Timeline: AC 195 (after the battle with Libra)
Wufei sat on the shelf of an open window, allowing the moonlight to filter in and bathe his weary body. After the battle against Libra, they had all safely returned to earth. They were currently housed at one of the many Winner estates. This particular property was not too far from the underground Arabic base. Quatre was recuperating from his run in with Dorothy Catalonia, while the rest of his friends were resting from the past battle.
Gazing up at the moon, Wufei sighed, discontent. They had won the battle and White Fang was no more. Neither was OZ or Romefeller. It seemed as if all his enemies were gone. But were they?
No, he decided. He had one enemy left.
Memories.
Memories of a young girl, no older than he. With long, onyx colored hair, worn in pigtails. He groaned, feeling the loss and despair creep upon him once again. Just as it had that day in the field of flowers. A field that no longer existed. He couldn't even go to her grave now. For her grave, along with his home, was gone. Destroyed.
"Meiran..."
The whispered word filled the night air; a deep sadness seemed to coat everything around the young Chinese pilot. He blinked once, twice, then finally gave up and allowed the tears to cascade down his face in a river of sadness.
/I stand at your gate and the song that I sing is of moonlight.
I stand and I wait for the touch of your hand in the June night.
The roses are sighing a Moonlight Serenade./
A sweet fragrance fills the air, bringing with it remembered times, both good and bad. The scent of jasmine, marigold and honeysuckle brushed past his nostrils. The scent was heady, strong and familiar. It brought to mind what he had lost, the pain he had endured.
Looking out the window once more, Wufei's onyx moved over the lush scenery before him. The garden was a beautiful place, but he saw none of it. In his minds eye, he was home. Home on L5 with his family.
Home with his wife.
He looked around hm and was shocked to see the room had vanished. He stood in a field of flowers; daisies, dandelions and marigolds surrounded him. His hair flew in the breeze, no longer restricted in his customary ponytail. He raised his hand to his face and felt his reading glasses.
/The stars are aglow and tonight how their light sets me dreaming.
My love, do you know that your eyes are like stars brightly beaming?
I bring you and sing you a Moonlight Serenade./
Gazing about him, he saw the bright summer's day. He lifted his arms and was astonished at his attire. His customary white long-sleeved tunic and pants, along with black slippers, adorned his body. He rested his hand at his neck and could feel the jade medallion he had received on his wedding day.
He gasped, feeling arms encircle his chest, a firm body pressing tightly against his back. A face nuzzled his neck, sending shivers up and down his spine.
"It's about time you got here."
Wufei froze, his senses on full alert. It was impossible. He couldn't be hearing that voice. The owner of that beautiful voice had been dead for years now.
"What's the matter lover? Did I scare you?"
Wufei turned around, the warm arms still around his waist. He stared down at the lovely face before him. His fingers reached up, caressing the rose-petal soft cheek. The onyx eyes, so like his own, stared back up at him with mischief. "Nataku...Meiran..."
Meiran grinned, hugging him tight. He closed his eyes and held her against him, just as tightly. "Hai. I am here. I heard you calling me. I'm sorry about leaving. It was something that I had to do."
"I know."
They both sighed, letting the closeness of the other sooth their troubled spirits. Meiran finally looked up. She placed her hands on either side of his face, gazing into his eyes. Caressing his cheeks, she smiled. "You haven't changed. Still as handsome as ever."
Wufei blushed. He had never been comfortable with such compliments. Especially when they came from her. "Mei..."
"I know. I know. You hate compliments." Meiran tilted her head to the side, still caressing his cheeks. Moving forward, she touched her lips to his lightly. "I've missed you, Fei."
"And I you." These three simple words carried with it all his loneliness and heartache at loosing her. He looked deep into her beautiful eyes, seeing his soul within their depths. He took her face in his hands, bringing her lips to his.
Moaning slightly, Meiran wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer. Her body pressed against his, sending flashes of pleasure and desire through him.
/Let us stray till break of day
In love's valley of dreams.
Just you and I, a summer sky,
A heavenly breeze kissing the trees./
Looking up, panting, Wufei came to himself with a start. He was no longer in a field of flowers, but the room at Quatre's estate. Placing his hand to his heart, he felt the fast paced beating of his heart. He took a deep breath, exhaling loudly.
The vision had been so real. Not vision...memory. He swallowed, closing his eyes, remembering that day. That was the first time they had made love. It had been special...awe inspiring. Never in his life since that day had he felt the same. A few days afterwards, she had died in that same field of flowers.
Without him noticing, tears fell from his eyes, a small river flowing. He fell to his knees, unbearable pain, anguish and misery consuming his heart and soul. His soul...he had no soul now. His soul had died in that field of flowers.
A whispered touch moved across his cheek, brushing away the tears. His blurred vision cleared, seeing for the first time a vision so breathtaking that it took his breath away.
He did not believe in angels. Angels were a part of Duo's religion. He remembered Duo once describing them. Beautiful and ethereal, not of this world.
That was what was before him. A vision so beautiful he didn't think he could look at it for long. A white, shimmery gown flowed from narrow shoulders. Black hair spread about, cascading in ringlets.
His throat closed and he fell to his knees before this vision, unable to comprehend what was happening. "Meiran..."
Chang Meiran stood before her husband in all her glory. A sad smile crossed her features, gazing down at her husband. A hand reached out, once again touching his cheek. She said nothing, but he did not need to hear her voice. He heard her with his heart.
"I can't...not without you."
Shaking her head, she smiled down, placing a kiss to his lips. His eyes widened at the touch. It was as if an electrical current filled his whole body. Every cell seemed to tingle with her essence. His entire body felt suffused with love and happiness.
Brushing his cheek, she stood and drifted away from him towards the window. He stood, clasping her hand in his one last time. He kissed the palm, his fingers lovingly tracing over the delicate fingers.
Tilting her head, she gazed at him and he smiled back, nodding. Drifting backwards, the sleeves of her white gown billowed outward; a strong breeze seemed to lift her up. Flower petals fell around Wufei in a whirlwind of scent and color. He closed eyes, the softness of the petals brushing his skin.
When he opened his eyes, she was gone. The only evidence that she had been there were the flower petals on the floor. He bent down, scooping up a handful. He brought them to his face, inhaling the sweet aroma.
Standing, he gazed out the window, smiling. He felt the burdens of the past few years melt away. "I will always love you. And I promise, Mei. We will be together one day. But until then..."
Placing the petals in a bowl on a table, he opened the door and went out to find his friends.
The petals swirled around the room, lifting up and depositing into the glass bowl. A whisper could be heard as the wind died down.
"Till we meet again, my love..."
/So don't let me wait, come to me tenderly in the June night.
I stand at your gate and I sing you a song in the moonlight,
A love song, my darling, a Moonlight Serenade./
