When Duo came to next, the others were looking over him worriedly. He blinked, before slowly sitting up, his wing had been bandaged properly Though the salve used wasn’t exactly what he used on it, and his middle was bandaged, as well as an area that was one of an old break in his tail. “Heero, that injury is at least a decade old, you didn’t have to bandage it as well.” Duo commented, unwrapping it. “It’s properly set, it’s just that it’s going to have a small knot in the bone forever from that incident, is all.”
He looked at Heero with one eye before he sat all the way up. “Thanks though for helping out with the wing. I hate piecing the membrane together with adhesives and salves.” Duo commented. “I’m glad you waited until I was out cold to do it too, that’s the most painful thing to have to fix.”
Heero nodded. “Hai, I figured as much, I could see veins and arteries littering it, not to mention that it’s obviously got to have a ton of nerves to move it properly. Duo nodded to the splint. “Until the ‘glue’ drys?” He questioned.
“Hai.” Heero replied.
Wufei had left and returned with three cups of good tea, before he settled into a chair. “So… Duo, why don’t you explain things a little?”
“Well, this is… The real me, I’ve been like this since when I could remember, and I’m a war orphan as well, so… I never really knew my parents and if I did, it was before I had memories of them, so it seemed pretty obvious as to why I was different, my parents must have been different too.” He started… “It was when I got accepted into the church that I got my first ‘guise’ as it is. It was just a basic, cheep hologram projector that could disguise me as a normal person, a normal being. And it was Howard that invented my next one, as well as my gundam’s cloaking device.” Duo explained. “My hologram is a four dimensional one, it, kind of like the zero system on some small scale manipulates a person’s brain into feeling, thinking, seeing, smelling another unique human being rather than a big furry gargoyle.” Duo commented, truthfully. “Fact is, I’m more of a teddy bear than anything else.”
“And this last year what’s changed?” Heero questioned.
“Well, after the whole one year Eve three day battle, I was discovered shortly after by what I’d describe as a Gargoyle Hunters group. They’re a group that believes that I…. I’m a messenger from hell who’ll attach himself to a dying mortal and drag their soul to hell, in truth, that’s not it at all, really.” Duo commented. “I have… A power of come sort, I have to be within a certain distance of someone to do this and most of the time the person isn’t even dying anymore. I’m oddly drawn to pain, to physical pain of other beings, it’s like I can pick up on it and follow it to it’s source. And when close enough to the being in pain… I absorb it, the pain that they feel, I’ve done it to the dying only a few times, it eases their suffering, allows them a painless passing.”
“And these people haven’t figured it out yet?” Wufei whispered.
“No, and if they have they are too stubborn to see it differently.” Duo commented. “Luckily, that works to my benefit though, since I’m a demon, I shouldn’t be able to withstand the light of the day, yet we all know that’s not true, so like any good warrior I use it to my advantage to rest, to heal, to vanish from their sights for a while.” Duo commented. “They only just tracked me down for the first time last year.”
“Ah, the other wars were distracting them?” Heero wondered.
“Yup, or so it seemed to me, anyway, that’s why I’ve vanished, I figured it’d be better if I did so you guys could get settled in and such… I mean, you’ve seen enough wars…” Duo commented.
“But, Duo, so have you and this isn’t a war it’s a man hunt.” Wufei commented. “In war there’s honor in this…. This is cowardly.”
“Hai, I agree with Wufei.” Heero commented.
“Then…. What are you guys going to do with me?” Duo wondered.
“Hide you here of course.” Heero answered. “You’re smart, I know, you’ve left them at least twenty dead ends to track, by the time they find the real trail it’d of been washed out, it’ll take them a good while to find you, especially if we repair your hologram projector.”
“True….” Duo commented, truthfully, he really didn’t want to know what they’d say to him but, yeah.
“So, what’s going on between you two? Married yet?” He questioned.
Wufei was read in the face, and Heero was lightly blushing, but not as much as good old Fei- Fei. “Um… Hai.” Heero finally responded.
“I- I didn’t interrupt anything did I?” Duo questioned.
The two looked at each other. “No, we had both fallen asleep, Wufei likes reading books out loud with me until I’m a sleep before he goes to sleep as well.” Heero explained.
“It was a method to get him to calm his old habits of waking at the slightest sound.” Wufei commented.
“Ah… I see…” Duo responded.
He carefully stood. “Well sorry to intrude on your lives… But, I really better be making tracks or else they’ll come to find me eventually.” Duo commented.
“But… You aren’t even healed yet!” Heero called out, grabbing the other’s wrist.
“He’s right, Duo, you need to rest and to heal.” Wufei commented.
“But…. I… I really shouldn’t stay.” Duo commented.
“Why?” Wufei questioned. “Why not stay? I mean, they aren’t going to find you that soon anyway, right? And you’ll be safe and you’ll be able to give yourself some time to heal. Really, Maxwell, why not?”
Duo’s frame slumped slightly. “Well… Because unlike humans… I have…. Issues, big issues… One being that even though I can take away other’s pain, I can’t take away my own, I have to endure it. Another being… Instincts. I do things without a reason or a rhyme really sometimes… Like… Catching sunlight in my hands, or… Enjoying it when I have my tummy scratched. Really animal like stuff….” Duo stated.
“And?” Heero waited.
“What?” Duo questioned.
“It has to be much bigger than that to make you want to leave the only safety you’ve had in a year or so…” The ex- pilot explained.
“Well… Yeah, you two are married and…. I go into heat tonight…. Not a good combination.” Duo stated.
“Not a good combination/” Heero whispered the question this time.
He blinked, “What do you mean by this?” Heero questioned.
“Well, in my species, because there’s so few of us…. Males can…. Lay eggs…. Strange I know, but from the one other of my kind that I’ve found I learned a lot from him. Anyway, he told me that humans and our kind can… Interbreed.” Duo commented. “To top it off, our instincts cry out for us to either dominate, or…. To submit and sometimes both.”
He was blushing now. “When I go into heat odd things happen, like I’ll wake up in a sheep field or something and I swear that I didn’t do anything, but still.. It’s hard for me to remember, not until I find my proper mate anyway. Everything’s a blur until I find my proper mate.” Duo commented.
“So… What you’re saying is you #### everything and anything standing on four legs until you find your mate because you go into heat?” Heero questioned.
“Yes.” Duo commented.
“And that you can… Have kids, but, they’re eggs at first?” Wufei continued.
“Well, you admitted something big, we’re going to admit something too… Our love brought us together, we’ll agree on that, but… It was because we loved you that we got married” Wufei commented.
“And I….” Duo started.
“Are goingto go into heat tonight, but I mean… We’re fond enough of each other not to break apart over something like that.” Heero commented.
