Indiscernible

by Kit Kat

Disclaimer: I don't own Gundam Wing, so until the day my Fairy Godmother pays me a visit, I will have to keep wishing..........

Author's Note: I was doing about the arguments for and against abortion and also religious views on it in my Religious Education class. Then lo and behold, in the car on a very long trip to Leicester, I thought of this idea. It jumps from Hilde's POV to Duo's but I think it's obvious who's who when you read it. The first chapter is mainly setting the scene for the abortion argument storyline, if ya know what I mean! *Also on fanfiction.net.*

Chapter 1- Their Creation

" I don't understand it, Hilde. I really don't."

I listened intently. However much I wanted to move onto a different topic of conversation, I listened. Relena needed to do this.

" We've tried everything from improving our diets to going to bed earlier and nothing's having an effect whatsoever."

I took a deep breath.

" Maybe you're just trying too hard," I offered. " Take a step back from the situation and relax. Let it happen naturally."

There, not too bad if I do say so myself. I leaned back in my armchair, surveying the room. It was easy to tell it belonged to the Vice Foreign Minister. But Relena Yuy was not easily convinced.

" I'm only 22- I should not be having difficulties conceiving at my age! And we've been trying for a year now- and nothing!" she continued. " Then there's Heero."

" Why? What's he said about it?" I probed.

" Pretty much the same as you," Relena confessed.

" See."

If calm, logical Heero agrees with me, I must be right. When it comes to intellect, he's something else. It's born out of being a former soldier. Apparently. Duo's spun me that one many a time.

" You know Heero," I consoled her. " He's just not one for being overly emotional about anything. It doesn't mean he cares any less than you."

Relena took a long sip of her coffee and grimaced. It was flat cold by now. I was on my third. And my lunch break had nearly run out. I wasn't even supposed to have gone but I'd sneaked out, figuring it wouldn't matter as long as I was back on time.

I almost envied Relena for a moment. That was the advantage of being your own boss. The Vice Foreign Minister, apart from attending conferences, could adapt her working hours to suit herself. She also had the added advantage of being able to work from her estate, without ruining her newly washed hair in the wind walking to the bus stop.

I wasn't serious though. A little more cash wouldn't go amiss here and there but generally my life suited me just fine.

" Hey, Duo!"

By the time I'd left work, he was already home, perched at the table. A pen was tucked behind his ear and his tongue was sticking out with the effort of rifling through his papers.

" Lotsa homework?" I joked.

" Yup."

" Why doesn't Johnny help you out?" I asked.

Johnny was the new guy Duo had recruited to help him in the garage.

" I don't think so!"

I absent-mindedly fiddled with his long, chesnut braid. It was like silk to the touch. He was clearly lapping up the attention, the extrovert.

" I wish you'd come back, Hilde," he told me." Ever since you left it's been murder getting everything done." To put it mildly, Johnny was not a fast learner.

" I know, I know," I said. " But what I'm doing now is what I've always wanted."

" Your vocational calling, eh?" he remarked, his eyes twinkling. " Working as a foreign languages teacher to a load of snot-nosed kids?"

He was teasing. I gave as good as I got, always had.

" Yes, whilst you slave away in a stuffy garage, getting hot and sweaty." Even though he'd showered. I could smell his distinctive herbal shampoo.

He grinned. We both knew the garage he'd set up after settling into civilian life was a thriving business. The only downside was the backlog of paperwork, though it wasn't strictly true to say he spent all his time indoors focusing on work. He played basketball twice a week, was barely out of the gym and we'd both taken up karate. We made quite a pair.

"............and then she wanted me to come in for coffee but I knew what her idea of coffee was so I pretended I'd left the bath running," I sniggered, licking the last traces of chow mein out of my bowl.

I always had been a messy eater. It was something Hilde constantly picked me up on, though all in good humour.

" So I take it you won't be on any future dates with Stacey," she said. I pretended to think about it.

" Er, no!"

" At least you've been on a date in the last year!" Hilde moaned.

" So have you," I pointed out.

" I hope you're not counting Rik Dawson under 'date'!" she exclaimed. " Good job I was as relaxed about the whole relationship as he was. I just hope his other two girls took it as well as I did."

" Relaxed? Is that why you were scribbling 'Hilde Dawson' on some scrap paper the other day?" I'd caught her out now. She stammered and stuttered for the words. She finally found them.

" Well fine then, all-knowing house-mate, see if you can handle this!" She pounced on me, tickling me mercilessly, her fingers slipping through the button-holes of my shirt and poking me in the stomach.

What seemed like centuries later, we were both sprawled on the carpet, gasping for breath.

" Got ya there, Duo!" Hilde panted. She sounded quite giddy.

" Whatever!" I retorted. " Just admit you still hold a candle for Rik!" I made a move to tickle her again, upskittling the empty bowls from our Chinese. She was too nimble for me.

" As if! I am young, free and single and I plan to keep it that way for the time being!" Hilde declared. I could detect a note of seriousness to her voice. " Now if I may be allowed to change the subject, Mr Maxwell, I have reason to believe there is a rather good film showing tonight."

I breathed a sigh of relief. She was back to being sunny again. Good.

" Well, what's a good film without a little.......something special?" I flashed her one of my mischievous smiles.

" And what's that?"

" Alcohol," I replied, already up on my feet and rooting through the fridge.

**********

The film had long since finished. It had been enjoyable but a typical blood and guts one, since it was on the theme of war. I'd have thought that wouldn't have been a pleasant stroll down memory lane for Duo and perhaps I'd been a bit callous in choosing it but he didn't seem to care.

Perhaps it was the alcohol. Goodness knows how many he'd had. If the answer was as many as me, then he'd consumed a fair bit. I was starting to feel drowsy.

" Duo?"

" Yeah, babe?"

" Like the film?"

" Yeah."

" Are you tired?" I was vaguely aware of the fact that I was slurring my words.

" Very." He turned to face me, grunting with the effort. " Very tired."

A wave of something washed over me though I couldn't define it. Electricity maybe. He just looked so sleepily handsome it was a crime. His violet eyes were dazed and not only from the drink. He was clearly revelling in the warm, comfortable atmosphere.

I found my legs leaving the sofa of their own accord and settling down on the floor next to him. He wrapped a strong arm around my shoulders and held my body against his in a tight embrace. I hardly noticed this. The scent of his cologne underneath the smell of alcohol in the air was overpowering all my defences.

**********

We laid beside each other, leaning against the sofa for support. Time was of little meaning to me. I don't know what was running through Hilde's mind but even through my stupor I was absorbing her- her fair complexion, dancing eyes and the way her dark hair fell across her cheek. I hugged her slender body closer.

She closed her eyes and flopped against me, breathing a sigh of what appeared to be contentment; it wasn't entirely clear to my half-lidded gaze. Her hair tickled my face enticingly. The can after can of beer had worn my level of restraint thin. I kissed her dark waves, travelling further down to her lips.

The kiss was returned, though in my condition I truly don't think it would have bothered me if it hadn't have been.

I was just lying there, my chest rising and falling with quiet safisfaction. All of a sudden, there was no more than a hair's breadth between our lips.

After a few moments, he stumbled to his feet and somehow lifted me up in his arms in the direction of the stairs. But I still didn't feel completely at ease.

" Duo......."

" Shhh."

" But what about-" I was struggling to think straight.

" Shhh."

I couldn't help myself. I succumbed.
