Chapter 1

"Hey, you!"

I stopped in mid-stride as I heard that somewhat familiar voice call at me. Turning around, I'd barely enough time to prepare myself as a burly shape hurled itself against me... hard. I grunted as I pushed back against him, using his own momentum to shove him off. There was a shocked expression on his face for a moment, before he landed on his ass with a loud thud. My lips curled up into a sneer, as I crossed my arms and looked down at him in disdain.

"Oh, it's only you. I'd thought that I was being attacked by a rabid dog, but I guess I was wrong."

The man's face darkened angrily to a deep red, and I smirked at him cockily. By then, a small crowd had already surrounded us, staring with interested eyes. The bar music was pounding loudly through the air, so not that many people had noticed this little disturbance.

'The audience wanted a fight, so a fight I should give them,' I thought to myself. The man - I hadn't even cared enough to catch his name before - scrambled to his feet, and he clenched his fists as he glared at me.

"Give me back what is mine!" he snarled, a vein pulsing noticeably in his temple. He was really humiliated about the fall he'd taken, which only served to make him angrier. All the better; it wouldn't be a good show if he was scared, now, would it?

"I don't think so," I cooed, voice deceptively sweet. "I won her fear and square." My eyes then hardened to diamonds. "So fuck off!"

With an enraged roar, the man charged at me head-first. Taking advantage of the fact that he was too angry to think, I stepped over slightly, simultaneously tripping him with my right foot. Smirking when he landed face-first, I kicked him over onto his back. His slightly dazed expression turned to an angry one when I pushed my leather boot against his throat.

"You will always fall," I hissed softly, a smirk playing on my lips. "And I will be there every time to kick you back down."

I kicked his side dismissively, and strode calmly pass the crowd, which parted to let me through. The smirk never left my face as I headed towards the bar, knocking against the counter sharply. There had been no need to do that, however, since the bartender was already there, handing me my drink.

"Playing the dominator again, Heero?" he asked with a smirk.

I shook my head, and chuckled softly.

"There will never be a limit to the idiots out there, Trowa." I gave him an amused grin, and he laughed softly, shaking his right wrist. The bracelets there clinked merrily, and I grinned even wider. My eyes narrowed, however, when I saw that something was amiss. My arm shot out, and I grasped his wrist firmly, pulling him towards me. He took a sharp breath as he practically fell against the counter, but I ignored that and examined the bracelets.

"Where's the one I gave you?" I asked him, my voice sharper then it should have been.

My sharp eyes turned to his, as he snorted at me and pulled away. He glared at me, then shoved his sleeve up to show the silver dragon shaped bracelet on his upper arm. I gave him a sort of apologetic look, then leaned back slightly and took a sip of my drink. He shook his head at me, and reached up to massage his wrist tenderly. With a venomous look thrown my way, he turned around to walk away. I gave him a disgusted sigh, then reached over and spun him back towards me.

"Stop moping," I snapped. Catching my next words, I forced myself to calm down before continuing. "I'll apologize if that's what you want."

He frowned at me, but didn't pull away again. Reaching out, I pushed his bracelets out of the way to look at his wrist. My eyes widened at the marks that were already starting to turn red, and later, purple.

"God," I breathed. "I'm so sorry."

Trowa sighed, and then massaged the marks again. With a pained look at him, I pulled him over the bar and onto the stool beside me. Pushing those bracelets high up, I started massaging his arm with calculated strength.

"Sometimes, you just forget how strong you are," he said in a quiet voice that I almost missed. Grimacing, I didn't say anything, but just continued to massage it softly. People were starting to crowd around the bar curiously, wondering where the bartender was, but I ignored them. Who cared about them anyway?

"Forget your own strength, Yuy?" an amused voice said, heading towards us. Looking up, I gave Duo a glare, and then turned back to Trowa's arm. He didn't say anything, except to greet his boss.

"Just this once," I said through my teeth. "I said I was sorry to him."

"No," Duo said, ever so helpful. He sat down on the stool to my back, and propped his elbow on the counter. "You said sorry to God. There's a difference."

I turned to snap at Duo, but his eyes were teasing in a warm way. He knew that I felt bad about hurting Trowa; he'd just been trying to make the situation less serious.

"It's ok, Heero," Trowa said. "I'm not terribly hurt. It'd go away soon."

I looked up at him with questioning eyes, but he shook his head to dismiss my worry. Sighing, I let him go, and he swung back over the bar, landing softly on his feet. Duo snorted as I turned to him, eyes narrowed.

"Oh, don't pull that bullshit over me," he said, waving me away. "I was just joking, and you know it."

I rubbed the thick ring on my left index finger. Growling, I pulled myself to face the counter again, and gulped down a good part of the drink.

"What's up, lately? We haven't seen you in a while."

I shrugged, as a warm, bubbly feeling settled in my stomach. I looked at him from the side of my eyes, as he raised an eyebrow.

"I had shit to do - work and such." I shrugged again, not feeling like talking anymore.

"Work?" he gasped theatrically. "The great Heero Yuy work? Unheard of!" I shook my head, and gulped down the rest of my drink, slamming it into the counter. I gestured for Trowa to fill it up again, and slumped slightly onto the bar, hissing as my studs pressed into me.

"But seriously," Duo started. I turned to him with dark eyes. "Is everything ok?"

I took a deep breath, and exhaled sharply. Twirling the cup that Trowa had just handed to me, I propped up an arm and leaned against the palm.

"I had to get away from everything, you know?" I said, looking towards Duo. Duo nodded seriously, his bangs hanging into his face. I smiled weakly at him, and took another sip. "Can I just... stay here for a while?"

Duo stood up, and placed a hand on my shoulder. "You know you're welcomed anytime." With one last reassuring smile towards me, he walked away, presumably to go back to his office. Sighing, I chugged the rest of the drink and signaled to Trowa that I was going to the back room.

I flicked on the dim red lights, and shrugged off my long black jacket, throwing it over a chair. I felt somber again, as I pulled my silk shirt off, and kicked off my boots. Even as I fell to the bed, already asleep, pained thoughts filled my head.

* Flashback/Dream *

"Shit!" I cried out as a bullet grazed my leg. I crashed down the hallway, Wufei close on my heels. "This was a trap!"

Rounding a corner, I skit to a halt and aimed my gun back towards the way we came. I fired 3 bullets, and 3 of the 8 men fell.

"Heero!" Wufei called urgently. "We have to go - now!"

As we ran, bullets whizzed around my head, and I heard a curse from behind me. Turning around, I saw Wufei's crumpled form on the floor, pain etched on his face. I rushed back and pulled him up, and continued the scramble to the exit.

We rounded another corner, and I sprinted wildly towards the exit. The dim red light of the exit sign was almost like a beckon, as I hurled towards it. Suddenly, Wufei stumbled and he fell, a pained gasp coming from his lips. I tried to pick him up again, but he shoved me off.

"Go!" he cried hoarsely. "Save yourself!"

"I can't leave you -"

"GO!"

I looked at him, with blood pouring out of the wounds on his shoulder and at his side, and my expression hardened. Bracing myself, I stood with my legs wide apart, facing the hallway into the building. I held a gun in each hand as I waited tensely for the men to come for us.

Suddenly, they were all that I saw. I started shooting off bullets, each time hitting something. Suddenly, the gun clicked emptily. There were still 2 men coming towards us; wounded, but alive. I prepared myself to die as I watched their angry expressions, as the bullets flew. We weren't hurt, though; Wufei'd shot down the last 2 men, emptying his gun as well.

"Let's go," Wufei hissed through clenched teeth.

Whirling around, I scooped him up despite his protests, and sprinted out of the place. I hopped fences and ran for what seemed like hours, before we finally got to a woody part of the land.

"Put me down!"

Silently, I complied, and leaned him against a tree. His expression was one of agony, and I clenched my fists.

"We need to get you to a hospital."

"There's no need to risk our cover," he choked through hitched breathes. "I'll be fine."

"You're bleeding," I pointed up, bending down to pick him up again.

"Stop being such a mother hen!" he snapped at me, swatting me away. His strength had waned, however, and I picked him up like a kitten. "Put me down!"

I gave him a hard glare, and he fell silent finally. Holding him closely to my chest, I started running to the hospital that I'd seen on the map earlier. We arrived there in good time, though by then, Wufei had practically blacked out.

"Wufei, stay with me," I said quietly, as I headed towards the emergency rooms. People tried to stop me, but I gave them hard glares until they fell silent. Once there, I stepped to a doctor who'd come out of one of the rooms.

"What -" he began.

"He was shot," I interrupted tersely. The doctor took one look at Wufei's condition and gestured quickly for me to follow him. I put Wufei onto a rolling table and followed the doctor, even as I saw and heard people whispering around me. One nurse was already on the phone, sneaking looks at me.

"Wufei, Wufei," I murmured into his face. "Stay with me."

He gave me an intense look as I gripped his hand, and swallowed thickly.

"Go," he whispered hoarsely. "Before the police come."

"I can't -"

"Please, Heero," he whispered, begging me with his eyes. "I don't want you caught."

"But -"

"Go."

With one last pained look at him, I released his hand, and stepped back to watch him get wheeled away by nurses. I held his eyes for a moment, before I heard distant sirens. Exhaling heavily, I flipped around and crashed through the hospital. Shocked people jumped out of my way as I hurled out of the hospital doors. The police cars squealed to a stop, and I sprinted the other way, ignoring their yells. I knew I would be okay, but what about Wufei? What would happen to Wufei?
