Wer zu lebzeit gut auf Erden
wird nach dem Tod ein Engel werden
den Blick gem Himmel fragst Du dahn
warum man sie nicht sehen kahn

Erst wenn die Wolken schlafen gehen
kann man uns am Himmel sehen
wir haben Angst und sind allein

Gott weiß ich will kein Engel sein

Sie leben hinterm Sonnenschein
getrennt von uns unendlich weit
sie müssen sich an Sterne krallen
damit sie nicht vom Himmel fallen

Erst well die Wolken schlafen gehen
kann man uns am Himmel sehen
wir haben Angst und sind allein

Gott weiß ich will kein Engel sein

(Who in their lifetime is good on Earth
and will become an angel after death
you look to the sky and ask
why can't you see them

First if the clouds have gone to sleep
you can see us in the sky
we are afraid and alone

God knows I don't want to be an angel

They live behind the sunshine
separated from us, infinite expanse
they must cling to the stars (very tightly)
so they won't fall from the sky

First if the clouds have gone to sleep
you can see us in the sky
we are afraid and alone

PART FOUR

“Duo? Duo, we're here…”

Duo looked up from his lap to see the concerned eyes of Quatre looking at him. “Oh. We are?” he said dazedly, then looked around and saw the car he'd been riding in with Trowa and Quatre was empty. “I must have spaced out,” Duo said, grabbing the duffel sitting under his feet. He got out of the car and looked at the hotel that was lit up brightly in hues of blue and white.

“Sonneschein Hotel.”

“Looks happy,” Duo said under his breath. Quatre shook his head sadly. “Come on. Trowa and the others are already in the lobby,” he said, pulling at Duo's arm.

Before they could reach the lobby, even though it was a short ways away, Trowa and the others came back out. The unibanged vampire held up a key card. “No questions asked. I got three rooms,” he said.

“Will you be ok sharing a room with someone?” Quatre asked his friend concernedly. Duo nodded numbly.

“I'll stay with him,” Sally offered, being half held up by Wufei. When the werewolf shot her a look, she just smiled. “I have a feeling you might want to talk, and- no offense- but the others aren't the best at that,” she said, “With the exception of you, Quatre.”

Quatre smiled. “Yeah…that's fine, Sal,” Duo tried to smile, weakly.

“Rooms 234, -5 and -7,” Trowa said. He handed the others their keys. Wufei passed off Sally to Duo, and they began walking towards their rooms.

~*~
“I'll be fine, Duo,” Sally said when Duo set her down on one of the two beds. “Really. I'm built tougher than I look, contrary to what Wufei might say,” she laughed. Duo gave a small chuckle, before falling silent and sitting down across from Sally. The silence stretched on.

“Want to talk about it?” Sally asked softly. Duo nodded. “It…it was so weird Sal… I mean, when Zechs…”

“Zechs?” Sally knew the blonde vampire had interrogated the group, but no one had told her what happened.

“He kissed me,” Duo muttered, lowering his head and clutching at the side of it gently. “That's not what bothers me…I mean, I started thinking about what'd happened, and then it was like, why am I so angry with him? And then I started blaming Quatre and Sekra and the others for Hilde's death.

“I almost told him I loved him, but I heard Heero and Quatre. I busted him good in the nose with my head,” Duo smirked grimly at that, still looking down. “Then Sekra and the others came in, and they got us outta the chains. Sekra was fighting Zechs- I don't know what she saw. She was…she was like my sister, just like Hilde…

And then…Zechs was gonna kill us. He told me he was, and that's sort of when I realized we had a bond…Didn't know what it was called `till Quat told me. And we weren't going to run. The others just stood there…waiting to die. I keep thinking if we had run…” Duo sniffed. “Sekra bulldozed him. He… he ripped her off and…” he choked back a sob. “He killed her…”

“Duo…” Sally said compassionately, and the tear-stricken boy threw his arms around her. “I just…I lost them both! Sekra and Hilde…and Cloud, he lost Sekra and then…oh god…”

Sally blinked back her own tears, running a hand through the young boys hair. “Damn you, Treize and Zechs…” she whispered.

Duo woke up in the morning, on his own bed and the covers drawn around him. `Sal must've put me here,' he thought. His thoughts were interrupted when the aforementioned lady poked her head through the door.

“Hey, Duo!” She said. “Quatre is up- we just had to make sure Trowa was covered. Come on- we're going out to eat!”

“Did you get your hands on some morphine or something?” Duo groaned, trying to push Sekra and Hilde out of his mind.

“No, just some anti-inflammatory. Come on!”

Duo met Quatre and Hilde in front of the dark colored truck they'd `borrowed'. Duo wore a black tank top and jacket with jeans- Quatre wore a red top, blue jeans and a long black duster, and Sally wore a green long sleeved shirt and dark green almost black jacket with jeans, her arm in a sling.

“The others are staying inside. I'd though maybe just us three could go get breakfast,” Quatre smiled. It wasn't completely genuine, strained a little.

We get over people easy. He's trying so hard to stay upbeat, for you…

“That sounds great, Quat,” Duo forced a smile, feeling a little better. Quatre began to say something, but Sally cut him off. “Hey, its Heero,” she said, sounding surprised.

Duo looked behind him- coming down the stairs was the enigmatic werewolf, wearing a white top, faded blue jeans and the leather jacket. Duo looked surprised as Heero stopped next to him.

“Well, it looks like we'll be having some company,” Sally smiled. Heero made no sound.

An hour later found the four walking out of a diner. “I swear, Quat, I really thought that guy was gonna jump me! I didn't knee him in the crotch just because I wanted to!” Duo exclaimed.

“You're jumpy, Duo. Its ok,” Sally laughed behind her hand. “I feel so embarrassed,” Quatre muttered, but there was a smile on his face.

“Well, what would you have done, Heero?” Duo said, whirling on the werewolf following them quietly. “I do not believe I would've reacted in the same way,” Heero said placidly. “Well, shoot, you're no help at all,” he grumbled.

Sally laughed, leaning against the truck. “We better get back soon,” she said, “Wufei'll be irate if we don't.”

“Man, it'll be so boring in that hotel room! Forget Wu-man for a minute and lets do something!” Duo whined. Quatre smiled. “We can't do anything `fun', Duo, but maybe we could buy something to keep you amused?”

Heero snorted. “That wont be hard,” he said derogatorily. Duo blinked, then grinned. “Easily distracted by bright, shiny objects; that's me!” he laughed. “All right, Q, you're on!”

Later, back at the hotel, the group had convened in Quatre and Trowa's room. Trowa was nowhere to be seen, but they figured he was there somewhere- hiding from the sun. Heero sat on the bed next to the window, staring out at it almost loathingly. Duo was sprawled on the bed next to Heero, legs on the headboard and reading one of the manga books' they'd bought for him. Sally sat at the small table, looking at the TV as Wufei lay on the bed flicking the channel occasionally, Quatre sitting with his back against the headboard. He appeared to be sleeping.

“Injustice,” Wufei growled as he found the channel unsatisfactory and changed it again. Duo wasn't actually reading the manga- he'd been on the same page for nearly a half hour- and was alternating between the TV, spacing off, and staring discreetly at Heero.

“Keep throwing that word around, Fei. One day maybe the TV will conform to your beliefs,” Sally sighed as the channel- the one she'd found interesting- was changed yet again.

Wufei cursed in Chinese at her. “Ouch,” Sally winced mockingly. Duo sighed, finally returning to the manga. `Heh…Ragnarok…Loki's cool,' he thought, shutting the book and looking at Heero. The werewolf continued staring at the window. Duo flopped a little closer. Heero's eyes slid over to him, then back to the window. Duo, annoyed, began tapping his hand on the bed. Heero ignored him still. He began poking at the arm lying next to him.

It took five minutes, but Heero finally grabbed his hand. “Do you want something?” he asked dangerously. Duo, in the face of what one could call death, smiled. “Nope!” he said cheerfully, returning to his observant position lying next to Heero.

Heero growled frustratedly, then got up, ignoring Duo's surprised question and stalked out of the hotel room. “Antisocial, aren't you?” Duo muttered under his breath, then grinned at Wufei who was glaring at him half-heartedly. “Hey, Wuffers!”

Trowa woke slowly from where Sally and Quatre had rushed him into hiding- the bathroom, specifically the shower. `That's definitely going to hurt later,' he thought, stretching the kinks out of his back languidly, like a big cat. He composed himself into the stoic mask he wore by the time he'd reached the door.

He walked out as the last glimmer of light disappeared beneath the hills. He smiled slightly as he took in the scene. Wufei was napping on the bed, Sally curled up almost child-like next to him, holding his arm- the one that held the remote. Quatre, who had probably started the day upright, was lying across the top of the bed, amongst the pillows he'd stolen from the other one. Duo was wrapped around the last pillow on the other bed, legs dangling off the side as he snored softly.

Trowa looked up as a rather ruffled looking Heero plowed through the door, then stopped as none of the others even so much as twitched. Trowa raised his visible eyebrow when Heero looked at him.

“The damn…baka wouldn't leave me alone,” Heero said, looking at Duo. “Even when he's sleeping he's loud,” he said, glaring at the prone form.

“He's not that loud,” Trowa said, looking over as Quatre roused from slumber. The blonde hissed as he felt his back, having slept in an odd position.

“I'm getting old,” he quipped as Trowa walked over and helped him up. You were old about thirty years ago, Trowa told him silently.

Are you insinuating I'm archaic? Quatre thought back, smiling as Trowa laughed shortly. Suddenly, a loud yelp reverberated through the hotel room. They both looked over in time to see a half-awake Duo try to clobber Heero with the pillow. Heero jumped back, a smirk on his face.

“Evil EVIL pillow robber-snatcher!” Duo said much too loudly for a newly awoken person. Quatre smiled widely. “My, Heero, why are we stealing pillows?”

“To keep the baka from smothering himself,” Heero said, though Trowa and Quatre sensed amused waves from the werewolf. Duo abruptly stopped, teetering precariously on the edge of the bed. “Ba-ka? What the hell does that mean?” he asked, rubbing at his eyes as he finally woke up all the way.

“It means, `idiot,' you idiot,” Wufei growled as he extricated his arm and the remote from Sally's grasp. Duo laughed. “Oh, really. What was I doing?…Oh yeah. DIE!” he threw the pillow at Heero and the other caught it, stone faced.

Sally sat up, holding an arm to her injured shoulder. She looked pale, a little sickly. “Sally? You don't look to well,” Quatre said, walking over to the female.

“I feel a little sick. My wounds' started bleeding again too,” Sally said, taking away her hand to reveal a slight bloodstain on the front of her shirt.

“Come on,” Quatre said, helping the injured officer up and grabbing some of the bandages on the table. He gently pushed her into the bathroom, shot a look to the four males and then closed the door.

“Ouch, Sally,” Duo said quietly, flopping down on the bed and looking at the bathroom door. The others sat down, Heero on the bed with Duo, Wufei on the other bed and Trowa at the table.

Duo was beginning to get bored and got up to get his manga book when a wave of nausea overwhelmed him, forcing him to sit back down. He clutched at his head when his vision got cloudy.

Hello Duo, a calm, smooth voice floated through his mind.

Duo gasped. “Zechs!” he said, causing Heero to jump up. “What? Where?” he growled. As Heero looked wildly about, a chuckle echoed. Do try to speak `normally' Duo, I really don't wish to alarm the others…

Fuck… you, Duo thought angrily.

That doesn't sound very nice, my little fiend.

Duo sat up, eyes blazing angrily. He didn't notice; the others did, that his eyes had taken on a glow. Fiend?! If anyone's a fiend here it's you! Sekra and Hilde have both died because of you and your stupid werewolf army!

I am truly sorry for the deaths of your friends, Zechs sent, and for a second Duo thought he was sincere before he shook off the feeling. Screw you and your little mind games, Peacecraft! I want you to leave us alone!

I wish I could, my Key, but your light is needed for my plan to execute.

Why the hell does everyone keep calling me `Light'? Don't answer that! Like I said, leave us the hell alone!

I cant. I'm sorry but you had your chance, Zechs thought before breaking the connection. He sent a mental wave at Duo before he did though, knocking the breath out of the braided boy.

“Duo! What the hell?” Heero leaned over the slouched boy. Duo gasped, shooting up and missing knocking his head into Heero's by centimeters.

“That was Zechs! He was talking to me through the bond!” Duo said, shaking slightly. Immediately, Trowa was up and in front of Duo. “What did he say?”

“He told me he needed me, and I told him to fuck off and leave us alone. Then he said I `had my chance' and…left,” Duo said, rubbing his forehead. Moments after, Quatre peered out from the bathroom.

“Duo, you were letting off strange waves. Are you ok?”

“Zechs just contacted him,” Heero said. Quatre grimaced, coming out and closing the door behind him. His sleeves were rolled up to the elbow, and looked as though he'd just washed his hands and arms.

“That's just great. On top of Sally we have to worry about Zechs, too,” he mumbled. “What's wrong with Sally?” Duo asked, looking at the blonde. Quatre turned, sighing. “I'm pretty sure Sally isn't going to die,” he said. “Duo, when humans are injured like Sally was by werewolves, one of three things is going to happen. Nothing is the first one. The second is they might contract the lycanthropy diseases and die, but the third is contracting lycanthropy, and become a werewolf. The next full moon is in five days, and it seems like Sally might become a werewolf,” he said.

“…Oh,” Duo said. “Is the transformation…painful?” he ventured.

“Yes,” Both Wufei and Heero said. Duo groaned, flopping back on the bed. “Is she awake?”

“No. She passed out,” Quatre said, and Wufei got up. At the others quizzical glances, he said, “I'm going to watch over her,” and went into the bathroom.

“He worries about her so much. I wish he would just admit it,” Quatre said, looking at the door.

“It's a fact, Quatre. All straight men are pig-headed,” Duo said, staring at the ceiling. Quatre smiled, humor sparkling in his eyes. “I'd like to see you say that to Wufei. He'd rip you to shreds,” he laughed.

Sally woke up later that evening, and they told her what had happened. “Does this mean we have to move again?” Duo asked.

“I guess so. Zechs might know where we are, and when I turn-“

If,” Wufei interrupted. Sally shook her head grimly and continued, “IF I turn, we can't afford to be in a populated area like Sonne.”

“So we go to the cabin,” Trowa said. “What the hell is `the cabin'? Sounds like a horror flick site,” Duo said.

“There's a house we keep in the woods that we visit once in a while. We use it purely for the purpose of monitoring turning werewolves. Heero and Wufei have both turned there,” Quatre said. Duo looked amused. “So we'll leave tomorrow, because it'll take awhile to get there,” Quatre said. Duo nodded, rolling off the bed and standing up as he did.

“Well, since the night is still young, I'm gonna go talk to Heero,” he said, opening the door to go to the werewolf looking out from the hallway.

Heero looked over at him, eyes calculating, and then turned back to the dark night. “What is it?” he asked roughly.

Duo leaned against the railing, considerably more relaxed then the other. “I wanted to talk. Y'now, you're the only one who hasn't opened up,” Duo said, looking at him intently.

“'Opening up' doesn't matter. The only thing that matters…” Heero trailed off, grimly silent.

“What's the only thing that matters?” Duo asked, shifting so he was facing Heero. “The only thing that matters is killing Zechs.”

“What happens after you do that?” Duo pressed. `Assuming you DO do that,' he added mentally.

“I don't plan to survive that battle. The odds aren't in my favor,” Heero said, stone cold.
“So you plan to die? That's bogus! That's-“

“Not fair,” Heero finished for him, looking over at him. “Nothing in life is fair. Haven't you learned that?” he asked, voice cynical.

Duo found himself at a loss for words, staring at Heero for a few moments before shaking his head sadly. “Life may not be fair…” he said, looking down at the cracked cement, “But I wish it were. I plan to fight for that.”

“Plan?” Heero turned to face Duo. “You plan on doing something else first?”

“Zechs has to pay- for what he did to Sekra and Hilde,” Duo said darkly, looking at Heero. “I don't care what you do- well, I do, but I want to stop him too. I don't plan on dying, though,” he finished quietly.

Heero snorted, looking back at the dark night sky. “Do what you want, Duo.”

“My, such lovely sentiments,” a mocking voice said. Duo and Heero whirled around to find a familiar blonde haired figure at the end of the dark walkway. There was a slightly shorter, female figure beside him.

“Zechs!” Duo growled at the same time of Heero's surprised voicing of “Relena!”

Zechs grinned, a dark, dangerous smirk. He walked forward, the harsh outside light exposing him. “My dear sister has persuaded me to try one last time. Please, my dear Duo, you have to come with me.”

“Like hell I will!” Duo growled, banging a fist against the window. This served two purposes, to show his anger, and attract the others inside.

“Its so very sad that we have to do this, then,” Relena's falsetto mocked them, and Duo swore he could see her smirk in the half light.

“Duo, what the-Relena!” Quatre exclaimed, as Trowa, and Sally, leaning on Wufei, joined them outside.

“Enough of you intact to fight. But how in such a small space?” Zechs seemed to ask no one, but then suddenly low growls were being heard, that Duo quickly identified as werewolves.

“Ground floor,” Trowa demanded more than suggested, and Duo felt an arm wrap around his waist before Heero launched them off the second floor hallway.

To Duo's ever-increasing amazement, they landed feet first, Quatre, Trowa, Wufei and Sally landing unharmed as well. “Get out of here,” Heero growled to the others, flinging off his jacket as he looked up at the werewolves that were beginning to follow.

“Like hell we are! Quatre, we are not leaving another person behind!” Duo immediately snapped, first at Heero then at Quatre, who nodded. Trowa produced a shotgun form his trench coat.

Duo looked at Quatre as Heero tore off his shirt, presumably if they didn't have time to get back to the hotel room. He bet the pants were next. “I know. Weapons. Wufei, Sally, get the car!” Quatre shouted at the two. Sally nodded and leaned off Wufei, and though a little unsteadily, began to dash towards the car.

Duo spared a quick glance at Heero when he heard the rumbling growl, looking at the dark brown werewolf who was on all fours, daring the others to come closer. His ears were laid back, and his hackles rose slightly.

Duo backed up against Quatre as the squealing of tires indicated Sally and Wufei had found the truck. At the exact moment, Heero jumped at one of the other werewolves, and the one going for the other three was shot dead in the shoulder, causing it to yelp.

“Thanks!” Duo yelled to the two in the truck before he and Quatre reached the back. The blond threw back the black tarp covering the array of weapons they had. He immediately grabbed the shotgun he'd head the first night Duo'd met him.

Duo looked at the assortment, then stopped. “Quat,” he asked, pulling on the empath's sleeve, who was about to help Trowa, “What the hell is that?”

Quatre looked at the handheld weapon Duo was pointing at, and blinked. “It's a scythe,” he said. [1]

“Yeah. What's it doing in there?”

“Hilde had it- said it was something from her former life. She's kept it in pretty good shape,” Quatre said, and watched Duo's face light up in what one could only call a sadistic grin, and the reached in for it. “Duo, do you even know how to use that thing?”

“Kinda,” Duo said absently, slicing the air with the three-foot high tool. “This is neat! Like the God of Death, yeah?”

“Whatever- lets go!” Quatre said, turning to the battle. There were three werewolves on the ground, Heero was tearing into another, and Trowa was dodging the swipe of another. Zechs and Relena stood in front of the hotel room, and there appeared to be about ten more.

Duo whirled in time to block the rushing claws of a reddish werewolf, sending sparks along the length of the metal staff holding the blade of the scythe. `Nice, Hilde,' he thought as he pushed back, raising the weapon awkwardly and bringing it down on the wolf.

The angle was odd, and so he completely sliced through the creatures left arm. It howled in pain, and Duo hastened to silence it by severing its head. As the body slumped, he looked at the blade dripping blood and the spray of the crimson liquid on his arm, and laughed slightly. `I can see why Hilde would like this,' he thought, gripping the weapon and turning to the next werewolf.

Zechs frowned as they eliminated his comrades with ease. “Oh, this is horrible! I hate these damn bloody battles! And that Key-boy is making such a mess!” Relena said unhappily form her vanture point next to him.

“He's quite a resilient fighter, though,” Zechs said thoughtfully. “They all are. They would've been wonderful allies,” he finished.

As Trowa and Quatre felled the last werewolf, Heero growled, beginning to stalk towards Zechs and Relena.

“Heero!” Duo said, placing himself in front of the wolf. He glared at Duo, laying his ears back. “Heero, I know you want revenge, but now is not the time and place. There are more of them waiting… I know. They'll be here soon,” Duo said. The werewolf looked him over once, then made a growl/snort and began stalking towards his fallen clothes.

Duo began heading for the truck, not looking at Heero as the boy turned back and began to put his clothes back on. `Relena will probably enjoy that,' he thought sourly.

My Key, you do sound jealous.

Duo turned and gave the smirking blonde werewolf the finger.

[1] “Quat, what is that?”

“It's a scythe.”

I had to… I just had to! The God of Death, baby!
