When Relena saw Heero getting off the taxi in front of her mansion she smiled in spite of the reason of his visit. It had been a long time since she had last seen the handsome Japanese, almost three months to be exact. After the end of the fights she had made sure to invite all of the ex-Gundam pilots over to her house at least once a month. She liked to hear how everybody doing and what they had been up to, now that they had finally gained peace. She had been surprised to hear that they all were working for the Preventers from time to time, Wufei, Duo and Heero even regularly. When Noin told her that Heero had asked her for a job Relena had smiled a little. It seemed like Heero knew nothing else but fighting although he could have done *anything* with his skills. He might have been the wealthiest teen on earth or rather in space right now. But he remained the silent soldier he was trained to be, who never wanted to be famous.
She was very worried on account of what Wufei had told her on the phone. Somebody was threatening to kill her? Again? And someone else than Heero? It must be someone extremely dangerous if Heero had aborted his current mission to protect her. He never left a mission unfinished. Either the mission was a success or he self-destructed with more or less success. She still felt the weight of his head against her chest when she had caught him from collapsing after `shooting´ Mariemeia. After that incident he had disappeared for several weeks before he had turned up at the Preventer's headquarters. And now he had volunteered to play her bodyguard. She must be in *real* danger.
After she told Pargan to bring Heero to her room she looked in the mirror and checked her appearance once again. Then she blushed slightly upon her actions.
"Stop acting like a enamoured schoolgirl! You've been the queen of the world," she told herself. "Heero and you are just friends! Plus, you've gotten over him a *long* time ago!"
"You've gotten over who?"
"Heero?!"
Relena whirled around to look at the new-arrival. Heero looked like he hadn't slept for a long time. He had dark rings under his eyes that were clouded with concern and, right now, a little amusement. He seemed as unapproachable as ever.
"Heero," smiled Relena.
He surprised her by smiling back. Something must have changed him during last mission, something or someone, for the better *and* the worse. He had tiny wrinkles around his eyes indicating that he had been laughing or at least smiling a lot currently but his eyes were so full of worry that Relena had to frown.
"Heero? Are you alright?"
"Yes, I am, thanks. How are you?"
"I am fine as well," Relena answered, surprised. When did he start caring about other people's wellbeing? Or was he only trying to be polite? No, he really wanted to know how she was.
"That's good. I was afraid..."
The Perfect Soldier, afraid?
"Why, Heero?"
The young man hesitated, not looking into her eyes. He let out a tiny sigh.
"Senator Jaques Secunda will send a force that will kill you, take over Sanc and then declare war on everybody who won't join them."
Relena's eyes widened in shock. Senator Secunda? He wanted to kill her? Why he?
Then she smirked.
"And you're here to make sure that you observe your promise? Are you here to kill me before they get a chance to?"
Heero knew she was joking but still he felt hurt.
"No, I am here to protect you. And I have to talk to you."
Relena smiled and nodded, seeming not one bit afraid.
"Thank you." She pointed down on his bag that was lying on the floor. "I guess you'll be staying over night. Pargan will prepare a room for you."
Heero looked down as well and only nodded.
"Come on, let's go downstairs to find some comfortable seats. Would you like something to drink or eat?"
"A glass of orange juice should do it."
The blonde girl smiled and led him to the library that opened to the backyard where a huge English Garden lay. It had a tiny maze in the middle of it, some fountains on the sides and very plain green lawn. Although Heero preferred colorful flower fields he had to admit that the architect had created a masterpiece out there. In fact he was glad that there weren't any beautiful flowers or else he would have been reminded even more of his love.
[Duo...]
Relena looked curiously at him. Heero's expression had changed slightly the second he noticed the green meadows outside. Like they... reminded him of something... or someone, making him sad. She wanted to ask him about it but knew better than to do so. It would have been no good. Nobody could force the stubborn youth to do something he didn't want to, especially not Relena. She had tried, yes, but failed miserably. He neither stopped his fighting nor did he kill her when she begged him to. She didn't have the wish to die when she had asked him to she only wanted to make sure that he would come back from his `mission´ alive, making her the last person he had to kill. But he hadn't done so yet and she felt a little thankful for that. Otherwise they couldn't sit and talk here in peace.
She directed him to a very comfortable leather armchair and sat down in a similar one. Pargan brought the requested drinks and they remained silent for a few minutes. Heero was pondering about how he could tell Relena what had happened to him. It was all so confusing! Where should he start?
[Might as well start at the beginning...]
"Relena, I..."
Heero hesitated again. How would she take what he was going to say? How would she react if he told her he had been in love with her and now was in love with a *male*? Would she freak out?
"Whatever it is, you can tell it to me."
Relena smiled reassuringly, oblivious to the fact that she was reminding him of Duo. It was exactly the same tactic he used to make him talk to the longhaired boy openly about his feelings. Heero gathered all his courage in a very deep breath before he spoke again.
"Relena, before I... went on the last mission... I was... I was sure that I loved you."
Relena's ocean-blue eyes widened a little in shock as his words sank into her mind. She was surprised, happy and worried at the same time. He loved her? But why was he talking about that in past tense? Didn't he do so anymore? Why not? She was a good-looking girl, right? What was wrong with her? Had he met another girl on his mission?
"Oh Heero, I didn't know... Why haven't you told me earlier?"
"I... I was embarrassed. Because of what I've said to you..."
"You mean your threat to kill me?" She looked accusingly into his eyes. "Heero, you should know me better by now than you could think that I would resent you for that."
Heero looked down on the glass in his hands.
"Gomen..."
Relena shrugged it off. She knew him good enough to not being hurt by that. But he had wanted to tell her something.
"What happened? It sounds like you aren't that sure anymore."
"Well, I am sure about something. I am not in love with you but it is not your fault."
That hurt. Relena stared at him, trying her best to keep the tears from welling into her eyes. She had seen it coming but the bluntness of how Heero had said it hurt like a cut of a knife. Heero noticed that, too and he looked extremely sorry and said so.
"Never mind," Relena replied, forcing a smile on her face. "I was in love with you, too, but I am not anymore. I realized one day that you and I are just friends and nothing will ever change that. I would have never imagined that you were in love with me as well."
Heero looked at her, considering how to tell her that he fell in love with Duo on his mission. He had to be careful. He had hurt her too much already now.
"Then I had to protect senator Secunda's niece."
"I've heard of her. She was believed to be dead, wasn't she?"
So that was the girl Heero fell in love with.
"She is. She died three years ago during an asteroid hail on D9."
Or maybe not.
"Then how could you protect her? And why should you?"
"Because she works for the Preventers."
He reached into his pocket to fish for a photograph which he showed Relena. It had been taken by Sakura, Duo's nanny. On it were Duo and himself sitting on a bench in front of the big flower fields in the house's garden. They both were smiling happily and Duo was leaning on his shoulder, having his arm wrapped around his waist.
Relena stared at the picture. It was beautiful. Heero looked so happy with that girl leaning onto him that she felt happy for him and a little tear escaping her eye, making Heero mistake it.
"Relena..."
His voice was so full of sorrow that Relena smiled at him.
"She's beautiful. What's her name?"
Heero blinked once before he answered, "Duo."
Puzzled Relena looked at the photo again.
"That's strange. Doesn't your best friend have the same name?"
She could see how he fidgeted in his seat when she said friend. Somehow the violet blue eyes and long chestnut locks looked familiar to her.
"They even look alike..."
Then realization hit her like a thunderbolt. Her jaw dropped.
"That's Duo? Duo Maxwell? The *boy*?"
"Hn."
"You would definitely think that this is a girl," she said after taking another close look at the longhaired youth in the picture.
"That was his mission. He had to make everyone believe he was Diana de l'Amour, the senator's long lost niece."
"And you had to protect him? Of what?"
"He wanted to avoid advances from the boys in his class by making them believe he had a boyfriend. It was my mission to act as that."
The blonde girl eyed him speculatively. "`Act´?"
"Well, yes. At first I only acted... But after a while..."
Did that sound as dumb to Relena as it did to him?
"You fell in love with a ... *guy*? Instead of me?"
He looked up from under his bangs into her surprised face and nodded. Relena sighed.
"That's *so* weird. I feel hurt in my womanhood." She looked at Heero and smiled. "But I'm glad you found someone to love."
Dumbfounded he stared at her. She was glad that he had someone to love? Someone else than her? Even someone of the other gender? He had believed she would burst into tears, yell at him for being strange and think he was some kind of monster.
"You are not mad at me?"
"Why should I? I do not own you, you can do what you want," she replied. "Besides, love doesn't stop because of such minor things like one's gender. How did it happen?"
Heero shrugged. "I don't know. It all happened so fast. I just know it started with a dream."
Relena clapped her hands together. "Oh Heero, I never knew you were a poet! That sounds *so* romantic!"
Heero growled, "It was a nightmare."
"Oh."
And so Heero told her what had happened to him and Duo during the last two months. Relena listened curiously, nodding now and then, laughing when he told her he had to wear a girl's school uniform.
"That's the second time! Do you remember I made you do that as well, when you and Quatre were at my school? You didn't want to wear yours." {1}
"Don't remind me of that."
"You looked cute with that little ribbon in your hair."
"Omae o korosu."
"That's exactly what you said back then."
The girl giggled cheerfully, not noticing that Heero's cheeks reddened.
[Kuso, I have to be careful with that sentence! She might mistake it just like Duo.]
He continued his story and when he got to the point where he had to tell Relena that Duo was the real nephew of Secunda her eyes widened.
"I thought he was an orphan?"
"But he had a mother when he was born. And that was Antoinette Secunda," he explained. "He wanted to find out more about here so he stayed with the senator when he proposed us to the choice of either helping him or leaving."
"But he won't fight, will he?"
Relena looked scared. She wasn't afraid as long as Heero had only to protect her from some incompetent wannabe soldiers but Duo Maxwell was just *as* dangerous as Heero was. In normal mobile suits, that didn't use the Zero system they were equals in fighting skills and speed. If Heero had to fight Duo he wouldn't have the time to watch out for other attackers.
"I hope so," Heero replied truthfully. He wasn't sure about how his braided baka would change without him. Maybe the information that the senator held about his mother were so powerful that Duo would forget who he was, who Heero was.
Relena seemed to read his mind and looked sorry. She walked over to his armchair and hugged him, feeling a slight wetness where he rested his head on her shoulder.
"He's strong. He won't be brainwashed."
To be continued...

{1} I know it was only in the funny four-panels at the end but I think it *could* have happened. Also, it was extremely funny. ^_^

Okay, you *might* bash Relena after that one but please don't flame me... I just used a mixture of how I think of her, some of the stuff I read in other stories and a great amount of myself. So if you bash her I will feel hurt as well if it isn't well-reasoned.
The first one who's gonna review this chapter will win the price of making me extremely happy by reaching three digits of reviews... Mata ne!
