Chapter One

Sage started out the door with her dog. Usually she didn't mind walking her, but today was an exceptionally gloomy day. The war had been raging with not one strip of hope, as the papers had been saying… EMPIRE STATE COMES CRASHING DOWN-PEOPLE TERRORIZED AT LAOS-RIVERVIEW BASE UNDER COMMAND BY ENEMY-TREIZE KUSHRENADA CONTINUES BATTLING, yea, the headlines weren't exactly great.

The year was A.C.199, and the girl was Sage. Sage was a slim girl with hazel hair and emerald eyes that one could easily get lost in. Chatty by nature, the war had dampened her joy, and all that was left was a small voice within her crying out for peace. Sage Bennington was her real name, and as her mother and father were still here, she lived in a normal house on 72nd Street; she was not really anything too special.

She turned the corner, counting the cracks in the sidewalk. "Why cant everyone just be happy again?" she mused quietly to herself, not noticing the tall boy in front of her until they collide.

"Damn! Watch where you're going!" she said irritably.

The boy helped her up, apologizing the entire time. "I'm so sorry, I was looking for 899--72nd Street--you wouldn't happen to have directions to the place, would you?"

899 72nd, huh? Wonder what he wants at my house… She looked up at him with a determined and mad look in her eye, then spies the blonde hair and the blue eyes and her eyes widen then narrow into little slits. `Who wants to know?" she said cockily. Then, suddenly a shadowy image of her old self flashes by and she sticks out her hand and grins, showing her teeth with braces. "I'm Sage Bennington."

A surprised look comes to his face as he studies her closely. Could it be? He ponders quietly, it had to be, she fit the description. "I'm Quatre, Quatre Winner." He accepts the handshake and sighs. "And you, Sage Bennington, are needed back at base zero."

"I'm not going anywhere I don't know about." She takes a step back and looks at him warily. She had often heard of the Winners, didn't they own half of the colonies? And they never had a boy, only girls, unless it wasn't put into the newspapers.

The boy pulled out a little vial and covers his nose. "I'm really sorry, but I have no choice!" he flicked the top off of the vial and a bluish gas envelopes her, she faints into a heap on the ground, and Quatre picks her up, carrying her to the waiting car. He gets into another one behind it and they both drive off.
