Duo woke slowly; he was warm and comfortable. Not wanting to rise and face the world just yet he
sighed in contentment and rolled to his side or tried to. A heavy weight was resting against his chest.

Memories of the night before flooded his mind making him smile. The afghan he had thrown over them last night had been kicked down, leaving both Heero and himself bare from the waist up. Gently he stroked the smooth flesh of the youth's back.

Heero moved slightly, nuzzling his nose against Duo's shoulder. He was lying on his stomach, his face turned towards the back of the sofa. Duo ceased the caresses to Heero's back; wrapping his arms around the Japanese mans slender body. Heero let out a deep breath through his nose and snuggled deeper into the braided mans embrace.

Duo lay there, relishing in the feeling of having Heero in his arms. He had never enjoyed cuddling before but with Heero it was different. For the past few days he had this feeling deep inside him self, a feeling of love for the delicate youth. At first he tried to convince him self that it was lust, but his heart had told him that it was much more then that.

After what had happened last night the feeling had been confirmed. He was in love with Heero. He wanted Heero with him always and would do anything to protect him. He never wanted him to have to experience the horrors that he has had to endure ever again.

With the determination to see Heero's father behind bars rising with in him, Duo gently shifted his beloved off of his chest. He carefully slid out from beneath Heero. Once he was off of the couch he stood and checked the time.

It was still early, not even five am yet. He had plenty of time to look more closely at the paperwork Quatre and Trowa had brought to him. Picking up his clothing from the day before he slipped into the boxers and t-shirt, after he was dressed he booted up his computer and logged into his secure files, it took him a while to enter in the information from paperwork.

After all of the information had been entered he logged onto the Internet and began a search on some of the names from his files, primarily the man he believed to be Heero's father.

Most of the searches gave him no more information then he already had; he had just clicked onto a new page when warm arms slipped around him. Teeth nipped playfully at his ear causing him to smile; he closed his eyes basking in the feeling of Heero's arms.

Suddenly there was a tenseness in Heero's arms, causing Duo to open is eyes and look up in alarm, he could clearly see Heero's face in the glow of the computer screen and what he saw startled him.

Heero's eyes were wide and filled with fear. He was staring at the screen.

Duo's eyes shot over to the screen and for the first time he laid eyes on Heero's father.

There was a news article dated a few days after the death of Heero's mother. The photo that accompanied the article showed an American man with light hair, his eye colour was unknown for the photo was in black and white. The caption beneath the photo read “Odin Lowe”.

Duo stood, twisting in Heero's embrace so he was facing the shorter man. He kissed Heero's cheeks and forehead, trying to soothe the trembling out of the slim figure. Duo led the youth into the lounge and fished the pack of cigarettes out of Heero's discarded pants. He thrust the pack into the youth's hand motioning to him to smoke one.

Heero nodded and opened the small box, extracting one slim cigarette. He lit it up and took a deep drag; he held the smoke in his lungs for a moment before exhaling. Heero offered Duo a shaky smile.

// Don't worry, he won't find you here. Now that I know who he is and what he looks like we can arrest him for what he has done to you//

Heero nodded but Duo could see apprehension and fear with in Heero's deep blue eyes.

// Just sit in here and smoke, I need to finish up what I was doing. Then I'll make breakfast, okay? //

Heero simply nodded again.

Duo knew that Heero was terrified that his father would find him and take him away. But there was no way the man could find him, there were no records of Heero living with Duo. All the medical and police files were classified and all of his personal files for the case were securely locked away in his home computer or on a password protected disk that he kept locked in his safe at the law office.

Heero was perfectly safe.

Duo rushed to finish his research, carefully locking all of the information in his files. Once everything was secure, he shut down his computer. After noting the time, a little after six am, he came to the conclusion that it was a bit to early to call Wufei and let him know what he had found.

Besides he and his friends were getting together this evening to catch up and have a few drinks before Quatre and Trowa went back home. He could tell them then. Today was for Heero.

Duo turned back to the lounge and saw that Heero was curled up on the sofa, wrapped up in the afghan, his cigarette was forgotten slowly burning away to nothing in the ashtray. Sighing Duo walked up to the coffee table and snubbed out the filter before it burned.

// Get dressed, we are going out for breakfast. //

Heero, looking a bit detached, simply stood and walked to his room. He was still wrapped in the afghan.

Sighing again, Duo made his way to his own room to get dressed. Heero was in shock from seeing his father again. Duo knew that he had to do something. That was why they were going out, Duo was hoping that the distraction would help that it would something, anything to get Heero's mind off of the unpleasantness of his past, a past that Duo was determined to keep from repeating.

Heero decided that he wanted to shower first, so while he was showering Duo tidied up a bit, straightening the sofa and washing the cups from the tea he had shared with his guests the evening before.

Heero emerged from his room a short while later, he was dressed in light blue jeans and a long sleeve black t-shirt. His hair was still damp and he was carrying a small box in his hands.

Duo recognized the box as the one that Sally had given him, containing the supplies he needed to tend to Heero's ears. The drainage tubes had been removed before he left the hospital, now he simply had to make sure that both ears stayed covered with gauze and stayed dry until Sally said that they were healed enough to let them remain uncovered.

The violet-eyed man carefully peeled away the moist gauze, checking the inside for any delayed signs of infection. Finding none he sprayed a disinfecting mist into each ear then placed fresh gauze over them, taping it down with waterproof medical tape.

Once Heero's ears were taken care of, the pair donned their shoes and coats, after checking for keys and wallets they left to spent their day together.

They ate breakfast at Denny's; which was a much nicer option then a typical fast food restaurant. After they ate they went to a park to wait for the malls to open, it was still very cold but the park was beautiful, snow covered what in a few months would be green grass and icicles shimmered on the bare tree branches.

A few people were around, jogging, playing in the snow or skating on the frozen lake. Duo even managed to get Heero to join in a snow ball fight. The braided man smiled as he watched some of the tension bleed out of Heero face.

After the park they headed out to the mall, Duo wanted to pick out a few more gifts for his friends, and for Heero. He had also made sure that Heero had some spending money of his own. The blue eyed youth had tried to protest the offered money but Duo had been persistent, saying that Sally might be hurt if she did not receive a gift from him.

Heero had finally relented, taking the money into a Hallmark store to buy a few cards. While Heero was browsing the thousands of holiday cards Hallmark had to offer, Duo slipped into the nearest electronic store, which was conveniently located just across from the Hallmark store.

He had called this store a few days before and placed an order with his credit and was told that it would be ready for pick up today. The store was true to its word, after a quick flash of his ID, he was able to collect his purchase and sneak back into the Hallmark store before Heero had even noticed that the braided man was gone.

Heero's mood had lightened a great deal and was practically bouncing from store to store.

They spent a few hours milling through the holiday zoo that malls always became this close to Christmas. Heero had found a lovely bracelet that he planned to give to Sally and something special just for Duo that he kept hidden in the hip pocket of his jeans.

They ate lunch a Sabarro's {1} and had ice cream from Dairy Queen.

After lunch they meandered about for a bit more before Duo decided that it was time to go home. He had evening plans with his friends and they still ad to wrap up all of the gifts so they could be placed under the tree, for opening on Christmas morning.

They arrived home at a quarter to six, giving them just under two hours to wrap the gifts and have dinner before the guys showed up to take Duo out. Duo was a bit apprehensive about leaving Heero alone, he had had a strange feeling that someone had been watching them today, but just figured that he was being paranoid and it was just the heavy crowds at the mall that was making him uncomfortable.

The couple was sitting on the sofa after dinner simply enjoying each other company when Heero excused himself, signing that he was tired after the long day they had just had. Duo gave him a sweet kiss on the lips and bid him good night.

Once Heero was in his room he quickly pulled the gift from his pocket placing it on his bed, he had wanted to wrap it right away but with the wrapping of the other gifts and making dinner. He just could not manage to find the time, not without Duo seeing anyway.

He opened the small jewelry box carefully, inspecting it's contents and was relived to find the small silver cross was safe and secure. He touched the glistening item almost reverently then closed the box again. He removed a small scrap of shimmering blue wrapping paper from his back pocket, and wrapped up the gift, tying it off with a piece of silver ribbon.

Once the gift was wrapped he hid it beneath his pillow then stripped down to his boxers. Crawling under he covers he smiled softly to himself as he drifted off to sleep. Heero had been asleep for about twenty minutes when Quatre and Trowa arrived.

“Where's Heero?” Quatre asked. “We brought him a Christmas gift.”

“Oh, sorry Q, he's asleep. We went shopping for Christmas and spent much of the day at the mall. He was pretty beat when we got back.”

“I understand, are you sure it's alright to leave him here alone?”

“Yeah, he'll be fine, and it's not like were leaving for a week, were only going to be gone a few hours.”

“When is Wufei getting here?” Trowa asked, checking his watch for the time.

Duo glanced at the clock as well. “He should be here any minute.” The braided man replied.

The three friends sat in the lounge chatting for a few minutes, when there was a knock at the door. Duo rose from where he sat on the sofa, and went to let Wufei in. The Chinese man waited while the others donned their outer where.

“Are we going in separate cars or are we going to share?” Wufei asked once the group was out on the sidewalk.

“How about we all go in your car, Wufei. It's the only one big enough for all of us, then you can just drop us off here on your way home.” Duo suggested.

“Sure thing.” Wufei replied, unlocking the car doors. Duo took the passengers seat while Quatre and Trowa sat in the back.

While Wufei drove them to the bar, Duo told them about the information he had gathered that morning. Wufei said that he would relay the information to the department when he returned to work on Monday.

The group arrived at the bar a short time later and were soon engrossed in the drinks and conversation.
Unbeknownst to all was the dark figure lurking in the shadows out side of the building where Duo lived.

Tbc…

{1} Dunno if I spelled that right but Sabarro's is a pizza place with pretty good pizza by the slice; some of the larger stores have pasta and salads too.
