I'm stepping out of my comfort zone here with this one. To be honest, this is my first GW fic, and I'm positive I didn't get Duo right. So, don't hate me. Anyways....
I left this so that it could go either way, as a one shot, or it could move on to be multi-chapter. I'm not really sure yet because this is my first GW fic, I want to see what people have to say first.
With that said, enjoy guys!

After Colony 196.
The war is over, the Mariemaia incident has been successfully resolved, and once more, peace reigns in the colonies and on earth. The alliance remains in power. Duo, Wufei and Trowa have joined the preventers. Trowa still travels with the circus during the time between missions, or visits Quatre.
Wufei and Duo both have their own separate lives outside of the preventers. Wufei spends his time reading, or enjoying his ancestor's literature, and practicing his swordsmanship.
Duo, on the other hand spends his time looking for Heero. Ever since the war ended, Heero hasn't been seen. No one was sure where Heero had gone. He had gone off the grid, making himself scarce. Heero hadn't used any credits, or anything to identify him. No video camera had caught him either.
Duo was frustrated by this. In the end, he'd been forced to seek out Quatre's help. With Quatre's money and man power, they had managed to cast a bigger, wider net in search of Heero.
Now, a little over a year had passed when Duo finally received a call from Quatre. Heero was quick to answer when he saw who it was. Opening up his screen to Quatre, Duo asked anxiously "Any news Quatre? Did you find Heero?" Quatre, now the CEO and in charge of Winner Enterprises, nodded his head. Quatre had been the only one to actively seek out a role besides Preventers that was in the public eye. Quatre said "You won't like this Duo, but we've finally found him."
Duo clenched his jaw, this couldn't be good. Whenever Quatre said 'You won't like this' or something along those lines, he knew that it was never good. Duo said "I gotta know Quat." Quatre nodded his head and said "He's in New York City. Apparently, after the Mariemaia incident, he left to make amends with people he felt that he owed revenge to, and he was prepared to accept their punishment." Duo grinned and said "That sounds like him." Duo looked wistful before he finally said "Perfect Soldier, huh?" Quatre cleared his throat and Duo blushed at Quatre's knowing smile.
Duo said irritably "And?" Quatre's smile slipped into a frown "Duo, when Doctor J was training Heero, he implemented a set of programmed instructions into Heero. He had four programs ingrained into Heero. Program One: Doctor J's orders are absolute. Program Two: The completion of the mission takes priority over everything else. Program Three: Don't let personal emotions affect the mission. His final Program.... Program Four. We're not really sure what it was, but we can guess. It's called 'End of War' that's all Doctor J left in his notes."
Duo frowned and said "So basically, program one said that Heero had to listen to Doctor J no matter what? Like when Doctor J said jump, Heero would jump as high as he could?" Quatre nodded in confirmation before Duo continued "Programs two and three I understand because that's what Heero preached a lot. Mission first and everything else later." Duo frowned and said "I just don't get End of War." Quatre hesitated and said "I think he's executing that now Duo. He's making amends with certain people....... and then he has to execute the last part of the program."
Duo snarled, getting impatient "Dammit Quat! Stop beating around the damn bush and tell me already!" Quatre sighed and said "This is only speculation Duo, but we think the final part of the program is to Terminate the program." Duo blinked and said "Terminate?" Quatre confirmed "Terminate program. Terminate the Perfect Soldier." Duo let out a gasp "He's going to kill himself?” Quatre nodded in confirmation. "At least, that's what we think that he's going to do." Duo was angry. He snapped "Why? Why the hell would doctor J do that to Heero? Heero did everything he was told! Heero doesn't have to follow the fucking program any more! J is dead!"
Quatre interrupted "Duo, Heero spent most of his life training and being the Perfect Soldier. Fighting is all he knows. Missions are the only thing he's ever had to live for. That, and the hope for peace. Now that we have a stable world, his programming has come to an end and he has no reason to exist anymore. He can't lay down weapons he's held in his hands for most of his life." Duo got to his feet and said "I gotta find him Quat. Stop him if I can." Quat nodded and said "Alright." Duo said as he pulled his Preventer's jacket on "Send me his coordinate Quat, and I'll get to him as fast as I can. Duo out." Duo powered down his computer and left his office at the Preventers. As he left, he left a message on Lady Une's machine, letting her know that he was taking some time off. He told her he'd be back in about a week or so. Well, that's what he hoped anyways, but he didn't tell her that. It was less than a minute after he hung up with Une that he received Heero's coordinates from Quatre.
Duo stopped briefly at his apartment, grabbing a packed duffel bag he kept in case of emergencies. Duo shed his Preventer's jacket and switched it for a plain black one. Shinigami still had a fondness for black after all. He just wore blue jeans nowadays instead of black slacks. His shirt was a black buttoned down he kept tucked in.
Duo took off then, cursing Heero under his breath as he locked up his apartment. He had to catch a plane; he had to get a ride to where Heero was in the city....
When Duo arrived at the airport, he was surprised to learn that he already had his plane ticket ready, and was waved through, gun and all on 'Official Preventer Business'. Duo wasn't surprised that Quatre was the main reason he was being waved through so quickly. Rather, he should have expected Quatre to come through for him on this one. Duo also reminded himself to thank Quatre for the help after he took care of Heero.
The plane ride was uneventful, and everything went smoothly. Duo chatted up the stewardesses, he flirted with the woman next to him, and when it was time to go. Duo left in a hurry. He was again surprised by the ride waiting for him thanks to 'Master Quatre'. Duo was antsy the whole car ride, and the minute the car came to a stop at Heero's last known location, Duo got out of the car, duffel bag on his back. Thanking the man, Duo surveyed his surroundings.
They were in the ghettos of New York City, that much Duo knew. The rotting, decaying buildings and the smell of putrid trash in the air made that clear. The drug dealers doing their deals on the corner helped as well.
"Hey honey! Wanna have some fun?" A few ladies of the night called, giving him their best 'come and get me' look. Another girl called "Yeah! We'll give you a discount!" Duo shook his head and said with a grin "Sorry ladies~! I'm taken!" Duo waved and entered the apartment building in front of him. Now to find one that seemed most 'Heero friendly'.......
------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------
"Mission complete. Program.........Fifty Percent complete."
Heero sat on the ratty couch he'd found in the room when he first rented it. On the rickety table in front of him was his beloved GLock in its' shoulder holster. He had to draw it one last time. Heero reached out with steady hands and drew his GLock 9 milimeter. He looked down at the gun in his hand there had to be a final gun check before he wouldn't need the gun anymore. Checking the cartridge one last time, he loaded a new clip and after making sure the gun worked, he slowly raised the gun to his head.
This was the final part of program that Doctor J had implanted into him since training began. End of War called for the End of the perfect soldier. Someone like him, bred and raised solely for war had no place in this new world of peace, which was why Doctor J had implemented the program. Heero had been allowed to make amends for people he felt he needed to apologize too before he executed himself.
The decision was a logical one. Heero was a liability in this new world of peace, a threat. He had to be eliminated to ensure that in case of future events, he didn't need to be eliminated by one of his fellow pilots, which would be damn near impossible for them since he was built to be superior in strength and capabilities than the other pilots. Duo was the only one Heero thought was capable of defeating him if such an unlikely scenario happened. Heero told himself "Unacceptable."
Just as Heero pulled the trigger, he said aloud to no one "Mission.....complete."
BANG!
Blood pooled on the ground, but Heero realized he wasn't dead. The gun was out of his hand and out of his reach. Heero turned to look at the person that had successfully stopped him from completing his final mission, a frown on his face. The familiar brown braid drew his attention rather quickly.
"Duo." Large violet eyes peeked up at Heero. Duo grinned and said "Heya Heero." Heero sat up and said with a frown "You're interrupting my mission Duo." Duo frowned and said "I can't let you complete this mission Heero."
Heero's brows furrowed and he said "Unacceptable. My mission must be completed." Duo shook his head and said "Not this one Heero. I won't let you."
Heero shoved Duo off him and got up to go for the gun lying discarded a few feet away. His fingers grazed the gun before he was tackled to the ground again by Duo. Frowning at Duo, Duo said angrily "You can't kill yourself just because it was the final instructions of some wacky doctor! You can live on your own now! Free will Heero! FREE WILL! Doesn't that mean anything to you?"
Heero nodded. He said calmly “Free will is the power of making free choices unconstrained by external agencies.” Duo blinked and said “Wha? That’s not what I meant!” Heero responded “You asked me if Free Will meant anything to me and I responded.”
Duo looked irritated. He said with a growl “That’s not what I meant! You misunderstood me!” Duo got to his feet, letting Heero up in the process. Heero said “Free will is acceptable for civilians, but pilots-“ Duo interrupted “Former pilots Heero. Former.” Heero inclined his head in acknowledgement “Free will is not necessary for me. I just need to be able to efficiently finish my mission.” Duo said slapping his forehead in exasperation “No missions Heero! You’re free to do what you want! Although, if ya really want that kind of lifestyle, join Preventer’s with me! Lady Une’s practically salivating to have you work for her.”
“Hn….”
“Right, I’m going to keep the gun to ensure something like this doesn’t happen again.”
“Hn….”
“I’m going to fuck you all over this apartment.”
“Hn….- Not acceptable. Sex is not a part of my training.”
Duo had to laugh at that. He said after he regained his breath, “It’s okay buddy… I was just kidding. Besides, there’s no such thing as ‘training’ for sex! “
Duo shook his head with a resigned sigh and said “Now come on. Grab your stuff and we’ll go.” Heero looked doubtful, hesitation reading in his eyes. He was still contemplating whether or not to listen to Duo or complete his programming. Duo, seeing this indecision snapped without a second thought “It’s an order soldier!” Heero without hesitation snagged his duffel bag up while Duo tucked the gun into the back of his pants, wary of Heero trying to take it back from him and trying to finish his programming and convince him that now that the war was over, he had something to live for other than missions and killing.
