Rainy Day Man

Author's notes: This was my first Gundam Wing fic and was greatly inspired by 'False Engagements' by Guardian Kysra. This is based after Endless Waltz and the song used is from Sailor Moon, called Rainy Day Man.

Standard disclaimers apply: I don't own Gundam Wing and I don't own Rainy Day Man.

Relena was sitting quietly in her office, staring out the window watching the rain gracefully slide down in patterns on the smooth glass. Her hair was pulled back off of the base of her neck by a blue bow and she wore a soft matching suit. Her face was relaxed, her eyes slightly glazed over.

Her thoughts were wandering over the past year. She couldn't believe how much had changed and how much she still wanted to change.

Shaking her head to clear it from her distracting thoughts, she looked down at her calendar and smiled softly. She only had one meeting for the rest of the day, but she could easily cancel that. It was much easier to cancel appointments since peace had finally settled and the people were much more involved.

Her eyes drifted back to the window, a soft look claiming her delicate features, making her look much younger. "It is time that I went to see him. It has been a while," she wistfully said.

She called to her secretary, canceling the appointment, then pulled on a raincoat and grabbed her purse, leaving her office behind to hurry home. She wanted to be in something a bit more comfortable and warm than her usual business attire. Her face flushed slightly at the thought of seeing him.

As she walked in to her house, Pagan, her loyal servant and friend, greeted her. "Miss Relena, you are home early."

Relena smiled brightly, "I had better things to do than be coped up in that office all day."

"Does that mean you are going to tell him?" a voice came from behind her.

Relena turned to see Hilde leaning against the wall, looking very smug. The blond politician smiled a greeting, then beckoned Hilde to follow her upstairs. Her thoughts already drifting back over the past year again, as a grin pulled at her lips.

Relena was walking with Heero, her arm intertwined with his. She smiled lovingly at him, noting the serious look in his eyes.

She was just about to question him, when she felt a cold drop land on her bare arm. She looked up to see that it was just starting to sprinkle.

~ Rainy Day
Rainy Day
Rainy Day ~

With a giggle, she let go of Heero's arm to dance around a little in the soft drizzle. For once, she felt completely happy. She had finally started to obtained peace, she still had to deal with a few stupid people who still wished to fight, but it was much easier now that almost three years had past since the Dekim Barton incident. (For some reason I find it easier to blame him, since he was the one to mess with the sweet little girl's head ^_^)

And she had Heero. As her thoughts turned to him, she looked over to him, her smiling face slightly red from her childish fun. The smile fell from her face as her eyes took in his face. He wasn't happy.

"Heero?" her soft voice called out to him.

Heero turned his cold Prussian eyes to her. "..."

Immediately a chill went up Relena's spine. He hadn't treated her like this since they had finally admitted their feelings to each other six months ago. "Heero..." her voice filled with dread, her stomach twisting in knots.

"I can't do this, Relena," his cold voice answered back.

Relena grabbed his arm, just to have him jerk it away from her. "What's wrong? What can't you do?" Her mind fumbled over anything that she could have done to upset him.

"I can't be with you," his cold voice killing her slowly inside with its iciness.

She grabbed his arm again in desperation, her eyes pleading with him to make her understand. " why? Why can't you be with me? I thought you loved me."

When he turned his head away, she felt the first tear fall. "You told me that you loved me and you would never leave me," her voice barely above a whisper.

Heero turned his cold eyes back to her, his mask firmly in place. "I lied."

Relena's eyes went wide as he turned and walked away, leaving her alone in the now pouring rain. She slowly sank to her knees, silent sobs ranking her body as she felt her world crumble all around her. "He lied to me..." she kept repeating over and over.

On your shoulder I cried

Rainy day, rainy day man ~

Trowa was quietly walking through the park, oblivious to the rain that was falling on his shoulders. He was enjoying the peace that settled over him since the end of the war. Life was finally good for him.

His intense green eyes looked up suddenly. He wasn't sure what made him go on alert, but something in the air made him uneasy. He scanned the area around him, finally spotting the huddled form of a girl in the middle of a pathway.

He looked closer to see her honey-colored hair covering her body and green sundress in clumps. Her slim form was shaking.

Concern pulled at Trowa as he slowly approached the form. He couldn't understand why anyone would be out here crying in a rainstorm.

His mouth dropped open as he realized it was Relena sobbing on the ground. He had never seen her cry before. She was always so strong.

He glanced around, searching for Heero, her ever-present bodyguard and boyfriend. He was alarmed when he couldn't see him anywhere.

He gently kneeled in front of her, tentatively putting hand on her shoulder, causing her to look up at him in alarm.

Relena's eyes widened when they met those of Trowa's. Her first instinct was to run. She didn't want anyone to see her in this moment of weakness. She didn't want anyone to know that Heero had coldly rejected her after months of lying to her. She didn't want anyone to see her pain.

Trowa saw the sudden panic cross over Relena's features. His eyes narrowed. "Where is Heero?"

At the mention of Heero's name, Relena's eyes filled up again with tears. She looked away in a vain effort to hide them from him, her arms crossing over herself in an effort to stop the trembling.

Trowa's gut twisted as he saw her misery, knowing that some how Heero was responsible for this. He suddenly had a strong urge to hurt the pilot of 01. He gently pulled Relena into his arms, letting her sob against his already soaked chest. Trying to offer her a little comfort.

From the distance in the trees stood a stoic form. His heart ached as he watched the young girl take comfort in the other man. He briefly closed his eyes against his emotions, then turned and walked away from his princess, knowing that Trowa would take care of her. He didn't notice that tears of his own fell down his face, mixing with the rain.

~ Ever since I can remember (remember)
Just like a brother you've strong and true
Always been the one to see me through ~

Trowa saw the movement out of the corner of his eyes. He turned his head to see the dark shadow disappear out of the park. He knew that the shadow belonged to Heero.

The Heavyarms pilot closed his eyes, knowing the hurt that Relena must be going through. He gently eased his arm under her legs, and in one fluid motion rose with her tucked carefully in his arms. Then he turned and headed back in the direction of the circus.

When they reached the trailer that he and Catherine shared Relena had calmed down and was now resting her head against his chest, staring into space. Absently clinging to the front of his shirt.

Trowa opened the door, revealing a small, but cozy living space. He noted that Cathy wasn't anywhere around. He silently thanked that for he didn't want to explain why he was carrying the soaking wet Vice Foreign Minister in his arms. Speaking of wet, he needed to get them both into some dry clothes. He didn't want Relena to get sick as well as heartbroken.

He gently set her down on the small couch, walking back to where his bedroom was, changing his clothes quickly, and then went about finding some dry clothes that would fit Relena.

He walked back out to find her staring at the window, watching the downpour. He noticed how dull and lifeless her blue eyes suddenly seemed. Again he had to fight the urge to hunt Heero down and beat the crap out of him. He shook his head, knowing that he was needed here now, he would deal with the other pilot later.

"Relena..." his voice soft and soothing.

Relena turned her vacant blue eyes to him, her mind trying to figure out why Trowa was helping her. She didn't know him that well, she didn't even know if Trowa even liked her.

He held out a pair of dry clothes. With a small smile she accepted them, then followed his directions towards the small bathroom. She would be glad to get out of her wet clothes.

Several weeks later:

Relena sat in her office, picking at her salad. She was still having trouble dealing with the fact that Heero had left her. He confused her even further by continuing to be her bodyguard. She often saw him when she was attending social functions, though his eyes would never meet hers. And he avoided any attempt she made to try to talk to him. It was frustrating to no end.

She was supposed to attend another ball that night. It was being held to celebrate the third anniversary since the last day of fighting. Many important people were going to be there.

But Relena didn't want to attend. She had pushed so hard for peace to obtain it for Heero. But now she no longer held him, she felt empty. She felt lost.

She pushed the uneaten salad away as she heard a knock on the door.

"Come in..." her voice called out.

The door opened to reveal Trowa, wearing his usual turtleneck and jeans. In his hands he held a single pink carnation. He flashed her a small smile, noting the surprised look on her face.

"Trowa..." Relena felt the first real smile in several weeks come across her lips. "What are you doing here?"

Trowa walked over to lean up against the side of her desk, holding out the small flower to her. Smiling a little wider when she took it and held it up to her nose. "I was wondering if you had a date for the ball tonight."

Relena's smile faded and she looked away. "No, I was going to skip it." Her face lost all brightness as the words left her mouth.

Trowa narrowed his eyes, again wishing to hurt the suicidal pilot. He tucked his finger under her chin, gently forcing her to face him. "Don't hide from him, Relena. He isn't worth it."

Relena forced a small smile. A single tear falling down her cheek as she struggled to maintain control of her emotions.

Trowa gently wiped the tear from her cheek. "Come with me," he said, surprising her.

"Don't you have a date?" Relena asked. She couldn't believe that Trowa wouldn't have a date, he was handsome enough to have any woman that he wanted.

He shook his head, so Relena nodded that she would go with him. She knew that the day Heero left was one of the worst in her life, but she had gained a friend in Trowa.

~ Always been the one to see me through ~

From that day on, Trowa would show up unexpectedly whenever Relena was feeling low and take her out. And always with a single pink carnation.

Relena felt grateful to have him. Trowa never judged her; he only listened as she poured her heart out. He was the only one that she ever let her see cry, the only one she ever let know just how much she was hurting inside.

In fact she had dubbed him her 'Rainy day man.'

Trowa was seen with her at many of the social events and in private. They developed such a close relationship that had many people wondering if they were a couple.

One month ago:

Trowa realized that he had fallen in love with Relena. He enjoyed everything about her. But he didn't know if she was ready to have that kind of relationship with anyone. He wasn't willing to push her, to push her would be to lose her.

Relena was coming to the circus that day, with Hilde accompanying her. They watched with baited breath for Trowa to come out with Catherine. For Hilde told Relena about the knife-throwing act. Hilde remembered it from during the war. But she had heard that it had greatly improved since then.

Hilde noticed that Relena about to fall off her bench when Trowa came out in his clown pants and suspenders, showing off his well-muscled chest and arms. A sly smile slid across her face when she realized what was happening to her friend.

Relena couldn't help but stare. It wasn't the first time that she noticed how handsome he was. But now she couldn't deny the blush that spread across her cheeks or the feelings that were spreading through her chest as she watched Catherine throw knives at him.

When the circus was over, Relena and Hilde walked out towards the back of the circus where they knew they would find Trowa and Catherine.

Relena stopped in her tracks when she saw Trowa crouching down petting a lion on the head. Her heart flipped over in her chest as he turned his emerald eyes in her direction, a peaceful look on his face.

Hilde smiled knowingly, then dragged Catherine to a spot where they could watch the blossoming romance without the couple's knowledge.

Trowa smiled softly at Relena as she came forward. His arms ached to hold her; his lips wanted to kiss her. He wanted to make her his. He wanted to erase Heero's betrayal from her mind.

Relena walked towards in him, almost in a trance. She didn't know what was pulling her to him, but she knew it would not be denied. She stopped mere inches away from Trowa, raising her hand to trace over the muscles in his chest, never taking her eyes away from his.

Trowa gasped and trembled at her touch, surprised by her bold move. His arms encircled her small waist bringing her snuggly against him. He was slowly lowering his head when...

A loud noise broke the couple apart. Hilde had accidentally knocked over a pail as she and Catherine were leaning forward, holding their breaths, waiting to see the couple share their first kiss.

The couple jumped and looked towards the sound. Hilde yelped as Catherine pulled on her sleeve trying to escape her brother's wrath. Both running as fast as they could out of the area.

Trowa chuckled at the site of the fleeing girls. His arms coming around Relena again. His eyes closing as he gently tucked her curves against his, breathing in her scent.

Relena sighed as she leaned against Trowa's hard muscular chest, reveling in his warmth. Her breath caught in her throat as her eyes met the Prussian blue of her former love.

Trowa looked up startled when Relena pulled out of his arms. He saw Heero standing there. His heart plummeted when Relena took a few steps in Heero's direction.

Relena wanted to reach out to Heero. She saw something unexplainable in his face. But she didn't want to leave Trowa. She turned back to look at him helplessly. Searching him for the right decision.

Trowa shook his head, looking away from her, staring hard at Heero, daring the other man to make the first move.

Heero nodded his head at his fellow pilot, then turned on his heel and walked away. Trowa knew then what the other pilot was doing and how he felt.

Relena made a strangled sound as she watched Heero once again walk out on her. Her eyes fell to her feet, as she felt a hand on her shoulder.

Trowa's soft voice filled her ears, holding a hint of pain and sadness. "You need to decide what you want Relena."

She turned to took up into his impassive face, searching.

"Either live in the past and pine for Yuy," his intense green eyes held hers. "Or live in the future with me." Before she could say a word Trowa turned on his heel and left her alone with the lions.

A single tear trickled down Relena's face as she pulled herself back to the present. She had finally decided what she was going to do. She finally decided who she wanted her life with.

She and Hilde walked into her room. The young politician turned a bright smile to her friend, "Yes, I'm going to tell him," she answered her friend's earlier question.

Hilde squealed and threw her arms around Relena. "I am so glad. You deserve to be happy."

Relena pulled away to open the doors to her closet, revealing massive amounts of clothes. "Now what do I wear?"

Hilde hopped over and started rifling through the other girl's clothes, causing Relena to start giggling. She always enjoyed Hilde's enthusasiam.

She was finally going to make things right with her life. She pictured the serious face and intense eyes of the man she loved. "Yes, things are going to be a lot better," she said softly to herself.

Trowa was once again feeding the lions, when he heard a noise behind him. He turned quickly to see who was invading his quiet time. He was never one to like to socialize, but since the day he left Relena standing alone here he had kept more to himself. His mouth dropped open when he saw just who was standing there, his eyes roaming over the figure, greedily drinking in the sight.

Relena stood quietly under his gaze. She wore a black tight sweater that ended just above her belly button, exposing the soft flesh for all to see. She was clad in a pair of blue jeans that hugged her curves like a second skin. Her long hair hung loosely, to sway gently with the breeze that blew through the area. Her face held a small amount of make-up, not much, just enough to bring out her beauty.

She smiled up at him. "I made my choice," she said softly, holding out her hand to him, clearing telling him who she wanted.

Trowa's mouth again dropped. He was sure that he had lost Relena. He slowly stepped forward taking her hand in his, pulling her to him. He cupped her cheek, marveling at how soft and silky her skin was under his fingers.

Relena leaned into his hand, her eyes fluttering closed. "I'm sorry that it took my so long to realize that I was in love with my 'Rainy Day Man'."

Trowa's breath caught in his throat at her words, his heart swelling in his chest. He gently brushed his lips across hers. "I love you too." Then he claimed her lips for passionate kiss.

Crouching in the shadows not far from the couple were two young men. The violet eyed one turned to his companion. "It seems that they have found each other just like you wanted."

The other nodded, not noticing the tear that slipped from his Prussian blue eyes. He just felt the ache in his heart, an ache that only she had filled.

"You love her," the braided man commented. When the other didn't respond, he continued. "Then why did you let her go if you love her?"

"I couldn't protect her and love her at the same time," his once monotone voice laced with sadness. "Let's leave them alone, Duo," turning to leave.

Duo nodded his head, turning to follow Heero out. He looked one last time over his shoulder, still wondering why Heero would give up such an incredible woman. To his surprise Heero answered his thoughts. "I will always love her, but her life was leading somewhere else." He too looked over his shoulder. "I couldn't give her what she needed, Trowa can do that. And now I can protect her without any distractions."

Duo laid a hand on Heero's shoulders and together they walked out.

Trowa smiled down at Relena, grateful that she had come to him. For he knew that he would lead a very lonely life without her.

Relena smiled back before resting her head against Trowa, catching sight of the two disappearing men. She smiled sadly when she realized who they were. She would always love Heero, but now she belonged with Trowa.
