PROMISES OF LOVE

Softly spoken words wafted through the young man's numbed mind on gossamer wings while his tear brimmed eyes traced the path of the drifting smoke as it made its twisting way up to the heavens, carrying with it his thoughts, his prayers to his one and only love. For a time, he stared blankly at the headstone that was the last resting place to the body, if not soul and spirit, of his dearly departed Meilan. Dimly, he recalled another time, another place. A time when promises were made so readily, promises that could not be kept... calm assurances that were ultimately as thin and breakable as glass ...

Suddenly, once more he was gazing into her beautiful onyx eyes, holding her soft, petite hands, hearing those wonderful, heartrending lies and believing them all over again...

*****

"I, Meilan, take thee, Wufei, to be my lawfully wedded husband..."

On that night, the night of their wedding, all the vows had been a lie, empty and meaningless. False words spoken aloud, but not felt with the heart. Two pairs of hostile eyes clashed, each vying for dominance. But...slowly... over the following months, something miraculous had happened. Something strange and beautiful...Hostility had gradually melted into icy tolerance... tolerance became grudging acceptance... and acceptance finally blossomed into...

Love.

"...My one true love."

In the dimly lit interior of their bedroom he felt Meilan's hand's gentle grip on his shoulder, her voice whisper-soft but filled with such fierce intensity...

"Is this a dream, Wufei? Are my feelings for you real? And what about your feelings for me?" Large eyes, held impossibly wide and sparkling with unshed tears, locked on his eyes, his unreadable face, struggling to find answers to the questions that plagued her heart. Her voice trembled with emotions held barely in check, a tidal wave of feelings demanding release.

"Is it all in my mind?"

A soft blush crept up into her cheeks and oh! How beautiful she was! Wufei ached to wrap his arms around her, to comfort her, to love her. But he could not force his body to move. He was numb, afraid.

Hesitantly, Meilan stepped closer and Wufei could just catch the intoxicating scent of her perfume. He wanted to take her into his arms...shower her with tender kisses and words of adoration, he wanted, no, needed to give her the answers that lay in his heart... but doubts screamed in his mind.

"I...I see how you look at me..." She uttered a soft self-depreciating laugh jagged, sharp. "I'm not THAT blind! But you never reach out to me...you never hold me..."

Tears, held too long in check, found their freedom as they tumbled forth from her eyes, sliding silently down her smooth cheeks. The dam had been broken. There was no turning back now. "I see it in your eyes!" She cried, "Even now, I can tell that you want me. I know you do, it's written on your face as plainly as if you had spoken it aloud! But you hold yourself aloft...like stone...you won't let yourself...feel... anything for me! Why?"

Suddenly, she flung herself at her husband, wrapping her slender arms around his waist, hiding her tear-streaked face against the blue silk of his robe, her moist cheek pressed against him. Sobs ripped through her chest, wracking her slight frame. The harsh sound of her weeping shredded Wufei's heart, but he forced his body to remain rigid, his arms uselessly at his side, hands balled into tight fists. Her tears soaked into the fabric of his robe, scalding against his skin.

"I give to you my sacred promise..."

Is this love...true love? Or is it the promise of love?

Wufei didn't know, but he wanted to hope, to believe. Taking a deep breath, his fisted hands relaxed and he found his arms moving as if on their own. Felt them slide around the shaking body of the woman he had sworn to love...protect. Closing his eyes against his own tears that threatened, Wufei lowered his head and pressed his lips softly against the silky texture of Meilan's hair.

"In sickness and in health..."

Wufei's iron control deserted him, leaving him feeling weak, helpless, and uncertain. He was crossing into new, unexplored, emotional territory without a map or even the faintest clue as how to proceed! Unseen pitfalls lurked everywhere but he plunged forward resolutely giving in to instinct and prayed that things would turn out all right in the end. He opened his mouth and tried to speak, not from his mind, but from his heart.

" I...I love you...Meilan...I do...It's just that... I ..."

Words failed him, just up and left him, just when he needed them the most. (Oh, God! I must sound like a complete IDIOT! Some scholar I am. I can't even finish one sentence...)

...I love you...

A thrill of happiness coursed through Meilan's body at those words, which she had longed to hear for so long. She released a slow shaky breath and slowly brought up one hand, sliding it into her husband's robe, splaying her fingers over his warm bronzed skin, bare flesh against bare flesh, face blazing a bright shade of crimson at her sudden boldness.

Wufei shuddered at her delicate touch as tendrils of flaming desire coursed through him with shocking intensity. His arms convulsed about the woman before him, pulling her still closer to the heat of his body. Dark eyes slid closed, lashes thick like soot against his cheek as he reveled in the new, thrilling sensations that flowed through him like molten lava. Taking a deep shuddering breath he attempted to regain some semblance of control, to halt the invisible wheels of fate that threatened to destroy them. He tried to push her away but was not very successful for his body would not listen to his mind. A small sound of hopelessness rose from his throat.

"In joy and sorrow..."

Her voice, breathy and uncertain, "What are you afraid of, Wufei?"

Meilan tried to swallow a lump that lodged in her throat, a heady mixture of fear and excitement, hope and despair which threatened to choke her, but her throat was suddenly very dry; a small pink tongue darted out, moistening her lips nervously. Raising her head she carefully brushed fevered lips against those of her husband's.

Wufei released a soft puff of breath. (Oh God, she's driving me insane! Oh, you cruel, wicked temptress! You will destroy us both!)

"I'm afraid..." he paused briefly trying to gather his scattered wits. He had to make her understand the dreams that had haunted him these last few months, the fear that clutched his heart whenever he caught himself following her with his eyes... the overpowering sense of approaching disaster... the undeniable premonition that their time was running out like sand through an hour glass. "I'm afraid that if I allow myself to fall in love with you... I will lose you..."

Again, wordlessly, Meilan laid her soft lips against his own, letting that simple gesture speak the volumes of emotion that surged through her heart. With a groan, Wufei abandoned himself to the passion that had been denied for too long, returning her feathery kisses with feverish abandon; he tasted the nectar of those soft lips and pronounced it an excellent vintage. Eagerly his tongue sought passage into the unexplored depths of her as he feed from her honeyed mouth exploring, teasing, devouring.

"In good times... and the bad..."

Strong, yet gently hands slid along her back and Wufei was fumbling blindly with the tie to her robe, his heart roaring in his ears, hands trembling with eager anticipation. But the knot did not want to let go. After a few moments of concentrate - it was difficult to think clearly with Meilan caressing his chest in slow intoxicating circles, but he managed somehow - he finally was able to undo the stubborn sash. The robe slid from her creamy shoulders and to the floor with a soft rustling sigh of silk.

Anxiety washed through Meilan, as she stood exposed and vulnerable before her husband. Nervously, she glanced up at the man before her. Her eyes lowered in embarrassment but she raised them once again with determination and met her husband's suddenly possessive gaze. A tingling thrill filled her heart, warming her down to her toes.

"I've never wanted anyone else the way that I want you right now." She breathed, "From the very first moment I saw you, I wanted you, only I was too stubborn, too proud to admit it, even to myself - too proud to allow myself to feel that way, to feel anything but scorn and distaste."

Wufei smiled gently, the barest tilting of his lips, his fingers trailing lightly along Meilan's body, the dip of her waist, the flaring curves of her hips. The woman in his arms shivered delicately, closing her eyes as barely audible moan escaping her throat.

"To laugh with you... to cry with you..."

"I've wanted you for so long." He murmured hoarsely, gripping her hips gently and pulling her against his swelling heat. This produced yet another fiery blush as the young maiden lowered her head, her long black hair sweeping along her face like a curtain. She shyly pressed a shower of light, feathery kisses against her love's exposed chest.

"Meilan..."

Wufei took her chin in his hand and eased her face up so till he was drowning in the deep, dark pools of her eyes. He lowered his head and kissed her lips again, slowly but with mounting passion, his hands flowing down the curves of her lithe body to her hips, her buttocks, fingers ghosting along her skin, leaving in their wake sizzling trails of desire. He led her to the bed, kissing her all the while as he pulled back the comforter and top sheet and lowered her down to the firm mattress.

Wufei pushed her gently back against the soft pillows. Meilan flushed and averted her eyes, suddenly shy as she became increasingly aware of the young man's gaze, which traveled slowly down the length of her body with an almost physical weight. When she finally raised her face to look into his eyes, Wufei brought up one hand and brushed his thumb softly against her lips before planting a burning string of kisses along her long neck, moving with slow deliberation down to the hollow of her throat. Hot shivers shook her body, one after another, a pulsating electrical current trapped under her heated skin.

Warm, smooth hands cupped her breasts, palms skimming over her sensitive nipples causing them to harden like taut rosy buds. Hot jolts of arousal burst through Meilan. She bit her lower lip, choking off the moans that wanted to rip past her lips. One second later, however, they were released in a sudden unchecked flood as astonishing sensations ripped through her young body as Wufei began to suckle first one breast, then the other. Meilan's insides instantly went into nuclear meltdown.

Struggling to control her ragged breathing, Meilan pressed one restraining hand against the raven-haired youth's chest. Puzzled eyes met her own, and while she thought her head would explode from all the blood that had rushed to her face in a scalding wave, she did not turn away or waver but simply demanded in low silken tones, "Take off your robe, Wufei. I want to see you."

Now it was Wufei's turn to blush, a red stain spreading rapidly over his face, even his ears flushed!

(Wow,) thought Meilan in something akin to wonder, (you look so cute when you blush, Wufei! You should definitely do it more often!)

Silently, the Chinese boy easily shrugged off the blue silk robe in a single deft moment, tossing it to the floor where it landed in an indifferent heap, his glowing eyes never leaving hers.

Now it was Meilan's turn to dine on the exquisite beauty that lay revealed before her eyes. And what a feast it was! Carefully propping herself up on her elbow, the oriental bride gazed at the handsome spectacle that was her husband. Coal black eyes lingered here, strayed there, taking in the planes, curves and angles of her husband's muscular body slowly but with relish. When her eyes had finally had their fill, she settled back against the pillows.

"I've waited a long time to be with you like this." Meilan whispered, an open invitation burning in her luminous eyes.

Wufei rolled on top of her with a throaty growl, kissing her, his hands stroking her face, her arms, the flair of her hips, her pale thighs, enjoying the smooth, firm texture of her skin, tracing the pads of his fingers along sinewy muscles draped in velvety skin. Meilan tensed for a moment, then slowly relaxed and allowed her beloved to slide his smooth hands between her legs, opening her up wider to his careful exploration, touching her core being, her most intimate self. She gasped sharply as one finger delicately caressed where none had ever touched before.

"To love and cherish you..."

Wufei searched his wife's eyes carefully as he positioned himself between her legs, nibbling his lower lip nervously. He didn't want to hurt her... An imperceptible nod and a small quirking smile answered his questioning gaze. Slowly, the Chinese boy pressed against her, into her until he reached her barrier. Meilan's eyes closed as she tried to prepare herself for what she knew must come and again she gave the smallest of nods indicating that she was ready, or at least as ready as she was likely to get.

Pain flared bright and intense as Wufei plunged deeply into his bride's taut body, shattering her fragile innocence. Her small sobbing cry and the tears that leaked from under closed lids clawed at his painfully beating heart. Her lovely face clenched in pain for what seemed an eternity. Gradually the pinched expression eased, fading away with the pain. Her eyes opened, crystalline droplets clinging to her sooty lashes.

Wufei kissed away the salty drops and gazed down at Meilan with smoldering passion. Then he was moving above her, inside her, slowly at first then faster and faster as her body adjusted to his penetrations. Gradually her body began to move on its own, in time with his as she learned to match his rhythms with her own. Soon she was eagerly rising to greet each thrust as their bodies, hearts and souls fused together becoming one entity, one spirit. Now and forever. Amazing sensations shot through her entire body as the tempo of their loving escalated sending them to a dizzying plateau of ecstasy untapped before this night.

Wufei called out his wife's name again, and again as he moved inside her. Sweat beaded his face, slicked his bronze skin. He was so close, so close to that perfect bliss, but he held himself in check, as his young sweetheart helplessly tossed her head back and forth against the soft pillows, waiting for Meilan to grasp her first taste of pleasure and make it her own. Suddenly, with a rising cry, she called out Wufei's name, her back arching up off of the bed, hands digging furrows into the rumpled sheets as she was carried to the very brink of desire, to a shimmering world of pleasure so intense it was almost painful. Abandoning all control, Wufei easily pushed her over that threshold and plunged with her over the edge of the world.

Afterwards, as their heartbeats and breathing slowed, they lay together, a tangle of arms and legs, their shuddering gasps the only sounds filling the dark room Wufei stroked Meilan's long damp locks from her face and kissed the tip of her nose. He withdrew then, pulling her into the circle of his arms, nuzzling her neck softly. Meilan winced faintly as she settled more comfortable against her love, knitting her fingers together with his.

"I hurt you." Wufei murmured, deeply regretting having caused his lady wife any discomfort. He trailed ghostly kisses down the side of her throat apologetically. "I'm so sorry."

"Don't be." Meilan's voice was content and sleepy. "It was worth any amount of pain."

"Oh. Really?" Smiling Wufei drew the covers up around his chin and closed his eyes. Silence reined for a time, then softly, "Meilan?"

"Yes, `Fei?" Her voice was blurry, distant as she slipped deeper towards the mystery that was sleep.

"I love you."

Then suddenly, as he opened his eyes and gazed into his wife's sweet face, feelings of terrible dread, or utter desolation and lose swept over him, sucking him into its cold clutches. The back of his eyes pricked as tears threatened and suddenly he knew, with 100% certainty that he would lose her. He didn't know when or how or even why, but there was no disputing this dark premonition. Protectively he clutched the drowsing Meilan to him. She moaned and stirred uncomfortably, surfacing briefly.

"Wufei... What's wrong?"

"Promise me that you'll never leave me..."

"Wufei, you silly...I'm not going anywhere...I love you... Now go to sleep..."

"Promise?"

"Cross my heart and hope to die."

Silent tears streamed down Wufei's face as he held his sleeping wife in his arms. He himself actually fell asleep before his tears stopped. Finally the only sounds were the soft pull and release of their lungs and the ticking of the wall clock, which mechanically ticked away what little time remained for the young sleeping couple...

"For as long as we both shall live..."
