A tiny slip of the tongue….
Hi. I can't believe I am doing this. I am writing a slushy one shot. This was inspired like 5 minutes ago after reading a very sweet book. I touched me and I immediately thought of 1xR. So, here. Enjoy. Thanks to Lou for TELLING me to write it.
Oh yeah. I don't own Heero or Relena, but I do own the part of my mind that allows me to use them for my own dastardly deeds! Muahahaha!
The wind was so ghostly on that night, yet it didn't scare him. It was a soothing whistle, which could only be heard in the silence that had surrounded him at that time. Through the thin material of the tent's roof, he could see the faint shadows of the stars and the shadows of the overhung branches, looking like gentle arms trying to rock him to sleep. The silence was beautiful, and the summer was making the night warm and fresh; not in the least bit humid. It was all too wonderful……too wonderful. It couldn't last.
Heero started as she heard the shuffle of a sleeping bag beside him. He smiled, not once looking away from the star coated ceiling. His angel was beside him, sleeping as though tomorrow, nothing would happen. His heart sank at the mere thought of the word `tomorrow'. He closed his eyes and tried to close his thoughts and centre them on the breeze outside, fluently brushing its hands upon the dying flames outside.
He frowned when the thoughts wouldn't go away…then a hand brushed smoothly against his bare chest. He subconsciously caught it in his own, and the figure beside him giggled absently.
`I refuse to see the humour in this, Relena. You almost scared me.' She brought her head up to his chest and nuzzled her nose against the hard muscle there. `Oh, Heero. You worry too much.' Heero wanted to smile, but his thoughts were still on that word…”tomorrow”. Relena's giggles subsided. She tried to make the situation seem more positive, but that awful word has also cursed her own mind.
`Heero, tell me the story. The one your mother told you. I love to hear it. You tell it so…well.' She had to yawn. Although she had slept a great deal more than he, she was lacking the satisfaction sleep usually had to offer. He tried to refocus his memory to the story. Once he had grasped it, he wrapped his arms around her, and buried her head under his chin….
`Long ago, back before the people of Earth knew of the existence of the Sank, there was a harmony in the Sank Kingdom, then known as Eden. There was no prejudice in such a place. Everyone was beautiful, no matter how fat, scarred or misshapen. There was no rule. No government. No politics. No money. Everyone shared the fruits of their labour with their neighbours, and dined together under the powerful gaze of the silver moon.
`One day, the men and women by the bay were collecting in their fish for the day, when a strange creature appeared over the horizon. Thinking it was an animal friend coming home for the summer, they prepared to open the gate to the river source. When the creature came up to the gate, they stared in wonder, as the creature was none of which they had encountered before. It was made of wood, with great steel frames and its hair was sheets of a strange material suspended from three wooded arms.'
`One young girl in the group found a likeness to the creature, and climbed onto it's flat back to pet it, when she found smaller creatures, not unlike herself, on it. They were just like her. They were evidently male, but their hair was not the silver or blonde of her people, nor were their skins pale. They had tanned skins, eyes of many colours, not like her slivery blue, and their hair was the colour of the soil.
`One of them she found particularly fascinating. He was just like the others, but had an aura that made her want to throw herself into his arms….'
Relena giggled. `You sound so soppy, Heero. So come on. What did he think of her?'
`Well, when he turned around, he saw her, and he fell in love. Neither of them knew how, but they both knew that, somehow, their lives would intertwine. And they did.
`The Saknanese people kindly accepted the travellers into their homes, and taught them all they could know about Eden. The girl, Ariadrenne, took the man whom she had fallen for into her home, and found out later that his name was Daale. They shared many a night telling each other about their follies, of their traditions, cultures and experiences. A month on from that very day, they sealed their `fascination' with what both cultures called a `kiss'.
`That same night, a sad fate was brought upon the Sankanese people. The captain, though noble in appearance, had learned of the riches that dwelt in the country, and like any other man, desired such riches for his own. The people of Eden wore gold on their bodies and platinum in their hair. He wanted it. All of it. He gave the orders, and everyone in the vast city of Kallallame were slaughtered, and their adornments prised from their corpses.
`Daale was not one of the crew who were present at the time. He had gone to lake Hymn to fill the water casket for his beloved Ariadrenne. When he entered the city, the silence crept over him and a cold horrible shiver ran down his spine. The ship was not in bay. Every single Sank was lying dead on the marble floor of the city. And in by the fountain, embedded on a rusty sword, which was none other than his own, was the impaled corpse of Ariadrenne.
`He gave way to grief, knowing that he'd never see her again….his…blonde….blue eyed…'
Heero had to stop. Relena was staring at him with a heavy heart. He had realised that throughout the entire story, his image of Ariadrenne was a mirror of hers. That the ending was not as was told to him, but as he thought at the time.
She didn't let a single tear fall from her blood shot eyes, nor did he try to comfort her. They had been lucky to have their time……
The morrow came. Both had remained silent the entire morning while packing the tent and few meagre possessions they had away. The Preventers would come soon. They would take Relena back to her office, away from him.
They waited still as silent in the clearing in the forest. Never had they felt so dead. They wanted to run. They wanted to do…something.
When they heard the great roar of the chopper from the distance, Relena suddenly flew into his arms and cried. `I won't let this happen! There has to be a way , Heero! We've come too far! I love you, for God's sake, I love you!'
Heero didn't move. He just held her, head lowered, his messy mane covering his beautiful eyes.
`Relena, there is no place for me in your world. Your world would never allow it. Even in this paradise you have created, not everyone can find true happiness….. We can't. It has to end today.'
He turned to her and gripped her face in his hands.
`I'll always love you. Never doubt that. But, at the same time I want you to forget it. ……'
There was a terrible long pause as the chopper landed in the clearing.
He helped her into the chopper, and as he helped himself in he whispered into her ear.
She let that tear that she held so tight in her lid fall. The world was perfect, but will always be a hell to her.
Yet, she had her stories………
