Five Pilots and a Girl

PROLOGUE

"Hurry Dad! We must drink the potion. The Oz soldiers are coming!" Lysa cried to her father.

"Very well" Mr. Torentio said before he gulped down the contents of the potion. Instantly, he sensed a burning sensation at the pit of his stomach. His vision became hazy then he fainted.

Lysa quickly bent down and tried to get his father's pulse. There was none. Good. The potion worked. Sorry dad but I mustn't let you be caught by them.

As soon as she stood up, the Oz soldiers came in. She raised her arms to surrender. One of the soldiers checked on her father and was surprised to find he was dead. "What happened to him?" he barked at Lysa.

"He, he d-died of a heart attack!" she cried.

The soldier then grabbed her and headed out. She took one last look at her father.

All habitants of L3098 who were found alive were taken as prisoners and were rounded up in the center of the colony. The head of the invasion was surprised to find out that there were very few prisoners. Most of who were street beggars and homeless kids. The captain was furious. Most of the habitants have obviously escaped. L3098 was known as the capital of science. Most famous scientists and professors lived in the said colony. In fact the scientists who built the Gundams were said to have lived here. His orders were clear: to capture the scientists in L3098 and be taken back to Earth. At that time, they badly need to build a mobile suit that would counter the attacks of the Gundams.

Lysa glanced around as they were all taken to the base camp that was supposed to be the military camp of the colony. She could see so many bodies scattered around. She knew that some of them have taken the potion. That potion can render a man's heart to stop beating for three hours. She pities the others who were with her at that moment. She knew that these people didn't have enough money to buy the said potion. It was invented by one of her father's colleagues just recently. They predicted that the Oz would invade their colony because all the top scientists live here. They have planned an evacuation but were too late to implement. They were one day behind schedule. Damn!, she muttered. Hope Dad's with the others already.

"Your name?" one of the Oz soldier said.

Oh-oh. I mustn't let them know that I am the daughter of Marc Torentio. "My name's Lara Perkins."

"Age?"

"Fourteen."

"Your parent's name? Are they scientists?"

"No. I, I don't have any parents. None that I know of. I live in an orphanage."

"Okay. You may go with the rest."

Lysa was surprised to find that they were boarding a space shuttle. With that, she suddenly became scared. She doesn't know where they were heading. Now she felt the true implications of her decisions. She should have taken the potion along with her dad. But no. She knew that the Oz soldiers would find something amiss if they found both of them dead. Besides she has to build an excuse. She knew her father would realize it once he finds out that she's missing. Marc Torentio is renowned as one of the creators of the Zero system. He is one of the targets of the Oz. The other scientists have already fled and decided to build the Gundams by taking her father's inventions. Her father disagreed to use the Zero system at its current state because of it's destructive abilities on the pilot using it so has decided to stay behind to perfect the model.

Please let him be safe. I hope he had reached the escape shuttle already. She prayed.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the colony…

"WHAT??!!" Mrs. Torentio almost shouted to her husband. "She was with you in the University right? Don't tell me we've lost her?"

"I've looked everywhere for her. We were supposed to both take the potion but then…." He rubbed his forehead trying to look for ways on how to break the news with her wife and two kids that his eldest daughter is missing. "I've looked everywhere for her but I just can't…"

"NO! NO! I'm going back!"

"Don't be foolish Tania! I'm sure that -"

"Attention. Attention. Shuttle 309 will leave in 5 minutes. All personnel please report on deck."

"Listen to me Tania, I believe I know why Lysa did this. I'm sure she can take care of herself."

"For crying out loud Marc! She's only 14 years old!"

"Don't forget that she is our daughter. She is a genius like us."

"A genius yes, but she is still a child!" Mrs. Torentio tried to get pass by her husband but he had caught her in a tight grip.

"Don't go out. Think about our other children. Elizabeth and Marcus need us both. I'm sure we will see her again."

"Oh Marc. I just can't…" and she cried into her husband's arms.

"Shhh…. I'm sure we will see her. Just believe in her."

Then the shuttle took off and proceeded to a destination in space called the Dead Zone, a place where even Oz and Rockefeller Foundation would not dare to go.
