Fool's For Everyone
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ Perfect by nature
Icons of self indulgence
Just what we all need
More lies about a world that ~
Heero stood behind the curtains as Relena gave yet another speech about their newfound peace and pacifism. It was so mundane. He just couldn’t grasp why people continuously came back to listen to her. All she ever did was talk about the same stuff over and over again. He had to admit though, she never repeated the speech in the same order or words.
Maybe it was because he’d heard them all that they no longer had an effect on him. Heero sighed as he took his eyes off of Relena and looked through the crowed for anyone that might be an assassin or terrorist. Seeing no one that looked suspicious, just the usual crowd of politicians and upper class men, he looked for one familiar face. The only other person that had come to every one of Relena’s speeches, Heero couldn't understand why, but was always relieved to see that face. Heero knew that the person did not come to listen to Relena. They came to get a glimpse of him.
Ah, there he was. He looked different now. His hair was shorter, he wore fake eyeglasses, and his eyes looked so sad all of the time. Duo looked right at him and did nothing else. He didn’t smile, frown, wave, nothing. Heero just could not understand why he continuously came to these speeches if it hurt him. The day Duo had confessed, Heero had rejected him, saying he loved Relena. That’s what he told himself. Relena was what he needed, stability, peace, and love.
He was slowly seeing that stability and peace were only words she used in her speeches.
~ Never was and never will be
Have you no shame don’t you see me
You know you’ve got everybody fooled ~
Her talks of peace would not last forever. All she ever did was talk. She never did anything. She sent others to do it for her. It wasn’t like that in the beginning. At first she would visit the colonies, talk to the people, and then everything slowly began to change. She couldn’t be bothered with going to see the colonies that were out of the way. She stopped seeing those that were less fortunate. It pained him to think about it, but eventually war would return to the world and colonies.
His stability was slowly crumbling before his eyes. Along with the peace everyone had worked so hard for, especially him and his fellow pilots. He wasn’t even sure of Relena’s love for him anymore. She never seemed to act like every other couple. Sometimes he got the impression he was no more than an object for her to show off.
Heero adjusted his tinted sunglasses as they slipped slightly down the bridge of his nose and fixed his overcoat. He couldn’t wait to get home and change. He’d gotten used to jeans and slacks during the time of peace, having to wear formal clothing was such a bother and uncomfortable. Glancing at Relena once more, he closed his eyes to wait the rest of the conference
out.
~ Look here she comes now
Bow down and stare in wonder
Oh how we love you
No flaws when you’re pretending
But now I know she ~
-A few weeks later-
Heero stood in the living room door way as he watched Relena walk by him without a glance. It didn’t bother him as much anymore, this was after all a normal daily occurrence. Heero refrained from sighing as he made his way to his own room.
Once in the solitude of his bedroom, he locked the door and began to strip. Only leaving his boxers on, he walked over to one of his dressers and pulled out a pair of joggers and a T-shirt. Once he was dressed he sat down in the only chair in the room, he looked up at the ceiling and lost himself in thought.
He was tired of this life. He wasn’t allowed to do anything. The only time he was allowed out side was if Relena was by his side or they were at a conference. There was a camera outside his door that monitored all activity that went in or out of his room. Thank god he’d found the entire camera set-up in his room and disabled them.
-Two weeks later-
Heero stood by his window and glanced at the darkening sky. Relena played the part of a lady perfectly. The media believed that they had the perfect relationship. He now knew better. He did not love her, she did not love him. And he honestly did not want to be someone’s possession. He was leaving, whether she liked it or not.
~ Never was and never will be
You don’t know how you’ve betrayed me
And some how you’ve got everybody fooled ~
“I’m leaving Relena.” Heero told the girl in front of him as he picked up his suitcase. He ignored the tears falling down her cheeks; they weren’t real anyway.
“You can’t leave me Heero, I love you. Besides where will you go?” she asked, sniffling back some more fake tears.
“Relena stop lying. You don’t love me. And where I go is none of your concern.” Heero turned towards the front door.
“He doesn’t want you.” She commented off-handily, her tears forgotten. Heero looked at her sharply. “What? You don’t think I don’t know about your feelings for that gutter trash. I see him at the conferences. But he could never love you the way I do. He’s incapable of having feelings such as love.” She sneered at him.
“That is not going to keep me here Relena. Even if what you say was true, I refuse to live here any longer.” Heero walked towards the door and stepped to the side as a vase hit the wall beside his head.
~ Without the mask where will you hide
Can’t find yourself lost in your lies ~
“I will not let you leave.” Relena exclaimed vehemently as she took in a deep breath.
Heero paused in his steps as he spoke to her without turning around. “Relena, I know who you really are now, and honestly I don’t like what’s behind that mask you put on for everyone. I’m not as naïve as you may think. I’m leaving and you will NOT stop me.” Heero opened the door and walked out of the house without a second glance. Closing the door behind him, he walked
down the walkway towards the road where the cab he’d called was waiting.
~ I know the truth now
I know who you are
And I don’t love you anymore ~
Standing in front of the apartment door, Heero looked down at the piece of paper in uncertainty. What if he moved or worse yet still lived there and closed the door in his face.
Well he’d come this far; there was no turning back at this point. Taking a deep breath, he lifted his hand to the door and knocked.
“Coming.” The definitely male voice rang out form inside the apartment. A boy with blonde hair and sea green eyes greeted him. “Hi, can I help you with something?” the boy asked as Heero stood there, his feelings running rampant on him. Did he get the wrong address? Did Duo move? Maybe this guy was his boyfriend? Was he too late? “Hello?”
Heero shook his head to clear the clutter of thoughts, one step at a time. “Hi, does Duo Maxwell live here?”
“Yes, he does. Who do I say is asking?” the blond-haired boy asked.
“Just tell him it’s an old friend.” Heero replied.
“Alright, well please come on in and wait right there. I’m Jacob by the way.” Jacob pointed to the hallway entrance as he introduced himself. Heero nodded without saying a word.
Jacob shrugged as he walked down the hall. “Hey D, there’s someone at the door.”
Heero lost the conversation as he assumed Jacob walked into another room. All he could hear were muffled voices.
“An old friend?” Heero almost ran out the door as he heard Duo’s voice coming down the hall. Heero took a deep breath and held it as Duo came into view. How he could have ever denied that he had feelings for this boy he did not know. “Hi, how can I – Heero?” A flash of pain crossed Duo’s eyes as he looked at the other boy.
“I’m sorry.” Heero answered as he bowed his head.
“What are you doing here? And where’s your other half?” Duo asked bitterly.
Heero looked up at Duo. “Honestly, I don’t know why I’m here, you were the first person that came to mind after leaving Relena’s.”
“You mean she actually let you leave the house, and, by the looks of it, all on your own at that.” Duo commented sarcastically.
“No, she didn’t let me leave the house, I left her.” Heero pointed to his bags.
Duo looked at them and then back at Heero. “No.”
“No?”
“You are not staying here.”
“I wasn’t going to ask. I already have hotel reservations; I just haven’t stopped there yet. Seeing you was more important.”
Duo stood there in the hall watching Heero eerily for a moment before he sighed and nodded his head to himself. “Do you want to stay for lunch or something?” Duo asked as he motioned in the direction of the kitchen.
Heero started before nodding, “I would like that.”
Duo gave him a smile before leading Heero down the hall to his small kitchen. They entered the room to find Jacob pulling a pizza out of the oven. “All ready?” Duo asked the blonde.
“Yeah, are we having company?” Jacob asked as he placed the pizza on the counter.
Duo nodded as he took out three plates and glasses. “Before I forget. Jacob, this is Heero Yuy. We are old friends dating back to the war. Heero, this is Jacob Andrews. We were dorm mates at the university last year.” Duo introduced the two as he set the table.
“Pleased to meet you Heero.” Jacob greeted in a friendly tone as he started to cut up the pizza.
Heero nodded at the boy before turning his attention to Duo. “Which university do you go to?” Heero inquired as he sat down in the chair Duo pointed to.
“St Michael’s, they have a great engineering course that I’m taking. Jacob is taking dramatic arts, he wants to be a drama and art teacher later on.” Duo informed him.
“I also work at the local garage on the afternoons that I don’t have class, and on Saturdays. Sundays I have off, so it’s the day I do all my housework and groceries. Jacob doesn’t do them, the first and last time I let him do them, he came home with everything that we didn’t need.”
“Hey, there is no need to keep bringing it up. I said I was sorry, and I used it all up by the end of the week so it’s not like the food went to waste.” Jacob interjected offhandedly as he placed the pizza in the middle of the table.
“True, true you did.” Duo let out a laugh as he took a piece of pizza.
Heero followed the boy’s actions and began to eat his own slice. How could he not have know that Duo was going to university. He should have known, for the simple fact of Duo being a friend. Had Relena really had such a strong hold on him? Had he really been so blind then? Yes, he had. He’d been so convinced that he was meant for Relena that he’d ignored everything else going on around him, along with how he’d really felt for the girl.
They finished their lunch in remote silence. Duo and Jacob asking Heero questions once in a while, but mainly talking to each other. Duo cleared off the table once they were done and then made his way to the living room with Heero. Jacob excused himself and went to his bedroom. Sitting down on the couch, Duo looked at Heero, who was sitting in the armchair, and sighed. “So, what do you plan on doing now that you’ve left her ladyship?”
Heero shrugged his shoulder slightly. “Haven’t planned that far ahead yet. Maybe go back to school or find a job.”
Duo nodded slightly as he watched the other boy intently.
“Are we still friends?” Heero asked suddenly as he looked out the window.
Duo started at the question, taking a few minutes to think about his answer. “I guess so. I don’t see why we wouldn’t be.”
“You don’t see how we wouldn’t be? God, Duo, I’ve been a horrible friend, a horrible person altogether. I ignored everyone. I was so lost in my own world that I didn’t even notice that I didn’t love Relena like I thought I did. And you don’t see why we wouldn’t still be friends?” Heero exclaimed as he looked at Duo straight in the eyes.
“Oh Heero, do you really believe that? That you’re a horrible person?” Duo asked as he got up off of the couch and walked over to the other boy. “You’re not. You were looking for somewhere to belong, that’s all. And you believe that you belonged with Relena. It’s not your fault for not realizing it. I don’t hold it against you, and I never would. Of course we are still friends.” Duo hugged Heero tightly. The two stayed like that for a while before Duo sat down on the arm of the chair and looked at Heero intently. “Heero, what do you really want. What would make you happy?”
Heero looked Duo in the eyes and hesitated a moment, not sure on how to phrase his words. “What I want?” Duo nodded. “Heh, I’ve never been asked that before.” Heero sighed. “What I want is impossible to have.” Heero replied vaguely.
“Try me? What could possibly be impossible for the perfect soldier to have?” Duo pressed on.
“Don’t call me that. I’m not perfect, someone perfect would not have neglected his friends or not know what he wanted. And I’m not a soldier anymore.” Heero commented bitterly.
“Stop being so hard on yourself. You’ve realized what you did wrong, that’s a big step and you’re doing something about it. Now what is so impossible?” Duo coaxed softly.
“You are.” Heero answered softly.
“I am? How am I impossible?” Duo inquired curiously.
Heero looked out the window quickly before returning his eyes to Duo. “You are impossible because what I want it you. And I know I can’t have you. You stated that very clearly earlier when I first arrived.” Heero abruptly stood up from the armchair and made his way to the front door. “I have to go. I need to sign into the hotel. And start looking for a job and apartment.” Heero commented disjointedly.
“Heero Yuy, you stop right there. Don’t you dare leave this apartment yet. Come back here and sit down. We are going to talk about this. You can’t just run away from everything.” Duo commanded.
“Run away from it? Of course I’m going to run away from it. It took me two years to realize what I truly wanted and now I can’t have it. Besides you are in no position to be telling me when I can and cannot run away.” Heero bent down to put on his shoes.
Duo, realizing that Heero was not coming back into the living room, got up and went to the front door. Walking past Heero, he stood in front of the door and glared at the Japanese boy. “You are not leaving and that is final.” Heero grunted in response as he put on his other shoe. Duo growled as he left his post at the door and took Heero’s shoulders in his hands. “Heero, look at me.” The boy did as he was told but very reluctantly. “How about we work on being friends before any assumptions are made. Yes, you hurt me. But I’ve forgiven you, earlier I was surprised to see you, I reacted the way I did because of the shock. And honestly not all of the bitterness had left me. I thought you were just going to use me before going back to her.”
“I would never do that.” Heero started before he was cut off by Duo.
“Heero, don’t ever say never, it tends to come and bite you in the ass every once in a while. Stay for supper then I’ll give you a ride to your hotel. Maybe tomorrow I can help you find an apartment and a job. We’ll work on being friends and worry about the future in the future. Agreed?” Duo asked as he lead Heero back to the living room., after Heero had taking his shoes off.
“Alright.” Heero agreed as he sat down on the couch beside Duo.
~ It never was and never will be
You’re not real and you can’t save me
Somehow now you’re everybody’s fool ~
-Six months later-
Heero was sitting on his couch looking out his window as he waited for Duo to arrive. The two had went from being just friends to best friends in a month. True to his word, Duo had found Heero an apartment along with a job. He now worked at a bookstore a couple of blocks from his apartment. He was also going to school, majoring in Biochemistry. The day Heero had never thought would happen, had taken place just over a month ago. The two had decided to go to the next level of their relationship and try the next step. So far everything had been going good. They had, had some minor tiffs about some thing’s, but nothing too major. A knock on the front door brought him out of his musing.
Heero opened the door to his apartment and smiled to Duo as the boy walked in. “Hey you finally got a new couch.” Duo commented as he took his shoes off and went to sit down on the mentioned furniture.
“Yeah, it came in yesterday. So what did you want to do today?” Heero asked the other as he sat down on the couch as well.
“We could always go to Relena’s conference that she’s holding in town.” Duo commented off-handedly.
“I think I’ve heard enough of them to last me a life time thanks.”
“Yeah I guess it would be pointless to go. Especially since the only reason I was going in the first place is sitting right beside me.” Duo pointed out as he poked Heero in the side.
“Why did you put yourself through that, Duo? What if I had happened to truly love her? All that time would have been wasted.”
Duo shrugged as he looked at Heero. “It was never a waste. Besides, had you truly loved her you wouldn’t have looked so lonely all of the time. And those sunglasses hid nothing from me. After so many years of knowing you, I learned how to read your body language pretty well.”
“Ah, she couldn’t give me what I needed, nor could she help me. I think some times she made things worse than necessary. She may have had me fooled at first but now she’s just become the fool instead,” Heero replied as he gave Duo a loving kiss.
“Try me? What could possibly be impossible for the perfect soldier to have?” Duo pressed on.
“Don’t call me that. I’m not perfect, someone perfect would not have neglected his friends or not know what he wanted. And I’m not a soldier anymore.” Heero commented bitterly.
“Stop being so hard on yourself. You’ve realized what you did wrong, that’s a big step and you’re doing something about it. Now what is so impossible?” Duo coaxed softly.
“Heero Yuy, you stop right there. Don’t you dare leave this apartment yet. Come back here and sit down. We are going to talk about this. You can’t just run away from everything.” Duo commanded.
“Run away from it? Of course I’m going to run away from it. It took me two years to realize what I truly wanted and now I can’t have it. Besides you are in no position to be telling me when I can and cannot run away.” Heero bent down to put on his shoes.
Duo, realizing that Heero was not coming back into the living room, got up and went to the front door. Walking past Heero, he stood in front of the door and glared at the Japanese boy. “You are not leaving and that is final.” Heero grunted in response as he put on his other shoe. Duo growled as he left his post at the door and took Heero’s shoulders in his hands. “Heero, look at me.” The boy did as he was told but very reluctantly. “How about we work on being friends before any assumptions are made. Yes, you hurt me. But I’ve forgiven you, earlier I was surprised to see you, I reacted the way I did because of the shock. And honestly not all of the bitterness had left me. I thought you were just going to use me before going back to her.”
“I would never do that.” Heero started before he was cut off by Duo.
“Heero, don’t ever say never, it tends to come and bite you in the ass every once in a while. Stay for supper then I’ll give you a ride to your hotel. Maybe tomorrow I can help you find an apartment and a job. We’ll work on being friends and worry about the future in the future. Agreed?” Duo asked as he lead Heero back to the living room., after Heero had taking his shoes off.
“Alright.” Heero agreed as he sat down on the couch beside Duo.
-Six months later-
Heero was sitting on his couch looking out his window as he waited for Duo to arrive. The two had went from being just friends to best friends in a month. True to his word, Duo had found Heero an apartment along with a job. He now worked at a bookstore a couple of blocks from his apartment. He was also going to school, majoring in Biochemistry. The day Heero had never thought would happen, had taken place just over a month ago. The two had decided to go to the next level of their relationship and try the next step. So far everything had been going good. They had, had some minor tiffs about some thing’s, but nothing too major. A knock on the front door brought him out of his musing.
Heero opened the door to his apartment and smiled to Duo as the boy walked in. “Hey you finally got a new couch.” Duo commented as he took his shoes off and went to sit down on the mentioned furniture.
“Yeah, it came in yesterday. So what did you want to do today?” Heero asked the other as he sat down on the couch as well.
“We could always go to Relena’s conference that she’s holding in town.” Duo commented off-handedly.
“I think I’ve heard enough of them to last me a life time thanks.”
“Yeah I guess it would be pointless to go. Especially since the only reason I was going in the first place is sitting right beside me.” Duo pointed out as he poked Heero in the side.
“Why did you put yourself through that, Duo? What if I had happened to truly love her? All that time would have been wasted.”
Duo shrugged as he looked at Heero. “It was never a waste. Besides, had you truly loved her you wouldn’t have looked so lonely all of the time. And those sunglasses hid nothing from me. After so many years of knowing you, I learned how to read your body language pretty well.”
“Ah, she couldn’t give me what I needed, nor could she help me. I think some times she made things worse than necessary. She may have had me fooled at first but now she’s just become the fool instead,” Heero replied as he gave Duo a loving kiss.
