Somewhere I belong: Superficial Healing

Â

Duo pushed his hair out of his face before rubbing eyes that had been awake far too long. Just a few more minutes and he would have that stupid little bug in that damn security program that he had been chasing for the past 36 hours. Finally hearing the little beep that alerted him to his success he pushed himself away from his desk and stood up, allowing himself a moment to revel in his victory before stretching his rather cramped body and sitting down again to prepare and send his report in. Then he would be free to have absolutely nothing to do for the next week, until his next job came in.

Living as Jaysha was an excellent way to earn money. Apart from the fact that he had garnered a lot of money from GHD in the six months he and Quatre had been "employees", it was nice to be able to have something to do every once in a while. Something to take his mind off … everything.

The report finished he trudged his way to the bathroom to take a shower, noticing that the sun was rising as he passed the kitchen. Mentally steeling himself he walked passed the kitchen and passed the knives, only sighing in relief when he reached the bathroom. Turning the water on and mentally checking himself to make sure that he turned it short of boiling, he climbed into the shower and sank down on the floor, clutching his knees to his chest. He remembered Quatre coming over for his first visit, a few days after Duo had been released and hung his head in shame. Had it really only been several weeks ago, had he really been that desperate?

~#~

^^(When this began.)
I had nothing to say.
And I get lost in the nothingness inside of me. ^^

Everything was moving about him in a daze. Duo couldn't seem to focus on anything and the days had blended into one another. Those final words he had said to Heero:

"I have a home Heero, and you no longer belong there. Sorry is just not enough.", had ripped out his own heart and thrown it away. After the adrenaline had passed and Duo had returned to his home, the sadness overcame him. The anger melted away and left him feeling depressed, out of his depth and alone; very alone. He found himself wanting to run back to Heero and throw himself in his arms, and tell him it was ok and that he would forgive him everything. So much did Duo wish that everything had just been a bad dream, that he had tried to start convincing himself of just that fact. But no matter how hard he tried, no matter what he did; although he loved Heero more than life itself, he no longer trusted him.

For throwing away the trust Duo had given him so grudgingly Duo wanted to wring his neck, but at the same time he wanted to be held by those arms that had always made him feel safe; and yet would probably never have that affect again.

One afternoon a few days later had found him sitting at the kitchen breakfast bar, just staring at absolutely nothing, until his eyes focused on a knife again. Clarity blessed him with its presence and all he could think of, was that pain was going to help him deal with this. His ever present friend who never let him down, who never betrayed him; pain would help him. Almost in a trance like state he grabbed the knife and headed up to his bathroom. Somehow he stripped off his clothes still holding the knife, gazing at it as if it were a lifeline, and stepped into the shower running only the hot water.

Sitting himself on the floor of the shower he was fascinated by the wounds the knife could inflict. Slowly he began to twist the knife, not noticing how his face twisted with the pain, or the tears that ran down his face; just concentrating on the task at hand. He attacked each thigh first creating holes in his legs that although not deadly, definitely allowed for a fair amount of blood loss. After that he began attacking his left upper arm, still watching, not noticing anything else.

Which was probably why he had not heard Quatre, who still had a key, enter the house. Quatre got a feeling of foreboding as soon as he walked into the house. Having promised Duo he would come and visit him soon, he figured leaving the man alone for a few days wouldn't be all that bad. How wrong could he have been?

Racing up the stairs he took them two at a time, and was relieved to see he didn't have to break down the bathroom door, as Duo had for some reason left it open. However the relief vanished as he saw an all too familiar site before him. Only this time it was ten times worse. Steeling himself against the heat that he knew would be coming from the water nozzle, Quatre turned the water off. Duo didn't seem to notice, just kept boring away at his arm. Knowing better than to startle the violet eyed man, Quatre knelt down in the shower next to his friend, not caring that he was getting rather wet and fairly bloody, and spoke softly.

"Duo…" The boring stopped but otherwise there was no reaction from Duo and so Quatre tried again. "Duo…"

Glazed, pain filled violet orbs gazed up at him, tears streaming down his cheeks. "I…" He didn't get any further as sobs wracked his body. Quatre simply held him and soothed him, before having a sense of déjà vu as he lifted the frail man easily and carried him into the bedroom.

~#~

In the not as hot as usual shower, Duo sighed as he began to soap his hair, running over those days in his head as he lavished attention on his one remaining pride and joy.

~#~

Duo had woken up to find a concerned Quatre half dozing in a chair next to his bed; such a familiar sight that it was a moment before he realised that he wasn't actually in the hospital anymore, he was actually at his `home' in his bed…without Heero…

The pain ripped through his chest as the sense of betrayal that never seemed far from him these days, tore through his body leaving him gasping for breath. At the obvious distress Duo was in, Quatre roused from his doze. Seeing his friend curled into almost a fetal ball in pain that was tangible enough for Quatre to feel, he rose from the chair and sat on the edge of the bed. Reaching forward, he gently placed a hand on Duo's shoulder causing the other man to look up at him with big saucer like eyes.

"Duo…calm down…it's ok…" Quatre projected as much calm as he possibly could, considering that he wasn't feeling particularly calm himself due to the fact that Duo was in so much pain.

The _expression on Duo's face relaxed a little, just a little. He looked up at his best friend with eyes full of anger, sadness, desperation and for some reason that Quatre couldn't fathom, self loathing. His voice was barely audible but still the blonde managed to catch what he said. "How can anything ever be ok Cat… he tore my soul out, my heart… how can I be anything now, without him?"

^^I wanna heal, I wanna feel, What I thought was never real
I wanna let go of the pain I've felt so long
Erase all the pain til' it's gone ^^

Leaning forward Quatre gathered his best friend into a warm hug whispering over and over again. "We'll help find you Duo, I promise, I promise!"

The braided pilot felt himself fall into sleep once again.

Upon waking later that afternoon Duo saw that Quatre was talking to someone on the vid phone in the room. Frowning, Duo went to stand up, but let out a cry of pain as his legs reminded him of the torment he had put them through the evening before. That sound was enough to get Quatre's attention though and the blonde turned and smiled at his friend, before ending the conversation and heading over to the bed.

"You…" he said pointing at his best friend mockingly. "have been a bad Duo!"

Duo looked a little confused.

"Your psychologist, who you neglected to continue seeing after Heero's fuck up is coming to see you tomorrow. A doctor and nutrionist will be here within the next 2 hours and no Duo, don't give me that look. "It appeared Quatre wasn't going to put up with Duo saying no to anything.

Duo continued to grumble loudly but eventually gave up since it seemed Quatre was intent on his mothering of him. He was fairly sure he was going to get lectures from all parties concerned, and was actually a little worried about his psychologists visit.

~#~

Massaging conditioner through his hair Duo allowed himself to chuckle as he remembered Quatre's mother hen outlook on everything.

~#~

The doctor and nutritionist interviews, because Duo refused to view them as actually being for his benefit, had actually gone off without a hitch. If you didn't call admonishments and threats of hospitalisation if he didn't stop cutting himself to shreads or starving himself `without a hitch'. He now had lists that were as long as he was tall on what he was allowed to eat and all of the 8 times a day he was supposed to eat to keep up with his amazing metabolism. The next three months were mapped out almost exactly so he could put a little weight back on and thereafter he would be given a new plan. As it was Duo was now stuck with visiting the doctor once every 2 weeks and the nutritionist every four. Although most of his brain kept telling him to rebel against the `orders' he was getting, cause people just weren't supposed to order Duo Maxwell around, there was a small rational part of his brain that kept telling him that yes, these people were right and he had been an idiot.

It was the interview with his psychologist that had Duo jumping on hot coals. It wasn't that he didn't like the woman, on the contrary in fact, he respected Miss Collins. She had been the one to help him start dealing with things. However as he had had Heero to help him through everything he had only gone once every two weeks. He had never visited her by himself, and now, she was coming to see him. She was coming to see him because he had regressed and cut the crap out of his legs, and she was coming to see him, knowing vaguely what Heero had done.

It wasn't actually going as badly as he had thought though. She was a little irate that he had just let his visits fall and calmly informed him that he would be attending sessions with her at least 2 times a week.

However her first session with him had been a little surprising.

"Duo, with everything that has happened, I want you to do something ok?"

"What?" As usual Duo was always suspicious.

"I want you to take up a hobby."

Raising and eyebrow the braided boy blinked. "I have lots of hobbies…"

"Oh and they are?"

"Target practice, kick boxing and hacking." The answers were like out of a shotgun.

"I mean non-violent, or lifestyle change threatening hobbies Duo."

"Oh."

"Think, is there anything that you have wanted to do, or just haven't had time to do?"

A crinkle creased his brow as he thought. "Well, actually. I think I would like to work with children, you know, ones that grew up like me…and well …" He felt a little hesitant. "Singing, I like singing."

Miss Collins looked a little surprised but then smiled. "Then sing Duo, do something with it, learn an instrument so you can play at the same time or something. But Duo, no violence. Only when you start making progress would I suggest working with Children, maybe at a local orphanage?"

Nodding seriously, Duo was too busy thinking about how he could do something with his singing and which orphanage he could go and help, that he almost missed her last comment.

"Oh and try meditation, I think you could use it."

Shit that meant…oh well. Wufei wasn't bad company at all really, Duo just felt dishonourable and therefore didn't feel worthy of the Chinese man's company and so therefore tried to avoid being around him too much, however, he did respect the man and love him as a friend, so learning to meditate probably wasn't going to be that bad.

The visits were good and after a few weeks Duo had taught himself a few of the more popular songs on his newly acquired guitar, which he found amazingly easy to use and play. Since he was used to tinkering with far more complex things he found the guitar amazingly simple to use, and the chords almost logical. He loved it. However he preferred the older songs, of years gone and faded now. So after a few weeks he started inquiring as to open mike nights and little spots at local clubs. He hadn't done anything yet but was in the process of trying to work up the courage. The normal face he presented to everyone wasn't the real him. Oh hell yes, he was confident in his hacking ability, but when it came to his musical prowess, he was shy. Always just having sung, Duo was hesitant to show anyone else what he could do, due to not having the confidence in that ability, but Collins had told him it would help him, and he should probably listen to her since she had been right that it would make him feel better to have his singing as a hobby.

A couple of weeks later, after finally getting the hang of focusing and shutting intruding elements out, he had walked passed a knife for the first time in a long time, without picking it up. Oh sure, he had thought about it, but that wasn't the point, he hadn't picked it up. And as Miss Collins had assured him he would have progressions and regressions. But that was besides the point, he could now seek out an orphanage to actually do something constructive at.

The fact was the he was making progress.

~#~

Reluctantly Duo stood and turned off the nice warm shower and grabbed a towel to start drying off his hair.

That accomplished, he wandered into his bedroom and sat on the bed, towel wrapped around his waist as he worked the tangles out of his hair. He had done it, if he remembered correctly, he was now into his third week of denying himself self inflicted pain. Now to some people that might sound stupid, but for someone in Duo's condition it was a miracle.

Quatre was proud of him and kept telling him so, and Wufei said he was making surprisingly good progress in the art of meditation.

But Duo was doing it for another reason. He didn't want to hurt anyone else, and so he couldn't kill himself; he needed that new control to make sure that he didn't lose it and become completely insane.

Having braided his hair, he climbed into bed. He had promised Quatre that he would be at his Christmas party later that evening, so therefore Duo had decided to sleep during the day, not that the choice had really been his, but hell, who was counting. Repeating his usually nightly ritual, the braided man pushed any thought of Heero away and tried to barricade them in, although he knew that they would eventually break back out, he just needed some peace. As his head hit the pillow, his eyes closed and he slept, with a sad smile crossing his lips.

In one of the many primary schools in the new world a child looked around to make sure that no one was looking, and stole candy from his neighbour, hiding it in his own desk and smiling smugly. Finally he had the something that mommy and daddy never let him have.

Clad in black leather pants, a black silk shirt and his favourite boots or ok his usual attire, Duo pulled up on his motorcycle outside of Quatre's mansion. Flexing leather gloved fingers he approached the door, a feeling of nervousness in his stomach.

The door opened before he could knock, and he couldn't help the smile that crossed his face as he saw his best friend standing there dressed like a Christmas elf. He was so close to asking which of Wufei or Trowa were Santa Claus but managed to stop himself.

Looking closely at his friend for a moment Quatre came forward and hugged him tightly, so that Duo wouldn't see the sadness that spread across Quatre's face as the blonde realised that Duo's smile, although genuine lately, never seemed to lose that tinge of sorrow.

"Come on Duo, let's go have some food, I am just dying to open our presents!!!"

Not able to help himself, Duo laughed and let himself be dragged along by his friend.

As they entered the living room, where the food was spread out, probably because Quatre knew Duo hated formal dining, Wufei raised his head and let a rare smile escape his lips as he watched Duo laugh. The chestnut haired man had put on weight, at last. Not much, but enough to fill him out a little more and give his face back some of its glow. However much Wufei wanted to believe that everything was all fine and dandy with the man again, he knew it wasn't. Through a few hours of meditative training a week with his friend, he had come to see that he was definitely not over Heero, in fact, Wufei had the distinct feeling that Duo was floundering. But the training he was providing Duo with, was allowing the latter to have the strength to separate things and deal with the situation a little bit at a time. A light sigh escaped Wufei's lips as he stood up to greet his friend. He had wanted to invite Heero, but Quatre had glared at him in a way which Wufei had never thought the blond could, and so he had agreed that at this point in time it was probably not the best idea.

"Duo…" Somehow during the meditation training Wufei had stopped calling his friend by his last name. "Good to see you."

A light smile still graced Duo's lips, that ever-present tinge of sorrow still lingering. "You too Wu-man…" A mischievous glint entered Duo's eyes and Wufei couldn't help but grin. He may have given Duo the honour of calling him by his first name, but Duo still annoyed the crap out of Wufei whenever he got that chance to. And for some reason Wufei no longer actually minded, he just pretended he did, for the sake of the game that he felt Duo needed to play.

"The names Wufei, Duo, you're not senile, remember it!"

Duo chuckled and nodded to Trowa. "How do you put up with them Trow?"

Trowa just smiled and nodded his head in acknowledgment.

"Ahhh yes old chap, I should have thought of that…" Duo continued as if Trowa had spoken, eliciting a slight laugh from his silent friend. Plopping himself down on the couch Duo surveyed the food in front of him. Actually feeling hungry for once he noticed that the food on the table had been suspiciously catered to the exact sort of stuff he usually liked; that had indeed been denied him for almost the last three months due to his stupid nutritionist. Chiding himself gently, because he knew the only reason he had gotten some way back to his former size was that nutrition plan.

A very genuine smile on his face, Duo raised his eyes and looked at Quatre. "Thanks Cat, I have so missed this food."

Grinning like his nick-namesake Quatre laughed a little. "Yeah well I checked before I had this prepared. And they said that every once in a while it was ok for you to eat like crap."

All of them laughed a little, the tension easing till it was just four friends who were sharing a Christmas Eve together, trying to forget that one of them was missing.

After the food was gone and each had a nice glass of warm eggnog in them, Quatre bounded to his feet and ran to the Christmas tree. "Presents, presents!" The little elf jumped up and down making the other three laugh.

Duo remembered his presents and pulled them out of his pocket. Three tiny boxes; one green, one deep blue, and one black. He laid them on the table in front of him a little nervously. "You guys first Cat, I want to go last, okay?"

Smiling at his friend Quatre agreed and pulled out the first present from himself to Wufei. "Merry Christmas love." A chaste kiss was placed on Wufeis mouth and then Quatre repeated the process with Trowa. "Um Duo…" Quatre pulled out a very large present and placed it on the couch behind Duo. "Merry Christmas."

A little surprised Duo opened his present from Quatre, oblivious to the others giving and receiving gifts. He couldn't believe it. Quatre had been with him when he had first entered the music shop somewhat nervously to purchase his first guitar. As he had never played before he just chose a simple one that seemed to have a deeper sound than the other ones he had looked at. Pointing in a corner he had picked out the most beautiful mahogany looking acoustic/electric guitar that he had ever seen and said to Quatre "When I can play, I'll get that one."

Sitting in his hands was that perfect guitar. Dumb struck Duo reached absently for the other two presents. One was a hard case for the guitar along with a selection of pics and books to help him with fingering techniques and for some of his favourite songs, along with one of the best microphones on the market; While the last one was a set of two really really nice amps.

Looking up at his friends Duo Maxwell found himself speechless. He opened his mouth, but the words wouldn't come out.

"Well you see Duo, we just thought we'd give you a gentle push in the direction we really think you should go." Quatre smiled.

Wufei nodded. "If you do end up performing, you will need your own equipment."

"Hope we didn't presume." Trowa was eyeing him intently, as if waiting for a reaction.

Suddenly his voice seemed to return. "No guys, this is great! Now I don't have a choice but to get better do I? Cant let you down now…" His eyes twinkled a little as he caressed the guitar. "Anyway, um, now time for my presents for you guys. If you don't like them, just say so… but I hope you do." Rushing his words to the end he nervously handed the green box to Trowa, the black box to Wufei and the blue box to Quatre.

The first gasp came from Wufei. Nestled on Velvet in his box was a ring of white gold. Somehow the Chinese dragon on it seemed to come to life, its onyx eyes somehow shining as the light caught it. Inside the band was engraved.

Trowa had opened his a split second later, only to let a gasp escape his lips as well. Nestled in the green velvet of his box was a white gold ring with the head of a lion on it that somehow seemed to come to life as the light caught the emerald eyes. He squinted a little to read the engraving.

Quatre was intent on opening his own box, that he did not notice the reactions of his lovers. Nestled in blue velvet inside his box was a white gold ring with a phoenix on it. Its sapphire eyes made it come alive as the light caught it. His own breath catching in his throat while he looked at the intricately detailed ring in his hands, he managed to whisper the words that were engraved on each of the rings. "Infinite friendship - Duo"

All three of them looked up to see a rather nervous Duo standing in front of them looking at the ground and scuffing the toes of his boots against the carpet. None of them knew of the fourth ring he had had made, that he had no idea why he had had made. But they could all see the pensive look on his face as they realised he wasn't sure if they liked or welcomed his gifts, while he twisted his own rings on his fingers.

Breaking out of the reverie, Quatre rushed Duo and enveloped him in a bear hug, jumping up and down till Duo began to laugh. "Duo, it's beautiful…"

"Yes, it is…" Trowa lowered his gaze so no one would see the rare tears that were welling in his eyes. Despite all the shit that Duo had been put through over the last two years, he was still the caring, loving man that they all loved.

"Thank you Duo, I'll never take it off." Duo could hear the sincerity in Wufei's voice and he smiled warmly.

"Whew, that's a relief, from the initial looks on your faces I was thinking of taking my presents and running while I could."

Although Quatre could hear the joking tone to Duo's voice, a slight frown marred his face as he felt that Duo was also half serious.

Pulling Duo down in front of the Christmas tree, Quatre nodded to Wufei. "Play us something Duo…"

Taking the guitar in his hands Duo looked at it reverently and then picked a pic out of the box that Trowa had sat next to him. "Ok, but you asked for it…"

That same morning

~~

Heero paced, trying to formulate a plan. Exasperated he punched his fist into the wall for the too-many'th time. If this was a mission he would have no problem planning for it . But treating things as a mission had been his mistake to begin with, and he didn't plan on making it again. Trying to keep his determined resolve, Heero pushed the thoughts of hopelessness to the back of his mind, fighting them with the steely determination, that was the one skill he had learnt under J that he still deliberately utilised.

^^(Inside of me.)
But all that they can see the words revealed.
Is the only real thing that i got left to feel.
(Nothing to lose.)
Just stuck, hollow and alone.
And the fault is my own, and the fault is my own. ^^

He couldn't believe how empty he had felt, how upon having that last vestige of hope torn away from him, he had simply fallen into robot mode and gone on automatic pilot. The days had blended into one another until he realized there was no way that he could go on like he was.

~#~

Walking through the Preventer offices, Heero felt numb. Completely numb, not just that partially cold sort of numb, but everything numb. The sort of numb that can be associated with having given up all hope of anything forever. People stayed out of his way, partially because his demeanour screamed `Stay the fuck away from me' and partially because he looked like death warmed up.

Heero couldn't stand it. Every room he walked past, he remembered something about him and Duo inside of that room. Especially their office, and a couple of the janitor closets, and well, hell a lot of other places. The little Japanese garden outside, the systems room that still faintly smelled like the braided man, pretty much everywhere actually.

And then it hit him; like a ton of bricks, and said ton of bricks smashed into him and bowled him over.

This was what Duo had gone through, this was what Duo had endured, with one teensy fucking huge difference. Duo had thought Heero was dead, that he would never even have the chance to have him ever again. Although Heero knew his chances of ever winning Duo back were extremely miniscule, the fact that his braided baka was alive was something that helped keep him hoping.

As realisation dawned Heero punched the nearest wall, sending his fist flying through it, and the people around him, scurrying away. Disregarding the cuts on his fist, he marched into Une's office.

And threw his badge on her desk.

Raising her eyes from her paperwork Une looked at the last remaining ex-Gundam pilot who had been working for the Preventers.

Face closed and cold Heero crossed his arms. "I am resigning. If there is ever a chance for me to win him back, it wont come through working here. I fucked up big time and this place has too many memories of just how much." Turning on his heel, Heero simply exited the office.

Une gathered the badge in her hands, looking at it slowly and turning it over in her hands. Surprise was gripping her; not really that Heero had resigned, nor really that he had done so so soon, but that he had actually spoken more than three words to her and deigned her with the reasoning behind his decision. She felt oddly honoured.

~#~

And so it was that Heero came to be pacing around his house, all alone, on Christmas eve. Formulating a plan of action to win the man back who meant more to him that life itself was not easy. But he was determined to manage it.

He was fairly certain that he would have to start from the beginning once again, as in completely from the beginning, which meant he would have to win Duo's trust back, which meant, he would have to know where Duo was living in order to win his trust back. Or should he wait till or if Duo contacted him?

It was all so frustrating. Heero wasn't equipped to deal with things like this on his own. He had always relied on Duo to help him through the complexities of feelings before this.

~I need to focus, focus on Duo. Focus on the things that I should have gotten right the first time around. I refuse to give up.~

Happy that he had made his own little mantra Heero went about pouring himself a cup of eggnog, trying to forget the fact that he was fairy sure all the others would be gathered around a nice Christmas tree having a party of their own. He would make sure he would be with them all again, they were his family and without them he felt… strangely… empty.

Sighing he threw himself down onto the couch and sipped at his drink, pondering different ways to win back Duo's trust, when there was a knock at the door.

Surprised, Heero stood, walking to the door and opened it.

Zechs Marquise was one person he had not exactly been expecting.

"We need to talk Heero…"

Nodding wordlessly Heero ushered Zechs into his home.

#*#

Quatre, Wufei and Trowa sat back and listened as Duo poured his broken heart into the music he played, not seeming to notice the tears that ran down his face or those of his friends.

It was clear to all three of them that Duo was far from healed, was far from being ok, that he was still broken inside, and still far too much in love with Heero; and it made them ache and want to help him. All the healing that he showed to the world was superficial, like his mask, just for those he cared for, so they wouldn't worry. But it made them worry more.

^^I wanna heal, I wanna feel, like I'm close to something real
I wanna find something I've wanted all along
Somewhere I belong ^^

#*#

Heero's face grew stone cold, all _expression gone from his body, as he listened to what Zechs was saying. He couldn't believe what Zechs was telling him, but why would the man lie and to be honest, how could Heero blame Duo?

His world fell apart just that little bit more as that sense of hopelessness threatened to engulf him again … did he honestly have a hope in hell of winning Duo back?

#*#

Popping the last bit of stolen candy into its mouth, the child ran around the playground beckoning to mommy and daddy to watch it climb on the Jungle-jim. They laughed at their young one glad to see him having so much fun. As he jumped to the ground and waved to them they waved back.

And then he dropped to the ground with a cry of pain, as his body started convulsing. His parents ran to him, screaming for someone to call an ambulance and arrived at his side to see him frothing at the mouth, as the convulsions wracked his body and his eyes rolled back in his head.

To be Continued

Well there we go… the first chapter of the Sequel to Some Way Back ïŠ

I must thank Linkin Park though, because although I had a general Idea of what I wanted to write, it wasn't until I heard the song that is used in this fic, that the idea crystallised. Call music my muse hehe.

Please tell me what you think
