In The Darkness
Chapter 6
What she saw was two boys she almost didn't recognize but knew who they were. The shorter Japanese boy wearing the black spandex shorts with the green tank top, with the unruly mossy brown hair was undoubtedly her older brother. The taller one who was a little better off wearing his blue jeans and turtleneck sweater with his bangs covering his right eye was Nanashi.
They were both battered and bruised while Nanashi had a deep gash on the left side of his face. They were cuffed and sitting in the center of the town square surrounded by OZ soldiers who were there to keep them from getting away and to keep the crowd that was gathering around from getting to close.
Destiny looked on from the crowd, holding Whisper and staying close to Duo and Agnes. Before they left she had pulled her hair back into a braid like Duo's and was wearing a pair of sunglasses that he had lent to her as well as a cap and his jacket. It seemed to work because they walked by many of the soldiers that had "played" those games with her and they didn't seem to notice who she was. Even the one or two that looked strait at her, and with her many bruises that were plainly visible.
As she looked on she silently screamed for one of teammates to look up, to see her…to recognize her. As if he heard her thoughts her brother looked up and strait at her. Her heart stopped for a moment as she saw him smile slightly and give a small sigh of…relief? She wasn't quite sure.
'What ever it is that you're thinking of doing stop it,' Whisper mentally scolded her. 'There's nothing you can do for them right now.'
One of the soldiers saw him smiling though and hit him across the face with their gun.
That's when she realized that she had moved to the front of the crowd. And before anyone could stop her she stepped forward one more step and said, "Stop that. You're hurting him."
The soldier turned around and said in a rough voice, "Yeah that's sorta the point." Looking down at her he continued, "Whatcha gonna do about it little girl?"
"How about I rip out your cold black heart," she said in a dangerous tone.
"Whad you say?!" he said angrily as he gripped her neck, causing her to drop Whisper, and tore her sunglasses off. "I think a little girl needs to be taught some respect." He pulled his clenched fist back ready to punch her. Behind them her brother tried to get up to help her but the other soldiers held him down.
Everyone watch in amazement as the soldiers' hand came down and was caught by Duo Maxwell inches from the girl's face.
Still holding the guys wrist Duo said, "Didn't you're daddy ever tell you it's not right to hit girls?"
"What?" the guy said. But before he could do anything else Duo slipped an arm around Destiny and pulling some power into his palm that was on the guy's arm and just sort of pushed. The soldier let go of her neck and went flying into one of the buildings at least twenty feet away.
Clinging to Duo, Destiny's jaw dropped. How did he do that? she thought.
"Why you little…" one of the others started towards him. To everyone else it looked as if Duo had just looked at him and then the guy lifted off the ground and flew back several feet himself.
"Why do you bastards have to do this?" Duo yelled. "All you're doing is killing people. Innocent people who shouldn't have to die." The sky then started to darken as if it were turning night and a wind started to pick up, centered around Duo and Destiny. People stared in horror as they watched his eyes start to glow a deep purple.
It wasn't until a small yelp was heard from the girl still in his arms that he came to and got it under control. The wind stopped, the sky went back to being day and his eyes went back to normal.
He let go of Destiny, grabbed his head as if he had a headache and fell to one knee. Everyone kept staring, murmuring things to one another. Destiny leaned down next to him. Agnes pushed herself to the front and walked up to them.
Bending over them she said, "Come, we must get him out of here and back to my house." They helped him up. Fear shown in his eyes as they silently walked him away from the scene.
Destiny looked back to see the faces of her brother and Nanashi staring after her. Both their expressions pleaded for her not to follow Duo and Agnes.
Afraid she would never see them again she turn away, not wanting to look at them any longer. But not before she saw the single crow on the roof of the building that the soldier flew into only moments ago.
