Chapter four

As the last one left, Quatre Raberba Winner's pale head could be seen hovering outside her door.

"Come in Quatre, please."

To her surprise, he didn't enter alone.

"Heero! I thought you were going to act as security for the President until the impeachment hearings were over?"

Even after three years of disciplining herself, the proximity of her personal bodyguard was occasionally unsettling for Relena. She hadn't expected to see Heero Yuy's lanky figure and undisciplined head of hair for at least a few days. She'd thought that she had succeeded in convincing him that the President of the ESUN needed his services more than she did. Only now he was back. and with Quatre of all people. Regaining her composure, she turned to her scheduled lunch date and gave him a genuinely warm smile.

"Thanks for being on time Quatre. I needed to be bailed out of that meeting."

Quatre grinned conspiratorially. "Happy to be of service, Miss Relena."

Feeling calmer, Relena turned to face the man she revered above all others, who tortured her by never leaving her side with a practiced shield of indifference. She refused to look him in the eye, instead focusing on the neutral area of his shirt collar. "Well, Heero. I didn't expect you back so soon." His silence won after only a few seconds and she raised her eyes to level with his. He was stoic as usual, but his eyes held pain and longing that never wavered, always there, burning away her resolve.

Why, why can't you leave me alone, Heero? Why can't you just leave? Can't you see that your presence is just more torture every day? I am married to the State. I cannot love one man when I am meant to love humanity entire. Like the ancient Elizabeth, I am destined to be a virgin Queen.

And once again, she almost lost her veneer of composure.

Her forgotten guest shuffled his feet and politely coughed into his hand. "Ah, perhaps we should reschedule our luncheon, Miss Relena. You seem a little busy today."

"No! No, of course not, Quatre. I do need to eat after all, and I really need your opinion on how the colonies are dealing with our crisis here on Earth." She glanced at her silent guardian. "I expect even Heero needs to eat at some point today."
