Shadow of Memories - Prologue
In mid February, a mild but foggy and overcast day. Although there was a gentle brightness to the day, the atmosphere unnerved the twenty-something American as he sauntered casually along the idyllically laid out street.
His braid swung behind him as he whipped his head around to whatever moved suspiciously to his left. Just a dog. `Not too sure what I was expecting. But hey, a little - although slightly creepy - black dog versus a total psycho. No complaints.'
He shrugged his jacket closer around him as he made his way to his `friend' Heero's apartment. At least they were no more than friends if anyone else asked. Duo smiled to himself and remembered the last night they'd been together, his blue-eyed lover in his tight red t-shirt, blue jeans and well worn leather jacket, but he still looked like a god.
They'd had coffee and kept their relationship anonymous until they got back to Duo's place. They spent the rest of the night so comfortably, watching anime movies and afterwards Heero made them some zabaglione, but not the regular kind - the Japanese boy's speciality made with amaretto.
Duo sighed as he remembered how the sumptuous warmth of the luxurious desert spread throughout his body. Two streets away, he turned a corner to a fairly open road, passing the coffee shop for the second time that day and smiled to himself, anticipating the doubtlessly wonderful afternoon that his lover had in store for them.
He stopped. `What was that?' he asked himself as he looked about more subtly than before. He shrugged and continued along the street, barely noticing the human shadow on the wall beside him.
It happened in less than a second.
He let out a wordless scream of shock and agony as knife slid through his back. He felt the poisoned tip that would ensure the knife's job was done thoroughly, clutching desperately at his chest as the blade ran through his body and out through the other side of his torso.
As he fell to the floor, he was vaguely aware of someone gasping in shock behind him and running towards him before his vision went black and the nothingness welcomed him.
