Play Crack the Sky

We sent out the SOS call
It was a quarter past four in the morning
When that storm broke our second anchor line

Duo Maxwell, age 22 sat in his recording studio listening to his new demo. In his opinion, this was the saddest song he'd ever written in his short life. He wondered what inspired these words to form in his head.

“Oh well, I'll figure it out later.” He said dismissively aloud to no one in particular.

Four months at sea
Four months of calm seas
To be pounded in the shallows off the tip of Montauk Point

“What the fuck is that?” Duo heard just behind him, which made him jump ten feet in the air.

“Jesus Christ Tro, what did I tell you about sneaking up on me like that?” He yelled as he turned to look at his best friend Trowa Barton with a glare darkening his amethyst eyes.

“Sorry, you're usually not very easy to sneak up on.” Trowa said as he chuckled.

“It's my demo”

“Huh?”

“Dumb ass, what I'm listening to.”

“Are you serious? Why did you write such a morbid song?”

“I don't know. I guess I've just been feeling a little morbid lately.” With that said Duo turned around to listen to his demo.

They call them rogues,
They travel fast and alone
One-hundred foot faces of God's good ocean gone wrong

“Oh Trowa, did you by any chance call those guys that we found for the guitar auditions yet?” Duo suddenly remembered that the previous week was totally dedicated to finding a new lead guitarist for their band since Jake, the previous one quit because of “personal matters”.

“I called two. I figured that you could call the other three.”

“Thanks a lot ass hole.” Duo said as he swiftly turned around again to listen to his song. “Now shut up so I can hear this.”

Trowa just snorted and sat down in the seat next to Duo in front of the recording equipment.

What they call love is a risk
Cause you'll always get hit
Out of nowhere by some wave
And end up on your own

While they sat there, Trowa noticed the way Duo was fidgeting and trying not to show it.

“I hope you're sticking to your promise Duo.” Trowa stated knowingly as he eyed the longhaired singer skeptically.

“God Dimmit Trowa, I told you I'm off the stuff and I meant it! Stop thinking I'm going to relapse ok?” Duo was really getting sick and tired of Trowa harping almost everyday about his past drug addiction.

Ever since Duo was 16, he's had a problem with drugs. It started out with a simple joint, but then escalated as he got older. He went from marijuana, to LSD, to coke, even so far as trying speed and acid. But the one that got him hooked was the coke. Since he was 19 up until about the time he was 21, he snorted, smoked, and injected the stuff everyday all day. Luckily he had met Trowa at age 20 that helped him get into rehab and get off the stuff for good. At least Trowa hoped it was for good. He was always nervous about Duo relapsing, considering the kind of life he had. In other words, not very happy.

“I don't mean to nag Duo, it's just that I know how you can be and you know I'm always here for you right?”

“Yeah I know Tro, I appreciate it.” Duo said with a smile. “Now would you please shut up?”

The hole in the hull
Defied the crew's attempts to bail us out
And flooded the engines and radio and half buried bow

Heero Yuy sat in his dirty one bedroom apartment trying, but failing to nail a chord progression he had to learn for the audition he had coming up.

“Fuck, this is hopeless.” He set down his guitar and walked to the kitchen to get himself some water.

“How the hell am I going to audition if I can't even get the damn chord progression right?” He asked the empty kitchen.

He set his glass of water on the counter and went out onto the balcony that looked over a nice view of the city below. He lit up a cigarette, took a long drag and leaned against the railing, his messy chocolate hair falling into his face.

“Heero, are you home?” A voice sounded from the front door of the apartment.

“I'm on the balcony Relena.” He said with a suffering sigh. `Man I thought she'd be home late tonight. Oh well guess I'll find something to do with her.'

“Jesus Heero, I leave you alone for one day and you trash the whole apartment.” She ranted like she'd been doing it for years.

“Just shut the hell up Relena, I've had a bad day.” He mumbled then took another drag from his cigarette.

“Heero, I thought you quit smoking.” She said as she came up behind him and put her arms around his waist.

“I never said I did.”

“Well, I wish you would, it's bad for you.”

“Yeah, well alcohol is bad for you too but I don't see you quitting that.”

“Heero, that's different. And besides, it's not like I drink all the time.”

Heero just ignored that comment. He put out his cigarette in the ashtray on the outdoor table and went inside, detaching himself from Relena's hold in the process.

“What's wrong with you today? You seem like you're not very happy to see me.” Relena stated with a hurt look on her face.

“I just have a lot to do. I have the audition coming up and I can't get the damn chord progression right. Plus I'm trying to write my own songs in the process and it's stressing me out.”

“Well, while you've been playing on your guitar, I was at work all day on my feet.”

“For God sake Relena, I'm trying to make money here, but you just have to remind me of how you have the job and I don't. Well I'm sick of it. So just shut the hell up.”

“I don't need to remind you who's paying the bills Heero.”

“You know what, I've had it.” And with a purpose in his step, Heero walked over to the closet and pulled out his duffle bag.

“What do you think you're doing?”

“Leaving”

“What do you mean leaving?”

“Exactly what I said” He starting shoving random items of clothing into the bag, and other things that belonged to him.

“Fine, go ahead and leave, I don't need you anyway.”

“Well that's a relief because I certainly don't need you.” With that said he picked up his guitar case and duffle bag and walked out the door.

You're tongue is a rudder
That steers the whole ship
Sends your words past your lips
Or keeps them safe behind your teeth

Duo was still listening to his demo as he held the phone between his ear and shoulder. He was calling the last person on the list that was going to audition for the guitar part. He didn't have to wait long. After two rings someone picked up.

“I don't want to hear it Relena, its over.”

“What?” Asked Duo looking very confused at this statement. “Who's Relena?”

“Oh shit, I'm so sorry I thought you were someone else.”

“Obviously. I'm Duo Maxwell. Is this Heero Yuy?”

“Yes”

“Oh good, I'm calling about your guitar audition.”

“Oh right, yeah, umm, how are you?” Heero could have just punched himself right in the face. How are you? How lame.

“I'm fine. I was just calling to confirm that you are coming tomorrow right?”

“Yes I'll be there.”

“Great well then I'll see you tomorrow.”

“Oh, ok, great, umm thank you for the opportunity.”

“No problem.” Duo hung up the phone and then looked at it for a minute.

`Damn, that's a really weird guy.'

But the wrong words will strand you
Come off course while you sleep
Sweep your boat out to sea
Or dashed to bits on the reef

End Chapter One
