Gundam Wing Fan Fiction ❯ How Come I Must Know? ❯ How Come I Must Know? ( One-Shot )
Disclaimer: I don't own Gundam Wing or any of its characters.
Warnings/Genres: 3+1, 1+2, shounen ai, short ficlet, bittersweet, melodramatic
Notes: This was first planned to be a longer oneshot starting off with a conversation between Duo and Heero and ending with one between Trowa and Heero, but I decided that this one scene felt better alone. Besides, it also reflects my own mood right now. I've been ignoring Trowa in most of my fics, and decided to give him a little spotlight in this one.
The title is taken from the song in the beginning of .hack//SIGN; I think it is called `Obsession'.

The soft sounds of footfalls on the velvety carpet made Duo jump and then turn around to see who had gotten so close to him without betraying his presence in the room. "Trowa? What are you doing here? I thought you were on a mission." He asked when he spotted a slightly taller silhouette.
The other boy stepped out of the moon-caused shadows and shrugged faintly. "I came back just now."
"You did?" Duo's surprise lost it most apparent edge as he whispered out the words. "I didn't hear the door."
Trowa shrugged again, saying without words that he didn't have an explanation for that. He stepped up beside Duo in front of the window and joined him in looking out on the moonlit landscape through the window. "What are you doing up?" He asked his friend with the same quiet tone so not to wake any of the other occupants in the house.
A small shrug was his answer, followed only by a quiet, "Couldn't sleep."
Trowa reflected on the words for a moment. Duo was always more quiet during nighttime and didn't seem to feel the need for those unnecessary words he used under the sun. It was almost as if night was Duo's true insignia. Dark. Trowa decided. Duo's true insignia was dark; black or possibly blue.
The longhaired boy let out a soft puff of air and turned towards his friend. "Did the mission go well?"
"Yes." He answered and let his arms fall to reveal his torso, as if to prove that he was unhurt. Duo seemed satisfied with that.
"Good." He paused, hesitating before speaking again. "Heero's waiting upstairs." He muttered, unwillingly.
The green-eyed boy studied him quietly for a moment, taking in Duo's sad expression. "You love him." He stated then, voice clear. Duo nodded.
"I do. But so do you."
Trowa watched him quietly again before letting a sad smile curl his lips slightly upwards. "Thank you for that gift, Duo."
The braided boy sighed and went back to look out of the window, searching for something he couldn't find. He gave up and turned to Trowa, who had moved to stand at the first step of the stairs, hesitating in the flight of steps. "Promise me something?"
"What?"
"That you'll never let him feel lonely."
Trowa hesitated for a second, answer lying ready on his tongue. The promise was hazardous, something that he might not be able to keep, how much he ever wanted to. But if it would make Duo feel better, then he would do it. "I promise."
"Thank you."
And with that, Trowa felt that his presence had lost its welcome and he walked quietly up the stairs to greet his love.
