Duo paced nervously around the small living room. He kept his mind focused on the movement of his feet as walked back and forth in front the couch. Twisting his hands he laughed to himself at his childish behavior. Taking a deep breath he forced himself to relax only to have his stomach knot viciously all over again. He had to calm down. This was the most important night of his life and he couldn't screw it up. He only had one chance and he had to do this right.
As he walked he could feel the small jewelry case in his pocket thump against his leg softly. Reaching down he pulled out the velvet-lined box and flipped the lid open. The simple little diamond ring glittered in the bright light. Frowning he turned the case allowing the diamond to catch the light. He had never bought a ring before. Hell, he had never bought jewelry before. The only jewelry he owned was the gold cross that hung around his neck. He inspected the ring closely hoping it was enough. He wasn't rich and he saved all the extra money he could for the last seven moths just to afford the damn thing. Now looking at the ring he doubted his decision. He should have bought something bigger, more expensive looking. He should have saved up another seven months.
Closing the case he shoved it back in his pocket. It had to be tonight. He had thought of all the ways to go about this and tonight was perfect. She was gonna get one helluva eighteenth birthday present. But he couldn't screw it up. He just hoped he could find the right words to ask the big question. He was pretty sure she'd say yes but what if she didn't? It wasn't like he'd ever proposed to anyone before. She might not be ready for this yet. Of course she was ready, they were already living together. True they never went all the way but she was worth the wait. And she loved him so she just had to say yes.
Swallowing hard glanced at the wall clock for the hundredth time. 7:19 He had made dinner reservations for eight. The restaurant was top notch and tonight he was going all out. Resisting the urge to tug at the collar of his shirt he grabbed the formal jacket hanging over the arm of the couch. Slipping it on he sighed impatiently. Hilde said she was almost ready a half an hour ago. He was tired of waiting. He told her to dress up but did she have to take this long to get ready? Three hours was plenty of time. How hard was it to slip on a dress and fix her hair? She kept it so damn short its not like she had much to fix.
Continuing to pace he glanced at the clock again. The gentle ticking was the only sound in the silent room. The slow steady rhythm was beginning to grate on his nerves. He didn't hear her footsteps coming down the carpeted hall. The sound of her voice nearly made him jump out of his skin.
"I'm ready. How do I look?" she asked from the doorway.
Turning to face her his breath caught in his throat. Oh my God….. She looked amazing. Her ebony hair shined midnight blue setting off the contrast of her smooth pale skin. The sleek black dress emphasized every curve of her slim frame. She turned in a circle as his gaze traveled farther down over her shapely legs. At her soft laughter he jerked his eyes back to her face and grinned sheepishly.
"You look perfect." He said still unable to tear his eyes away. She walked forward slowly, the gentle sway of her hips capturing his gaze.
"I never thought I'd see the day you would wear a suit. You look very handsome." She said taking his hand as he pulled her closer.
"There's a first time for everything. Don't get used to it. " He replied in his usual cocky tone.
"I won't." She laughed. She started to pull away but he kept his hold firmly on her waist. She slid her arms around his neck and grinned. "We don't want to be late. Come on Duo."
"I don't mind being late." He said softly.
"Oh really?"
"You know, we can skip dinner and just get straight to desert." He whispered brushing his lips against her ear. She giggled making him smile even wider.
"Behave Duo." She chided.
Sighing he pulled away. He had to stick to the plan. He needed tonight to be perfect. He wanted to remember this night for the rest of his life. Taking her hand he led her toward the door saying one last silent prayer that his dreams would come true.
The soft music floated through the air as the shimmering candlelight completed the effect. Hilde sighed in contentment. Dinner was wonderful and the romantic atmosphere made everything perfect. She had to admit she was impressed. When Duo had said he was taking her out for her birthday she had expected something normal, one of their usual places. This was beyond her wildest dreams. The elegance and sophistication was something she had never expected. This wasn't Duo's style.
She smiled to herself as Duo glanced helplessly at the table next them trying to copy the etiquette of the other guests. He looked so lost in the splendor of their surroundings. He was doing his for her, so she could have a good time, and the knowledge made this the best birthday present she could ask for.
But she knew Duo as well as she knew herself and something was on his mind. All evening he'd been unusually quiet. He wasn't silent, it was impossible for Duo to be silent for too long. It was almost like he seemed nervous. As quickly as the thought crossed her mind she dismissed it. Duo didn't get nervous. That was one of the many things she loved about him. He could always keep his cool in any situation. How many times had he kept her from losing it? Too many times to count. But there was still something wrong. He was staring at his empty plate drumming his fingers on the table.
"I had a lovely evening Duo." She said as reached across the table and grasped his hand.
"Its not over yet." He smirked.
"There's more? Honey, we can't afford much more." She said uncertainly.
"Don't worry. Just trust me." He winked.
He tossed a wad of bills on the table and pulled her to her feet. She followed him out of the restaurant feeling giddy with excitement. Tonight was like a dream. He was trying his best to be romantic and it was definitely working. Entwining her fingers through his she pressed against his side. Instead of heading to the car like she expected he lead her across the parking lot. She looked at him curiously noticing the secretive little smile on his lips.
"Just where are we going?" She asked. The sound of his soft laughter sent her heart pounding.
"This place is in the middle of the city's park. We're gonna take a little walk. Relax, its not like I'm going to do anything to you." His grin turned predatory as he stepped behind her letting his free arm creep slowly around her waist and up her stomach. Pulling her back against him his warm breath tickled her ear as he spoke seductively. "Of course if you say please I might do something you'll really like."
"Maybe big girls should be afraid of the dark." She gasped as his hand started to move up to her breasts. Stopping his hand she tried to drag in a deep breath fighting the pulsing heat beginning to flood her body. "We're in the parking lot, remember."
"Alright, alright." He sighed dramatically draping an arm around her shoulders as he began walking again.
Letting him lead her she rested her head against his shoulder as she tried to keep up with his long strides. They walked across the grass leaving the well light parking lot behind them. Her heart was still pounding but it had nothing to do with fear. She knew she was completely safe in the comfort of his presence. But he still had that little smile on his face and with a mixture of excited curiosity she was dying to find out what he was up to.
"Honey tell me what's going on." She pleaded.
"Patience is a virtue." He mimicked her favorite saying whenever he tried to get information from her.
"That's not fair." She whined.
"See, its not so funny when you want answers huh?" He laughed.
She pursed her lips in a pout but his grin was too adorable to resist. They continued walking, their pace slow, just enjoying the moment and the quiet. She lost track of time as they talked idly holding hands in the warm summer breeze. She couldn't help but laugh when Duo finaly pulled off the heavy formal jacket and almost ripped his tie an attempt to loosen the annoying collar at his throat. Chewing on her lower lip she couldn't tear her gaze away from how downright sexy he looked with his shirt half open and the tie draped around his neck. Following suit she decided to get comfortable too and pulled off her spiked heals sighing with relief. She watched Duo toss his jacket carelessly on the cool grass then he turned to face her smiling invitingly.
The only illumination being moonlight made the entire scene seem surreal. Her eyes widened as he formally bowed before her holding out his hand. Dropping her shoes she stepped toward him wondering what on earth had gotten in to him. He was being so polite tonight it was almost frightening. The little sneak was up to something. Placing her hand in his he continued to stare at her with an almost dazed expression on his features.
"Will you honor me with a dance?" he asked softly.
Smiling slightly she nodded not sure she could trust her voice. Placing her other hand on his shoulder she relaxed as he began to lead her in the steps of a slow waltz.
Feeling the tension drain from her, Duo pulled her closer caught in the feel of her body swaying with his in the same rhythm. They didn't need music. Staring into her dark blue eyes he knew he was loosing himself in their depths. The pale moonlight spilling across her face gave her skin the look of porcelain. His eyes dropped down to her moist pink lips and he couldn't help himself. Lowering his head slowly he captured her mouth in a gentle brush of lips. Feeling her respond his control slipped and he pressed his mouth to hers more firmly. Here with her in their little private world nothing else existed but the moment.
Reluctantly breaking the kiss he realized that at some point they had stopped dancing. Resting his brow against hers he was more than content to just hold her. She had slid her arms around his neck and now she was threading her fingers through his hair. Her eyes were half open and her breath was coming fast from her parted lips. She was so beautiful. She was his everything, his heart, his soul and his very life. The feelings welling up inside him were so strong he couldn't breathe.
"Do you have any idea how much I love you?" He choked hoarsely.
He cut off her reply with his lips unable to resist kissing her again. Slowly he ran his hands up and down her back pressing her closer against him. There was no resistance as she returned the passionate kiss. He was so caught up in the need coursing through him he didn't notice her arms sliding down his chest. The only thing he felt was her warm hands sliding under his now un-tucked shirt.
He moved his kisses from her lips to her neck. He felt her shiver as he mouthed the pale smooth flesh. He could feel her racing pulse throbbing against his lips. The sent of her perfume overwhelmed his senses. He didn't want the moment to end. He wanted to stay like this with her forever, just the two of them lost in each other.
He forced himself to lift his head. As much as he wanted to continue he knew this wasn't the proper place. If he kept kissing her like that he was going to loose what little control he still possessed and do something they'd both regret. She wasn't ready yet and he didn't blame her. Considering neither of them had any previous experience in the subject of sex he even found it sort of intimidating. And it didn't help any that she knew just how to touch him and get his desire raging. Good intentions be damned, he was a normal male after all. The obvious bulge in his pants was proof enough.
He smiled slightly as her arms slid around his waist. Sighing she rested her head against his shoulder. He continued to hold her tightly almost afraid to let go. She felt so fragile in his arms, so small and delicate, almost breakable. But he knew better. She had a backbone and stubborn streak that could match the best of them. It was just one of the many things about her that had captivated him. Of course he had known there was something special about her the first time he laid eyes on her. And now three years later he was still falling for her more and more everyday.
Abruptly she lifted her head and leaned back in his arms. The soft smile curving her lips made him swallow hard. The husky sound of her voice instantly sent his pulse into overdrive.
"Thanks Sweetie. This was one of the best nights of my life." She spoke with a bright sparkle in her blue eyes.
It was now or never. The moment was perfect and he just didn't think he could stand it anymore. All night his nerves had been on edge. He had to have her answer.
Sinking to his knees he leaned his head against her flat stomach. Gripping her waist he looked up to her startled features. He felt her hands slide over his shoulders. He could see the question reflected in her eyes as she reached out gently brushing his bangs out of his face.
"What are you doing Duo?" she asked hesitantly.
"Look, I know I'm not always good at showing you how I feel and I know sometimes you think I take you for granted." He whispered reaching up and bringing her hand to his lips not taking his eyes from hers. "Baby, you mean the world to me. I want you to know how much I love you. I've never felt this way about anyone before. You walk into a room and I can't concentrate on anything but you. Your voice does things to me. I can't explain what I'm trying to say." He laughed self-consciously. Taking a deep breath he tried to get to the point.
"I need you. I don't know what I'd do without you and I don't want to find out. There is a reason why I dragged you out here tonight." He reached in his pocket and pulled out the black velvet box. He flipped open the lid and placed the case in her hand. With all the courage he could muster he whispered the question that would change the rest of his life.
"Hilde, will you marry me?"
Hilde stared at the ring in shock. Her hand trembled and her vision blurred as hot tears filled her eyes. It was beautiful. Even in the moonlight she could see the sparkle of the precious diamond. Slowly she turned her eyes to his. He was scared, she could see the fear in their violet depths. This was so unexpected and yet maybe it wasn't. She knew he loved her and she had done her best to prove her love to him. They were as close as two people could be. She had known for a long time this moment would come one day and she already knew her answer.
"Yes." Her voice wavered as more tears flooded her eyes. She dropped to her knees before him unable to stand. She threw herself against him wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.
"I didn't think tonight could get any better but I was wrong." she laughed through her tears.
"I can't believe you said yes." he muttered faintly.
She pulled back and looked him in the eye. He was stunned. His eyes were wide and he kept opening his mouth like he wanted to talk but nothing came out. He had his arms wrapped around her so tightly she almost couldn't breathe but she didn't mind. Slowly his lips started to curve into a smile.
"You're stuck with me now ya know." He laughed.
"You promise?" she countered her heart near bursting as she spoke.
"Well gee baby, I wouldn't have ask…."
His voice stopped abruptly as she silenced his sarcastic reply with her own lips. There was no way in hell he was going to ruin this moment. Pressing against him she moved her mouth softly, almost teasingly, against his. There was something addictive about his kisses. They were worse than chocolate. She could never get enough of him and now was no exception. She felt his hands slide down her back stopping at the base of her spine. He never crossed certain boundaries and right now she was ready to say to hell with them.
Breaking the kiss she breathed in deeply. Without warning Duo pulled her sideways landing her on her back. Bracing himself on his elbows he leaned above her grinning idiotically. Taking the ring box from her he grabbed her hand. His expression turned serious as he spoke softly.
"You're sure about this"
"I love you and I want to marry you. Trust me, I'm sure." She said with conviction.
He took the ring out of the case and slid the band on her finger. Then starting at her palm he began to place tiny kisses up her arm. Her eyes slid closed at the tiny sparks of desire shooting through her body. She sighed as his kiss moved across her shoulder to the base of her throat. She felt his teeth gently nip at the flesh and she moaned faintly. His voice was slightly muffled as he spoke against her skin.
"If you let me keep this up you'll be in trouble." He warned.
"I don't care." She said unable to calm the pounding of her heart.
"Yes you do and so do I." He sighed as he flopped back on the grass next to her. Groaning in frustration she leaned up and tried to look angry.
"You're evil." She said as a sly grin crossed her lips.
"No, I'm just scared as hell." He replied honestly.
Not expecting such an honest answer she stared at him curiously. That was why she loved him. Those rare little moments like this when he could be so sweet and considerate she almost didn't recognize him. He was never cruel but sometimes he could be very careless with his words and actions and it hurt. But she knew his heart was in the right place even if his common sense wasn't. But regardless of his faults she loved him with all her heart. Moving closer she pressed against him resting her head on his shoulder.
"In some aspects we know more than most adults and in others we're still just kids." She said sadly. Absently she twirled the end of his braid between her fingers her eyes watching the ring on her hand sparkle in the moonlight. "I know what you were trying to say before. I love you so much sometimes it scares me. Sometimes it hurts. I'd go through hell and back for you. Anything to make you happy." She replied.
"You make me happy just being with me. Shit, at risk of sounding completely corny, you know those little old people, the ones that can barely walk but ya see 'em holding hands and stuff. I want that to be us when we get that age. I want us to have kids, ya know, start a huge family. Everything I want you're a part of it." He said the words quietly as he stroked her back gently.
"I've got everything I want right here." She whispered softly. "I don't want tonight to end."
"Me either." He agreed.
Closing her eyes she smiled to herself. If she had any doubts they were finally laid to rest. She had made the right choice and she couldn't wait for the future.
Three months later
Duo looked in the mirror critically as he buttoned the last buttons of his tux. This penguin suit was really a pain. But Hilde wanted a nice wedding and he had to admit he was dying to see what she looked like in her dress. They wouldn't let him see her last night and he hadn't seen the dress yet either. Quatre kept saying something about bad luck to see the bride before the wedding, just another typical tradition to stick to. In truth he didn't mind but it sucked to sleep alone last night. He was used to having his arms around her. But it was only for one night and tonight they wouldn't be sleeping. After three years of waiting, of watching and wanting her….. Nope! Sleep was definitely not on the agenda.
Turning from the mirror he glanced at the clock. Thirty more minutes and the ceremony would begin. Oh God, in an hour he would be a married man. He'd have a wife. Wife. Now that was an interesting concept. Not many people took him for being the committed type. He knew even Hilde had her doubts about his ability to work with their relationship. But the answer was simple. He loved her. Okay, granted it took him forever and a day to realize it but when he did he admitted it. He did have his pride and on occasion he stuck his foot in his mouth and said all the wrong things at all the wrong times, but pride doesn't give you a reason to wake up everyday. Pride doesn't give you that funny feeling in your chest and it doesn't look you in the eye and steel your heart right out from under your nose. So pride went bye-bye.
He frowned slightly. Yeah he had put it aside along with a lot of other things like fear and confusion. He hadn't come to this decision over night. He had thought hard about how he wanted his life to be. He had a future and that was gift he didn't intend to waste. The war had taught him one important thing. Life was precious and short and you have to live life to its fullest. So he taken a good look at all he had to live for and not surprisingly Hilde was at the top of the list. She was the only person who ever came close to understanding him. Her faith and hope and determination had kept him going through everything. Nobody else made him feel the things he felt when he was close to her. She was his ultimate goal. With that knowledge he decided to make it forever. And there was no doubt in his mind that he'd made the right decision.
He was jerked out of his thoughts as the door suddenly opened. Forcing his mind to the present he smiled as Quatre walked in humming "Here Comes The Bride". This dream wouldn't be a reality if it weren't for Quatre. He owed the boy more than he could ever repay him. The wedding wouldn't be taking place if Quatre hadn't insisted on footing the bill. He said that since they were his best friends and that weddings only came once in a lifetime he wasn't taking no for an answer. Duo really had tried to talk him out of it. Hilde said she'd elope with him and according to their budget that was the only option. But then Duo learned Quatre's true talent. You can't say no to someone who is the master at getting his way. After all, twenty-nine sisters spoiling you rotten kind of gives you all the practice you need.
"Things are all set. They want you up by the altar." Quatre said happily.
"Just give me one minute." He replied making one last check that all was in place. The rings! Where are the rings?! He turned to Quatre almost afraid to ask. "Please tell me Heero has the rings." He asked hesitantly.
"Yes, you assigned him the mission of being best man. Do you honestly think he'd make a mistake?" Quatre laughed softly.
"Good point." He muttered raking his fingers through his spiky bangs. He looked up at the gentle grip that settled on his forearms. Pushing him down in the chair Quatre sighed in amusement.
"Duo calm down. Everything will be fine. You know, I never thought it would be possible to see the great shinigami turn into a pack of nerves." He chuckled.
"Q-man, this is the most important day of my life. I'm just waiting for something to screw up." He whispered.
"Its natural to be nervous but for once in your life have a little faith. You got a great girl and you're about to tie the knot. You're a lucky man Duo, very lucky." He said with the slightest hint of envy.
"Thanks man, for everything. You don't know how much this means to me. I swear one day I'll find a way to repay you." Duo said then laughed at the look of horror crossing the other boy's face.
"No. You don't owe me anything. Really Duo you're not paying me back. I want to do this for you." Quatre said firmly.
"We'll see." Duo grinned rising to his feet. He glanced around the room one more time and looked at Quatre questioningly. "You sure we got everything we need?"
The only response Duo received was two hands physically pushing him out of the door.
"Oh my God, you look great!" Relena gasped as Hilde turned around displaying the dress for the first time. She laughed at the blond girls dramatic expressiveness.
"Thanks. I just hope I get a similar reaction from Duo." She replied.
"Oh I think you will, my dear." Relena laughed slightly as she gave Hilde that knowing look, "Duo is going to love it. Now sit down and let me finish with your hair."
Hilde tried to sit patiently but she couldn't relax. She couldn't ever remember being this nervous. She wasn't afraid, just way too wound up. The stress of the last two weeks was catching up with her. This whole wedding was arranged and planned in less than a month. It wasn't their original plan but she had to admit this idea was much better. They had wanted a traditional wedding but as always money was the main issue. They weren't hurting but they didn't have too much extra either. It would have taken years to save enough to have this day. So Duo's solution was to elope. The only problem was that they wanted to get married in a church not by a judge. They continued to debate over their slim options and in conversation she just happened to mention it to Quatre. She never expected him to do all this for them.
She closed her eyes and took a claming breath. Everyone was here by now. It was a small guest list, a total of twenty-three people. Neither she nor Duo had any family so the only people to invite were the people closest to them in their life. They had made some good friends through their little salvage business and most of them were able to show up. But first on the list had been their closest friends. Duo called them "The Crew" because it was always the group of them. Heero, Ouatre, Trowa, Wufei, Sally and Relena. It wasn't often they were able to get together, especially all at once, yet somehow they remained close. But they were all here today and that made everything worth it.
"What are you thinking about?"
Hilde was startled out of her thoughts by the unexpected question. She looked at Relena in the mirror and smiled. "I was just thinking that you guys are the only family Duo and I have and it means so much to us that all of you could be here today." She laughed self-consciously as she quickly brushed at the tear that trickled down her cheek.
"Of course we're all here. We wouldn't miss this. We all have our own lives now but its good to get away and be with your friends. And if by the grace of God I should ever get married you know I want you there with me. We've been through so much together and I don't get to see you as much as I'd like….. Damn it, now you're making me cry." Relena said smiling as she brushed at the tears in her eyes.
Hilde laughed as Relena secured the last clip in her hair. Looking at herself in the mirror she had to give her friend props on her sense of style. The dress, the hair, the bouquet were perfect. The overall effect was elegant. Of course she hardly ever had occasion to really dress up. She felt almost like a princess in a fairy tale and now she was off to meet her handsome prince charming. Handsome wasn't the word. She had always thought Duo was cute but the last three years had done wonders to his body. He wasn't a scrawny teenager anymore. He was definitely a man now and the charming part was right on the mark. Duo was gifted with a smooth tongue. After all his charm had saved his life more than enough times. But when he put the seductive charm on her she was as good as putty in his hands. The boy knew how to get what how wanted and he wanted her.
She still couldn't quite believe this was happening. I'm getting married. The words ran around her mind but it was almost as if it wasn't happening to her. She was more nervous at being the center of attention than at the vows she going to take. But she had no reason to be scared. She had known that they would take this step one day. She was young but she knew her mind and her heart. Obviously Duo felt the same if he was ready to take this step. She could clearly remember the look in his eyes as he asked her to be his wife. Duo's eyes always gave him away and the love she'd seen there had made the choice for her. She would never regret her decision. He was hers now, all hers, and just knowing that was the best feeling in the world. She couldn't wait till tonight when they could be alone. Last night had been hell but traditions were cute and sweet. Even so, she still missed having him there beside her. But not tonight. Tonight was their night. Tonight there would be no boundaries and no limits. Tonight was the first night of the rest of their life.
The sudden knock on the door jerked her back to reality. She flushed as she realized where her thoughts had been heading. She turned around as the door opened. The familiar jovial voice that filled the room made her smile widen.
"Hey I hope your decent but if ya ain't I'm coming in anyway." Said Howard with a wink.
"We're as ready as we'll ever be." Relena said as she hugged the former mobile suit engineer.
"Its seven now. There gonna start the music in a couple of minutes. Duo's pacing around out there, he's a nervous wreck. Man, if I didn't know better I'd swear he'd start pulling his hair out." He said turning to Hilde. He opened his arms and she embraced him in a tight hug.
"I know how he feels, I'm nervous too." She laughed.
"Then lets get the show on the road." He said as he pulled back and offered her his arm.
Linking her arm in his they followed Relena from the small dressing room. They took position waiting for the doors to open starting the wedding march. Through the closed double doors she heard the murmur of voices die down as the organ music started softly. As the double doors opened she watched Relena instantly transform. She lifted her head and began to walk slowly her posture and aura demanding respect. Vaguely over the pounding of her heart Hilde wondered how she did it. How did she go from "best friend' to 'queen of the word' in mere seconds.
Making a mental note to ask Relena later she swallowed hard fighting the knots in her stomach. She knew she was digging her nails in Howard's arm but she couldn't help it. She hated this part. All eyes focused on her, it was terrifying. Gently Howard patted her hand as he leaned close and whispered in her ear.
"You look beautiful, kiddo. Keep your head up and show 'em how it's done." He said, his voice assuring.
Hilde nodded smiling slightly. Letting Howard lead her they started their procession up the isle. Briefly her eyes scanned the small crowd taking in the familiar faces. Then all thought fled her mind as her eyes landed on Duo. She stared into his eyes completely forgetting everyone else in the room.
Duo stood frozen on the spot. He couldn't tear his gaze away to save his life. She really was an angel, she had to be, no human could be that beautiful. The simple yet elegant cream-colored gown seemed to glow in the soft candlelight. The sleeveless empire style dress softly defined every curve as the shimmering silk flowed with the movement of her body. The only jewelry she wore was a simple pearl necklace. She didn't need anything else. She was truly stunning. It seemed like slow motion as he watched her come closer and closer. Finally Howard stepped away and she stood before him her eyes intently locked on his own. Taking her hand he pulled her beside him.
They turned to face the priest as his deep voice hailed the beginning of the ceremony. Duo took in the familiar words and prayers feeling a sense of comfort, the same comfort he'd felt as a child when Maxwell Church had been his home. Kneeling side by side glanced at Hilde and smiled. Her head was bowed and her eyes were closed. The soft droning of the priest's voice stopped as he motioned for the couple to stand.
Facing Hilde he took hold of both of her hands. They trembled as they gripped his tightly. Her eyes met his and he smiled. An answering smile curved her lips and his heart thumped in his chest. Then the spell was broken as Heero tugged on his sleeve. For a split second he stared dumbly at the gold ring placed in his palm. Then all at once the excitement that had been building all evening broke like a dam and the emotion flooded his senses. He breathed sharply as the deep voice of the priest commanded everyone's attention once again.
"Hilde Schbieker, do you take Duo Maxwell to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do you part?"
"I do." She said clearly. Duo watched tears fill her eyes even as she tried to hold them back. Memorizing the look in them he slid the slim gold band on her finger.
"And Duo Maxwell, do you take Hilde Schbieker to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do you part?"
"I do." He answered. He couldn't stop the silly grin that lit his face. Even more tears filled her eyes as she in return slid a similar gold band on his finger.
The rest of the ceremony was a blur. He couldn't concentrate on anything but the one little word chanting around in his head. Wife…Wife…Wife…Wife…But reality crashed down when he heard the one sentence he'd been waiting for the whole mass.
"You may kiss the bride."
Not wasting a second he pulled her close kissing her soundly.
Hilde stood in awe as she gazed around the elaborate hotel room. When Quatre said he arranged a little getaway for the weekend she'd been expecting something small scale, not something bigger than their house. This wasn't a hotel room this was a palace. But leave it to Quatre to go all out.
Even the little reception after the wedding had been lovely. Between the music and dancing and one too many toasts with champagne it was a fun party. Everyone had whished them well and she didn't think she'd ever cried so much in her life. It was so good to see everyone again. Even Wufei had been sincere and wished them the best. It was perfect but they hadn't stayed long. As soon as the pictures and the well wishing and the toasts were over Duo practically dragged her out to the limousine. Now here they were in this penthouse suite with direct orders not to be disturbed for three days. This was bound to be interesting.
"Baby, you gotta see this!" She jumped as Duo's voice echoed through the spacious sitting room.
"See what?" she asked as she sat on one of many plush chairs slipping off her shoes.
"They got this huge walk in shower that fits like four people and it's got a friggin' hot tub, all in the bathroom. Did you check out the bedroom? That has got to be the biggest bed I've ever seen. Man, this awesome." He said excitedly as he walked up behind her and placed his hands on her shoulders. Gently he moved his hands in soothing circles easing her tense muscles.
"The hot tub sounds good." She sighed slouching back in the chair and closing her eyes.
"Its way big enough for both of us." He said his voice turning soft as he spoke sending shivers down her spine. "Now that gives new meaning to ruba dub dub fun in a tub."
She grinned not having the strength to laugh. The massaging movements of his hands now had her entire body limp. Forcing her eyes open she found herself drowning in a sea of violet. Slipping the straps of her dress off her shoulders, his hands continued their magic moving slightly lower. Suddenly she realized from his vantage point he had clear view down the front of her dress. The thought started her heart pounding. Purposely she arched forward watching his reaction intently. He swallowed hard letting his hands slide even lower. She heard the breath rush out of his lungs as she moaned softly.
Without warning he let go of her shoulders and came around to the front of the chair. Grabbing her wrists he pulled her up to her feet. She swayed still unsteady from the relaxing effects of his touch. Placing his hands on her waist he pulled her closer. He pressed his mouth to hers in a rough kiss and all conscious thought left her mind. Gripping his shirt she tried to press as close as possible. Urgently he forced her lips open running his tongue along hers. She whimpered in a mixture of nervous desire. She felt him lift her against his body and instinctively she wrapped her legs around his waist. The new angle gave her better advantage as she returned the kiss with equal passion.
So lost in the feelings flooding her senses she didn't even realize he'd carried her to the bedroom. Setting her on the edge of the bed he pressed her back against the soft mattress. Then he pulled back breaking the kiss. His warm hands moved down from her hips and along her thighs slowly as he lowered himself to his knees. She leaned up on her elbows unsure of what he was doing. The only thought her mind could process was the burning heat settling in her abdomen.
Little by little he slid the long silk gown up her legs. He stopped not quite reaching her waist. She watched with heavy eyes as he removed her stockings, unclasping then from her garter and kissing the newly exposed flesh. Her breath caught in her throat as his lips moved higher and higher up her thighs. He paused turning his gaze to hers and grinned wickedly. He knew what he was doing to her but before she could say anything he rose to his feet again pulling her with him.
He turned her around and she trembled as he slowly started to unzip the silk dress. The feel of the fabric falling loosely around her body set every nerve on end. All at once the material fell in a shimmering pool at her feet. Still clad in her slip, bra and panties she turned to face her tormentor. All of this slow teasing was fine but she wanted his touch so bad. She wanted his hands and his lips covering every inch of her body. But if he wanted to tease then two could play that game.
He started to reach for the straps of her slip but she caught his hand. With a sly smile curving her lips she pushed him back onto the bed. He raised a brow curiously but her only response was another teasing grin. Taking a step away she turned her back to him looking over her shoulder. Placing her hands on her hips she began to move the flimsy material upward. He tensed his eyes focused on the expanding view of flesh. She heard his sharp intake of breath as she raised the slip over her ass revealing her thong panties. Cruelly she turned back around letting the slip fall back down to her knees. His eyes narrowed and his hands clenched as she watched him visibly fight to remain seated. Then one by one she slid the straps over her shoulders. Slowly she let the cloth fall to the floor.
The cool air flowing against her skin made her shiver as she stood before him. Straddling his waist she bit her lip as his hands instantly moved over the bare skin of her rear. Roughly she tugged his white shirt out of his pants. Impatiently she stared pulling at the buttons. She felt his touch move up her back and she shook her head. She forced his arms back down to his sides. He had too much control. He always had her wanting more.
The barely restrained hunger in his violet eyes sent excitement shooting straight through her. Pulling off his shirt she pressed her self against him just as his lips found the base of her throat. Running her hands over his hard muscles she gasped as he bit lightly at her collarbone.
This time she didn't stop him as he reached behind her and unhooked her bra. Instead she fumbled with unbuttoning his pants. As soon as her bra joined the rest of the clothing on the floor he turned his mouth to her breasts. Moaning in pleasure, all she could do was cling to his neck as her head fell back. She arched toward him as he circled his mouth over her stiff nipples. Softly biting the hard nubs he let his hands roam down to ass her again. The mixture of sensations took her breath away. She cried out hoarsely as the gentle biting turned to sharp suction. Clawing at his back she pressed her hips to his overwhelmed by the pulsing heat radiating through her body. Rubbing against his hardness she felt his grip tighten pressing her down even more.
"Duo." She moaned breathlessly.
The tone of her voice as she said his name sent a primal need surging through Duo. He was being consumed, the feel, the taste, the sent of her skin had him suspended in a mounting wave of desire. As she rubbed against his erection again his control broke. He wanted her screaming. He wanted her to cum again and again and again.
Shifting his body he pushed her back on the bed. Leaning above her he smiled as she tried to pull him back down. Grasping her wrists he pinned them down against the bed. She looked at him steadily her eyes clouded with desire. Keeping their gazes locked he lowered his head and pressed his lips to the valley between her breasts. He heard her breath catch as she arched toward him. He moved his mouth lower over her flat stomach intoxicated by the taste of her skin. Slipping to his knees he pulled her hips to the edge of the bed. He stopped his kisses as his lips brushed against the barrier of her panties.
Losing all patience he ripped the material tossing it to the floor. Her sent flooded his senses as he hungrily buried his tongue in her wetness. Instantly she stiffened at the unfamiliar contact. Gripping her waist firmly he pulled her against his mouth. He lapped at her clit savoring her unique taste. Her soft cries only added the fire raging inside him. He moved his tongue faster against her soft flesh keeping in rhythm to the grinding motion of her hips. Suddenly she tensed, her back arching, as a choked scream escaped her lips.
Lifting his head he smirked as her eyes blinked open. She leaned up on her elbows panting breathlessly her blue eyes glowing with unspent passion. Rising to his feet he kicked off his shoes and socks as his eyes took in every inch of her naked body. Sitting up she grabbed his belt pulling him closer. He ran his hands up her arms as she unzipped his pants. She grinned evilly as she pulled his pants and boxers down in one tug. He kicked the pants to the side ready to pounce on her tempting body. Anticipating his next move, her grin widened as she slowly started to inch away from him. He stalked her half way up the bed before lunging at her and pinning her beneath him
He bit his lip as she moved her hands up his chest. Leaning on his arms he caught her lips in a crushing kiss. He felt her arms slide around his neck pulling him down even more. Beneath him she shifted her hips and he rubbed against her. His mind went blank at the incredible sensation. Automatically he thrust against her. Her lips curved against his as she rubbed him again purposely. Gasping he broke the kiss looking into her eyes.
"I don't want to hurt you." He whispered hoarsely.
"Please Duo, please." She pleaded softly pulling his head down to hers.
Kissing her again he started to slip inside her slowly. Feeling her stiffen he deepened the kiss as he thrust into her with one swift movement. He winced slightly as her nails dug into his arm. Pulling back his heart twisted at the tear that slipped from her tightly squeezed eyes.
"I'm sorry baby." He breathed as he buried his face against her neck.
She shook her head in response, her grip on his arm easing slightly. Little by little he felt her body relax growing accustom to the feel of him inside her. He forced himself to remain still despite the throbbing need consuming him. Feeling her erratic pulse beating against his lips he moved his mouth over the flesh teasingly. Nibbling and sucking gently he felt her body go lax. Continuing the distraction he began to move his hips slowly.
He judged her reaction intently ready to stop if she wanted him to. Gently as possible he moved inside her trying desperately to ignore the overwhelming demands of his body. It was torture to feel her tight warmth surrounding him. Pushing within her as far as he could he slowly pulled back only to thrust into her again. To his surprise she pushed against him meeting his movements perfectly. He tried to keep the pace slow but the more they moved together the faster he moved inside her. Listening the soft cries she made every time he filled her to the hilt he knew she wasn't in pain. She arched her body beneath him and he groaned at the feel of her hot, slick skin sliding erotically against his. He was losing the fight for control. He could feel his conscious thoughts getting more and more jumbled. The only thing he could focus on was the pleasure slowly building inside him. She felt so good, so wet and tight.
Gripping her waist tightly he slammed into her with steady thrusts. She was writhing under him, bucking her hips wildly seeking release. He could hardly breathe, each movement of her body sent intense sensations through out his being. He could feel the wave of pleasure about to crash. Suddenly she screamed her whole body jerking as spasm after spasm hit her body. Unable to hold back he hissed her name as his entire body became engulfed in mind shattering pleasure. He felt himself shoot off inside her, her contracting inner muscles clenching tightly around him.
Collapsing against her he held her tightly not wanting to let go. Never in his life had he ever experienced anything quite like that. All the teasing and light petting they did was nothing compared to this. Now he understood the big deal about sex. That was the closest two people could get. They had finaly taken the last step. Silly as it might sound she was a part of him now. The connection was more than any ring or declarations of love could provide. Something incredible happened between them. It was more than just sex, it was almost like for a brief second he could feel everything about her.
Leaning up slightly he brushed her bangs out of her face. Her eyes blinked open as a lazy grin crossed her lips. Returning her satisfied smile with a smug one of his own he lowered his lips to hers. He kissed her softly hoping she could feel in the kiss what he couldn't describe in words. She was his everything. He had told her that more than once but until this moment it never hit him just how much he meant it. And then again maybe he had known all along that she was his other half. There had been something there between them from the first time they met, a little spark of attraction or something. But after becoming friends, the more time he spent with her the more intense the feelings grew. He could still remember the exact moment he realized he cared about her more than he should. It was when he heard her voice over the com-link after she just stolen the info from Libra. That was the changing point in their relationship. Well, sort of.
"I love you." He breathed against her lips.
"I love you too, Honey." She replied softly.
Kissing her again, he found it funny that three little words had the power to make him the luckiest man alive.
She returned the kiss drowning in the love overflowing in her heart. She had lost her faith in people at a young age. All illusions of happily ever after had been shattered when her parents died. Until she met Duo the only person she could trust and depend on was herself. She had given up all hope and she had stopped believing in destructive things like love. That was why she understood Duo so well. They had formed a bond long before they ever considered starting a relationship. They were both children of circumstance. They had to do the best they could on their own. It wasn't so surprising that he was the only person she'd ever let this close.
Running her fingers through his hair she pulled him closer as he deepened the kiss. She slid her tongue along his purposely teasing him. He growled softly and she giggled. She loved him and sadly he would never know how much. There weren't words for the depth of her feelings. She had found him at a time in her life when she was completely alone. He stood by her through everything. He knew things about her she'd never told anyone else. She couldn't hide anything from him, he knew her as well as he knew himself. He was her happy ending and she thanked God for him everyday. And now he was also her husband, in every sense of the word.
She grunted in disappointment as he broke the kiss moving his lips across her cheek and down to her ear. Nipping at her earlobe he moved his hand up her side slowly, trailing his fingers in circles. She gasped as his maddening touch moved up to her breast. His calloused fingers rubbing her soft flesh made her breath catch in her throat. She felt her nipples stiffen sending a rush of heat between her legs. She moved her hips restlessly realizing he was still inside her. She was already wet and he was already hard. She thrust herself against him pushing him deeper. He gasped her name, his warm breath against her throat sending shivers down her spine. She cried out in pleasure as he began to drive into her his movements hard and forceful. She was dizzy, he was assaulting all her senses at once and her body was going into overload. He was squeezing and biting and pounding into her so violently it was almost painful but she didn't care. She could feel the pleasure building. The roughness of his touch only added to the inferno raging in her body. Then all at once everything exploded in an intense wave of pleasure. Distantly she heard him shout her name as he reached his own climax. Still moving within her she came again as his hot cum sparked pleasurable waves within her body.
Completely drained he fell back against the bed beside her. Her head lolled to the side as she forced her eyes open. A soft smile curved her lips. He was so cute with his hair damp from sweat and his face all flushed trying to catch his breath. He didn't know but many nights she stayed awake long after he dozed off just watching him sleep. He was so relaxed in sleep, his usual cynical humor gone leaving him looking like a vulnerable child. Right now however he wasn't asleep and at the rate they were going she wouldn't be able to walk tomorrow.
Rolling on her stomach she faced him. The instant she moved his eyes snapped open and an apologetic smile crossed his lips.
"I got a little carried away, sorry baby." He said softly.
"I don't remember complaining." She grinned. Scooting closer she leaned against his chest.
"Ya wanna go again?" He asked, his whole expression lighting up eagerly.
"Can I rest for a little while or are you determined to fuck me to death tonight?" She laughed in exasperation.
"Babe, we got three years to make up for. Now I don't know about you but I'm horny as hell and you sitting here naked ain't helping." He countered.
"Are you complaining?" She asked.
"Nope, not at all." He said with an evil grin as he pinned her on her back beneath him again. Raising her hand to his lips he pressed a kiss the soft skin of her palm. "Trust me, your beautiful with or without clothes. But right now I want you right where you are."
She tried to pay attention to his words but he continued kissing up her arm. The little kisses were just enough to distract her attention and labor her breathing.
"What are you doing?" She asked breathlessly.
"Proving that you're hot and wet for me." He stated confidently. Reaching down he slid his hand between her legs pushing two fingers inside her. He pulled them out showing her the glistening moisture. "I was right."
"I like it when you touch me." She whispered taking his hand and guiding it back down between her legs.
His soft laughter filled her ears as he began moving his fingers against her with agonizing slowness. She could feel his erection pressed against her thigh and she sighed in pleasure. His lips then moved along her throat and she moaned softly. Desire was already clouding her mind. The only thought she could focus on was getting Duo to loose control.
Moving her hand to the left she brushed her fingertips lightly over his stiff member. He jerked toward her touch. Intrigued at the feel of him she closed her fingers around his shaft pumping him gently. He groaned against her neck as he thrust against her hand. Knowing she was giving him pleasure increased her own desire. She stroked him harder and harder gasping as his fingers moved faster and faster against her. She was so close to an orgasm, she could feel the pressure about to burst.
Suddenly he pulled her hand away jerking both her arms above her head pinning her wrists against the bed. At the loss of his probing touch she whimpered in frustration. He laughed hoarsely as she wiggled her hips impatiently. His warm breath brushed her ear as he spoke.
"Do you want me to fuck you or would you rather rest?" He asked softly. The deep dangerous tone of his voice made her giddy with anticipation.
"You bastard." She growled. She tried pulling her arms free but he was too strong. She was at his mercy and secretly loving every second of it.
"Do you or don't you?" He asked again ignoring her insult. Mercilessly he pressed against her rubbing her with his erection.
"Yes." She hissed.
Instantly he slid into her in one hard thrust. He kept her hands captive above her head as he moved slowly cruelly teasing her. She couldn't move. She tried to move with him, against him, anything to ease the burning ache in her abdomen but it was useless. He had complete control of her body. In a mixture of frustration and desire she snarled.
He tried to keep the pace slow but her impatience was rubbing off. He covered her mouth with his kissing her brutally. She returned the kiss with equal force tasting blood as their teeth scraped together. He filled her to capacity with each stroke of his body. She was mindless as he rammed into her the vibrations of his movements rippling through her. He moved faster and faster giving her room to match his thrusts with steady ones of her own. With his tongue invading her mouth and his body doing the rest she came hard and fast. One second they were floating in an endless oblivion of need and the next she was screaming into his mouth as they were engulfed in a violent orgasm.
At some point he'd release her hands and she never even noticed. Holding him tightly against her she lay suspended in the peaceful exhaustion filling her. He ran his fingers through her soft sweat drenched hair absently. The relaxing sensation only lulled her more into the dreamlike state. Feeling her heart rate slow she let out a contented sigh. Leaning back he looked down at her and opening her eyes she found herself falling into his deep violet gaze.
"Don't fall asleep." He whispered softly.
"Why not?" she asked grinning tiredly at the way his eyes narrowed.
"We haven't made it to the tub yet." He answered his lopsided grin melting her heart.
She giggled pulling him closer as his lips claimed hers in a soft loving kiss.
Two years later
Sitting in the plush overstuffed chair Hilde fidgeted nervously. Her eyes scanned the wall of certificates and degrees with complete lack of interest. Her gaze then fell to the huge mahogany desk before her and she swallowed hard. She hated going to the doctor. She hated hospitals. She hated the sharp distinct smell of antiseptics and other chemicals. But to make the whole experience really bad it wasn't just any doctor, it was the gynecologist.
She shifted in the seat wincing at the still uncomfortable sensation left by the examination. He said it wouldn't hurt, yeah right. She wondered how he would like it if she shoved her whole fist up his ass. She laughed to herself at the only comparison she could think of. Griping her hands together tightly she took a calming breath trying to relax.
A week ago the nurse had called her saying it was time for her yearly check up. She had made the appointment for this morning. As usual Dr. Thompson did the examination. But today it seemed it took longer and when he was finished he told her he wanted her to take a blood test. Now she was sitting in his office waiting for the results. Even though he didn't say anything she had a strange feeling. He never required her to take a blood test before. The longer she sat here waiting the more and more nervous she was becoming. She felt fine but what if something was wrong?
Jerking out of her thoughts she tensed as the door opened. Holding her breath she watched the middle aged doctor as he placed a thick manila folder on the desk and took a seat in the wingback leather chair. He pushed his spectacles up and folded his hands before him looking at her intently.
"I'm sorry it took so long. I have the results but before I go over them I need to ask you a few questions. Mrs. Maxwell when was the last time you menstruated?" He asked.
"About four months ago. I've always been severely irregular. " She answered. He nodded his head scribbling something down on her chart.
"How have you been feeling lately? Any nausea, headaches or dizziness?" He asked.
"No, I've never felt better. The only thing I can think of is that I've had a little trouble sleeping the last couple of weeks." She replied watching his expression closely. He continued to write on the chart seeming at ease. Hesitantly she asked the one question she dreaded. "Is there anything wrong?"
"No my dear, your test results were normal. But I do have some good news. Congratulations, you're pregnant." He smiled kindly.
Hilde stared at the doctor wide eyed. As the full meaning of his words registered she smiled slightly. For a brief moment she was numb with shock. She hadn't been expecting this. Suddenly she laughed in a mixture of relived excitement.
"I had no idea. Oh my God." She said softly as she pressed her hands together to keep them from trembling.
"Judging from the size of your uterus I would estimate you are about three months along. I want to do an ultra sound so I need you to make another appointment. All your blood work is fine, your potassium and iron levels are a little low so I want you on vitamins. I also want you to take it easy. You're a very petite young woman and it would be best if you didn't over do yourself." He ordered smiling at her slightly dazed expression.
"Vitamins and take it easy, got it." She replied with a grin.
"Well my dear, that's all for this visit, I've taken up enough of your time today." He said as he came around the desk to face her. Squeezing her hand he congratulated her again before leaving her standing in the office in a haze of giddy excitement.
The whole drive home Hide barely paid attention to her surroundings. This was the best surprise she could ask for. Pregnancy had been the farthest thing from her mind. Even though they had never used protection she had always been irregular sometimes going as long as six months without her period. She had been told it was nothing serious, just an ovary problem very common in young women. She had been told a year ago that to get pregnant she would most probably have to take fertility pills. Knowing this they had decided to take their chances. Still there was a slim possibility she could become pregnant on her own and she had prayed it would happen that way.
She couldn't wait to tell Duo. He would be so surprised. Just imagining the look in his face made her laugh. He said he wanted kids but she wasn't sure he meant right now. Even if he wasn't prepared she knew Duo, he would be happy no matter what.
Pulling the car into the driveway she killed the engine. Staring vacantly at the steering wheel she chewed on her lip absently. How was she going to tell him? She wanted to do something special instead of just blurting out "guess what, I'm pregnant". Maybe she could buy him a card? She dismissed the idea, he wasn't the Hallmark type. Maybe she could tell him over dinner and get him to do the dishes? Now that was an idea. She laughed softly as she climbed from the car.
"What's up with Hilde?"
Looking up from the confused mass of wiring Duo raised a brow questioningly. Kyle, one of the few guys who had been there from the beginning of their little business, was shaking his head in amusement staring off toward the main door to the garage.
"What ya talking about?" Duo asked now fully interested in the conversation.
"She came in here humming and she almost walked right into the door when she left. She's out of it. Are you she ain't smoking crack?" Kyle asked teasingly.
"She probably got a sugar high. I bought her chocolates for our anniversary." Said Duo.
"You lucky little shit, you get away with chocolates, I had to buy Erin a diamond bracelet. It's not like I mind but its been eight months and I'm still paying on the damn thing. And what really gets me ticked is she only wore it once. I swear I will never understand women." Kyle sighed raking his hands through his mop of curly black hair.
"I don't even think God understands women." Duo muttered.
"It would help if he'd give us an instruction manual." Laughed Kyle.
"According to Hilde I don't follow instructions so I'd still be screwed." Duo said as he went back to sorting wires inside the gutted out control panel.
"Well you don't pay attention to time either. It's a quarter to six, I'm gonna start picking up." He said as he left Duo to finish the frustrating job.
A half an hour later Duo fell on the couch rubbing his temples. Whoever had rigged the wiring in that shuttle control panel should be shot. It was obvious that they didn't know what the hell they were doing. Because of their stupidity all he had to show for an entire days work was one massive headache.
Bracing his elbows on his knees he rested his head in his hands. He could hear pots clanging and the faint sound of singing drifting from the kitchen. He smiled slightly at the soothing sound. Hilde had a beautiful voice. It was one her many hidden talents. Listening to the soft rise and fall of her voice he felt himself slowly relax. She had that effect on him. No matter what was wrong just the sound of her voice could make everything better.
As if summoned by his thoughts he felt her soft hands close over his. Looking up he found himself staring into her bright blue eyes. Eyes he could lose himself in. Their glowing exuberance filled his chest with an overwhelming surge of emotions. It never failed, the hold she had over him just seemed to grow stronger everyday. But what made it all worth it was the answering glimmer shining in her baby blues. A soft smile curved his lips as her fingers entwined with his. Her face, just inches away, filled his vision as he leaned closer brushing her lips with his ever so softly.
The air between them fairly crackled with electricity. He felt her lean closer into the kiss as she moved her lips against his. His headache long forgotten, the fuzzy feeling intensified completely stopping all thoughts. Her lips parted eagerly as he nibbled gently. He heard her whimper faintly as they invaded each other's mouths, their tongues sliding together seeking, tasting. She was like a drug, the perfect drug, just one hit and he was ready to sell his soul.
Pulling back he watched her eyes blink open. Her red swollen lips curved into a wicked grin. He returned her smile tiredly. Finaly completely relaxed his exhaustion hit him full force. Sitting back he pulled her onto his lap wrapping his arms tightly around her small waist. Gently she brushed his unruly hair from his eyes her expression showing concern.
"Sweetie, you're exhausted. I mean ten hours a day seven days a week, you're wearing yourself out." She whispered the words softly nuzzling his neck.
"But I need to get that panel fixed. I can get two thousand credits for that thing." He sighed. At the feel of her fingers playing with his hair his eyes slid closed and his exhaustion slowly turned to arousal.
"Can I convince you to take off tomorrow?" She asked grinning evilly as she began placing tiny kisses along his jaw. Reaching his ear she nibbled gently and he shivered involuntarily.
"Hilde…. sto.. stop it…..I…I can't think when you do that." He groaned moving his down her back and over her ass.
"You know you love it." She chuckled.
"Yeah, too much." He whispered.
"Please, we can close the garage tomorrow and have the whole day to ourselves. Ya know, if ya say yes I'll make it worth your while." She breathed huskily. Slipping her hands under his shirt she trailed her fingers teasingly up his sides.
"I never can tell you no." He sighed shifting against the tight restriction of his pants. Giving him a peck on the lips she smiled innocently and climbed off his lap. His eyes widened and his jaw dropped in disbelief as he realized she wasn't going to finish what she started.
"Hey! Oh come on! You can't leave me like this." He complained motioning to the proof of his erection.
"Go wash up, dinners almost ready." She laughed as she returned to the kitchen.
All through dinner, when he wasn't bitching, Duo watched Hilde with avid curiosity. She was in an unusually good mood. She was beaming as bright as a light bulb and there was an unmistakable sparkle in her eyes. He knew her like a book, a very well read book. She was excited about something. Damn, if taking a day off made her that happy he'd have to do it more often.
"If you can get two thousand for that panel then we can pay Shane for that shipment of parts last month. We still owe James one-fifty for taking the scrap last week. The rest can go to employee pay. My visit with Dr. Thompson was eighty but that can wait till next month." She said as he half listened to the list of bills due. When she mentioned doctor he snapped back to full attention. He had completely forgotten she'd gone to the doctor's that morning.
"How did your appointment go?" He asked mildly curious. If anything had been wrong she would have told him right away.
"It went fine. I'm in good shape and I'm pregnant." She said nonchalantly.
At that unfortunate moment Duo was about to swallow a mouth full of drink and at her words he almost choked.
"WHAT!" He wheezed.
"I'm pregnant. We're gonna have a baby." She said her voice trembling slightly. He studied her expression intently knowing she was telling the truth.
"Oh my God, you're serious. You're not fucking with me are you?" He asked his tone conveying the depth of his shock.
"No Duo." She said quietly still unsure of how to judge his reaction.
"Holy shit! I can't believe this, I'm gonna be a daddy." He stared at her his eyes wide and a slow smile starting to light his face. Suddenly he jumped up from his chair and pulled Hilde from hers. Wrapping his arms around her waist he spun her around laughing in pure happiness.
"You're not mad?" She asked as he set her feet on the ground again. The tension left her body as his expression softened.
"Hell no! I'm just…." He paused trying to find the right word.
"Surprised?" she offered.
"I guess you could say that." He laughed. He couldn't hide his amazement and it showed in his eyes and in his voice. "I thought you couldn't get pregnant. I thought we had to plan this stuff and you'd be on medicine and all."
"We lucked out. I didn't even know. I haven't been sick or anything." She said grinning as he pulled back and looked down at her mostly flat stomach.
"How many months are you?" He asked softly.
"Three, that means the baby will be born in November." She replied pulling him close again and resting her head against his shoulder.
"Geez, I can't believe it Hilde. We're gonna be parents." He laughed excitedly.
"I have to go back next week to take an ultra sound. You want to come with me." She asked hopefully.
"Yeah, I want to meet this doctor guy and make sure he's taking care of my girl." He said his voice taking on an edge of protectiveness. As he spoke he kissed the top of her head stroking her hair gently.
"I know you'll take care of me so I'm not worried." She said her voice firm with absolute faith.
"I love you babe." He whispered softly overwhelmed by the multitude of emotions surging through him.
"I love you too." She sighed hugging him even more tightly. Suddenly she looked up a slight smirk crossing her lips. "How much do you love me?"
"A lot, why?" He asked suspiciously.
"Then you can load the dish washer." She laughed.
"You gonna make that worth my while too?" He grinned wickedly.
"Oh you just wait. I'll blow your mind with what I'm gonna do." She grinned.
"I'd rather you blow me." He said huskily, then laughed at the slight blush that stained her cheeks.
"Maybe I'll do that too but the dishes come first." She chuckled. He tried to pull her closer but she wiggled out of his arms.
Watching her walk away he stifled a groan. She knew just how to tease him but she always made it worth it. She never left him hanging too long. Realizing he was wasting time he set to the task of loading the dishes.
Hilde was just about to unbutton her shirt when the object of her thoughts appeared in the bathroom doorway. A fine mist of steam was filling the small room as the tub continued to fill with hot water. Her heart beat increased mixing with the pounding sound of running water. She laughed softly as she realized that Duo probably didn't even bother to scrape the plates before stacking them in the dishwasher. She knew she couldn't have been in the bathroom more than five minutes. What could she do? She loved him anyway.
Facing him she held out a hand in invitation but he shook his head grinning lecherously. Knowing what he wanted she felt the blood rush to her face. Slowly she unhooked one button at a time. She felt a heady rush of control as all his concentration was focused on the expanding view of her skin. Letting the shirt fall open she slipped the material off her shoulders dropping it carelessly on the floor. She shivered as the warm damp air flowed teasingly over her flesh. Duo's eyes darkened and she felt the now familiar thrill of desire.
Unbuttoning her jeans she wiggled the clinging fabric down her hips. Kicking them to the side she raised her hands behind her back to undo her bra. Slowly sliding the straps down her arms she let the flimsy piece of silk move down over her breasts. The rough lace rubbed against her nipples making the skin tighten erotically. She was hot and wet. She could feel each new pulsing wave of desire center between her thighs. Tossing the bra on the floor she watched Duo intently. The raw hunger burning in his narrowed eyes made her breath catch in her throat. Wanting to push him a little further she began slipping off her panties. His whole body visibly stiffened and she smiled. The damp under-ware joined the rest of her clothes on the floor as she motioned for him to come closer.
"Come here." She whispered breathlessly.
He pushed away from the doorframe already pulling his shirt over his head. Her eyes eagerly roamed over his bare flesh watching the play of muscles as he moved toward her. Reaching out she grasped the waist of his jeans and pulled him closer. As she unbuttoned his pants she felt him run his hands down her hips. Letting his jeans fall to the floor she tugged on his boxers. His arousal was evident beneath the black silk as she pulled them down impatiently. Teasingly he moved his hands from her hips to her firm backside.
Suddenly through the thick haze of sexual need clouding her mind she realized the water was still running filling the tub. Cursing under her breath she pulled away from his heated touch and reached over turning off the faucet. Without warning he grabbed her by the waist pulling her with him in the tub. They sank into the soothingly hot water sloshing half the water onto the tiled floor. Vaguely the mess they were making entered her mind but she couldn't focus on the thought. He pulled her astride his lap rubbing against her. The delicious feel of the water swirling around them only added to the pleasure of his teasing movements.
Not ready to relinquish control she caught his lips in a crushing kiss. Guiding his hands she moved them over her breasts moaning softly as he caressed the soft flesh rubbing his thumbs over her hard nipples. Teasing his tongue with hers she attacked his senses mercilessly. Sliding her hand between them she guided him inside her. He tried to thrust against her but she using all her body weight she pinned his waist to the tub gaining control.
She could feel the need building within Duo. The longer she held him down motionless the rougher his touch became. He pinched her nipples, twisting the puckered skin between his fingers making her gasp in pleasured pain. He tore his mouth from hers moving his kisses to her throat. Grabbing a fist full of her hair he tilted her head to the side biting the exposed skin sharply. She could feel herself weakening. The fire burning inside her was now a raging inferno consuming her entire body. When he reached the base of her throat he sucked hard causing her to thrust her hips automatically. The little bit of friction sent tremors pulsing up her spine.
He continued mouth her neck distracting her. She didn't even realize he moved his hand from her breast till she felt his fingers begin to stroke her clit furiously. Hissing in pleasure she couldn't hold out any longer. With agonizing slowness she began to move against him. Rocking her hips he slid deeper into her with each small movement. Steadily she built up speed. Lifting her hips more and more he began to thrust with her imbedding himself in her tight passage. She could feel the world around fade away. All consciousness beyond the exquisite feel of her husband's touch was lost.
His mouth and his fingers had her in frenzy as he drove into her. Gasping she gripped his waist mindlessly. Bucking her hips violently she heard him groan. Then all at once she felt the pleasure burst. Wave after wave assaulted her senses as they came simultaneously.
Snuggling against his chest she rested her head on his shoulder completely drained. He wrapped his arms around her holding her tight and rubbed her back gently. She could feel the pounding of his heart beneath her hand. She smiled softly, her own heart near bursting with love just for him. Losing track of time they remained that way just enjoying the closeness of each other's presence. Safe in his arms she was more than content to let time stop.
"Do you really think we can do this?" He asked suddenly his deep soft voice filled with uncertainty. His words echoed through the silence rousing her back to reality.
"Do what?" She asked unsure of what he referred to.
"Be good parents." He sighed, shifting slightly in the now cool water he looked down into her eyes his own reflecting his doubts.
"Yeah. Children need love and I know we'll give more than enough of that." She answered smiling softly.
"But still Hilde, do you realize what we're getting into? Our kid will be totally dependant on us. Everything he needs and everything he wants is up to us to give it to him. What if I screw this up?" He whispered.
"Sweetie listen to me, all we can do is try our hardest. Have a little faith in yourself. I know you'll make a wonderful father." She answered firmly.
"How can I be a good father figure if I've never had one to set an example for me?" He asked heatedly still not fully believing her words.
"Follow your heart and do whatever your heart tells you. I know it's easier said than done but do you honestly think you'd knowingly do anything you didn't feel was right?" She countered, her voice daring him to disagree.
"I guess not, but it don…" He started to protest but she silenced him by placing a finger against his lips.
"I'm terrified Duo, I really am. I don't know what to expect either. I don't know how to answer every problem and fix every mistake. I can barely remember my mother much less try to see things from her perspective. The only thing I do know is that I want this more than anything." She paused as tears flooded her eyes and her voice cracked. "This child is ours, a part of you and a part of me. And God knows I wanted to give you a child on my own. We could have planned it all we wanted but I don't think anyone's ever ready. Besides, we've made it this far haven't we? We made a home for ourselves together. We're where we're supposed to be and this is just another piece of our life that falls into place. It won't be easy but I think we can do this, please trust me." She whispered pleadingly. Looking directly into his eyes she saw the emotion raging within them.
"How do you do it? How do you know just what to say to make me feel better?" He asked softly.
"I'm returning the favor." She said smiling in relief as he laughed, his eyes sparkling with renewed determination.
"Now we gotta tell everyone the good news. I can't wait to see Quatre's face, I say two minutes and he'll start bawling like a baby." He chuckled.
"And Relena's gonna have my head for not calling her the minute I got home." She stated, with a smirk crossing her lips she sat up draping her arms around his neck, "You do realize that we have to start thinking about baby names and Godparents and nursery furniture. Oh God, I'm tired already." She groaned.
"Speaking of tired, I want you on your ass, got it. You're not going to run the streets and all that good shit. I'll do the groceries and stuff from now on." As he spoke he laid his hand gently against her slightly protruding abdomen. Suddenly his eyes narrowed and his lips pursed as if ready for a lecture. "You're too skinny. I'm gonna have to fatten you up."
"Just wait, before you know it I'll be as big as a house." She warned.
"Fine by me babe." He grinned.
"We'll see." She muttered rolling her eyes at his silly smile.
Four months later
"So how is everything?" Hilde asked the sandy haired girl smiling at her through the vid-phone.
"The usual, council meetings and political functions and boring diplomatic BS." Relena laughed dryly. Almost instantly her smile turned genuine as she asked, "How are you and the baby?"
"Fine and dandy. The only trouble I have is insomnia. Some nights I'm up till three in the morning. Other than that everything is going okay. I'll be so glad when I have this kid. My back is killing me." Shifting uncomfortably, Hilde looked at Relena and grinned mischievously. "So when is it your turn?"
"Not anytime soon. I can wait a couple of years. After all it's not like Heero's ready for a kid and I really don't have time for one. Besides, we're not even married yet. Eventually we will and you'll be the first to know." She promised.
"Well right now your man and my man are glued to the TV watching some basketball thingy. There is just something about men, beer and sports that I'll never understand." Hilde sighed.
"I know exactly what you mean. I think it's genetic." Relena laughed. Hilde watched the other girl glance at her watch as her smile turned apologetic. "I have to go. I have a meeting in twenty minutes. I'll call you later okay. And try and get some rest, you look a little pale."
"Will do. Later girl." Hilde said ending the connection.
Leaning back in the chair she shifted positions again. There was a tiny ache stretching from her stomach all the way to her back. Soothingly she rubbed her rounded middle as a soft smile played on her lips. She could feel the baby kick against her palm and she laughed softly. The feeling never failed to amaze her. She could hardly believe there was a tiny life growing inside her. It was almost like a dream but dreams don't give you aches and pains and wake you up in the middle of the night from a fit of violent kicking.
Humming softly she leaned her head back and closed her eyes. For the last couple of weeks she'd hardly gotten any sleep. If it wasn't the baby then she just couldn't relax. Duo had woken up several times to find her pacing the living room or sprawled out on the couch watching infomercials. Sometimes he could coax her back to bed and other times he would end up falling asleep with his head on her stomach. Last night had been the worst so far but with Heero visiting for the week she ended up sitting in front of the window watching the sun come up.
Now she was dead tired and the annoying pains just wouldn't go away. They had kept her up the last couple of nights. It hadn't really hurt but it was just enough to make her uncomfortable. Today however, they were beginning to hurt. Little sharp prickly pains that made her catch her breath. It was probably due to lack of rest. The doctor had told her he wanted off her feet as much as possible and Duo pitched a fit anytime he caught her up and about saying that she should listen to others for a change. As a matter of fact those had been his very words just this morning.
She'd been up all night and the little terror in her stomach was obviously hungry so to stop her stomach from waking up the entire house she went to make herself some toast. Innocently standing by the kitchen counter she hadn't expected Duo to storm in and physically pick her up and carry her to their bed. He had glared at her and she knew why he was so ticked off. He knew she hadn't slept, that was the only reason she would be up and functioning at four-thirty in the morning. He wasn't stupid and he knew her too well. So like the sweetheart he was he made her toast for her and brought it to her. Then he gave direct orders for her not to move the entire day. She tried, she really did, but laying on her back in one position for five hours straight almost had her in tears. The weight on her back hurt worse than the prickly pains in her stomach.
Now here she was sitting in the office without her husband's permission. Yeah right, it would be a cold day in hell before she'd ever give him that much say so. His head was much too big as it was. He had the whole "Proud Papa" act down perfectly. All anyone had to do was mention the baby and he was glowing brighter than a hundred watt light bulb. And all of a sudden he convinced himself that he's an expert on the subject of pregnant women. Though she did have to give him credit she never thought she would see the day he'd read one of the many books the doctor gave her on staying healthy while expecting.
She smiled as she heard his laughter drift in from the living room. He meant well and knowing that was probably the only reason she hadn't killed him yet. It was a little frustrating having him bossing her around but she knew he was doing it for her. He was so overprotective it was almost ridiculous. Thank God Heero came when he did. At least some of Duo's attention was focused on his friend and not her. It wasn't really that she minded being coddled and babied, especially by Duo, but sometimes it was downright annoying. But she could put up with it, just five more weeks and they'd have their new baby.
At a particularly hard kick her eyes snapped open. Not for the first time she wondered if the baby could hear her thoughts. Did the little angel know just how impatiently Mommy and Daddy were for her birth? Did she know how much they loved her? She liked to think so. One of the books she read said talking and singing was good for the fetus. It also said that the baby could also feel if you touched the stomach area. So she tried to sing and talk to it as much as possible, and Duo loved to sit behind her and lean her against his chest and rub her stomach for her. And at night he always fell a sleep with his hand on her belly.
Thinking of sleep she yawned tiredly and made her way back to the bedroom. Gingerly and she crawled into the bed almost dreading the limited positions her body allowed. She could feel the weariness start to take over. She was exhausted and it was silly to fight it. Muttering curses under her breath she shifted around till she found a somewhat comfortable position lying partly on her side. Closing her eyes she forced herself to relax as she listened to the low monotone rise and fall of Heero's voice and Duo's faint laughter. Ignoring the slight pain in her middle she let the much-needed sleep claim her consciousness.
Suddenly Hilde jerked awake knowing something had woken her up. In the dark room she looked at the digital clock her mind vaguely registering that it was evening now. Laying completely still she tried to get her foggy mind to function when the pain hit. It was unlike anything she'd ever felt in her life. The clawing tearing pain made her breath freeze in her throat and tears well up in her eyes. She couldn't move, she couldn't breathe as the agonizing feeling radiated through her entire body.
As the pain eased she struggled to sit up. Choking back the tears she gritted her teeth as instantly the dull ache turned vicious ripping through her small frame. She gripped the sheets tightly fighting against the pain as much as she could. She felt dizzy and weighed down almost like she was drained of all energy. The only coherent thought in her fuzzy mind to was get to Duo. Weakly she pulled at the blanked twisted around her legs. Gasping through her tears she tugged at the thick material with all her might. Through her pain she felt the cool air hit her legs sharply. Wet. Her legs were wet?
Touching her leg she felt the warm sticky fluid against her fingertips. Forcing her eyes open all thoughts froze at the sight of crimson everywhere. Blood. As another sharp stab of pain hit she screamed in panic. Loosing the fight to remain upright she collapsed against the bed surrendering to the pain. Black dots swam in front of her eyes and the room began to spin. From far away she could hear pounding footsteps running down the hall. The last thing she heard before the darkness consumed her was Duo 's frantic voice calling her name.
Pacing the length of the small waiting room Duo glanced at the clock for the hundredth time. Three hours, three fucking hours and they wouldn't tell him anything. Raking his hand through his unkempt hair he swallowed hard fighting the tears burning in the back of his throat. He was scared. He couldn't remember ever being this scared in his entire life. His entire world was hanging in the balance of the Doctors verdict.
He stopped before the window staring sightlessly out into the dark night. In the reflecting glare of light he could see his own haggard face staring back at him. Red puffy eyes and a forbidding expression was all he saw before he turned away. He could feel Heero's observant eyes following his every move. The expressionless stare was the least of his concerns at the moment. He was thankful Heero was the one with him because at the moment he wasn't so sure he could handle sympathetic glances and meaningless consoling words. It was taking everything within him not to breakdown.
Why did this have to happen? Why did he have to go through this again? Hadn't she suffered enough because of him? Obviously not because fate was screwing things up again. Just when everything was going perfect it all had to blow up right in his face. Hilde was his life, as silly as it might be and as much as he knew he should never have let her that close, she had become the center of his little universe. It was hard going through life alone. He knew all about loneliness and being misunderstood. But she had been the one person who could relate to what he felt. She had been the one look past his masks and push past all the barriers he erected. He was defenseless against her, it was that simple. She forced her way into his heart and now she had it completely. If he lost her now he'd lose everything, even his soul.
Looking down at his feet he eyes caught sight of the dark brown spots and smears on his shirt and jeans. Inwardly he flinched at the sight of her blood. He never thought one person could bleed so much. Her injuries during the war were mostly internal and there hadn't been that much blood, but tonight it was everywhere. She'd been so cold when he touched her and in the midst of his panic he wrapped her up in the blanket. Holding her as Heero drove them to the hospital her blood seeped through the blanket. Her skin was white her lips were blue. He'd seen plenty of dead people in his life and she was pretty damn close to it. And it was the worst feeling in the world to hold her knowing she was slipping away and he could do one fucking thing about it.
I know you'll take care of me so I'm not worried. Her words echoed through his head tauntingly increasing the guilt already suffocating him. She trusted him. She put all her faith in him and when it counted he failed her completely. He should have expected it. When had he ever done anything right? Everyone who had ever depended on him paid the price. So many people lost their lives because he failed them. Now not only was his wife going to suffer but his child too.
He felt sick. Swallowing against the bile that rose in his throat he dragged in a deep breath. The one good thing he'd ever done and he managed to destroy that too. He had actually led himself to believe that he could do it. He could raise his child to be a better person and give it all the love and stability that he never had. But no, the kid wasn't even here yet and he'd already fucked up beyond repair.
Clutching the gold cross around hanging around his neck he began to whisper all the prayers ingrained into his memory. He chanted the words softly and for the first time actually really paid attention to what he was saying. Tears blurred his vision and he squeezed his eyes shut against them to no avail. One by one they traced down his pale cheeks. What if God didn't hear his prayers? What if his sins were to great to ever be forgiven? What if their lives were the forfeit for his choices?
He was gripping the gold symbol so tightly he felt the edges cut into the soft flesh of his palm. The small amount of pain brought a bitter smile to his lips. He released the cross and looked at the traces of red smearing his skin. Blood…Pain…Faith… One without the other was almost meaningless. But you could only give and take so much from the endless cycle. He was out faith, he would shed no more blood and he was numb to the pain. No physical pain could compare to the pain raging inside his heart.
"Mr. Maxwell."
He stiffened as the Doctor's voice shattered the still silence of the small room. His heart slammed into his throat as he turned to face the middle-aged man. He scrubbed at his eyes and took a deep breath bracing himself for the inevitable. The grim look on the Doctor's face was anything but reassuring. God please…..
"How are they?" He asked softly, his voice hoarse and scratchy.
"The baby is fine. Congratulations, you have a little girl. She weighed in four pounds six ounces. Her vital signs are wonderful considering the stress she and your wife went through. She is a little under weight and I want to monitor her for a few days." Dr. Thompson replied softly. Duo studied his expression intently feeling a tiny amount of relief. The doctor was giving nothing away.
"What about my wife?" He asked almost dreading the answer he would receive.
"She's been stabilized. I'm going to be completely honest with you Duo, the next twenty-four hours will tell. We had to emergency surgery. I'm still not completely sure what caused the hemorrhaging. I had to perform a hysterectomy to stop the bleeding. She has lost a lot of blood and she still hasn't regained consciousness yet. I'm keeping her in recovery for one more hour. If her vitals are still the same we'll move her to a private room." He answered.
"Was there anything we could have done to prevent this?" Duo asked. He needed to know, if he fucked up he need to know.
"No, I've only seen this twice in my entire career. You are a very lucky man. Ten more minutes, twenty at most, and you would have lost them both." He said.
"Honestly Doc, what are her chances?" There was a pause and Duo felt his stomach twist. When the Doctor spoke he didn't meet Duo's eyes.
"I can't predict the outcom….." He started to answer.
"Man, you know what you're dealing with. Just tell me, do you think she'll make it?" Duo asked his facade of calm vanishing as his eyes glowed with the fierce emotions filling him.
"She flat-lined twice on the operating table, frankly I'm surprised she made it through the surgery. She may pull through and she may not, I don't know. But from the look of it now if everything stays the way it is she has a fairly good chance." He sighed sadly.
"Thanks. So now what?" Duo whispered.
"We wait and we watch." He said, then a soft smile curved his lips as he continued, "The baby is in the nursery. You can go see her. I'll send someone to let you know if we move Hilde. She's made it this far, don't give up on her yet."
"I won't." He smiled faintly the whole conversation swirling in his mind.
Duo continued to stand there staring off in space as the doctor left. He didn't even look up when Heero walked toward him. His thoughts were total chaos. He felt like laughing and crying. He was a father. He had a little girl. A little girl who might never get the chance to know her mother. The thought killed him. No, Hilde was going to live and she was going to get better and she was going to raise her daughter to be wonderful person too. He had to think that, if he didn't he'd go crazy.
"I'm going to see her, you coming?" He asked abruptly. When Heero nodded he started off toward the nursery not waiting to see if he followed.
Standing before the glass panel he looked at the tiny bundle in awe. The nurse brought the infant up to the window so Duo could get a closer look. She was precious. He'd never seen anything so small in all his life. The pink blanket she was wrapped in swallowed her and the only thing visible was her cute face, a patch of black fuzzy hair and one little fist.
He pressed his fingers to the glass overcome with the urge to hold her. This is my kid. The words repeated themselves over and over in his mind as the pain crushing his chest lessened in place of the rush of love he felt for his daughter. As he watched her eyes blinked open. The confused expression crossing her adorable face made him smile softly.
"She's cute." The stoic reply made Duo turn his head sharply. Heero's normal impassive features softened and the hint of a smile quirked his lips.
"Yeah she is isn't she." He sighed turning to face his daughter again. "She looks just like Hilde."
"She's lucky, she could look like you." Heero said.
At the unexpected comment Duo couldn't help but laugh. Heero really had changed since the war. It seemed like everything had changed for the better. If only everything would be okay again. Hilde had to pull through. There was no way he could do this on his own. He couldn't raise a child by himself. His daughter needed her mother. He needed his wife.
"Excuse me." A soft voice interrupted his thoughts. He turned to face the nurse trying to fight the hope that wanted to rise within him.
"Yes?"
"You're wife has been moved to room 512. You're free to see her when ever you wish." The woman said politely.
"Thanks." Duo muttered turning to Heero his eyes asking a silent question.
"No, you go. I'm going to wait for Relena. Quatre should be here soon too." He replied.
Glancing one more time at his daughter, Duo nodded turning to follow the nurse. Almost in a daze he walked the connecting halls trying to brace himself. For what? She was dying and if he could be with her than that was all that should matter. Too bad he couldn't go with her. He'd been through this once already, damn it! He'd sat beside her bed and begged and prayed and pleaded hoping against hope that she was stronger, stronger that what the doctors expected and stronger than he even thought her to be. It had worked once but what were the chances of them being so lucky again.
Reaching her room the nurse took her leave. Alone he pushed open the door, the soft light from the lamp making the room seem welcoming. Instantly his eyes snapped to the still figure lying in the center of the bed. Walking over he pushed down the railing and sat gingerly on the edge of the mattress. Taking her cold limp hand in his he squeezed tightly terrified to let go. Her skin was white, colorless, matching the stark hospital sheets she was lying on. Just looking at her he felt helpless. There was nothing he could do, it was completely beyond his control now. Her life was in the hands of God.
At the thought he laughed bitterly. As a child he didn't believe in God for this very reason. God killed indiscriminately. His wrath spared no one and the innocent paid for the sins of the wicked. Yet God was supposed to be fair, right? He was supposed to be the embodiment of love and peace and forgiveness, right? Then why the hell was he making her suffer! Why wasn't he the one lying here? He had the blood of hundreds on his hands yet he was alive and disgustingly well watching his angle fade away. If God were fair he wouldn't do this, not again!
How much more could he take? He could feel it, the hope and faith that he found dying with every shallow breath that passed Hilde's lips. Her life was slipping away with every second that passed and he could feel it like physical pain, like his heart was being ripped form his chest, literally. And it was of course. He was dying right along with her. And that was the beauty of this sick joke. He was dying but he couldn't DIE. The thought made him want to laugh hysterically. No, hell didn't await you when you died, hell could claim you anytime it wanted and he was falling into the flames quickly.
Changing positions he crawled in the bed next to her cradling her against his chest. Holding her as tightly as he could he closed his eyes breathing in the familiar lilac sent of her hair. If tried really hard maybe he could pretend it was just a normal night and they were going to sleep. He'd give anything just to be at home in their bed instead of here in this hellhole. They had their whole lives ahead of them, she just couldn't die now. They had made their life together, they were supposed to be together for always. No, she wasn't going o die, he didn't call himself 'Shinigami' for nothing and she was not going to be the next casualty in his life. Salvation be damned he'd sell his soul if he had to.
"Baby, You have to do me a big favor okay." He whispered softly, knowing she couldn't hear him but speaking anyway needing to hear something besides their breathing, "If you see any white lights or any pretty angels don't you dare follow them! If you do so help me God I will never ever forgive you! And neither will your daughter. Yeah, we had a little girl just like you said and she beautiful just like you. I know you want to see her so you have to try and fight this, okay."
The silence that met his words echoed his frustrated laughter. This was hopeless, totally hopeless. She couldn't hear a word he said and its not like it would matter anyway. Even if she could her body was still failing her. Hilde was a fighter but even the best could only handle so much. There was nothing left to do but to take once more chance on faith and hope miracles really did happen.
With one hand holding hers and the other clutching his cross he began to pray hoping that it was enough.
She could hear voices. She couldn't make out who spoke or what the words were but she could definitely make out that there was someone talking. She struggled against the heavy blackness surrounding her. The only thing beside herself in the darkness was the sound. She felt weighed down as she tried to follow the voice. The soft mumbled tone was soothing and she led herself drift toward the noise. The nothingness that surrounded her was quite comforting in itself. There was no pain, no fear just the endless relaxing feeling of floating. But something nagged at the back of her mind. She felt like she was forgetting something, something important. What could she possibly have forgotten? She was so relaxed and comfortable just letting the gentle pull of the darkness lead her.
She could hear the voice getting louder. The words were still unclear but it was definitely louder. Who was talking? Mild curiosity filled her and she felt the current of the darkness pick up speed. This was very interesting. Wherever she was she had to be safe. She felt completely at ease. She could feel her mind wanting to drift off too sleep. The more she lost herself to the darkness the slower she moved toward the voice. The voice, yes, she was curious about that. Well she would investigate the voice then she would fall into the darkness. First things first.
The muffled sound began to clear the more she floated. She didn't know where she was floating to though. There was nothing at all anywhere. It was almost like she was suspended in space only it wasn't cold and there were no stars to light her way. Her way to where?
Something was urging her forward. The clearer the voice became the more intense the need to reach it became. She was moving fast now. She could feel the nothingness flow against her almost like a really soft velvet blanket. She was getting excited. The voice was clearer and she could actually make out a word. It sounded like "please".
That voice? It sounded so familiar just hearing it made her want to move faster. She could make out more words now but she was too confused to place them. Then she heard a name. Hilde… That name, that was her name. All at once she knew the voice. In the darkness before her she even saw the speakers face, his bright violet eyes, a teasing grin and shaggy brown hair. Duo….
Suddenly the darkness was gone in one blinding flash of white light. There was no sound, no voice, only hot burning pain. She could feel each nerve in her body awaken from the merciful numbness. She could feel her mind becoming clearer by the second. Duo, it was definitely him, she could hear the faint sound if his mumbling over the ringing in her ears. She could smell his cologne just as she realized he was holding her. She could feel it now, his strong arms around her, overriding the pain of her aching muscles. She tried to snuggle closer into his safe and warm embrace but she couldn't move, her own body was still pulling itself together from the inside out.
Duo could feel sleep trying to claim his mind but he refused to give in. Shifting slightly pressed more closely against Hilde's still form as he paused for a moment from the prayers he'd been saying nonstop for the last six hours. Heero had only disturbed him once to tell him that he was going to the house with the others and that they would be here today during visiting hours. It was six in the morning so that gave him two hours to pull himself together enough not to be an emotional mess when everyone arrived.
Rubbing his blurry burning eyes he started to sit up so he could stretch his body when a faint moan made him freeze. Holding his breath watched Hilde closely for any sign of movement. He strained to listen over the pounding of his heart. After a moment he was beginning to think he was imagining things when her fingers moved slightly and her eyelids began to flutter open.
"Hilde, open your eyes baby. If you can hear me open your eyes." He said the words his voice bordering on panic. God, please let her wake up…please…
This time she managed to crack one eye open slightly against the bright sunlight streaming in through the window. As he looked at her he realized there was a little more color to her cheeks now. Grasping her hand he squeezed and in return he felt her fingers move closing over his. It was enough, she was awake. Half laughing half crying he gave into the torrent of emotions building just under the surface. She was awake. She was going to be okay. He could breathe now. Well he had to stop laughing like a madman first.
"Duo." She breathed his name so faintly he almost hadn't heard it. When she tried to speak again he took a deep breath and leaned closer. "The baby…"
"She's fine. You know, you were right, we had a little girl and she looks just like you." He grinned as her lips curved into a weak but grateful smile. "If you stay awake you can see her later."
She nodded her head slightly as she shivered. Gently he pulled her against him wrapping his arms protectively around her. He ran his fingers through her hair as she snuggled closer to his warmth. The relief that filled him was so intense he couldn't stop smiling. He kept touching her just to make sure she was really awake. He kept talking saying anything that came to mind just to get a response. Each time she spoke her voice was a little stronger. However, after a while he noticed she could hardly keep her eyes open.
"You okay?" He asked.
"Tired, very tired." She replied.
"Get some rest, the nurses will be around soon so sleep while you can." He kissed her head and started to get up.
"Don't leave me, please." She whispered as she continued to clutch his shirt in her clenched hands.
"Whatever you want babe." He said softly. Pulling her close he sighed finally relaxing. With in moments they were both fast asleep.
Six years later
"Sarah, tell Daddy goodnight." Hide said as she glanced at the clock noticing it was 9 pm.
"Momma, I don't wanna." The little girl whined.
"You have school tomorrow so I say its bed time." Hilde said firmly as she stood up from her seat on the couch.
"But Daddy lets me stay up." Sarah said as she crawled up on her father's lap.
"Oh really?" Hilde turned her glare on Duo he laughed nervously and held up his hands in surrender.
"It was only once." As he spoke his grin turned mischievous and he began to tickle Sarah scolding the child over her squealing laughter. "And you, missy, weren't supposed to say anything."
Hilde couldn't help but laugh at their antics. Duo acted more like a child than Sarah did sometimes. She knew he shouldn't be getting her so wound up right before bed but it was too late. They had both been extremely hyper all weekend. As a result the living room looked like an explosion in a toy store, or maybe a Laundromat from all the blankets and pillows thrown about, the only remaining evidence of the tent they attempted to make.
"Okay, break it up you two. You guys can have at it all you want tomorrow." She said clapping her hands to get their attention. Instantly she was assailed with two pairs of pitiful violet eyes. That is so unfair…
"Mommy, just a little while longer, please!" She pleaded, stubbornly throwing her arms around Duo's neck and refusing to let go. No sooner had the words left her mouth when she yawned.
"See you're tired. You can stay up next weekend Sweetie. Right now it's nite nite." This time the tone of Hilde's voice left no room for discussion.
"G'night." She whispered her lips pursing in a pout. Knowing when to give in Sarah placed a big wet smack on Duo's cheek then scampered off his lap following her mother from the living room.
Leading Sarah to her room Hilde sat her on the end of the bed as she began to brush her daughters long ebony hair. She hummed softly gently running her fingers through the silky strands. Duo wouldn't let a pair of scissors touch the child's hair and as a result it reached down to her knees. If Hilde didn't braid it before bed she couldn't brush the knots out the next morning. And Sarah loved it. She loved anyone to play with her hair just like Duo. Hilde smiled to herself. With the exception of her violet eyes Sarah was the exact image of her but that's where the similarities ended. Her personality matched Duo's perfectly.
Dividing the hair in three sections she began to plat it into a thick braid. When finished she pulled back the covers as Sarah flopped against her pillow. Tucking the sheet around her tiny body Hilde leaned down and pressed a kiss to her forehead. In response Sarah wrapped her arms around her neck squeezing tightly.
"Now say your prayers and get some sleep." She said softly. She started to turn the off the lamp beside the bed when Sarah grabbed her hand.
"Don't turn it off, I don't like the dark." She whispered.
"But you always sleep with your lamp off." Hilde said slightly confused. Sarah squeezed her hand harder and started to bite her lip nervously. Soothingly Hilde brushed her bangs out her eyes and smiled softly. "If you want it on I'll leave it on but there's nothing to be afraid of Honey. Besides Daddy and me are right across the hall. Just think about happy things and you'll be asleep in no time."
Sarah nodded as she clutched her teddy bear against her chest and closed her eyes. Hilde had just reached the door when she heard a faint, "G'Night Mommy."
"Goodnight Sweetie." She said closing the door behind her.
Crossing the hall to her room she smiled at the site that greeted her. Duo was sitting on the edge of the bed clad only in his sweat pants. Busy stetting the alarm he didn't notice her walk across the room. Biting her lip to keep from laughing she crept up behind him silently. She had just reached out her hand intending to make him jump when his soft voice rang clear in the silent room.
"Don't even think about it." He warned not quite hiding the amusement in his voice. Glaring at his back she cursed silently.
"One of these days I'm gonna get you." She sighed in mock disappointment.
"Look babe, I'm the master. The only way you'll ever sneak up on me is if I let you." He replied usual cocky tone.
"Hmp!" She grunted.
Turning away she began to undress. She heard the mattress squeak as he shifted to face her. She could feel his gaze scorching her skin but she didn't turn around. She was in a playful mood and it had been way to long since the last time they'd 'played around'. She smiled to herself as she felt the spark of anticipation flutter within her. Slipping the oversized T-shirt over her head she then turned to face her husband smiling innocently.
"Its only nine-thirty, that's to early to go to bed." She whispered.
"Going to bed doesn't necessarily mean you have to sleep." He said as a wicked grin spread across his lips.
"And would you care to enlighten me as to what else it could mean." She asked softly, her eyes sparkling with mischief in the soft lamplight.
"Is a demonstration acceptable?" He asked softly as he rose from the bed and began advancing on her.
"I suppose." She giggled as his strong hands gripped her waist pulling her against him.
In response he brought his lips down her hers. Her eyes slid closed as she moved her lips against his in return. Wrapping her arms tightly around his waist she enjoyed the feel of his bare skin under her fingertips. The feel of his hands running up her sides made her press closer.
"DADDY!"
At the sound of the loud shout they pulled apart abruptly. Before either of them could move they heard the patter of little feet against the hard wood floor. Then the little bur of movement rushed through the door and right into her fathers waiting arms.
"What's the matter, munchkin?" He asked worriedly as picked her up and settling her against his hip.
"I heard them." She whispered as looked toward the bedroom door fearfully.
"Heard what?" He asked, confused.
"You know, THEM! The little people that live under the bed, like in that movie last night." She said in a rush not tearing her eyes away from the door.
"Do you want me to check under your bed?" He asked trying not to crack a smile at her fears.
"No!" She said shaking her head and clutching her teddy bear even more tightly. She was so scared he could feel her little body shaking. Duo looked at Hilde helplessly.
"You can sleep with us tonight." Hilde said softly.
Instantly Duo felt her relax somewhat in his arms. He set her down on the mattress and she scooted to the top crawling beneath the covers lying in the center of the bed. He turned to Hilde with an ironic smile crossing his lips. Leaning close his breath brushed her ear as he spoke.
"Well try this again tomorrow." He said huskily. As he pulled back he pressed a quick kiss to her cheek.
"Maybe you'll think twice before letting her watch a scary movie again." Hilde whispered smiling sweetly. He didn't miss the look of retribution in her eyes.
"No shit!" He muttered as he walked to his side of the bed. Lying on his back he closed his eyes as the room was plunged into darkness.
"Uh-oh, Daddy said a bad word." Giggled Sarah.
As Hilde's soft laughter joined in Duo tried not to grin. It was going to be a long night.
