I'm Not an OZ Soldier

"Look, practically all the proof points to the fact that I'm not an OZ soldier!" you protest. "Well, other than the fact that I was wearing an OZ uniform and hanging out near the base, but as your friend Heero knows VERY WELL, that was because I actually had to sneak into the base to plant the bombs. I was also near the base because I'd just left it and was blowing it up. Got that? NOT because I'm with OZ and somehow got wind of the fact that someone was about to blow the stupid place up! And besides, if it wasn't me who rigged the place to explode, then who do you think did it? Did you see anyone else around there? Well? Did you? I thought not! So, if you didn't see anyone else, then either A) They're very good at being stealthy, B) They were caught in the blast, C) The whole base-exploding thing was an accident that they themselves caused, or D) I was the one who blew it up. And as you very well know, if it was B, the person's an idiot. If it was C, then the OZ soldiers are even dumber than I thought. And if it was A, then your soldier skills need some work. So what does that leave? D! That means I probably blew up the base, unless some vengeful ghost of times past decided to do it. And what're the chances of that happening? About the same as me meeting Shinigami in the next ten seconds!"

For some strange reason or another, the braided boy seems to find that hilariously funny. The others shoot him odd looks, and you do the same. "What's his problem?" you mutter out of the corner of your mouth to Heero.

He shrugs. "Don't ask. He has a lot."

"Ah. Okay, then. Why hasn't he been locked up in a mental asylum by now?"

"That's what we'd all like to know," the Chinese boy mutters. The braided kid sticks his tongue out at him.

"Okay…" you mutter. "Well, then, since it seems like I'm going to be stuck here for a while, you mind telling me your names?"

"And what about your name?" Heero asks.

You give him the most innocent look you can manage. "I already told you my name!"

He shakes his head. "No, I mean your real name."

"That is my real name!" you pout. He glares at you, and you glare back. Glaring contest ensues. However, as we all know perfectly well, no one, and I mean no one, can beat Heero when it comes to death-glares. So, after five minutes of complete silence, you finally give in and tell them your real name. The blond boy responds in turn, telling you the names of the rest of the group.

Leaning back, you sigh slightly. "Okay, now we know each other's names and all, mind telling me if you believe me or not?"

Duo shrugs, grinning at you apologetically. "We would, but I'm afraid that you probably wouldn't like the verdict." You give him a strange look, and he shrugs. "Hey, don't ask me. Heero already told us about how you two met, and your story seems believable enough. The question is, what does Mr. Perfect Soldier think?"

You turn to Heero. "Yeah, Mr. Perfect Soldier. What do you think?"

He glares at you. "Don't call me that."

You give him one of your patented cheery grins, feeling considerably more relaxed now that you're reasonably sure they won't just randomly pull out a gun and shoot you in the head because you said something when no one asked for your opinion. "Okay, I won't. So tell me, what do you think, Hee-chan?"

Heero stares at you in disbelief, and you just give him a smile. "What, are you going to answer me or not?"

"Hn."

You grumble something under your breath about wanting a straight answer, that consists of more than just a single sound that means absolutely nothing unless you call in a couple cavemen to translate it, before you look up at him again. "Aw, c'mon, can't you at least give me the benefit of the doubt here?"

"That would be nice, wouldn't it?" Duo comments. Wufei smacks him.

Heero just looks at you, his face unreadable. "Normally, that would work, but where OZ is concerned, things are different."

"What he means to say is that we'd believe you, except that trust isn't exactly an option," Quatre explains. "There are still people out there who want to get back at us for what we did during the last war, and we can't take that chance."

You give them a pleading look. "So nothing I say can make you believe me?" Quatre and Duo give you slightly sympathetic looks, and the others just look at you coldly. "Nothing? Not even if I tell you who I am, why I'm doing this, etc. etc.?"

"It won't help," Heero says, about to turn away. You latch onto his shirt, however, and refuse to let go. He looks at you, raising an eyebrow. "What are you doing?"

"C'mon, just give me a chance! I'll tell you, and then we can all be friends, right? Please?" You give him the chibi eyes. No one you've met so far can resist the chibi eyes. It's not a very common feature in soldiers, to be sure, but you're not exactly the model for soldier-ish behavior.

To your surprise, Heero shakes his head. You pout and turn up the cuteness meter. Though he tries to hide it, you can see it in his eyes; he's wavering slightly.

The slight spell you've woven over him is broken when Wufei snorts. "Weakling onnas, have to resort to such pathetic maneuvers to gain attention," he mutters, turning to leave. "Ignore her, Yuy. She's got nothing to tell us."

Heero nods sharply, prying your grip from his shirt and heading towards the door. Before he exits, however, he turns back to look at you. That one look turns out to be his downfall. Somehow or another, you've managed to sustain the chibi eyes for this long, and when he sees you, you have the most pleading look that's ever been seen on the face of a human. As soon as he looks at you, you sniff slightly, and big tears begin to well up in your eyes. Fake, of course, but Heero doesn't need to know that.

Luckily for you, Duo and Quatre are still standing in the doorway, while Trowa had already turned to go off after Wufei. If it weren't for them, you probably wouldn't have gotten the sympathy you needed to make your little ploy work. Duo glances at Heero, giving him his own pleading look. "Aw, c'mon, Hee-man, look at her! Do you just want to leave her like this? At least listen to what she has to say!"

Heero glances at him, then sighs and gives in. "All right. Go get Wufei and Trowa, and we'll listen to what she has to say." Duo nods and leaves. You give him a slight smile and mutter a soft, "Thanks."

In your head, you're doing a little victory dance. 'Haha! Score another victory for the undefeated chibi eyes! Now, what to tell them… well, the truth, of course. These guys are too smart to believe it if I lie to them. Now then, how much to tell them…' You don't have much time to think, however, as Duo returns with Trowa and Wufei in tow. Heero nods at you, a signal to begin, and you open your mouth to speak…

Tell them everything. If you hold anything back, they're sure to know, and you're lucky to at least have this opportunity right now. If you skip out on some things, how will they ever trust you? - go to page thirty-one

Only tell them what you think they need to know. It's a soldier's priority to keep the top-secret things… well, top-secret. It's a risk, but if you're going down, you don't want Doc Y and the others to get caught, too. - go to page thirty-two
