By the time three hours had passed Duo's hand was a deep shade of purple , and soft green finger prints dotted his palm.Yet Ryo still refused medication. She had read somewhere it could hurt the baby.
"Angel, please. It will make you feel better." Duo almost pleaded as he winced. Now he thought he was in more pain, as she was death vicing his hand every two and half minutes.
Lou laughed at the deadly look Ryo gave. Laughed internally, as Ryo seemed to be on a war path.
"Do you want something else to go wrong and for something to happen to the baby Duo? No. You don't and I don't. Besides, I am fine." Ryo smiled and squeezed his hand again. Lou admired her threshold for pain.
Quatre had come in a while back and assumed the job of sitting on Ryo's other side. Older brother duty he decided. Besides, Heero was sitting in with Cody and Li, and Trowa was watching Wufei. The younger doctor, a man named Ray Barnett, was still sticking around to help out.
Trowa sauntered into the room silently, smiling lightly at Duo before leaning over to Lou. "Wufei is crashing." Was the whispered sentiment.
As not to alarm the pregnant lady the two left the room quietly. Lou stopped her new doctor friend.
"Ever deliver a baby Ray?"
The doctor smirked and lightly shook his head. "Can't say I have Cheng."
"Today is your lucky day. Go in there and watch Ryo. One of my men is crashing. If anything starts going funny and I can't stabilize, call Heero in. He knows what he is doing."
Lou made her way to Wufei's room to find the man convulsing and reacting violently. Her heart jumped to her throat. "Trowa, pump in more antibiotics." She pulled out a syringe with morphine in it, a high dosage, to relax the convulsing muscles. She knew if this didn't get stopped Fei could die.

Dr. Ray Barnett, a man with dark hair and mysterious eyes, walked into the homey room where the Maxwell clan was held. What he wasn't expecting was for a small plate that held a cup seconds before to come flying at his head.
He was eternally thankful for those many hours he had spent in the ER, and the wonders they had done to his reflexes, when he was able to barely duck the lethal plate that was hell-bent on his face. He leaned against the wall, momentarily shocked, as Duo called, "Watch out," More than a little too late.
Ray nodded lightly and then shook his head. What was it with pregnant women and throwing things?
"Hello. I am Dr. Ray Barnett. Pal of Leigh Lou's it seems. She asked me to come check on you Ryo." He smiled cheekily. "You seem...in pain. Can I get you something for that?"
She sent him a glare that, at that moment in time, could most definitely rival Li's, "How many times do I have to tell you people! No! I will not take something that could harm my baby!" She practically screeched in his direction.
He winced, "I see."
Duo shrugged and flexed his bruised hand. "She is anti-doctors. Sorry."
Ray shrugged. "So we sit this one out I suppose. Nature will run its course. Is there anything else I can get you?" This is why he was an ER doctor, not Labor and Delivery.
Ryo looked at him defiantly. "No." She gritted her teeth. "I'm fine. Thanks." She squeezed Duo's hand extra hard that last time, but bit back a cry. She did not like this guy and she wasn't about to let him see how much pain she was really in.
Ray gave her an amused look. "Not many people like me, but few ever hold their resentment in that much control. You must be some lady Ryo." He walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, "But in all honesty, I am a doctor and like me or not, I am here to help you. Please be honest with me."
Ryo shook her head. "Where. Is. Lou?" She asked in short quick sentences.
"Making sure your friend doesn't die. Something I can't do because I am not as well versed in poisons and warfare." He shrugged, "I can leave and put your baby in even more danger for not having a doctor at all."
Ryo sent him the fiercest death glare anyone in the room had ever witnessed. "Stop being a smart ass and do your damn job."
"I can't really. You are making it impossible Mrs. Maxwell. Honestly at this moment you are putting your baby in more danger than I ever could. All I want to do is my job." His nonchalance was annoying, even to him. But it was working.
"Alright fine, you want to know how much pain I'm in? I've nearly broken my husband's hand, I feel like my insides are about to be ripped-" She bit back another scream. "-out, and you and your sarcastic remarks are not HELPING!" The last word ended with another contraction and Ryo gave up holding anything back and cried out in pain, loud enough that she thought Li could probably hear her.
Ray had to hide his smile of victory. "If I told you I could give you a local anesthetic that would no way harm the baby would you take it?"
Ryo glanced at Duo, who was nodding his head in short movements. "O-okay.."
"I promise you and your baby will be fine Mrs. Maxwell. Just trust me. Your friend Leigh Lou already does." His smile was true, and soon Ryo felt no pain.

Meanwhile Lou had pumped enough morphine into Wufei to kill a baby elephant and enough anti-biotics to sterilize a carcass. But it wasn't helping, much, at all.
"DAMN." Lou sighed as she bit the word out. This was not looking good.
Trowa ran the back of his hand wearily over his eyes. "We have to keep trying. For Wufei, and for Cody. C'mon, Lou."

Ryo looked at Duo's hand, touching it lightly as he winced. "Honey, I am so sorry..." She kissed it lightly. And then turned to the doctor "Is there anything you can do?"
Ray shrugged lightly, "You tell me."

"Damn it Wufei. You cowardly moron, don't do this." The words were sharp, but enough to make the convulsions stop.
Lou stared, "IF that was all I had to do...er."
Trowa dared a chuckle as Lou darted back out to check on Ryo
"Wufei, for once I am grateful that pride and honor still mean more to you than anything else . . . " Trowa chuckled once more, tired yet relieved.

At that same moment in time, it was a great understatement to say that Li was in a bad mood. A serious understatement.
She had slept deeply for the first time in a long while, feeling at peace, because she had finally been able to explain herself to her sister. She had seen Ryo again, and that was all that mattered.
The moment of happiness was interrupted when she woke up. Before she even opened her eyes she sensed the presence of someone else in the room, besides Cody. She almost frowned, but stopped herself. She didn't exactly know why she was being so careful, but it was instinct, so she obeyed.
She could hear the breathing of someone beside her, and from the deep breaths, it was a male. She felt her heart immediately tighten like someone had grabbed a hold of it and squeezed.
Life could sometimes be so cruel.
Heero leaned back in his chair, momentarily uncomfortable. He had been sitting in it for hours, and his back was sore. He had told Lou that he would stay with Li and Cody while she was taking care of Ryo, and so he had. Cody had woken up earlier, but she had been dazed and not entirely sure of her surroundings. She had passed out after a few minutes, and during that time he hadn't had the heart to tell her about Wufei.
Li had gone back to sleep after speaking with Ryo. Ryo had forced him to wait outside while they talked, saying she wanted to speak to her alone. He had been able to hear snatches of her voice at times, and the reassurance that she was seemingly out of danger had made him feel better than he had felt in a very long time. When he had been allowed back in Li was already asleep again, and he had let her rest, knowing she needed it.
It had been hours, though, and sometimes he wondered. Wondered if she was really still asleep, or just faking it. It would be like her, avoiding having to speak with him. He sighed. Kara still hadn't called him, and though he'd dialed her number a thousand times she never picked up. He was starting to grow worried. Why had she left the hospital in the first place?
She must have been terrified, He reassured himself, She was probably afraid of being found in the hospital by the same people who attacked her, and fled, panicked.
Though the words made him feel better, he still wished he had some proof that she was okay.

Wufei was groggy, but remembered the searing pain and uncontrollable shaking he was a part of a bit earlier. Lucky for him his mind still had enough control to make the shaking stop after a command and accusation of being a coward.
If only he could reach out and talk to Lou. Or Trowa.

Lou smiled at the doorway into the small room. Ray was a part of an animated conversation with Duo, who's hand was now bandaged and Ryo was smiling and lightly laughing with Quatre. Relief rushed through Lou, maybe some things would turn out okay.
"Doing okay kiddo?" She ruffled Ryo's hair and sat next to Ray on the bed. "This monster giving you trouble Ray?"
"Yes, I am. Loads of trouble." Ryo smiled quite proud of herself.
"This woman here has more spirit in her than any I've ever seen. If I hadn't seen that Kamiya woman already beginning to recover, I'd never believe someone could have so much control and tolerance for pain. These women are amazing." He smiled.
"Have to be. You can't save the world-" Duo's good hand clamped over Ryo's mouth.
Lou smiled smoothly at Ray. "Drugs always make Ryo a little loopy. She tends to think she is someone kindred to Wonder Woman. Why don't you go hang with Trowa and Heero. Relieve Heero for a while, eh?"
Ray gave the Israeli an odd look, but did as she asked. As soon as the door shut Duo removed his hand, and Ryo sighed. "Honey, you can't go and tell everyone what we do." Lou chided gently.
Ryo looked confused, "Why not? We are who we are and quite famous. Everyone knows us anyway."
"Ray is from a secluded part of America. Do you want Solo's birth in tabloids?"
She paused, thinking. "No... How is Li doing?"
Heero entered then. "She's asleep."
Lou smiled at him, and patted the seat next to her. Seemed someone had to be non-angst and sane besides the pregnant person.
In fact she and Quatre had been in the same room for a while and he just hadn't spoken. This was nice. Getting along.
Ryo sighed, "I wish she was awake."
'Angel, she couldn't be in here anyways. We don’t know what bacterial infections she could be carrying and we don’t want to chance anything with the baby." Duo kissed her forehead, still cradling his hand.
Ryo sighed, "How long is this going to take? I thought he was ready..."
Lou chuckled, "Funny thing about babies. They do this on their own time." She stood, "I'll be back."
Just then Heero's phone rang. They all froze as he pulled it out, an incredulous look on his face. "It's Kara." He immediately left the room and before the door closed they heard "Hello? Kara, where have you -"
Ryo gave the door a dark look that she obviously didn't intend for them to see.
Lou smiled lightly andfollowed Heero out of the room. "Ask her where the hell she is, and then figure out what you will do with it." She whispered sharply, "If you aren't going to be a help here, leave. You cause Li to be nervous. Or angry.,"
He glared, "You have no right to tell me how to handle my girlfriend, Leigh Lou Cheng. I will handle this on my own time."
"I don't care who you think you are Heero Yuy. I have done my share of hurting and yelling today. Right now we have three members down, possibly four if Ryo doesn't come out okay, and I am laying a 500 dollar bet it ties back to your 'girlfriend.' Fix it Mr. High and Mighty." She glared with equal ice and death.
"Don't you tell me you think she caused all of this! There is no way she could be connected to this!" His voice was rising higher in anger at the accusation.
"Really?" Lou snickered, "Getting rusty in your peaceful age. Or maybe I am just cynical. Fix it or leave."
Heero stormed out, taking Kara off hold and talking to her.
Lou shook her head, eyes following him as he stalked away, "Sometimes I wonder how Li could ever have put up with you for so long. . . "
Heero spun, Kara now listening to every word, realizing Li was still alive.
"You have no right to judge."
"OH, I am not judging. Pointing out your obvious and sudden case of super-ass-hole man, but not judging." Lou spun and went back into Ryo's room, leaving Heero with Kara hanging.
Just as Lou had her hand on the door handle, Duo threw it open. "Lou, Ryo's bleeding."
Throwing one more threatening ultimatum look at Heero, Lou disappeared.

LATER
Li laid in her bed (not that she could do anything else) wondering what was going on. Ryo had been gone for hours. Heero had left and Dr. Ray was asleep in his chair. She heard a voice in the hallway. It was Heero.
"Kara, why in the world did you leave the hospital? You scared me! I had no idea if you were okay or not!" he stated, his voice drifting in through the door.
Her hand clenched, nails digging painfully into her palm. Her chest hurt again, and she forced herself to calm down, not knowing how much her body could take at the moment. He was talking to her.
"Listen, I know you were scared, but leaving? How smart was that? You could have been killed! Why? What in the world? - Because I care about you, you idiot!"
Lou voice barked down the hall, "Take the drama outside Yuy. We don't need it." A door slammed, leaving Li further confused.

Inside the room Ryo occupied, Lou was barking orders at Duo, who was doing his best until finally she told him to go get Ray.

Duo glanced at Li as he entered the room. He then crossed to Ray and shook him violently. "We need you in Ryo's room. Now."
Li sat up, sending Duo a look, "What's wrong? What happened? Don't lie to me, Maxwell."
Duo paused. "Ryo... she's bleeding, a lot. Lou has her sedated so she doesn't freak out... but she just keeps bleeding. We may have to take her to the hospital and that's not exactly safe..."
Ray rolls his eyes. "I did not spend eleven years in the ER for nothing. Let me work."

Two Hours Later
Ryo had passed out seconds after her son was born and hadn't even seen him. Having already decided the name, Duo took pride in repeating it again for Lou to write on the birth certificate. "Solo Shinigami Maxwell." He grinned and smiled at his son.
Lou sighed the sigh only a little sister could muster, a sigh meaning I cannot believe you named my nephew after a Japanese God of Death.
Duo glared.
Ray was still working on saving Ryo's tender young life, and Lou was still giving Duo the look.
Suddenly yelling was heard from down the hall. Obviously Li had found Heero.
Heero's voice was the dominant one in the seemingly budding dispute. Lou sighed angrily. Great time for him to start this, of all things. If she wasn't busy she would give him a good piece of her mind . . .

Li had been determined after Duo left the room. No matter how injured she was there was no way she could just sit by while her sister's life was in danger. If she couldn't do anything then she could at least be there, whether Lou or the others liked it or not. She had somehow gotten herself out of her bed. After a while of rest, though she was barely healed, her spirits were higher. Seeing your sister after almost 4 years can do that to you. She could bear the pain, and screw doctor's orders. Didn't matter if she somehow reinjured herself, she could always recuperate for as long as needed after all of this was over.
She leaned tiredly against the wall, using it for her support, as she made her way towards the door. At least she was decently clothed. Her body screamed with every step she took, but she ignored it with the steel determination of a veteran soldier and pressed on. She finally reached the door and got through it, and began her slow way towards the adjoining room. She paused for a moment to catch her breath. She must be more injured than she had thought.
She was so immersed in her mission that she failed to hear the footsteps coming rapidly down the hallway, then stopping suddenly.
A familiar voice broke brutally through her thoughts, "What the hell are you doing?"
She glanced up, eyes half clouded by pain, and noticed Heero. She spared a moment for an ironic thought to cross her mind but then pushed it away. " . . . What does it look like?" She replied sarcastically, "I'm walking."
"Oh, really, I thought it was more along the lines of crawling." She almost winced at the equally sarcastic tint in his voice. He was pissed. "What are you doing out of bed? In your condition you shouldn't be walking for a few months, at the least."
"And since when were you my caretaker? I don't recall you being an MD." Li was already tired of talking to him, she could barely stand to be so close.
He flinched. "I may not be, but Lou is."
"And I give a damn . . . ?"
He got angry at her dismissal of him. "By the way, nice job of protecting Kara. Whatever happened to her has her so scared that she won't even talk to me."
"What are you insinuating . . .?" Li's voice took on a dangerous edge.
"You obviously didn't try very hard to protect her, that's all I'm saying. I never thought you were the type to be jealous, Li, but apparently I was wrong." His words cut a knife deep into her heart.
"What the . . . what the hell! How DARE you even imply that I would - !" She stumbled at the effort she was expending, her anger and hurt clouding her mind. How could he say such a thing to her? Couldn't he see that she had tried her very best to protect Kara? For his sake! She coughed, unable to finish her sentence. At that moment the door opened in front of them.
Ray cheered happily, "She's stabilized."
If Lou was more touchy-feely, she would have kissed him. Instead Duo patted his back and gripped Ryo's hand tightly, still holding the baby.
The world right for a moment Lou darted out into the hall to see what this dispute was about. "Yuy, didn't I tell you if you want to make problems just to leave, and that we would be better off without you doing anything?"
He glared at her, not replying. That was when Lou noticed Li, on the ground beside him. She grew angry. Whatever had happened, Yuy had obviously crossed way over the lines this time.
"Yuy, I want you out. Now. Go find your girlfriend or something. Anything but hang around here," She crossed to Li and spoke to her quietly before sending a final glare Heero's way.
He finally took the hint and stormed off.
"Li, next time you want to get out of bed, get a wheelchair. At least that way it's a little less painful. God knows nothing can keep you in that room." Lou smiled slightly. "Now what did Heero do?"
Li looked away. "I don't want to talk about it. Is Ryo okay?" She changed the subject quickly.
Lou smiled, "She'll be fine. She's stabilized and sleeping now. Your nephew is doing great, but he's going to get beat up when he gets to school. Honestly, I don't know why anyone would name their kid the Japanese word for 'god of death' anyway..."
Li couldn't help but smile, "No one but Duo and Ryo."
"Of course."
Li laughed and Lou took small pride in that moment.
Lou then went and got a wheel chair for Li, knowing if she sent her back to bed, it would not do any good. She wheeled her to Ryo's room.
Li sighed with relief when she saw Ryo sitting up in bed looking okay, and Lou allowed a small smile to cross her face.
"Li? What are you doing out of bed?" Ryo's voice held surprise and a slight hint of anger.
"Checking up on you," Li replied with a smirk.
"I'm fine. You though should not be out of bed. You almost died, I only had a baby."
The people in the room glanced at each other. It seemed she didn't remember what happened before the baby was born.
"Oh, really, because that's not what I heard," Li said, slightly amused at her sister.
Lou made a slicing motion across her throat. "Li heard what a beautiful child Solo is and how helpful Ray was. Quite eventful, eh?"
Li laughed at her friend, but didn't say any more about the incident. "Yes, very eventful." She smirked at Lou.
Ryo gave them both odd looks. "Liars. Oh well, I'll just get it out of Duo later. Now let me see my kid."
Duo looked wilted from the glare Lou was sending him. He recovered quickly and handed Solo to Ryo.

Kara gave a small smile as she hung up with Heero, once again feeling in control of her situation. True, her boss would be pissed at her when he found out the two would-be pilots that she had supposedly taken care of were still alive and breathing, but the most important thing was that her standing was still okay with Heero. She had not jeopardized her mission with him in the least, that one phone call had told her everything.
Kara's fingers traced the phone, and she dialed her boss's number, confident in her job. Her thoughts were elsewhere as she quickly soothed her boss's anger at her initial failure, cementing his belief in her once again as she explained her status and her plans. He became quickly complacent, assured she was still his flawless second in command. The male race was so easy to manipulate it was sad. Not even a Gundam Pilot could stand up to her. Heero Yuy had clearly been an example of that. He was one of the easiest marks she ever received, he had practically been handed to her on a silver platter.
She smirked once more, going over her plans in her head. She did not particularly cared that that redhead, Cody, had survived, she could always be taken care of later. No, the real pain was that Liandrin Kamiya had survived as well. Not only was the woman as difficult to get rid of as a cockroach, she was Heero's ex as well. And as much as Kara would like to deny it, it irked her to see that almost 4 years of separation had not widened the gap between the two and loosened Li's apparent hold over Heero. Even worse was that she seemed unaware of the power she was in possession of. She had been the only one that Kara had an actual, burning desire to kill. The rest were just business. She would make Li Kamiya feel pain for compromising her plans, and she would accomplish it with her own hands. And when she was done she would relish the day that Heero Yuy was hers, and hers alone.
