Chapter 19:

The waiting room was empty when Raven finally stumbled numbly into the infirmary wing. He had already called Trieze to the school telling him a quick version of everything that had happened. By the tone of the tawny haired man's `I'm on my way', he wasn't in the least happy with him. The thought alone made his stomach painfully cramped and cold.

Silently, he sat down in a chair bringing his knees up to his chest. What would he do if Trieze were to leave him? He didn't have anything hadn't for some time now. He'd be all alone again dealing with his own thoughts and memories. Another chill went down his back just as Trieze's angry steps echoed through the infirmary's halls.

Raven looked up but said nothing. He didn't bother to stand as the man stalked pass him and through the double doors. The embroidered whitewashed doors swung wordlessly before settling. The only sound made outside them was the miserable groan from the silver haired young man.

Inside the infirmary was what looked like a ballroom. The floor was stone grey covered in a glimmering coat of glaze. The ceiling was high seemingly going on forever with chandeliers floating on mystical winds. The crystals sparked and glittered rainbows against the beige walls. Below were rows and rows of beds all strict with a white mattress and paper thin covers. Four of the thirty-odd beds were occupied with a patient each.

Trieze walked through the many rows with only one thing in mind. His daughter. His storming blue eyes scanned over each youth being attended. When his eyes finally fell upon the form of his daughter, a not eased in his gut only to be replaced by another.

Mariemaria was ghastly pale. Beads of cold sweat coated her frail body. Her bed had been changed into something that resembled a little girl's bed. Pole went up at each corner forming an intricate design. Transparent curtains draped down around her to provide some privacy.

Trieze snorted mirthlessly. It was exactly what Mariemaria wanted in her room.

“She'll be fine.”

Trieze turned around quickly at the voice. Hannah stood smiling warming at him.

“No need to cry, Mr. Kushrenada, your daughter will be fine.”

//Cry?// Trieze rubbed absently at his eyes. Sure enough his hand came back wet. Again he snorted. “I haven't cried in years. Gods, I was so frightened…” He took a deep breath to collect himself then offered the woman a watery smile.

“She'll have to stay in here for a few weeks. She lost a lot of blood and the spell to replace the flesh that was eaten by the lempira will take a couple of days to heal her completely.”

“Very well.” Trieze nodded and took one long look at his daughter. “I suppose until then there will be no visitors allowed?”

Hannah shook her head. “I'm afraid that will not be permitted until the spell come into effect. If all goes well the spell should be able to make a powerful enough antibody to keep her from developing any infection.”

“I understand. When she wakes up let her know that I'll be outside, please?”

“Of course.”

Raven looked up at the sound of the infirmary doors opening again. The almost nonexistent creak was loud in his sensitive ears making his stomach drop more. Cautiously, he stood up wringing his hands nervously. Trieze would either stop to talk to him or walk away. Either way he was going to get an apology in.

“Trie-“

“Mariemaria will live through the incident.” Trieze said stopping in front of the slighter man. “Am I wrong to blame you for what happened to her?”

Raven shook his head slowly lowering his gaze.

“Am I wrong to wish it was you instead of her?” Another shake. “Am I wrong to blame you for not being able to protect my only child?” Another shake.

By this time the young Japanese teacher had turned his head completely away from the other. Tears threatened to fall but he stubbornly kept them at bay. “You are within your right.” He struggled to say. A surprised gasp left his lips when he was suddenly grabbed by his arms and pulled forward. His eyes close involuntarily fully expecting a blow. When he was pressed against Trieze's chest instead, his eyes opened.

“Then why do I feel so guilty for even thinking it? I thought of all these things and more before I arrived here and as mad as I wanted to be….it made me feel like such an ass. You and Marimaria are so important to me. I can't lose either of you.”

“But…”
“It's not your fault. You did as expected of the last member of the White Fang Clan.” Trieze cupped the slighter man's chin and lift his face to look into his eyes. “You did a great job.” He said again before bestowing a kiss on his husband's lips. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” Raven countered nuzzling his head against the taller man's chest contently. “I…I feel so guilty…I was supposed to protect her…”

“You're not up to par because of the other night. Everything will be fine.”

“Gods, I hope so.”

“Damn it, lady, I don't need any attention. I'm fine.” Duo grumbled after being forced back into the hospital bed for the umpteenth time. Almost instantly the strict bed morphed forming a semi-hard mattress framed in a dark cherry oak bed frame with black pillows and a black comforter. The American sighed heavily having gotten tired of the little trick the third time round.

“Just wait until Lady Une arrives.” Hannah insisted with almost a nervous tone. “You may be in more trouble than you know.”

“What kind of trouble?” Talim asked. His bed had morphed into a round feather soft bed framed with black wood of some kind. His comforter and pillows were a combination of red and black. Every now and then he'd think of another shape.

“Tell me, what did you feel when the shadow went through you?”

“It was…hard to breath.” Duo started looking towards Talim for confirmation.

The redhead nodded. “And I couldn't move for a while. Then it was this feeling like…something was being pulled out of me but it didn't hurt that bad.”

“And then it just faded away?”

Both youths nodded then shrugged. At the same time they asked, “So what's the verdict?”

“I can't say just yet. I'll have to wait until Lady Une arrives.” Hannah reported moving towards her other patient. She smiled in amusement at the girl sprawled diagonally across a queen size bed with a Stitch and Taz stuffed animal. Her injured ankle was propped up carefully by several feather soft pillows. “She is something else.” The hobgoblin chuckled as she turned towards the infirmary doors. “You two stay in bed or I'll give you both shots in the rear.”

Talim and Duo `eep-ed' and did as they were told.

TBC……

A/N: Hmm….I have not an idea what I'm doing right now. I know what I want to happen but not how I'll go about doing it. Just let me know if I'm being too vague or something.
