Chapter 4 - Quiet Comforts and Soft Touches

By Angel Love

Author's notes: I did my best impression of Heero writing this cause I knew that many of you wanted to see this next chapter. I gotta thank Brenda again for giving me the wonderful idea of using one of Savage Garden's songs. It wasn't until she pointed out to me that I saw it potential. The song in question is 'Crash and Burn'. I decided to break the song up into three parts for each moment with the three pilots whom she still has to talk with. The first part will be with Q-chan! Question to you guys...should I have her talk to Duo or Trowa next. And should Wufei tell Milliardo why he needs to come back and see his sister?

Also a warning. This gets limey at the end. Not that any one here minds! But it isn't anywhere as good as WarDove's ficcies. This is just a little limey.

Standard disclaimers apply. I don't own Gundam Wing. Never will even if I offer to become the creator's personal servant. *sigh* I also don't own 'Crash and Burn' or 'Last Flight Out' by PlusOne.

And enough chatter from the insane Angel! Onward to the story!

Relena pulled out of Quatre's arms when her stomach growled. She giggled slightly embarrassed, placing a hand over her offensive tummy. "Guess I'm a bit hungry."

Quatre gave her a small smile and took her hand, pulling her out of the room. "Come on, let's get you some food, then we can talk."

~ When you feel all alone

And the world has turned its back on you ~

After Relena had eaten, with Quatre snacking a little in order not to make her feel uncomfortable, she suggested that they go out for a walk in the gardens. It was her favorite place to sort out her thoughts, and now seemed to be the place in which she would open her heart again. This garden had seen her shed so many tears, and she was sure that it would witness plenty more before her time on this Earth was over.

Relena walked quietly for a few minutes before she broke the silence between them with a heavy sigh.

~ Give me a moment please to tame your wild wild heart ~

"Do you want to talk about it, Relena?" Quatre asked, not wanting to push her. But he knew that she needed to release some of the sadness he saw in her eyes. He wanted to share some of her burden with her.

She smiled at him sadly. "Part of me does, and another part of me doesn't. It is like if I don't talk about it, it won't happen." She shrugged her shoulders. "But it is going to happen anyways. No one can cheat death, even though all of you seem to defy it on a regular basis." Her voice was filled with sadness, even as she tried to soften it with her humor.

~ I know you feel like the walls are closing in on you

It's hard to find relief and people can be so cold ~

Quatre watched her, his gaze filled with sorrow for the young girl that strolled beside him. She was a dear friend to him and he would miss her more than he could ever possibly fathom. He made a mental note to clear his schedule so that he could make sure that he would be here with her until the end, or until she kicked them out. However even then he would put up a fight to stay. He was sure that the others were feeling the same way.

Relena stopped in her favorite spot, a small smile spread across her face as she gazed at the clearing in the roses. The scent was sweet on her senses. "Heero proposed to me here," she said softly, remembering the way he held her in his arms and looking down at her with unconditional love.

~ When darkness is upon your door and you feel like you can't take anymore ~

Quatre wasn't shocked about the proposal, well he was a little. He had always known that Heero was in love with her. He felt it long before the incident when Heero fell out of Wing Zero in space, but that had just confirmed his suspicions. He was happy that the other man had finally come back to the person who held his heart. Heero needed the love that Relena freely offered.

"It wasn't quite as romantic as I hoped though," she added ruefully, when she remembered the events that lead to that proposal. She had never imagined that she would announce that she was dying and then only moments later be proposed to. Somehow that had never been in her fantasies.

~ Let me be the one you call ~

"He still hasn't said the words, has he?" Quatre asked quietly.

"No," Relena shook her head. "But I don't need them, Quatre. I know how he feels. I don't need words. They can be so empty. I just need him here now."

Quatre smiled his understanding. Relena needed Heero just as much as the pilot needed the princess. They could say more things to each other with one word than some people could ever say in their entire lives. That was their connection.

He had always known about that strange connection between Heero and Relena, witnessed it quite a few times. He would not have been surprised if Heero would have come out of hiding even if Wufei had not found him. He was sure that the other pilot would have sensed that there was something wrong with his ladylove on his own.

"I just wish I had told him how I felt sooner," she said, her voice full of melancholy. She tilted her face up to feel the breeze against her face.

~ If you jump I'll break your fall ~

"I doubt that he would have accepted it before," Quatre mused, watching a shooting star cross the sky. He would have made a wish, but he knew that nothing could make it come true. Nothing could make Relena suddenly get well.

"Heero wasn't ready to admit that he was human before, with human feelings," he continued his thought, thinking of the many times that Heero had gone on a suicide mission, knowing full well that he may not survive.

"And he is now?" she asked a little anxious, afraid that she was pushing Heero too much.

~ Lift you up and fly away with you into the night ~

"He is working on it. He would do anything for you, Relena." Quatre's blue eyes turned back to her face and held hers. He felt an overwhelming surge of protectiveness when he saw the fear on her face. "He just needed to realize that time isn't something that you should let slip away."

Again a rueful smile stole across her lips causing the fear to vanish. "Then maybe something good came out of this."

"Maybe," Quatre agreed. His heart ached at the sadness that he could still see in her eyes. Except it wasn't sadness for herself that he saw there in her azure depths. It was sadness for him, for Heero, for all of her friends. She didn't want to leave them mourning for her, he realized. And somehow that only made his heart ache more. He fought the urge to break down and scream his anguish out at the world for being so cruel.

~ If you need to fall apart ~

"Quatre," she spoke slowly, a clear indication what she was about to say was really important.

He cocked his head at her, giving her his full attention.

Relena turned to face him fully, looked up into his blue eyes and smiled softly. "I wanted you to know how special you are to me. I never would have made it through the first war if it weren't for you. I needed all of you so much then."

Quatre was slightly shocked by her statement. He had always thought that it Heero that she needed, not him or any of the other gundam pilots. Sure she had always found a way to say something kind to them all during that time, but it was always Heero that she was seeking.

~ I can mend a broken heart ~

Relena smiled again, taking his hands in her own, as if she read his thoughts she continued. "Heero was the main person who got me through that era of pain, but it was the strength that I saw in all of you that made me want to live. The friendship that you offered to me gave me hope. It made me want to obtain the peace we have now. It was a good part of the reason I became the Vice Foreign Minister. I willingly became the Dove of Peace for all of you. But I wanted to say thank you. Thank you for always being there when I needed you."

Quatre looked down at their hands, his heart heavy with guilt. "I wasn't there for you when you found out. I haven't been around a lot lately, and I am sorry, Relena. I should have made the time..."

Relena shushed him and offered him another sweet smile. "I know you were busy, Quatre. Running a colony is a lot of hard work. And you are not totally to blame for us not seeing each other. I have been rather busy myself. I could have made the time as easily as you could." She squeezed his hands. "What matters is that you are here now. That I got to tell you how much you meant to me before my time was up."

~ If you need to crash then crash and burn ~

Quatre pulled Relena into a tight hug, slightly startling her, with his sudden move. A few tears fell from his eyes at the thought of his friend leaving him. His hold on her was a little desperate, almost as if he were afraid to let her go. "I don't want you to die," he whispered in her hair.

~ You're not alone ~

"I will always be with you," she whispered back, relaxing into him, letting him hold her. Together they cried for the memories that they shared, will share in the future and the things that they would never be able to do.

When the tears slowly faded she propped her head on his shoulder and saw Heero approaching with Duo and Trowa. She pulled away and smiled softly up at him. "It doesn't matter when I leave this life, because I will always be here in your heart," she whispered putting a hand over his heart. A few more tears slipped down her checks. "I will live on through all of you. I am happy knowing that. Remember that please."

Quatre nodded at her. "I will never forget that."

By then Heero and the others had reached the two. He nodded to Quatre and took Relena's hand in his own, pulling her out of the blonde's embrace and into his own. "I was sure that I would find the two of you here."

Quatre smiled, his heart still very heavy. But he wanted to try and make it a happy time for everyone. "I hear that this is where you proposed to our dear princess." He waved a hand around the area they were standing in.

Heero surprised them all by smiling slightly. "That I did." Then he looked at Relena's face, noting that she looked a bit tired, obviously the day's events were catching up to her, despite the four hour nap that she took this afternoon. It was also evident in the way she was slightly leaning on him for support. "I think it is time for you to get some sleep."

She nodded at him, and smiled a goodnight to the others. Her eyes caught Duo's and Trowa's, promising that they would get their moments with her too. Then she let Heero led her out of the gardens and back up into the house, noticing that Wufei was nowhere in sight, she made a mental note to ask Heero about it later.

Quatre looked up at the moon and sighed a heavy sigh. "Allah, this shouldn't be happening," he whispered, his hands clenched at his side.

"I second that," Duo added, his voice uncommonly quiet. His violet eyes glazed over from pain, past and present. The God of Death didn't like his title at the moment.

Trowa just nodded his response. His eyes were on the path that Relena and Heero had just disappeared down. He felt an unknown pain in his chest. He had long since thought that he was incapable of feelings, but the young princess had taught him otherwise. And now, that same girl was being ripped away from them all. He wasn't sure how to take it.

*************************

~ I'm so scared that you will see

All the weakness inside of me ~

Heero opened the door quietly and allowed Relena to enter the room before him, his eyes taking in the tearstains and the shadows under her eyes. "How about I draw you up a bath?" he suggested softly, wanting to do anything that would bring her some small amount of comfort.

Relena looked up and gave him a grateful smile. "Thanks," she spoke quietly. She watched him walk purposefully into her bathroom, setting the bath and making sure that he checked the temperature. She watched the way he did things with such precision. She realized that he had to have most things planned out. He had to know what he was doing.

~ I'm so scared of letting go

That the pain I've hid will show ~

"This must drive you crazy," she said softly, from her position of leaning on the doorway to the bathroom.

Heero turned to look up at her, drying his hands on one of the towels. "What must drive me crazy?"

"Not knowing what to do."

~ I know you want to hear me speak

But I'm afraid that if I start to

I'll never stop ~

Heero's eyes clouded a bit as he nodded. He realized that he had to be completely honest with her now. There was no longer any time to hide behind his masks. She deserved to see what he was feeling, to hear what he was feeling. But it was hard for him to let her in completely, he had built the wall so long ago, he wasn't quite sure how to let it down.

Relena saw his internal struggle and smiled softly at him. She crossed the distance between them and wrapped her arms around him, burying her head in his chest. "The words will come when the time is right," she whispered, trying to relieve him of the stress that she saw flicker across his face. She wanted him to tell her that he loved her, but she didn't want him to force the words out.

~ I want you to know

You belong in my life ~

"I... I want to tell you, Relena," he said, holding her close to him, his eyes closed. "But it is... hard to find the words that I know you need to hear."

Relena pulled away from him, to look up into his eyes, an unexpected light shining in hers. "Then show me."

Heero cocked an eyebrow at her, confusion evident on his face. "Show you?"

~ I love the hope

I see in your eyes ~

She reached over and turned off the water, not wanting to overflow the tub. When she turned back to Heero, she gave him a small, slightly nervous smile, but that light never dimmed in her eyes. Her fingers found the hem of her blouse and pulling it over her head, revealing a soft pink lacey bra. "Show me what you can't say."

~ For you I would fly

At least I would try ~

Heero's mouth dropped open and suddenly he felt very unsure of himself. He could only stare at Relena, standing before him in her bra. He had known that she was beautiful before, but now he could not deny that she had become a woman, a woman with an incredible body.

Relena watched his face, his mask unable to hide the uncertainty he was feeling. She moved towards him, wrapping her arms around his shoulders, looking up into his gorgeous blue eyes. "If you don't want to do this, you don't have to, Heero."

~ For you I'll take

The last flight out ~

Heero shook his head. He wanted nothing more than to show Relena what he felt, but he wasn't quite sure on how to go about that. He didn't want to do something in his inexperience that would scare her away. "I've never..."

She smiled up at him, the light growing brighter in her eyes. "Neither have I. We will just follow our hearts and let them lead us to where we need to go. Okay?"

~ I'm afraid that

You will leave

As my secrets

Have been revealed

Oh ~

Heero slowly nodded.

Follow his heart.

He should have done that a long time ago, then he would never have wasted so much time and he would have had more precious moments with the love of his life. But he had to admit that he was a little afraid to bear his entire soul, demons and all, to her. However for her he was willing to do anything.

~ In my dreams

You'll always stay

(You'll always stay)

Every breathing moment from now

Oh yea ~

His fingers slowly found the zipper on her skirt, fumbling with it slightly he pulled it down, his eyes holding hers the entire time, giving him soft encouragement. The fabric slid down her legs with only a little push of his hands. He could feel the lacey material of her panties with his hands as he slid them back over her butt. He was surprised when he felt the temperature of his body rise drastically and his breathing becoming shallow.

Relena closed her eyes as she felt his tentative fingers trace back over backside. A soft moan escaping her lips when she felt his body responding to hers. She slid her hands down the front of him, fumbling slightly as she pulled his ever-present green tank top from where they were tucked inside his blue jeans, anxious to feel his bare-skin against her own.

He lifted his arms and helped her pull it over his head. He glanced over towards the bath, then decided that they would have to try that later, but for now it would be time for just them to tell each other every feeling that they have kept silent in the years that they have known each other the traditional way.

~ I know you want to hear me speak

But I'm afraid that if I start to

I'll never stop ~

Relena met his gaze understanding what he wanted the minute he looked at her. She reached over, giving him a nice view of her lace-clad rear, and pulled the plug holding in the water. Then she turned back and looked at him expectantly.

He reached out one hand, catching a hold of one of hers. He brushed a kiss across it, before he gently picked her up and carried her into the bedroom, careful not to hurt her in any way by holding her too tightly. He gently laid her down on the bed, shedding himself of his jeans, before joining her on the soft comforter.

~ I want you to know

You belong in my life ~

Relena watched him with anxious eyes. He was so beautiful, scars and all. She never imagined that he could be this good-looking. Okay, so she had dreamed about it, but her dreams paled in comparison of the real thing. Especially since in her dreams he had never looked at her with that expression. She could see the fear in his eyes, but there was also love. She felt comforted by knowing that he was just as scared as she was.

She reached up and pulled him in her arms when he joined her on the bed, capturing his lips with her own. Their lips began a slow dance, their tongues meeting again and again. Their breathing getting shallower and shallower as the need built up between them. His hands slowly moving down her body, freeing her of the rest of her clothes while she did the same with him.

~ I love the hope

I see in your eyes ~

He looked up at her a little uncertain as he trailed kisses down to her breasts. He knew that from the look on her face he must have been doing something right because he had never seen such a look of pure pleasure before. He felt his heart swell as she softly called out his name, clutching on to him as if she were afraid he was going to disappear.

Each fumbled touch and caress was ecstasy to Relena. She had never felt anything that could be so gentle and intense at the same time. Just like the man himself. She could feel her need for him building with each passing moment. But she didn't want to hurry him. She was enjoying each slow moment.

~ For you I would fly

At least I would try ~

Part of her wanted to go slow in order to give him this memory to remember for the rest of his life, but just as the thought came, she pushed it out of her mind. Now was not the time to think of her future, or lack-there-of. Right now was the time for Heero and only Heero.

She reached down and tugged on his boxers, her eyes meeting his with an unspoken plea. He quickly shed the last garment and found his way between her legs. As she nodded he slowly positioned himself to enter her.

~ For you I'll take

The last flight out ~

Slowly as one they took each other's virginities together. Relena cried out in agony as he gently broke her hymen, burying her face in his shoulder, listening to him whisper soft comforting words as he held her to him. Slowly she relaxed against him and they began to move a slow uncertain pace.

Their lovemaking was soft, slow, sweet and a little painful for their first time, but undeniably beautiful. Their bodies spoke their undeniable love to each other. Their fumbles making the other smile softly and help to fix it. Slowly they rose to the peaks together. White-hot heat soared through their bodies as they collapsed against each other, tired and exhausted, but unwilling to let the other go.

~ I cannot hold back

The truth no more

I let you wait too long

(Wait too long) ~

When Heero got enough energy he pushed himself off of her and pulled down the comforter, and climbed back into bed with her, pulling her close to his body. He let every thing else in his mind go and just concentrated on her. The way she snuggled against him, the way her hair smelled. He memorized everything about her, desperate to live in the moment.

Relena snuggled against him, her fingers gently intertwining with one of his hands. Her emotions swirled around inside of her. She didn't regret making love to Heero. Other than that she was going to have to leave him. And that thought crushed her.

"Heero," she whispered, her fingers tightening their hold on him.

"Hm?" He didn't miss the way her whole body had tensed.

~ Although it's hard and scares me so

A life without you scares me more ~

"I'm so scared," she whispered, her voice shaking. "I'm so scared to leave you."

He pulled her closer to him, his heart aching when he felt the first tear fall onto his bare chest. Her entire body began to shake with the sobs that erupted within her body, her emotions releasing themselves. A few tears slipped down his cheeks as he held her, burying his face in her hair.

~ Scares me more

Scares me more ~

"So am I, Relena. So am I," he whispered, the despair he was feeling edging its way into his voice.

As her sobs faded slowly, she relaxed against him and he realized that she had fallen asleep. He felt a pang knowing that she had cried herself to sleep. But at least now he was here. Now he could show her all of his feelings. And he knew that eventually he could tell her the words. He was already letting down the walls that surrounded his heart. And most of all he could offer her the love that she had given to him so long ago when he needed it.

~ I want you to know

You belong in my life

I love the hope

I see in your eyes ~

He continued to hold her close as he too gave into sleep. He was trying not to think of the day that would soon come when he wouldn't wake up with her next to him, because he knew that when she was gone, he would have truly lost everything.

~ For you I would fly

At least I would try

For you I'll take

The last flight out ~

To be continued...

*Angel and Quatre pop in both sobbing*

*After a few moments, Wufei pops in and glares at them*

Wufei: You weaklings, how do you expect to get the end done with the two of you sobbing?

Quatre: *sniffle* ..don't...know

Wufei: *glares at Angel* And you wrote this?!?!

Angel: *blows nose* that doesn't mean I can't cry

Wufei: *rolls his eyes* If Angel wasn't such a baby, she would thank all of you for reading and reviewing.

Angel: *blows nose again, muttering* I'll show you weakling in my next fic buddy

Wufei: *tries to ignore the threats coming from the author* And she still needs help with the medical stuff which she can't figure out on her own.

Angel: *glares at Wufei: I am seeing you in some major angst

Wufei: *starts sweating* um...we shall say goodbye for now

*disappears, dragging the sobbing Quatre and pouting Angel with him*
