Kanarazu Gundam Wing
Prologue:
The Lady's Fury
The conference room was the same; from the white walls to the burgundy felt cushions of the chairs positioned around the hard oak table in the center of the room. The windows ran from the floor to the ceiling, draped with heavy, red curtains to match the chairs and carpet. The same room Trieze Khushrenada had spent hours in; planning his next move, mapping out his strategies. Many brilliant minds had come through here. Each one of them had played an important role in the revolution, each had had a hand in the ensuing war.
. . .And each had paid the ultimate price. For the sake of their ideals, their families-whatever the cause, they were gone now. The responsibilities to maintain their hard-earned peace now rested on another's shoulders and all hell was about to break loose.
"What the hell do you mean they were deployed?! Without my authorization!" She stood in haste, scattering papers across the table and floor. Her hands, which until now had been clenched tightly in her lap, slammed down on the surface scattering more papers. Her attendant desperately struggled to reorganize the hopeless mess. "I did not order this! Who the hell ordered this?!"
"Please, calm down," from the far end.
She narrowed a withering glare at the pompous official who'd dared to give her an order-Colonel Ningen. Her glare became more severe as a thought crossed her mind. It had been him. He'd ordered it. He'd sent her men out into dangerous space. He was the one who was responsible for killing them-him. Only, he wasn't really at fault; not in the eyes of those who would be finding out within the hour. She knew that if the mission went bad she was to blame; they were her men after all-all but one. Damn him.
"No! I will not calm down until someone tells me why my troops were deployed without my being informed." Her hands were clenched into fists at her sides. Her hair hung loosely, falling down her back with several smaller locks framing her face. Her brown eyes pierced each individual man before once again falling on the bastard who she knew to be responsible. "What did you do to my men?"
Colonel Ningen spoke in that deep voice he used only when addressing one of inferiority; she wanted to smack him. "Please sit down. We will all be able to think much more reasonably if you are not acting like a hell-spawn."
She sneered in response, but settled back into her seat. Her attendant handed her the newly straightened stack of papers and moved to stand just behind her chair. She calmly removed a lock of brown hair from her face and proceeded once again to obtain some answers. "I ask you again, why were my men deployed without my knowledge?"
"ah. . .//ahem//. . .We felt it was necessary to. . .umm. . . send them to the satellite as soon as we were informed of the . . .ah . . .situation." The lieutenant who spoke was sweating bullets. He was nervous about something; although whether it was because of her furious gaze or the severity of the situation he had helped to create no one could say.
"What 'situation'? There was no situation." This was wrong. This entire situation did not make sense. Unless she was not party to all the information. She turned away from the long-suffering lieutenant to focus on the real culprit. "Colonel? What did you drag my men into?"
The lieutenant obviously wasn't finished talking, "//ahem// . . . Please, you must understand. The situation turned out to be worse than we had anticipated and . . .we felt it necessary to act as quickly as possible." She threw him a look, he quickly he snapped his mouth shut.
"Colonel Ningen," the man quirked an eyebrow and gave her a demeaning smirk. Her hand itched wipe it off his face. "What have you done to my men?"
Ningen calmly folded his hands together and lay them on the cool surface of the table. "It is quite simple. I was informed that a terrorist faction was seen preparing its ship for departure. These men, he gestured to those sitting around the table, wanted to know how we planned on taking care of it. Knowing how reluctant you would be to take military action I made the decision in your stead." He shrugged his shoulders and gave an almost sympathetic smile when he looked up at her, "Unfortunately I hadn't considered the kind of weaponry they would be carrying. Doesn't make a difference now, however. Since they blew up the entire satellite, there is no possible way any-"
She flew out of her seat again; this time with enough force to knock the chair over. "Damn you! You bastard ! If you ever use my men for your own political gain again I will make certain the rest of your career is spent inside a cell. Do I make myself clear?!" She gripped the table so hard her hands were white.
"You overstep yourself. If you hope to keep your position after I become the head of your department you will withdraw that statement." He now stood, more to make himself feel more in control and less uncomfortable in her domineering stance than out of anger or frustration.
"When you bring my men back I will retract my statement."
"You know as well as everyone in here that that is impos--"
"Then it stands." She bowed low to the men at the table. "Good day to you gentlemen." Turning on her heel she stalked towards the door.
"You are not excused; I am not finished." Ningen moved to follow her out the door.
She turned around when she reached the door, her hand resting on the latch. "That's too bad Colonel, because I am finished with you." Then she left with her attendant following close at her heels.
* * * *
The other men had all left now. The only two men remaining in the room were Ningen and his secretary. "Would you like me to have her removed from her station Colonel?"
"A tempting though isn't it Bin? But no." He turned to look out the window.
Bin began clearing off the conference table. "But sir, she could ruin your campaign. Her influence among the people is great in space and on earth. If she says one word against you, you'll be ruined. Thus far she hasn't said anything, but after today, I wouldn't trust her restraint."
Ningen looked up from the view outside the window long enough to answer the young man. "Colonel Une is the kind of problem that will go away only if it is completely eliminated. Even if she were to lose her position here, she could find other people and places that would allow her freedom to work against me. As you just stated, her influence is strong. Therefore, we shall have to completely remove her from the picture. And very soon we will," he smiled, as if the thought of the act were enough to please him. "but first, I must receive confirmation that the objective was complete. We must eliminate one threat before we move on to the other." He stood up and straightened his jacket. "Do you have that number?"
Bin nodded, "It's on your desk. I placed it inside that file the doctor delivered earlier this morning." Ningen indicated his pleasure at the man's forethought and headed for the door.
"Is there anything else I can do?"
"No, not at the moment anyway. I'll send for you if I need anything though." Once in his office he opened the file Bin had mentioned earlier and quickly skimmed through it. Nothing. They still hadn't made any progress, but that was fine. There was still enough time left before he needed it. He could be patient. Flipping back to the front of the folder, he found the slip of paper Bin had used to write down the number. Hopefully the call would hail good news, and he'd be able to move on. And seriously, he didn't know how it could have failed. Everything had happened perfectly. Precisely. Now only one more problem had to be taken care of.
I started from AC 195, when the series ended, as opposed to AC 196, Endless Waltz. So, ten years to the day would make the year AC 205 (but you could figure that out). However, I have included the events and characters of Endless Waltz. To maintain consistency, any units of time will be in association to AC 195 unless otherwise noted within the text.
