She's Having Our Baby!

"Heero, I love you! I need you, I want you, I'd do anything for you! Can't you see that?" Relena was desperate. She had long ago lost her calm and dignity in her plea for Heero's love. Panic took control as he showed no sign of being persuaded. Tears slid down her cheeks as she gripped his hand. She was on her knees, begging to be let into his heart. Yet, she somehow knew she was fighting a losing battle when she first arrived at his house and came face to face with one Duo Maxwell. He sat, now, to her left, watching as her fear and panic grew from Heero's inaction. He smirked, knowing Heero would not say a thing until Relena said her peace, for she had asked him to.

"After all we've been through together, I know you love me, too! Why else would you go out of your way to save me?" It was a last resort, but she was at her wit's end. She waited for an answer with baited breath, staring up into his blue eyes for any sign emotion. He said nothing, but continued to sit there, not even blinking. Slowly, she stood and stepped back, trying to regain her composure.

"At least answer me that, Heero." Her voice dropped, breaking up from the sobs trying to escape. "Tell me why." She looked him in the eye, demanding an answer. She was determined to hold her ground, despite her tears and her all ready breaking heart. She wanted an answer, and she wasn't leaving till she got one. After a moment of tense silence, he spoke.

"You're right, Relena. I do love you . . ." This, Duo hadn't expected. If either of the two had bothered to look in his direction, they might have noticed that his jaw had hit the floor and that his eyes were three sizes larger, while his pupils were three sizes smaller. Relena's own shock was evident, though in a much smaller degree. She should have been happy, but the way he said it told her there was more. She feared what he was going to say next. " . . . but as a sister. No more."

Relena's head swam with the conviction. She sat down heavily onto the chair opposite Heero as her knees gave out. Her head hung low, casting a shadow over her features, his words echoing in her mind, her own thoughts racing, though only bits and pieces becoming coherent.

A sister! I'm like a sister to him?!? But he loves me! As a sister! I still love him . . . I'd still do anything for him . . . maybe . . . if I accept it . . . and tried not to force him . . . maybe someday . . . he will love me . . . like I love him . . . it could work . . . still be friends . . . friends become lovers all the time! We could still be together! As long as he doesn't love someone else . . . have to find out . . .

"Alright, Heero. I can accept that." The young woman lifted her head, wiping the tears from her cheeks. She had to be strong for him. "After all, we will still be friends, right?" Her voice cracked on the last word, but she smiled anyway. Her tears stopped and her smile back in place, she was once again becoming the peace-loving diplomat the world knew and loved.

"Of course." Heero gave her a small smile in return. He had finally gotten through to her after all these years. Duo still sat on the sidelines, wishing he had popcorn while watching this little drama.

"So, Heero, since you're not interested in me, is there someone else you are interested in? I'm asking as a friend, of course!" She decided playing 'the happy little matchmaker' was the best way to find out who her competition was. However, she wondered if she should have waited a bit before asking.

"Um, Relena . . ." Heero looked away, almost shyly. Relena was surprised by this. She had never seen him act like this before. It was almost like he was afraid to tell her something. It was unnerving.

"Relena, I've been married for two years now. I tried to tell you, we all have, but you wouldn't listen." He faced her before continuing, hoping she would see the truth in his words. She was frozen in place, still smiling. She was still for so long, Duo thought she might have died from shock, but then she laughed. A high-pitched, nervous laugh. The kind of laugh you hear from someone who doesn't want to believe what they just heard.

"T-to whom, m-might I ask?" Duo just about fell out of his chair. She was still being congenial, even though she was blinking quite a bit and was twisting her hanky rather hard. However, Duo couldn't believe she would ask, considering that he and Heero had been living together for the past three years. A fact Relena knew very well.

"Duo." Relena turned to Duo as if expecting him to answer the question, but all she received was a Cheshire grin and a little wave. She looked back to Heero, her brow furrowed in question. Heero looked to Duo. Relena did likewise. Duo held his clasped hands next to his tilted head as he puckered his lips and batted his eyelashes. Relena looked back at Heero, who returned her gaze, his eyebrows raised. As realization finally sunk in, Relena's face scrunched up as if in pain as her head dropped into her hands. She began muttering under her breath, but her words were incoherent to the young men in the room. Her head began to shake as she repeated one word over and over.

"No!" She shouted as she shot up out of her chair, her hair whipping about and tears once again marring her face. Dignity be damned, now was not the time for composure. "No. Not him! Not a-a guy! What does he have that I don't? I mean, what can he give you that I can't? He could never give you a child!" Duo cringed, but she continued without noticing. "I can! I will! I-I want to have your child, Heero!" She stopped then, noticing a light appear in Heero's eyes.

"I think that can be arranged." Heero smirked, turning his attention to Duo, whose expression was beyond words.

"You can't be serious!" Relena watched the two, as they seemed to communicate without words then, wondering what they had in mind, but not sure if she was going to like the answer when it came.
