Chapter Eleven

Sage pulled on her helmet and flicked the visor down.

"Ready for takeoff-over." She said over the com system.

"Got it! Takeoff in Five…four…" Sage was afraid. This was going to be a little harder than stealing battle plans. Ok-so it would be a lot harder.

"Three…"

She tensed, her hands tightened on the controls. This was her first mission as a true pilot. She had better not blow it.

"Two…"

And her family was at stake.

"One…All systems go!" Sage was thrown back into her chair by G-forces as the spaceship propelled itself out and up. Once she reached the atmosphere, it would go autopilot automatically and she could relax. The spacecraft began to veer and shudder. She snapped on a couple of switches and jerked up on the controls, managing to straighten out. A little beep signified that she was out in deep space.

Sage aimlessly floated about a moment to let the tracking system figure out their coordinates. Once it did, the rocket boosters roared to life and the craft shot forward. She was on her way.

She docked in at the landing strip. Throwing on a pair of sunglasses and slipping out of her spacesuit, she stabilized the ship and leaped out. She landed lightly on her feet as a result of the new gravity free atmosphere.

"So this is it, huh?" She put her hands on her hips and looked around. It was exactly as she had remembered it when her father brought her here as a little girl. Her father had been a civilian craft pilot. Sage walked out onto the sidewalk after checking in at customs. She could see Pearl City from here. A small squeal of glee escaped her as she hailed a taxi. She was on her way home!

Sage ordered the taxi to turn away three blocks from her house. She must be nuts. Exactly how many wanted posters have I seen on the way here? With my face on them? I can't just show up at the front door… Sage looked sadly at her past home. The war was her life now. Turning sadly away, she shuffled her way down to the local bar, where she grabbed a drink and sat in a corner where she could watch everybody.

Nobody suspicious looking, atleast not yet. Of course, OZ troops wouldn't walk around in uniform-that would be too easy. She had thought too soon. Three OZ soldiers walked in in complete uniform. Sage smiled and supported her head with her hand. This is going to be fun! I get to act… Sage stood and smiled coyly, catching the eye of one of the soldiers. He paused and pointed her out to his friends, and they made their way over to her.

"Hey baby…you gotta boyfriend?" The first soldier asked, sidling up beside her.

Sage purred.

"No-I'm single.. How about you? You look like fun…" She stroked his face with one finger. Silently, she was repulsed. The soldier winked at all of his friends.

"How about you come back with me…I could show you the sights!" His friends laughed loudly. Sage wrapped her arms around his neck.

"I'd love to…" She got down from her perch on the bar table and followed them out, walking to what looked like a warehouse. The first soldier punched in three numbers and a letter, all of which Sage watched and noted.

876F. Gotcha..

She suddenly whirled and punched one of the soldiers in the jaw squarely. He fell to the ground, and the other two pulled their guns on her. Sage dived low and cracked one behind the knees, sending him flying-as well as his gun. Sage caught the little revolver neatly and pointed at the last soldier's head, grinning softly.

"I've. Got. A. Boyfriend." She thwacked him over the temples with the barrel of the gun, tossing it down on the pile of men as she passed.

"Say hi to Satan for me!" Chuckling at herself, she shushed and went stealth. A small, pen-like button lay resting in her hand. When the time to push it came, she would, but first she had to get every OZ troop into the building. She stepped out in the middle of a mob and whistled loudly. All activity stopped as all eyes shifted to her. Sage grinned and waved cutely, flicking her hair over her shoulder.

"Hi guys!"

"Hey-what are you doing here kid?!?!?!" That was her cue. Sage turned and ran, locking doors behind her as she went. The alarm went off, but she kept running, and when she reached outdoors snapped open the cover of the button and pressed it, all the while diving impressively through the air to land behind a boulder.

The roar of the blast was deafening. Sage covered her ears and rolled into a ball, hugging her knees tightly. Pieces of debris flew over her head as she stood, silhouetted in the red fire of the blast. A small tear fell from her eye, and she dropped the detonator button.

"So this is it." She stood limply for a moment, watching the flames lick and devour everything in sight. "All of these people had families like me, I bet. And one little girl ended it all." She bowed her head, then turned to complete the second part of the mission.
