Make-believe life in a realistic world…
~*~*~*~(Heero's POV)
The day was the same as always, I followed Relena to meetings, conferences and such, constantly on the look out for any type of threat. Though I didn't see myself very valuable, her life, to me and to the billions of other people out there, was more precious than anything in the world, and so back on Libra, I had made myself a promise, to protect her no matter what. And the only way, I would ever not protect her, was if I died trying, and even then I would try to protect her from the other side. She was special; she was important. She was everything that I wasn't and the blood-thirsty, power-seeking, greed-driven people of the world hated her for it. She was a symbol of purity in our corrupted, manipulated, and blood-stained world today. And I planned on keeping her out of harms way. But even though today went just like every other day... I couldn't help but feel as though something were wrong, something bad was going to happen; that something terrible was in waiting…
"Heero? Did you hear me, Heero?" I blinked, turning to Relena,
"I'm sorry, what were you saying?" she stared at me a moment, her sea colored eyes considering me closely,
"Do you feel alright?" she asked, her voice concerned, her eyes showing slight worry.
"Yes, I'm fine. What were you saying?" She smiled,
"I've been given the rest of the day off, and so I decided to go home early. That's okay with you isn't it?"
"The rest of the day off? Why?"
"I'm not sure. The delegates from colony L6N-287411, had an emergency on their colony, and had to reschedule a month from now, and something or other happened with some of my other meetings, and so I was left with nothing to do for the rest of the day."
"Hn. I find that suspicious."
"I find it a blessing." she replied, standing from her desk, and stretching. "I could use a day off Heero, as could you. We've both been working too hard, it's time we took a break." smiling, she picked up her suitcase, and began walking out of the office. I grabbed my bag, and followed suite, as a sense of foreboding crept over me.
Outside, as we were walking towards the car, I stopped to look back at Preventors, the massive building was the same as always, but there was just something about it that wasn't right, and I couldn't figure out what…
"Heero? Are you coming?" Relena asked, as she reached for the car door handle. She turned to look at me, "Is everything okay, Heero?"
"No. Something is wrong. Something is terribly wrong." Just then, Preventors exploded into flames, explosions on each floor blowing out windows, as broken glass and debree showered down on us. I shoved Relena to the ground, covering her body with mine. A cloud of smoke enveloped us, as several stories of the building collapsed. Shattered glass rained down all around us, I could feel pieces of it cut me through my jacket. Relena whimpered softly beneath me, I could feel her heart pounding rapidly in her chest, almost as rapidly as my own. I couldn't help but think that if we had stayed in the building a few moments longer… we'd both be dead. The thought frightened me; I didn't really care about my own life, but Relena's life was far more important. It was too important to me, and too important to the other people of the world. I gladly sacrifice my life for her, I'd gladly do anything to protect her, and she I would… didn't she?
Slowly, it grew quiet, and I cautiously crawled off of Relena, helping her to her feet. She gazed around with wide eyes at the damage. Preventor's HQ was almost completely demolished, a few of the floors still intact but engulfed in flames. Relena rushed towards the burning building, I quickly grabbed her around the waist, restraining her.
"Heero let me go! There could be people still inside! Let me go!" she pleaded, her eyes begging with me.
"No Relena. The building is far too damaged, it could collapse at any minute, and anyone that was inside couldn't have survived."
"But… what if someone did?" she choked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Relena, we can't. It's too dangerous! That was a terrorist attack on your life, terrorist who could be near by waiting to see if you survive, and if not they ma try to take your life. We have to get out of here!" silently, she nodded, as we turned back to the car, just as it too exploded, the force sending us both flying backwards. Something sharp hit my head, and when I opened my eyes again, I saw stars. Relena, I frantically looked around. Was she okay? Was she hurt? Where was she? She was lying completely still on the concrete, her business suit slightly torn in areas, and dark with soot, but she seemed uninjured. I rushed over to her, shaking her shoulder slightly,
"Relena. Relena open your eyes and answer me." I waited what seemed an eternity, but slowly she let out a moan as her eyes fluttered open.
"W-what happened?"
"They planted a bomb in the car too. Come on Relena, someone plan on you being dead, staying here would only work to our disadvantage." I grabbed her hand, pulling her behind me towards the parking lot, scanning the area for a vehicle to "borrow". Spying a motorcycle, I hopped on, handing Relena the helmet,
"But Heero, this isn't ours-"
"We'll return it later." quietly, she complied, getting onn behind him, wrapping her arms tightly around him, and if the situation hadn't been so grave, his mind would have been going wild. Her every touch nearly drove him to insanity, how it was so simple, and yet set him on fire, or made him want to run for cover. How she made him ask so many questions every time to was near him, every time she touched him, every time she looked at him… He shook his head, as the bike roared to life, he had to get her out of there, get her to somewhere safe, had to get her home.
Heero sped down the driveway to Brussels and gasped in horror at what he saw. The building was completely in flames, almost completely destroyed. He spun the bike around, kicking in more speed, he had to get Relena away before she saw it.
"Heero! The house is the other way." she yelled over the wind,
"I know. But it'll be targeted for sure, since you live there!" she stiffened, and leaned closer to him. His mind was whirling. He had to take her somewhere. Somewhere safe, where he could call Colonel Une, and ask what he should do. She had no where really left to go. Preventor's was gone, her home, God only knew where else they had planted a bomb. What was there for him to do? Where could he take her? Who was after her? All of the questions seemed insignificant to him though, whoever they were, why ever they were after her, and no matter what ever happened, he would protect her…
