The pain was horrible. It was a dull, terrible, agonizing feeling that lingered and
pestered. Wufei had no will to move, to think . . . In all of his years as a pilot, nothing,
NOTHING, had prepared him for this.
He had survived bloody battles, witnessed the death of children, seen his very home
blown apart in front of his eyes and somehow, by the grace of god, managed to escape every
time with a whole new aspect on life.
But this, this empty lull he was currently trapped in, drained from him everything he
thought he was, or wanted to be. His body literally hummed as if an electrical current was
being run through him.
A smooth tongue ran over dry chapped lips, swallowed the lump of bile that was
lodged in his throat. His fingers twitched but remained dormant by his hips, restrained by
padded cuffs, like his feet. He had struggled for hours, trying to jerk them free. But nothing
happened.
He was trapped. He was helpless. His whole body ached and burned as if it was being
rewired every hour on the hour. And if he wasn't so completely afraid, he would let the tears
fall again. His breath hitched softly as he tried to fight his way back into the darkness that he
had been buried under.
The battle was very short and very pathetic. Between the two of them it had taken
almost no effort at all to complete the mission. The base was thoroughly destroyed and the
two Gundams were flying off in peace. His comm. unit beeped on with a message from the
other pilot; the voice sarcastic with its pride.
"You're stronger than I expected 05."
Was this the longest amount of time that he had ever been conscious?
It had to be. His internal clock was shot all to hell from the very first time he had
opened his eyes in this pitch black room. Minutes ran into hours, hours into days. Though his
limbs twitched, he could only move them so far. Though his eyes blinked, he could see
nothing. Though he had screamed himself raw in a fit of rage, no one had come. Though he
strained his ears to listen, he could only hear the beating of his own heart. It was pure hell.
How dare they ignore him!
How dare they treat him in this manner!
When he got free, and he was going to get free, make no mistake about that, he would
show them. He would show them what real pain was. The fast, horrible kind that cracked
bones, tore muscles, and made grown men piss their skin in fear. He'd rip them apart.
He'd ...
Suddenly a noise in the background caught his attention; against all the mindless pain,
he tried to focus. He tried to concentrate. Maybe this would be his chance. Maybe now he
would get some answers. It was a smooth, heavy sound, which came from the left, like an air
shaft door hissing open.
Footsteps padded against the floor, but no light had emerged. It was still pitch black,
but at least now he could smell something. It smelled like . . . the pain inside his head became
sharper. He blinked away the tears, frozen. Why did this smell haunt him? Or did it soothe
him...
Wufei watched him move with deadly force, shooting down targets almost invisible in
this weather. The outline of his body moved like a violent force of nature, and then, when the
job was done, he stood there, face tilted up towards the sky.
Why was he feeling so much uncontrollable fear?
Why couldn't he move?
He had never been this weak...
Unexpectedly, there were fingertips brushing against his cheek, stroking tears away
from his eyes, lingering by his lips. A shudder ran down his spine and tightened already
abused muscles; whether in fear or pleasure, he did not know. It had been so long since he
had been touched... or was it that he had felt this touch before...?
He wanted to open his eyes, he wanted to rip apart the fool that thought he could break
Chang Wufei, he wanted out of this hell, he wanted
"It's time."
That voice, it was dark, and seductive, like running water falling over gravel. It was a
voice that he knew! A voice that had whispered to him many times before -
Wufei watched him come forward, covered in blood like death warmed over. Eyes so
vacant, his body so stiff, their pain was the same. It echoed through them both, connected
them in ways the other pilots could never understand. And then he had spoken ...
- A voice that caused many confused emotions to thunder inside of his heart. Why
would he forget that?
Why had he been so scared?
Of course he had come to get him...
A soft humming noise could be heard, as if a machine was being flipped on. The
constant boom-boom boom-boom that streamed forth hauntingly resonated in sync with his
heart beats. A slow and erratic light was building up behind his closed eyes even as his
temples pounded on key with a pain that danced just underneath his skin. It was driving him
crazy.
What happened to his resistance?
What happened to all those years of being mentally and physically trained to withstand
anything?
Why couldn't he stop this?
Why was he so helpless when every other time in his life he was so strong?
When every other time he had proven himself worthy to be his partner?
Wufei closed his eyes, blind to the darkness anyway, and gradually he felt so tired. He
tried to force himself to relax, to succumb willingly into his meditative state -
He'll come for me; just need to be patient; just need to be stronger.
- But the opposite was happening. The harder he tried to resist, the brighter the light
behind his eyes became. The harder it was to resist. The current was getting stronger, hotter.
More memories and thoughts of his past emerged.
Memories of him as a boy... Memories of his tutors, his mentors, his training . . .
Memories of him as a teenager... forced to deal with ruling an entire colony, to marry out of
obligation, to bear children. . . Memories of meeting Lashi O... Memories of piloting his
Gundam for the very first time... Memories of clutching his dying wife to his chest amidst a
field of flowers, never to have the family he wanted . . . Memories of meeting the other
pilots... Memories of all of the close encounters and rare moments of insanity fighting against
Oz...
Memories of knowing that he would never get the blood off his hands but watching as
he cleansed himself in the. . . Memories of his battle with Treize; watching as all of his hopes
and dreams died painfully with the death of his enemy... Memories of holding Maia close to
his heart as she cried... Memories of breaking bread with Barton... Memories of listening to
Winner play his flute... Memories of chasing Maxwell around with his sword . . . Memories of
fighting side by side with Yui!
Yui bathing in the rain... it was how he cleansed himself of the blood...
Yui holding out his hand... "Join me" ...
His heart beat stuttered, the machine went wild. His body seized as electric blue
sparks danced along his skin.
Yui drinking his green tea
Yui looking at him
Yui brushing past him
Yui passing him a screwdriver
Yui smirking at the destruction of a base
Yui sitting at his laptop
Yui cooking over a campfire
Yui watching him
Yui handing him coffee
Yui bandaging his shoulder
Yui sparring with him
The pressure building was too much. Hands gripped his body down, shouted voiceless
orders inside the dark room.
Yui running his fingers through his hair
Yui high jacking a car
Yui glaring at him
Yui holding out his hand to help him up
Yui scowling at a stupid mission plan
Yui protecting him from gunfire
Yui smirking at him
Yui arguing with him
Yui fighting with him
Yui forgiving him
Yui hunting down a stupid little white rabbit
Yui leaning against his Gundam
Bright fluorescent lights were quickly turned on, faceless bodies rushed into the room.
The door hissed open and shut, open and shut-
Yui issuing orders
Yui staring at him
Yui snickering at him covered in mud
Yui pushing him up against his office door
Yui paying for dinner
Yui kissing him
Yui combing through with his hair with his fingers
Yui nuzzling his neck
Yui nibbling on his ear
Yui growling breathlessly
Yui gripping his waist
Yui licking his lips
"I want you"
The lights behind Wufei's eyes exploded and he screamed. It was the scream of the
damned, broken, unforgiving, and heart-wrenchingly beautiful in its grief. He welcomed the
sweet, blissful cold darkness that followed. All the fight inside of him, gone.
