Chapter two
That woman was so familiar. Where had he seen her before?
Duo lay in his bed wide awake thinking about what had happened just three days ago. It was nearly 1:00 in the morning but he hadn't been sleeping well lately. His mind was too busy to sleep. Thousands of questions swam around in his mind begging to be answered.
"Maybe if I went and talked to them again it would help…but for now better get a little sleep at least. I got an appointment tomorrow with heero and he'll be pissed if I'm not in perfect shape…" duo mumbled to himself mentally cursing heero for being so high-strung all the time.
Sleep had not come as easily as duo wanted it too and he found himself looking out the window to see the sun rising, slowly chasing away the shadows of his room. Duo hated the sun rise. He liked the dark. Where he felt safe from anyone trying to invade his comfort zone. However, that did not stop the light from stretching farther across his room and up to warm his face in the early hours of the morning.
Giving up on sleeping, duo got up and took a shower and was careful not to get his hair wet because he wouldn't have time to dry it. Can't be late with heero. He learned that the hard way when he showed up 10 minutes late to a school orientation once.
So, to avoid the wrath of a certain perfect soldier, duo quickly grabbed a bite and rushed out the door. Even though he had not slept, he was somehow running behind schedule. Again.
"In a rush again I see. When are you going to learn how to be on time Daniel?" asked the door clerk referring to duo.
His comrades had disapproved of duo staying in such a populated hotel but he had done it anyways. What harm could it be? He was using a different name wasn't he? Besides, the hotel was in a very convenient location. Right smack dab in the middle of town. There was no problem.
"Well you know what they say, can't teach an old dog new tricks." Duo replied quickly rushing past the man out the door. Any other day, he might of argued that he knew perfectly well how to be on time, but right now time was something he only had 5 minutes of to get to their meeting place.
Duo broke into a jog as he saw the small, secluded café steadily getting closer. All five gundam pilots were supposed to be there for whatever reason heero had. The café was a little out of the way and seemed to have a low budget, but that didn't bother duo. As long as they had food remotely edible, he would be just fine.
The bell at the top of the door chimed as duo stepped into the small restaurant. The place was decorated to some sort of cowboy theme or something. It had a stuffed buffalo head on the wall and lasso type things positioned everywhere. Let's just say it didn't exactly strike duo as a place heero would pick to go.
"Are you alone or is your party already here?" asked a waitress smiling from behind the counter.
"Oh, yes I'm here with a party called heero."
"Right this way sir." Said the waitress picking up an extra menu.
Duo followed the waitress and immediately spotted the group he was looking for. Most likely because they were all staring at him. "Is there something I can get you to drink?" the waitress asked. Duo saw a small rectangular pin on her outfit that read: Miko.
"Sure, I'll have a root beer."
The waitress wrote his request down on her little pad of paper, smiled and walked off. Duo took a seat next to Wufei who looked like he would really love to hurt some one or something. "Explain why you are late." Heero said. "Just overslept a little that's all." Duo lied.
Quickly changing the subject, he added, "So, why'd you call us here?"
Accepting duo's pitiful excuse, heero nodded and began explaining. "I decided to hold this meeting to discuss certain security glitches that need to be worked out.-" duo slouched in his chair and let out a sigh.
It was going to be a long breakfest. Heero always overreacted to the smallest things. At least according to duo. Not that he'd want to share his beliefs with the perfect soldier or anything but, the war was over. Anyone who was going to try to disrupt the peace now would most likely be an idiotic amateur that didn't know what the hell he was doing.
"-therefore, we are going to be going through all of our past files at the preventers office starting Monday. I will require you to give a full report on any mishaps that occurred in the file and why they occurred in the first place." Heero finished studying the faces of the people he considered the closest things he had to friends. Trowa simply nodded at the new job he was provided with, and quatre did not object but gave an understanding nod. Wufei's face had not changed, but if he did not agree, heero would've been hearing about it right now. Finally heero's gaze settled on duo, who looked bored, tired, and distracted. Frowning, heero said, "Duo, I need to speak with you outside."
Duo was startled by this, but then realized it's all you can expect from heero yuy. He got up and headed for the door while heero walked a few feet behind him. Stepping through the door, the little bell chimed again and heero gave it the hardest of glares. Its kind of hard to get into places unnoticed when they have a fricken cow tracker hanging on everything you had to move.
"So, what did you need to talk to me about?" duo asked, trying to sound as casual as possible. However, he knew it wouldn't work. Heero knew them all too well to be deceived by that act.
"You're doing the talking. Give me a report on why your distracted and sleep deprived." Heero stated.
"Oh it's nothing really. I'm just worried that I'll have a typo on my reports." Duo replied sarcastically. There was no way in hell that he was going to tell heero about his curiosities. He'd just be told that he was wasting his time and creating distractions for himself.
"Duo. Explain." Heero's voice came out cold and sharp though his face did not change at all. Duo was keeping something from all of them and obviously it was something important since it was making him so distracted.
"Just lay off. It's none of your business anyway!" duo snapped. He felt a little bad for snapping. It wasn't heero's fault that he wasn't getting enough sleep.
"You're tired, distracted, and pissed off about it. That makes it my business. Now explain. Or would you rather I inject you with truth serum to get it out of you." Heero bit back.
"I told you its nothing. I've just got my mind on some street urchins I met the other day okay?!" duo replied angrily, knowing that it was no empty threat. He was sure heero carried that stuff around with him along with a few guns in various places. God know where he keeps them…
"I see. And you are planning to go see them again correct." Heero asked in a less harsh voice. He knew that duo's past had scarred the boy to the bone and it was not the kind of thing to hassle duo about unless you wanted a broken jaw.
"Yeah. Why do you care?" duo asked a bit skeptically. One moment heero was pissed, the next he was fine and talking normal. What the hell was he planning?
"I'm going to accompany you." Heero stated. He would see what the problem was, then solve it so that his partner could get back to work as soon as possible.
"Huh?-no way! I don't need anyone to come with me thanks." Duo said. Now he was utterly confused.
"Deal with it. Where is the location of their home." Heero asked. Ignoring duos annoyed looks.
Sighing, duo pointed down the road to the south and started to walk in the direction of the old broken down church.
"Good. Lets go." Heero stated following duo. He would get rid of this problem if it killed him…
To be continued…
