Chapter 2:

Duo gently lifted the other pilot in his arms and carried him to the bedroom, heedless of the blood that was getting all over his chest. Placing Heero on his side, Duo carefully peeled away the jacket and threw it into the clothes basket. He would deal with that later. Going into the bathroom, he brought back a damp washcloth, basin of water, some antibiotics and gauze tape. He gently probed the wound, causing Heero to groan in his sleep. Noticing both an entrance and exit wound in the shoulder, Duo sighed in relief. "Well, that's one less thing that I have to worry about." Wiping away the clotted blood, he cleaned the wound and dressed it. He would have to call Sally Po to come and look at it he supposed, though he knew Heero wouldn't be happy about that. But Duo had another reason for calling Sally. He could feel the heat emanating off of Heero's body, and Duo was scared of what it might mean. Sighing, he placed a clean washcloth on Heero's head before heading to take his own shower.

Duo let the cool water wash over his body and wondered if he should immerse Heero in the cool water too. But he didn't want to move the other pilot for fear of injuring him more. Stepping out of the shower, he began to towel dry his hair as he headed for Heero's laptop in the corner of the room. Heero was sleeping fitfully on the single bed and Duo bit his lip. Opening the laptop, he entered Sally's email address and sent her an urgent coded message telling her where she needed to go and why. He knew that she was on the same colony as he and Heero because he had seen her the other day when he went into town to get supplies. Now, he just had to wait and hope she got the message soon.

Walking back out to the living room, he saw the strawberries that he had left sitting out on the tabletop. Going in to retrieve them, he carried them back to Heero's room and sat down by the window with them and the whip cream. Staring out at the artificial night that had descended the colony, he never realized that Heero was awake and watching him.

Duo poured some of the whip cream into his bowl and taking a strawberry, he swirled it around in the cream before placing it against his lips. Flicking his tongue out, he licked the whip cream up on one side of the strawberry before he popped the rest of the delicious treat into his mouth.

Heero had to stifle a groan as he watched the tantalizing man in front of him, unwittingly seducing him with the merest movement. His arm still throbbed but the pain was bearable. Sitting up, though, he felt rather light headed and fell back against the pillows with a soft thud.

Duo looked up at the sound and was surprised to see Heero scowling at the bed as if it was its fault that he couldn't remain upright. "Oy Heero, take it easy. You don't have the strength to be getting up just yet." Duo smiled softly when Heero's scowl was turned on him.

"Omae o korosu."

Duo smiled even more. "Yeah, yeah, I know, but I seriously doubt you can carry out that threat right now." This only made Heero frown some more. "By the way, I emailed Sally to come take a look at you."

Heero blinked and then he said softly but deadly, "you did what?"

"You heard me Heero. You need a doctor and Sally can be trusted with our safety."

Heero was about to protest when Duo put his hand up silencing him. "Don't even start with me Heero. I am not going to back down on this."

Heero watched the American with hooded eyes, before slowly nodding in acquiescence. "Fine, Duo." Heero was satisfied to see the American's mouth drop open in startled surprise. A ghost of a smile flitted across his face before he closed his eyes again. "I'm going back to sleep Duo, but save me some of those strawberries for later." He was asleep before Duo even had a chance to reply.

Duo's mouth hung open as he wondered briefly how long Heero had been watching him. Sighing, he took the strawberries and cream back to the kitchen placing them back in the refrigerator. Reaching up, he started to braid his now dry hair back into its customary braid. He knew Sally would be coming soon. In fact he thought he heard a soft knock just as he finished his braid. Grabbing his gun from the countertop, he slowly approached the doorway. Peeking out the dingy window carefully, he sighed in relief, when he recognized the blond haired woman on the doorstep. Opening the door, he let Sally inside. "Sally. Thank you for coming so quickly."

Sally smiled at the braided pilot. "It's not a problem, Duo. How bad is it?"

"I don't think the bullet wound is that bad. I managed to get it to stop bleeding, but he has a fever too, which is what I am worried about. He's also been drifting in and out of consciousness."

Sally nodded as she followed Duo back to the bedroom. Entering, she immediately noticed how pale Heero was compared to the dark sheets he was laid against. Going over to the other boy, she could feel the heat that was still radiating off of him. She frowned as she undressed the bullet wound. Studying it, she realized that Duo had done a pretty good job at cleaning it up. She didn't notice any discoloration that would indicate an infection nor did she see anything that might signify him being poisoned. Reaching into her kit, she pulled out a needle and thread. Grateful that Heero was asleep, she called Duo over to her. "Hold him down, Duo. I don't want him to jerk awake when I start to stitch him up."

Duo immediately complied as he settled on the bed next to Heero. He then placed one hand on Heero's waist, the other on Heero's uninjured shoulder, to keep him from moving. "Is this okay?" he asked softly.

Sally nodded as she threaded the needle."Yes, that's fine Duo." She then started to stitch up the wound in Heero's shoulder. She could feel the muscle beneath her hands coil in tension but the injured boy remained asleep. Finishing her task, she sat back on her heels and eyed the two pilots. Motioning for Duo to follow her, she headed back out to the front room.

Duo shifted nervously from foot to foot as he thought about what Sally had to say to him. "Sally, what is it? What's wrong with him?"

Sally frowned thoughtfully as she considered Duo's question. "Duo, do you know if he's been sleeping well?"

Duo frowned as he thought of the numerous nights he had heard Heero tossing in his sleep. "No, I don't think he has been sleeping well at all. He's been tossing a lot lately."

"That's what I thought. Duo, he's mentally and physically exhausted. The bullet wound just pushed him over the edge. He needs rest and lots of it. Which means, no more missions for awhile."

"He's not going to like that."

Sally shrugged. "That's too bad, because if he keeps up this pace, he is going to kill himself."

Duo nodded. "I understand and I will keep him grounded if I have to take apart the Gundams to do it."

Sally smiled. She knew she could count on Duo to keep Heero grounded. She could see the love in the braided pilot's eyes, even if he himself had not admitted to it yet. "Good. I knew I could count on you. Placing a small bottle in Shinigami's hand, she said "here, make sure he takes one of these a day for the next week. It should help him sleep and it will also bring his fever down. Also, you might want to give him a cool bath when he wakes up, if his fever isn't down by morning."

Duo nodded as he led Sally to the door. "Do you know when he might wake up?"

Sally shook her head. "No, that's entirely up to him, but it would be good for him to sleep at least throughout the night without being disturbed."

Duo nodded again as Sally left. Shutting the door firmly behind her, he made sure it was locked before heading back to Heero's room. Standing in the doorway, he watched the slow rise and fall of Heero's chest. Walking over to the other man, he cracked open one of the pills and tilting Heero's head back, poured the contents of the pill down Heero's throat. He would have given the complete pill to Heero but he didn't want to choke him, and he knew that the powdery substance would easily be swallowed. Glancing at the digital clock that was beside the bed, he realized just how late it was. Standing, he crossed the room to his pallet and slipped under his blankets, letting sleep claim him.
