, reverting back to his old self as seconds ticked by. Tension still ran in the quintet, as no one was real sure who to blame for what.
Slowly they made their path through the Japanese city, asking around if anyone had seen a girl of Li's description or attitude. Sadly, the Japanese noticed little.
After another unsuccessful sweep through a down-town shop area, the group gathered to plot the next area to attack.
That was when Wufei went down.
Lou watched in shock as the force of the bullet's impact sent him sprawling to the ground, clutching his crimson-streaming side in pain.
"Wufei!" She started to run over to him, but he quickly motioned for her to stay away.
"Lou, someone's attacking us, it's not safe to venture out in the open!" Quatre told her.
She nodded, watching as Wufei managed to pick himself up off the ground and stumble over to them.
Soon as Wufei was over to the group, minus a mad Heero already dashing down the alley with guns drawn, looking for the shooter, Lou had him supported between Quatre and Trowa and was scrutinizing the wound.
The Chinese dragon-man squirmed when Lou's finger poked at the tender tears of flesh.
"Wuf, the bullet is still in you. We need to find somewhere where I can get it out." Her eyes were tender and sorrowful; this was becoming an all too real game of cat and mouse, life and death.
His nod was gruff, ignoring the pain as much as possible. They had run into this during that era so long ago many times, fighting hurt and dying, having pain and blood stain their vision.
"'Fei, stay awake, you know better." Lou shook his torso in a light movement, "Don't close your eyes."
Turning rapidly, Quatre looked for Heero. But the angered reverted solider had disappeared.
Duo saw a sudden change come over Ryo. Instead of the stubborn attitude she had before about resting and staying off her feet, Ryo happily obliged anytime Duo suggested for her to relax, or to get off her feet that day. It was a good change, yes, but he wondered what had caused it.
After catching her time and time again hiding her phone when he entered the room, he decided to see what she was doing. During her nap, he took her phone from the nightstand and flipped it open. He searched it for a few minutes finding nothing, then went to text messages.
The only message she had saved was from an unidentified number. He clicked to read it and nearly dropped the phone when it opened. He read it several times then immediately called Lou.
Lou jumped as her pants began to vibrate.
Grabbing her phone with bloody hands, she flipped it open. "This had better be important!"
"Sis?" Duo cocked an eyebrow attentively.
"Duo, Wufei was just shot by these damn terrorists. What is the matter?" Her Israeli accent was more predominant in her stress.
"Ryo has a message on her phone from Li. She sent it recently."
"For the love of-" Lou shoved her phone to Quatre and jabbed Wufei hard in the side where he was wounded, "Weakling, I said stay awake."
Duo heard a muffled shout of pain.
"Duo, what's going on?" Quatre asked as Lou dealt with Wufei.
"Li sent a text message to Ryo. I'm going to try and trace it. She promised to be back before the baby is born. Do you think she'll really be back?"
Quatre hesitated a moment before answering. "If she had told anyone else that, I would doubt it, but you have to remember she said this to Ryo. Li may not be the most honest of us, but she would do everything in her power to upkeep a promise she made to her sister. So yes, I think she will."
Wufei hissed at Lou as the trio moved him down the alley, looking for some place to rest and figure out where to stay.
Duo thought about what Quatre had said, "I think you may be right."
"Li wouldn't lie to Ryo, something as important as that would break Ryo and she doesn't want that in the least. She loves her sister no matter what, and I think that may be Li's only weakness."
"Quatre, shut up, you don't know who may be listening." Lou glared sharply as she kept Wufei's torso steady to alleviate some of the shaking as the group moved.
"She is right Q." Duo sighed, "I will trace the message and then call you guys back." He almost bid his farewell before curiosity got the best of him, "What is going on?"
"Wufei was shot Duo, and it is pretty rough. That is why Lou is snappy."
"I am not snappy, I am worried."
"Ow, woman, that hurt." Wufei muttered the words darkly and twisted to get away from her clench. "Just put me down already, this onna is driving me into death."
"I am driving you nowhere. I think you are going to make me crazy. You are like a woman, mood swinging every which way."
"Don't say that insulting-"
"CHILDREN!" Trowa looked appalled, "Chang is bleeding. And you two bicker? Leigh Lou, just fix him so we can move on."
Quatre almost laughed, "Duo, call us back. I got to go."
Li heard a slight creak of floorboards and froze. She'd been found. She slowly slipped one of the guns out of her jacket and crept toward the door. She found the light switch and with a slight click the room was plunged into darkness. She stood, waiting. The door flung open and a figure came through stealthily, a figure she knew. It was Cody. At the sight of her Cody froze, narrowing her eyes in the darkness.
"Well, look who it is," Li murmured.
When the lights flashed off, Cody had her gun up and aimed, ready to fire the minute she confirmed the target. She had seen movement right before the lights had went off and stood there, relying on her senses. And when the figure spoke...she froze.
"Well, look who it is."
That was Li's voice. She recognized it the minute she heard it and her eyes narrowed, her hands trembling on her gun as she didn't take her aim down, watching closely.
"I suppose you weren't even going to drop to check on your sister, considering she's within at least two months of the delivery," She replied in a emotionless tone, one so unlike her or what person she had been two to three years ago. To her, she needed to show the woman in front of her exactly what she had caused. But the intense pain she felt was overshadowed by the emptiness; by something else beneath her that had made the colors drain away...make her sick to her stomach with loathing...
Kamiya's stay together. Always.
'Hypocrite,' She thought of what had been said years ago but stayed standing there, bracing herself for whatever would be said or heard.
There was a silence in which Cody could well imagine the calm glare of reproach sent her way. That was fine with her, Li deserved every word.
"Don't be stupid." Li replied stoically, " Not even I would do that to her. I made a promise to Ryo and I intend to keep it."
"I didn't think you held promises in high regard," Cody countered, "Considering how many you've broken in the past. An oath from your lips wouldn't hold much worth to me." She steadied her hold on the gun, hating herself for the trembling.
"Oh, really. I'll keep that in mind. But my sister seems to still have faith in me, and I would be a fool to throw that away, no matter what you believe. I'm not so heartless a person as to miss the birth of my nephew."
"And yet evidence seems to suggest otherwise."
Li gave a cold smile, "Well, my absence seems to have greatly molded your opinion of me, Cody, not that I didn't expect it to. Tell me, do you hate me now? Most in your position would."
Cody shook her head and a dark chuckle left her lips, "hate you? Li - do you take me for a pathetic little girl still? You've been gone almost four years and you don't even let there be a chance of such."
Her hand steadied as dark leaked from her eye casting dangerous intentions in her shadows. It wasn't hate, nor was it understanding.
"That does not answer my question."
Cody drew a blade from beneath her boot, her voice so quiet that it was barely heard, "I know you are hurt, but I will not pause to disarm you if you won't listen to me."
There was a sigh from Li in the darkness. She knew full well that in her current condition, if Cody chose to attack her in her anger Li would stand no chance. She was already tired from dealing with her. "Cody, I don't have time for this."
"Well, you are going to have to make time." Cody hissed angrily in return, "Because I am sick of the way you have been running off to do your own thing and leaving the rest of us in the dark. I don't care what you want, because you are not going anywhere. You are going to stay right here and explain yourself, and then you are coming back with me to headquarters where you are going to apologize to Ryo and everyone else this has affected, not to mention me."
Li glared at her, "Cody, there is a lot more going on here than you know, don't assume you are the only one who is hurt. I'm sorry if you're angry but I cannot go back right now, I have things I need to do. Don't get in my way or else."
Without another word Cody lunged at Li. Li had a moments notice to dodge the first attack and get in her own solid punch before Cody's connected to her face. Cody gave her two seconds to recover before kneeing her hard in the gut and, grabbing Li by the collar, slamming her up against the wall.
"That was foolish, cuz." Cody said softly, "You knew you had no chance, not in your shape."
"I've still got my pride." Li retorted.
"And look where it's gotten you now." Cody was getting angrier, and they both knew that if they pushed the matter further it might come to true blows. They were staring angrily into each other's eyes when the door opened and the light was flipped on. They both jerked and looked to the doorway to find a wide-eyed Kara, holding her purse and looking shocked at the scene before her.
Kara gaped at Cody, "Cody? What are you- Why are you - Who is that?"
Duo was typing furiously on his laptop as Ryo slept beside him. He was trying his best to sift through the hundreds of crossed connections from the text message sent to Ryo. The sender had been withheld so he first had to find out if it was sent from a phone or a computer.
After two hours he narrowed it down to a computer. He kept searching, pulling apart the false trails and road blocks he was left with a laptop. A laptop which, at the moment of the text message being sent, was in space. He quickly pulled up the flight schedules of transports and found only one. It was headed to colony S3450. It was headed home.
Duo took another thirty minutes hacking his way to Li's mailing system, no doubt she'd be alerted. Which was perfect because she'd get his message that much sooner.
Hey Li, I know you're probably mad at me for hacking your computer right now, but I felt that I had to. I know I've screwed up a lot in the past and I'm not your favorite person and I usually don't say the right thing and I have the sensitivity of a blunt axe, but I've tried. You know I love Ryo with all my heart and would do anything in the world for her, and that's why you don't hate me. For her sake, otherwise we'd probably be at each other's throats like you and Cody are sometimes. Or at least that's what I think. We've never been real close and I'm sorry for that. While I've tried, I haven't tried hard enough. I always gave up halfway, letting pride get in the way and causing a rift between us that now is getting bigger each day we do nothing about it. Li, Ryo isn't the only one who wishes you home. She's not the only one who can see the good in you that you're running from.Everyone else is running around angry with you, calling you selfish and planning how they are going to kick you when you come back. No one is really stopping and thinking about you. Thinking that maybe you're not being selfish, that you're not trying to play the victim, that there is another reason you're running besides the guys trying to kill us. You're scared. I remember another girl talk about you the same way, looking up to you as a role model, describing the good person within you, one that, at the time, I thought you didn't have. You didn't even see it, but Ryo did.She used to spend hours talking about how one day you didn't blow up at Cody as much as you could have, or you didn't have the cold look in your eyes for a whole five minutes. She saw you, Li, and I know she told you that. I think that's what has kept you away all these years. You're trying to see what Ryo sees. It's hard. The most difficult judge of you is you. Yet somehow, Ryo is the one who can see and show us that we are good. We're all... human.Li, please, come home. You'll never see yourself as long as you’re away. You'll never see the sister who Ryo adores. You'll never see the human inside that hard exterior. You are human, Li, I've seen it. I've seen the beautiful person Ryo used to tell me about. The one who only comes out when she thinks no one is watching and is looking for someone to take her hand and lead her home.Li, I'm holding out my hand, not for Ryo's sake, but because I know you can become the person you want to be who can make Ryo proud. Come home, Li, and when you get here go ahead and beat the crap out of me for being such a girl. I'll just be glad you ended your waltz with Death and took the challenge of a tango with Life. Trust me, it's a hard choice to make, but you won't be alone. Ryo and I will be here for you. We'll show you a little at a time what we see when we look at you.loveyour brother-in-lawDuo Maxwell
Cody looked at Kara but didn't drop her tight hold on Li's collar, speaking barely under her tone, "We were just having...a discussion."
Sliding the knife back into its holder, she reached over and began to disarm Li, taking out several guns and knifes and sliding them far away. Kara stood still where she was, watching them silently, "You didn't answer my question- what's going on?"
"Nothing," Cody murmured and let go of Li, the weakened girl dropping to the floor. With a sweep of her hand, the red head looked over at Kara without a gun or any weapon in her grasp, "I came over to check on Heero's apartment."
"I am his girlfriend so I had it taken care of."
Li stood up barely, not saying anything but she was glaring and trying to look for a way out.
"Well," Cody said sternly, "He obviously wanted me to double check because he called me."
Kara seemed to accept this, but she still seemed to be more than a little peeved. "And for the other question, who is that?" She gestured, and there was slight jealousy in her tone. "And why did she have so many weapons? What is going on here?"
Li straightened, maintaining her dignity though she was overcome by pain. She gave Kara a level look, "Who I am is, quite frankly, none of your business." Her words were sharp.
After sending the message to Li, Duo dialed Heero's phone number.
"Maxwell this isn't the best time..." Heero skipped the hello and seemed to be breathing a little harder than usual.
"Heero, I think I found Li. She's headed home." Duo said.
There was a pause. "What do you mean?"
"I traced the text message on Ryo's phone back to Li's laptop. She was on a transport headed back to our colony."
"She's getting weapons." Heero said.
"Where would she go?"
"My apartment."
Duo paled. "Cody went over there to check up on it. What if they're there at the same time?"
"I'll head over there. Call Lou, we got separated."
"You got separated? What happened?"
"We got attacked, and i took off after the guy who got Wufei." Duo now recognized Heero's heavy breathing as the labored breaths of one who had been running at a very high speed for a time.
"You still on his trail?" Duo asked.
"No, I'm losing him. But that doesn't matter, I'm heading towards the transports. tell Lou I'll meet her at the colony." Heero's words were level.
"You sure that's a good idea, bud? I think you should wait for them so you can all head over together."
"No."
Duo sighed. "Alright. Bye." He pushed end and pressed the speed dial for Lou.
"Lou, don't yell at me, but... HeeroisheadedtohisapartmentbecausewethinkLiisheadedthereandherefusedtowaitf oryou." Duo inhaled and exhaled a few times to allow his lungs to catch up.
"HE WHAT?"
Lou closed her eyes and handed her phone back to Quatre after saying one thing, "If Wufei dies, I blame him."
Wufei glared at the small woman, "I will not die just because someone shot me."
"Is that why you keep shaking in and out of consciousness?" THe sarcasm was hard, "Come on now, we have to beat Heero to the transports."
Quatre held the phone, "Duo, why do you keep calling with bad news?"
"Would you rather I not call at all and just keep the secrets to myself? I'm already having to keep it from Ryo, because she'll be hurt that Li was so close and didn't come see her. She'll act like nothing's wrong, but you know she'll be hurt. I can't lie to you guys."
Quatre shrugged, as he understood completely. "Don't let anything stupid happen and I will calm your sister down. I think right now she is just over worried because Heero disappeared and Wufei won't stop bleeding."
"I'll keep an eye on Heero. You guys worry about Wufei, don't push him too hard. If I have to, I'll meet Heero at his apartment. Tell Lou, that'll I'll help her anyway I can."
Slowly they made their path through the Japanese city, asking around if anyone had seen a girl of Li's description or attitude. Sadly, the Japanese noticed little.
After another unsuccessful sweep through a down-town shop area, the group gathered to plot the next area to attack.
