A/N: true to my word, this is only going to have Heero in it for the first scene and then we're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of oz...no I'm just kidding. Then we're going to go on this mission type thing...::nods:: this ought to be fun hehe
BTW...i reposted this chapter 'cause I realized that I screwed up somewhere *nods* but don't worry, you shouldn't have to reread this chapter if you don't wanna, it wasn't a big change....
Chapter Seventeen: The Misson Part One
Wufei shifted in his bed for the tenth time that night. He opened his eyes and tried to stare into the darkness to no avail. He couldn't sleep at all. He had gone to bed after making some amends with Heero but they just didn't feel right at all. He didn't want to go away with such an emptiness inside of him. He felt bad about always putting Heero in what seemed to be the middle but at the same time, he couldn't help it. He didn't mean to always snap at Duo but he was always there and always doing something irritable.
Wufei pushed the covers away and sat up straight, his legs now hanging over the side of the bed. Wufei looked up at the ceiling for a second, as if the answer was hidden in the wood. Wufei shook his head at himself and got up and headed over to the door, he would go and talk to Heero and hopefully mend whatever was wrong before they were separated for a long period of time. When troubles hung over your head, Wufei had long ago learned, the worst enemy you have is time itself.
Wufei opened his door as quietly as he could and padded over to Heero's. Wufei was sure that Heero would wake up the second that he opened the door so he wasn't that worried he would surprised Heero by climbing into bed with him. Plus that would make it easier to talk to Heero if Heero was already was already awake.
Wufei pushed the door open softly and tiptoed inside and then froze as he looked at the scene on the bed. Heero and Duo were sleeping together, Duo's head tucked protectively in the space between Heero's shoulder and Heero's neck. Wufei took a deep breath and began to slowly creep backwards out of the room trying to be quiet enough that Heero wouldn't wake up and wouldn't see him.
But it didn't work because suddenly Heero's eyes opened and they turned and focused in on Wufei. Heero sat up abruptedly, pushing Duo to one side which made Duo wake up and look around quickly for what had happened. When he saw Wufei his eyes opened up in surprise and he scrambled away from Heero so quickly that he fell off the bed and onto the floor.
Wufei froze, unable to move at all. His legs were numb as he realized that he had been caught coming into Heero's room for comfort, or what he presumed they both thought was comfort. Perhaps what Wufei only hoped they both thought was comfort.
Heero was the first one to talk, he turned to Duo and looked at him patiently before opening his mouth. "Duo, go and crawl in bed with Quatre and Trowa. Quatre will understand if you tell him why you're afraid to be alone tonight. Trowa will understand as well I'm sure but if he doesn't, Quatre will explain it to him." Heero took in a deep breath and then turned back to Wufei. "Wufei, you come here." Heero patted the bed next to him.
Both Wufei and Duo nodded and if Wufei had been able to smile at that moment he would have due to the fact that both of them nodded at the exact same instant and in the exact same way. As if they were both robots, doing what Heero had commanded them to do.
Duo got up, untangled himself from Heero's bedclothes and scrambled out of the room, heading down the hall to the room that Quatre and Trowa shared when they were here. Which left Heero all alone with Wufei and Wufei the same with Heero.
And then there was a silence before Heero shifted back down to lie on his side and yawned. "Well are you coming to join me or should I just go back to sleep?" Heero smiled at Wufei and Wufei found himself moving to the bed and then sliding inside of it.
"I didn't know that Duo was in here." Wufei said softly, not wanting Heero to think that he had come in here just to bother the two of them because they were sleeping in the same bed, together. "I just-"
"I know." Heero murmured, pulling Wufei closer to him and breathing in the scent of Wufei's shampoo. "He just had a bad dream and well-" Heero sighed and laid his head on Wufei's shoulder. "I guess I kind of felt like I had to comfort him."
"Why?"
Heero looked up at Wufei, confused by the question and then slumped back down on the pillow. Wufei realized that he had probably just crossed a line but didn't care. He had to know the answer to this question. Why did Heero feel so responsible for Duo all the time? Heero groaned and flipped over suddenly, staring at the ceiling and Wufei listened to the silence, waiting for an answer.
"Because he acts like such a child sometimes and I don't know-" Heero sighed. "Everyone that Duo has ever come close to has died. This Solo of his from when he was a kid, his adopted parents Helen and Father Maxwell." Heero paused for a minute and Wufei didn't say anything, afraid that Heero might realize what he was saying. "I guess I want to break the pattern for him, make him live a better life. Let him live a better life."
"It's not your responsibility."
"I know." Heero admitted. "But sometimes you make things your responsibility without realizing it."
Wufei nodded, though he didn't really understand but let it go. Wufei kissed Heero and then turned to bury his head in Heero's chest, neither of them said a word for the rest of the night.
----lalalala-----lalalala----lalalala-----lalalala----la lalala-----lalalala----lalalala-----lalalala
"Where's Heero? I figured he'd come to wish us good luck or something." Duo said as he packed the trunk with his stuff, trying to fit both what Wufei had packed and what Duo had brought along without squishing anything or breaking something. "Did you guys have a fight last night or something?"
"No." Wufei answered simply. "And even if we did, it's none of your business. Heero will live without you going to comfort him and besides, we did NOT have a fight."
"Right." Duo slammed the trunk shut and pulled out the keys. "Which reminds me, which one of us can drive again?"
"Me." Wufei snapped, snatching the keys from Duo. "You have five minutes because I am leaving at exactly nine o'clock Maxwell." With that Wufei went over to the car and opened the door, climbing in.
Duo stuck his tongue out at Wufei and then turned to run inside the house, intent on finding Heero to say goodbye to him before they had to leave. After all, they weren't allowed to contact anyone from this 'life' while they were undercover, simply to make sure that no one realized that they weren't who they said they were. Duo didn't see the point in it, wouldn't people think it was more suspicious that they never made any phone calls? Duo wasn't about to bring that up though, who knows, Wufei might go on a rampage again.
"Heero?" Duo called through the house and didn't receive an answer. Which meant one of two things. He was either on the computer or he wasn't in the house. Duo raced to check the computer room and when he found it empty, he sighed. He had two minutes left and there was no way that he would get to the dogs and back again before time was up and still say goodbye to Heero in the process. Duo sighed and slowly walked back to the car.
He opened the door, and exited it, only to find Heero standing on the driver side of the car, about three centimeters from Wufei, who was pressed up against the door of the car by Heero.. Duo huffed and looked away. Just because he knew that Heero and Wufei were going out didn't mean that he had to like that Wufei and Heero were going out. And as long as he didn't have to look at it, he could pretend that they weren't going out which would make this mission just that much easier to get through.
Duo looked at his watch. It was nine o'clock. That meant that they were going. Duo raced to the car and pounded on the top of the roof. "Come on Wufei, it's time to go." Duo flashed a smile at Heero and waved. "We'll see you soon Heero. Don't get too lonely without us."
"I won't." Heero said, tilting his head towards the two of them and then walked back in the house.
Duo watched him go and then got into the car. "So I guess that you found Heero, huh?" Duo put his seat belt on and then stared down at the ground of the seat before simply changing the subject so that, hopefully they didn't pull into their new apartment yelling and screaming. "Do you want to listen to this CD or this one?" Duo held up two different CD's.
Wufei started up the car and then looked over at the choice briefly. "The one on the left." He replied, pulling on his own seat belt. "I always did prefer listening to music rather than screaming."
Duo glared at that comment and then popped in the chosen CD. Instantly a guitar started playing. Duo sat back in his seat and stared out the window while moving slightly to the beat.
Wufei pulled out of the driveway, adjusted his mirror and then looked over at Duo. "And for your information, Heero came here looking for us. He wanted to say goodbye to both of us but you were already gone looking for him and I didn't know where you went."
"Sure, whatever.' Duo said, uncommited.
"We're supposed to be best friends, right?" Wufei asked.
"According to the debriefing file we are." Duo answered coldly, still not looking over at Wufei. He made sure that it was obvious to Wufei that their mission made them best friends, not anything else at the moment.
"Well then maybe we should act like it." Wufei suggested. "I mean it shouldn't be too hard for you to be able to act like you like me, I mean we did have you acting like my girlfriend once."
"It was boyfriend since our neighbor figured out that I was a guy in about ten minutes." Duo reminded him. "In case you don't remember."
"Whatever." Wufei growled. "Do you have to make this so hard? I'm suggesting a truce while we're on this mission and you're shooting the whole thing down. I'm beginning to think that you will do anything in your power to make Heero and I break up."
"Not true." Duo turned his head to glared at Wufei. "I don't care anymore if you two break up. Just stop rubbing it in my face that you have him and I don't."
"You seem to have him more than I do." Wufei retorted.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Every time you look even the slightly bit upset, Heero runs to you, trying to make sure that you are okay and you love it! You love that if I'm upset, Heero doesn't know what to do but when you're upset he runs to you to hold you, hug you, watch movies with you, whatever. You love the attention and you bask in it." The car began to speed up. "You know that he does that too and so you're using it now. Just like you used it last night. You went to his bed and he let you climb in there because he doesn't see what a fool you're playing him for."
"I am NOT playing Heero for a fool!" Duo exclaimed, his eyes darker than usual. "I was genuinely upset!"
"Then why didn't you run to Quatre? Quatre knows better what to do to make someone feel better." Wufei countered. "So why do you always run to Heero instead of Quatre? Or Trowa?"
"Because Heero does it without a second thought." Duo said softly. "Quatre may be able to figure it out, but it's not instinctive like it is for Heero. Heero had done it so many times he knows what I need in order to be okay. Quatre doesn't."
"So?" Wufei shrugged. "He's not single anymore, you can't just run to his bed whenever you feel lonely."
"I don't run to his bed!" Duo growled. "I run to him. I'm not trying to get in his pants Wufei!"
"Well you could have fooled me." Wufei snapped.
Duo shook his head. "You just don't like the fact that Heero has me and that he does want to comfort me and he just can't with you."
"I just don't like the fact that my boyfriend thinks that you aren't going to be able to survive on your own and therefore believes that you need him to comfort you like that." Wufei yelled.
Duo's face fell and he turned to look out the window. The next thirty minutes were ridden in a deafening silence before Wufei spoke again.
"Lets not talk about Heero anymore."
No response.
"It's obvious that Heero makes us both get riled up because we both view Heero's relationship with the other person in a negative way. So lets just concentrate on the mission and forget that Heero even exists." Wufei waited for a reply but didn't get one and started to seethe again. "All right?!?"
"Yeah." Duo replied but still didn't look over at Wufei, instead he pointed to a rest stop sign. "Can we stop? I have to go to the bathroom."
Wufei merely grunted and in three minutes they were stopped at a gas station and Duo ran to the bathroom to take a leak. Wufei refilled the gas and then went to look around the place. He came across a small pond and picked up a rock, chucking it into the still, unforgiving water. He did that for a little while before he heard someone come up behind him.
"It's just me." Duo called out softly and then came to stand beside Wufei.
Wufei just nodded and threw another rock. This one skipped twice before sinking to the bottom of the lake. Duo picked up a rock too and threw it randomly at the lake, it just skidding against the surface of the water. They stood there silently for a moment and then Duo cleared his throat.
"Heero really does like you." Duo said. "I don't think that anything I do would change that. So don't worry about it."
"Hn."
"And I guess I haven't been the easiest person to live with lately."
"Hn."
"But neither have you. You don't make it easy for me either. You rub it in my face a lot too and you snap easier than I do. I told Heero when he tripped in that hole, that I wouldn't pick a fight with you and would only fight if you started it and it lasted about half a day. So you have to admit that it may not all be my fault, ya know."
"Hn."
"Stop it! You're sounding like Heero."
Wufei turned and looked at Duo. "Well then you should be happy." With that Wufei headed to the car.
Duo growled and jogged to catch up with Wufei. "Do you have to be so difficult? I'm trying to make this easier for the both of us, after all we have to fit in at this new place if we're going to bust the operation. And we aren't going to fit in, fighting all the time." Duo pointed out. "So why don't you just chill it for once and stop trying to make this harder on the both of us."
"Whose trying to make it harder on the both of us?" Wufei snapped, opening the car door and climbing in. "If you ask me, you're the one making this difficult. One minute you're crying wolf and hugging onto Heero's shoulder, grinning like you just won the gold and the next second you're acting like everything's fine between us. Well it's not so just figure out what in the hell is going on with you and then tell me." Wufei reached over and turned up the volume to the stereo and pulled out of the parking lot, leaving Duo sitting in the passenger seat with only his thoughts to truly keep him company.
----lalalala-----lalalala----lalalala-----lalalala---- lalalala-----lalalala----lalalala-----lalalala
Duo unloaded the car while Wufei talked to the landlord. Duo picked up a couple of boxes from where he had dumped them next to the car and then carried them inside. A quick look around told Duo that this wasn't that horrible of place to stay, they had been in way worse during the war, but it wasn't the best place ever. Duo made a note to go and check the roof for leaks when he got a minute or two. It definitely looked like one of those places that people run around with pots and pans every time it rained.
"Well then, I'll just leave you two alone to unpack." Duo heard the landlady say as he came back outside for more boxes.
Wufei waved to the girl and then picked up three boxes, heading for the house without even a word to Duo. Duo growled but didn't say anything and picked up the remaining boxes and headed inside.
Wufei was looking around the house with an appraising look and didn't seem too happy with what he saw. Obviously Wufei had realized that this wasn't the greatest house either but Duo didn't think that he would be that emotional about it.
Wufei turned to Duo and sighed. "We're going to have to start repairing this house now."
Duo nodded and smiled. "All right then, I'll go outside and work on the roof."
Wufei shrugged indifferently. "I don't care what you fix first just get the roof done as soon as possible. It looks like we're going to have more problems with this house than the land-lord said we were going to." Wufei began to mutter under his breath about how under-informed he had been and then walked upstairs.
Duo watched him go and then turned to go to the garage to see if they had a ladder. They didn't. Duo rolled his eyes, that meant that he was going to have to get up on that roof the hard way, without any assistance from anything, like a ladder, at all.
Duo grabbed some tools and a couple pieces of scrap wood to use if the cracks in the roof were too big and then re-entered the house.
Duo yelled out at Wufei that he was going to be going on the roof now and then walked outside. He saw a way to climb up and did so quickly. Someone on the road saw him and called out to him to ask if he was suicidal but Duo ignored that, it wasn't something you were supposed to reply to anyways, and went about fixing the roof.
About forty-five minutes later Wufei called for him to come and see something and Duo looked around. Now that he had gotten up on the roof, how exactly was he supposed to get down. He would use the same way he got up except for the fact that he had to hoist himself up about three feet when the roof finally dipped over his head. Which meant that getting back there was going to be pretty hard if not impossible.
Wufei yelled again and Duo sighed, sitting down on the roof. There wasn't going to be a way of getting around telling Wufei that he had gotten himself stuck on the roof so he might as well just tell him now. Who knows, maybe Wufei wouldn't laugh at him.
Fat chance of that happening!
Duo grumbled and looked around again. There was no way down without jumping and possibly breaking his leg judging by the fact that this was a two-story house and there was also an attic. There was nothing Duo could do but tell Wufei had he had done...
"Tai! I'm kinda stuck up here!" Duo called out, using Wufei's fake name, hoping that Wufei would reply to it.
Thankfully he did and within a minute Wufei was out of the house, looking up at Duo from the ground. "Where the hell is the ladder then? You should really be more careful. If you're going to go up there than the least you can do is not kick the ladder down. You know that I have things to be doing instead of chasing after you." Wufei waited a minute and when Duo didn't reply, he sighed. "Where is the ladder?"
"There is no ladder." Duo called down.
Wufei's whole body slumped and Duo realized that he was definitely going to get ragged about this, so Duo sat down and waited for the insults to come and was surprised when nothing happened.
Wufei was looking around and then waved up at Duo. "Can you stay up there for about twenty minutes or so? I'll go and buy us a ladder since no one seems to be home right now."
Duo nodded and pulled his knees up to his chest and started to slowly rock back and forth. This was one of the stupidest things that he had ever gotten himself into before in his life. What had he been thinking?
"Oh and Duo?" Wufei called as he started the car. "Don't beat yourself up about it while I'm gone." With that Wufei drove out of the driveway and down the street.
Duo sat like that for about two minutes and then realized that while he was up here he might as well finish the repairs for the roof. It was't like Wufei was going to come back faster if he was just sitting there waiting for him.
Duo quickly finished fixing the roof and before he knew what was going on Wufei was standing next to him. "Come on down now. The roof seems to be done and if it's not there won't be many leaks left anyways."
Duo nodded and followed Wufei down the newly bought ladder, which Wufei had set against the garage, the lowest part of the roof. Duo hung his head in shame as he followed Wufei into the house. No doubt he was going to get it now.
But still nothing came from Wufei's mouth, no insult for being stupid enough to get himself stuck up there. No ridiculing for not checking to make sure there was a way down. Nothing. Duo actually looked at Wufei hard to make sure that he wasn't ill or something.
"Anyways, I wanted to show you something before I had to go and get you down." Wufei said as he led Wufei up the stairs. "There's a bunch of computer stuff from the last people here, which Une says were also agents so that's cool. But anyways, they're secure and no one should know that they're here so we're capable of contacting Yuy through the computers."
Duo sighed. He should have known that the first thing that Wufei discovered was a way to talk to his boyfriend.
"How about we don't." Duo suggested as he looked down at the computers.
"Hm?" Wufei was confused and it showed as he looked over at Duo.
"You suggested that we just pretend that Heero doesn't exist, right?" Duo asked in a small voice. When Wufei nodded he continued. "Well then we will. It's not worth the mission just to talk to Heero about things. You know, we should just use this time to figure out a way to get along. After all, Heero seems to be getting stressed about all of this too."
"Alright then we'll pretend that Heero no longer exists." Wufei replied curtly. "On one condition."
"What?"
"You acknowledge that he is my boyfriend and nothing that you do is going to change that."
"I know." Duo looked down at the ground. "But this isn't going to last for longer than the mission."
Wufei nodded and wrapped his arm around Duo's neck. "I think that we need to go and get some ice cream." Wufei glared at Duo. "By the way, don't ever try to go on that roof again without a ladder."
Duo smiled and nodded. "I won't."
"Good." Wufei grabbed Duo's hat and pulled it down over his face. "Then I won't have to worry about that anymore. Have you taken a look at your classes yet?"
"Yeah." Duo grumbled, pushing his hat back up with his thumb. "I have the worst classes in the world." He said as he walked out the door. He looked around and noticed the odd neighbor listening in. That was Wufei's game, huh? "How come I got stuck in all of the hard classes?"
"Because you're dumb and forgot to pick your courses right." Wufei replied, slipping into the car while Duo got in the other side. Duo made a note that the second he got home he was going to drive that car as much as possible to make up for this whole time of not being able to drive.
When they drived away, Duo turned to Wufei. "Do you think they're just nosey or is there something more going on there?"
Wufei shrugged. "I don't know. It would make sense for them to just be nosey but then again, they might be spies set in on us. We don't know. So until we do, just play it safe and keep in character. Remeber, you're supposed to be my best amigo."
"Are we gay?" Duo asked suddenly.
"I don't know, why?" Wufei asked, shooting a quick look over to Duo.
"Because if we aren't, then we're going to have to keep it on the low about you having a boyfriend and me wanting him." Duo commented. "Not to mention that we're supposed to be best friends and I think that having a guy between you really does ruin your friendships."
Wufei rolled his eyes. "I thought Heero didn't exist."
Duo grinned his trademark smile and winked. "Oops, sorry I forgot. But you have to admit that it is true. After all, why do you think most girls back down when they realize a fellow person has a crush on the same person as they do."
"Maybe they're just smarter than we are."
"Maybe." The car went silent for a moment and then Duo looked up at Wufei again. "How come we keep on making deals and then breaking them. You think that we could be more productive in this since we were gundam pilots."
"I guess love really does make you blind." Wufei commented.
"Yeah, I guess so."
But Duo found himself looking out the window of the car and wondering what the truth was.
----lalalala-----lalalala----lalalala-----lalalala----lalalala-- ---lalalala----lalalala-----lalalala
Duo looked down the hallway and back up at the door that he was standing in front of. It looked to be the right room according to his schedule but Duo had learned in other missions that schedules were likely to be faulted and it was about a fifty-fifty chance that the room he was about to go in was the wrong one and he was going to look stupid in the first class of the day.
That always bugged him because once you look stupid it's hard to convince someone that there's anything more to you than that. Which meant that he wouldn't fit in and if you don't fit in, you stick out and there's nothing worse to an undercover preventer than that.
Duo took a deep breath and opened the door, stepping into the classroom. He took a look at the board and was pleased to note that it did say the right subject and Duo walked to the back of the classroom to sit down.
A couple of girls turned around to look at him and winked. Duo pretended not to see them so that he didn't have to give a reaction. There's no way of knowing until afterwards whether or not you're getting involved with the 'easy ones' and Duo didn't want to get a reputation for going after the easy ones, not this early on at least.
More students filed in the room, sitting down in random spots, keeping a seat between them and people that they didn't know. Duo sighed, this was going to be a hard class to make friends in. Duo looked around and noticed that everyone seemed to have someone to talk to in the class which meant that there would be no other loners to bond with or talk to. That was a bad sign. (1)
The professer walked in and coughed, everyone turned to the front slowly, though it took a couple more coughs to get a few of them to pay attention. Duo shrugged, he just hoped that this class went by quickly so that he could get out of here as fast as possible.
The professer started to talk about the things that he was going to teach us in this course and so on. Duo took one of the hand-outs that were going around that gave a basic overlook of the course. Duo glanced at it quickly but paid no other attention to it for the rest of the class.
When the professer finally stopped droning on, Duo looked around again and noticed a bunch of bubbly girls in the front that were hanging around with a couple of guys. They seemed to be fairly comfortable with each other but one of them was glancing around, obviously bored with the conversation at hand. She looked up and saw Duo staring at her, she frowned and Duo quickly looked away. He didn't want to be assumed as a 'watcher' either.
The next thing he knew there was the girl was next to him with a smile on her face. "Hiya, my name's Kyra. It's nice to meet you."
"Robert." Duo introduced himself in turn and smiled pleasantly back at her.
Kyra motioned to the people that she had just walked away from. "Those are friends of mine but they won't notice that I'm gone until they have to ask someone some intelligent question."
Duo laughed. "I see."
Kyra rolled her eyes. "It's not that they're not smart or anything, it's just that they're not exactly observant or anything like that, ya know?
Duo nodded to show that he did and then they entered a moment of awkward silence where you're trying to be nice by talking to someone but having no idea what to talk about exactly.
Kyra shrugged finally and sat down. "So Robert, you don't happen to know that new Asian guy, would you?"
"Yeah, he's like my best friend." Duo said, almost forcing himself to say the words. Wufei and him and been everything but best friends since Wufei had gotten together with Heero so those words didn't come naturally anymore.
"You should introduce us." Kyra said with a wink. "I've always had a thing for Asian guys." Kyra sighed. "He doesn't have a girlfriend or something back home, does he?"
Duo thought for a second. What should he say? Technically Wufei had Heero back home but they had both agreed to pretending that Heero didn't exist so what should Duo say?
Finally Duo just smiled softly at Kyra. "Well he had a girlfriend but I'm not sure what's going on between the two of them right now. They may have agreed that the distance thing wasn't going to work or not. I don't know, I didn't ask." There, now Wufei could make up the story as he wanted to. Duo would just have to tell Wufei the story before Kyra got to him.
"Oh, that's cool." Kyra said with a nod. "I hope that they broke up. I know that sounds mean and everything but I really would like to go out with him. I'm sure he's a great guy and I know he looks good. It seems like all the good ones are always taken."
Duo nodded. "Yeah they tend to be."
Kyra got up and smiled warmly. "Well I better get back before they realize I'm gone. Talk to you later Robert."
Duo watched her leave. Yeah, all the good ones always tend to be taken.

(1)---that's how I judged my Graphic Design class last month. I didn't know anyone and everyone seemed to already be grouped up but it turned out to not be as bad as I thought...the second day someone I knew came in and I've also made friends with the three of the ninth graders (i'm a year older but eh...)
(A/N: Well I'm sorry about the long wait for the update (ha that rhymed!) I've only been going to school for a month and I've already had four unit tests! Four! And only one of them was supposed to be for review ::sighs:: That is just sooo not fair lolol ...plus school seems to swallow up most of my free time. I've had homework every single night of the week and well weekends are usually my free time, I've been sleeping in because I can't do it any other time so that ruins my time too...so like I said, sorry about the long wait but eh, hopefully it will just get better from here on. Which it better because I have to contribute to my group's RR soon
R&R please and I hope to get the next part out before too long...
