Gundam Wing Fan Fiction ❯ How Could You? ❯ Chapter 3
[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
~Wufei POV~
This has been too easy. The site is an old military post with minimal security, too minimal. Perhaps it is just paranoia, but it seems as though someone is letting us in. Finding the cell block was ridiculously easy, also. I am reminded of a movie Maxwell made us watch where to reach their destination, all the characters had to do was follow a yellow brick road.
Too convenient by half.
"I don't like it." Heero's voice is soft, pitched not to carry. So it has gotten to him, too.
"I know." I can be frugal with my words also. Despite the situation, I find the slightly irritated look he throws my way amusing.
The only occupied cell is also obvious, mostly because it is the only one with a closed door. No guard, however. Do they not think Maxwell worthy of a guard? He is, after all, a trained terrorist. Or is he already incapacitated?
I push away the uncomfortable twinge that thought produces and focus on covering Yuy as he picks the lock on the door. I cannot help but grin as the older lock causes him some trouble, but I do not allow it to touch my face by the time he looks at me. As the cell door opens, I can tell we are both holding our breath.
~Heero POV~
The cell is gray and lit to a uniform dimness. For a moment, that's all I can see, then one of the shadows moves. "Heero to the rescue. Guess she was right."
His voice is low, muffled, and though he's sitting up, he hasn't stood up.
"Who?" Wufei asks from behind me, still covering the doorway.
"The Witch of Oz, though I'm less sure of which one now."
I look at Wufei and I can tell that Duo isn't making much sense to him either. Another obscure pop culture reference, I suppose. "I'm not going to ask. Let's go."
A faint chuckle comes from Duo. "And you're not even going to offer to shoot me this time. I feel lost." I rush forward and barely manage to stop him from falling as his words change to a groan.
"What happened to you?"
"Torture, of course. Really...you should stop to admire these guy's handiwork, they're artists."
Trust Duo to be cracking jokes even when he's leaning his weight heavily on me.
"Shut up, Maxwell." Wufei motions forward with his free hand. "It's clear, for the moment." His discomfort with the whole situation is clear from his tone.
"It'll stay clear. She arranged it that way. I think she's afraid Queenie might kill me if she kept ahold of me much longer."
"Queenie?" I ask sharply.
"Queenie." Duo confirms softly before passing out on me. I hoist him up on my shoulder with a softly muttered, "Baka."
~Quatre POV~
I jump as the door bangs open. Heero steps in, a dark bundle thrown over his shoulder. It isn't until he sets the bundle down very carefully on the sofa that I realize it's Duo. I immediately leap over to his side, checking for wounds.
"What happened?"
"Someone's been torturing him. He seems to know who it was, but we certainly don't."
I shudder. I hate torture, it's ugly and ultimately pointless. Especially since anything Duo could have told them they already knew, since they'd been able to capture him in the first place. Heero looks for a moment like he's going to say something else, but his gaze strayed to Duo and got caught. I wonder...
The door bangs open again, and I turn to see Wufei. Heero opens his mouth to berate him, but then we both see Relena. Wufei enters the room, his eyes trying to tell us something. As he turns slightly, it becomes obvious. Relena has a gun, a gun pressed closely into Wufei's back.
"Heero... how wonderful to see you." The normal pleasantries come from a mouth stretched ridiculously wide in a smile and in a voice that's far too singsong. The look in her eyes is crazed also. Relena's gone insane. Despite my distaste, I reach out to touch her feelings. I need to know why, if we're going to try and fix this.
"Relena." Heero acknowledges her. Keep her busy, Heero, keep her talking. I'm afraid of what I'm sensing, I'm afraid of what she might do, what she's capable of now.
"I've been waiting for you to come and pay a return visit, but it appears I missed you." Her eyes settle on Duo and her face forms into a sneer. "It isn't terribly polite to borrow other people's toys, you know, Heero."
I hear Wufei gasp quietly, "Queenie...of course."
Relena did this to Duo? More like ordered it done, I think, but still... Relena?
~Duo POV~
I slowly come to and almost wish I hadn't. I can hear voices, tense voices, the way people speak when they've been pushed too far. I open my eyes partly and see the straight back of Heero, and a glimpse of pink beyond him. Relena. That bitch. I feel Quatre tense beside me. I hadn't even realized he was there.
Letting my head roll slightly to one side, I can see Relena clearly. And she's obviously still crazy because she's holding a gun on the Perfect Soldier. The girl's seriously lost it.
My hearing finally tunes in completely.
"...just won't be mine." Relena's voice screeches out. Doesn't help my headache in the least. Queenie needs to shut up.
"I'm never going to be yours." Heero's level voice responds. Oooh, she's definitely not going to like that one. Heero moves a few steps to the side. I wonder why until I realize he's moving so that if she shoots at him, it won't accidentally hit me. Thanks partner, but you're not going solo on this one.
"Oh, yes, yes you will...or you'll be nobody's."
I feel discretely under the cushions and find the gun I knew was there. Heero has a knack of squirreling the damn things away everywhere, which normally makes me nervous, but this time, I'm thankful. The heavy fabric of the cushion allows me to cock the gun and thumb off the safety without drawing anyone's attention, even Quatre's.
Relena moves her finger to fire, and the shot rings out.
Everyone jumps as Relena falls to the ground, a shocked look on her face as red blossoms on her shoulder.
"No one threatens my partner." My voice is so hoarse it comes out as a growl, but I can't help that.
The others are all looking at me, and the only one who doesn't seem surprised is Heero. He just looks at me and smirks slightly, "Thanks Duo."
"You're welcome." I let the gun drop from my fingers as the blackness takes over me again. Everything's going to be fine.
~Trowa POV~
Things have been rather quiet since the 'incident.' That's a pleasant thing, really. There are so few times that we, as gundam pilots, get to relax. And this is one time when we really need it.
Duo's doing a lot better. Heero and Wufei have monopolized care of him. It's actually kind of funny watching them compete for Duo's attention, though I think Wufei's the only one who's concious of what's going on. Wufei is being quietly protective and supporting, while trying not to be too obvious. Heero is trying to figure out why he's so concerned...both for Duo and about Wufei.
And as for Duo...there's this wicked little glint in his eyes. When I asked Quatre if we should warn them, he just giggled. Should be interesting to watch though.
Relena is also doing better. Quatre insisted that we take her to a hospital. Heero and Wufei both resisted, but I managed a compromise and took her to Sally. Relena was unconcious for several days after her surgery. When she woke up, it was clear she didn't remember anything. Sally says it's actually a mercy that Relena doesn't remember her 'delusional state'. We're all agreed that when in her right mind, Relena would never forgive herself.
But having seen the look in the eyes of Wufei...and Heero, I'm not sure if either of them will ever forgive her.
~Owari~
Okay, before anybody asks, there is a sequel planned to this, I just don't know when I'll get there. *wondering when she'll write something without leaving enough loose ends to write a novel*
