Sunset Over The Horizon
Part 8
Wu Fei had climbed the few flights of stairs with little effort. He had only one thing on his mind and that was to find his wife. Une had given them the ward level and room number back at HQ to save time. He scanned the numbers of each room as he passed, and then looking forward he knew he had found it. Two well-structured Preventer security agents stood by the door that would finally lead him to his wife. He swiftly made his way over to the room but the two men, not taking any chances, raised their weapons and halted Wu Fei in his path.
"State your business," the taller of the two demanded, moving forward slightly while his partner covered him.
"Stand aside, I wish to see my wife" the Chinese man countermanded.
Reading the small-framed man's tag, the security agent stepped back, an apologetic look on his face, "My apologies, Agent Chang. We didn't recognize you."
The Chinese man's face softened a little, "Well at least you do your job efficiently enough. Now if I may …" he said as he walked past the agents, "My wife…"
The shorter security agent held the door open as Wu Fei tentatively walked into the darkened room. The door shut behind him and he noted that the curtains were pulled around the bed as he moved to the side nearest the window. Slowly he made his way to the part in the curtains surrounding the bed and peeked inside. Her eyes were shut. Sleeping Wu Fei figured. He crept inside and pulled up a chair, sitting as close to the bed as possible. The very sight of her lying there, alive, was more than just a relief.
He watched as she stirred a little and then something caught his sight. He stared at her arm as it came to rest by her side and his anger raged within him. Black and blue marks marred her usually unblemished skin over one arm and the other in a cast up to her elbow. Without thinking his hand reached out and slammed against the wall. The noise startling Sally into consciousness and bringing the security agents along with Heero and Duo flying into the room.
Wu Fei remained unmoving, unemotional, his hand slowly swelling and the wall a little more than slightly dented.
Duo swallowed as the dust and small chips of wall settled on the floor below. He quickly made a mental note never to piss the Wu man off. It was as if Chang hadn't even noticed their ungraceful entrance into the room.
Still a little disorientated from being woken so suddenly, Sally rubbed her eyes and then peered at the unclear figure in front of her. "Wu, Wu Fei?" she muttered quietly.
Her voice broke his concentration and he left his position at the wall to sit by her on the edge of the bed; and Duo, realizing that the one thing Wu Fei needed now was time alone with her, began ushering everyone out of the room. He caught Wu Fei's eye as he began to shut the door and Wu Fei gave him a look of grateful thanks. Duo nodded respectfully then disappeared from sight behind the doors.
Now alone with his wife, the other side of Wu Fei Chang snuck through. He tenderly reached out and stroked the woman's cheek with his free hand and softly sighed, "I'm sorry. I have failed you."
Her sight finally returning to normal allowed her to see the look on her husband's face. "Don't, Wu Fei." she began softly, "It was beyond your control. You couldn't have done a thing. Nobody would have realized that this could happen." Wu Fei remained silent as Sally continued. "I will not allow you to blame yourself for not being able to protect me… and I will certainly not allow you to question your honor!"
"There is no honor when a man fails to protect his family!" Wu Fei stated harshly.
Sally looked up into his dark, solemn eyes and saw no change in his face. She reached up and touched his arm. "Wu Fei… not even your god, Nataku, could have predicted this!"
He looked to the floor.
"Isn't it enough that we are together again, Wu Fei; if so, then does anything else really matter?"
The Chinese man closed his eyes, Sally's words etching into his soul as he pondered the strength of the words she had just spoken. "No…It doesn't."
Sally watched him as he fought to keep in control of his emotions. His lips quivered, he clenched his good hand into a fist, the other, limp by his side.
"Oh, Wu Fei…" she pulled him down by the shirtsleeve, wrapped her free arm around him and his head came to rest in the crevice of her neck. Seconds later his body began to tremble and a silent cascade of warmth washed down over her bare flesh.
But no one else would ever know.

Heero stood, arms folded whilst Duo leant by the wall and the security agents had taken once more their original positions. Duo sighed wistfully and glanced at his watch. "Heero, I think now would be a good time to go eat. We should give them an hour or so to themselves before going in there and asking questions. I mean, I know it was only a few hours in-between the time she was taken and the time she was found, but still…"
Heero nodded in agreement with his partner. "The cafeteria should still be open. We can get coffee and a meal there if you like."
"Coffee… Coffee sounds like a great idea. I hope they have hot-dogs. I really feel like a hot-dog Heero."
Heero sighed. "Come on, let's go Duo." He addressed the security agents, "We'll be back later. Let them alone. Wu Fei will more than likely inform us when he's ready to go ahead with the next step."
"The taller of the security agents nodded. "Roger that Agent Yuy. If we're not here the shift will have turned over. So please keep your tags on at all times."
Duo pulled a face, "Don't worry I think we know what we need to do."
Heero grinned. "Says you." He grabbed Duo's sleeve and dragged him off towards the elevator. Sometimes he wondered if Duo really thought before speaking. He could be a little contemptuous at times. The dark haired agent pressed the button on the wall and the doors opened.
Duo waved to the other Preventer agents before being thwapped gently across the back of the head, "Please excuse his behavior, I'll be sure to bring his leash next time," Heero apologized as he dragged his husband into the car of the elevator.
"As long as I get to wear the collar too, Heero."
Heero blushed and quickly pressed the inner button, the elevator doors shut, securing him safely from any more embarrassment due to Duo's senseless banter.
As the elevator began its descent the shorter security guard couldn't help the grin that spread across his face. "I always figured that Maxwell would be the kinky type. "
Raising an eyebrow his taller companion threw him a sideways glance, "Takes one to know one I say."
The shorter man `s face blazed red and suddenly the corridor was silent. Needless to say nothing more was said.

Noin shut her computer down for the day and packed her things into her desk drawers. After everything that had gone on today she would be glad to go home to a nice warm bath.
Arms folded and leaning against the doorframe of her office, Zechs watched the young woman neatly organize everything into its rightful place for the night. "I don't suppose you'd consider tidying my office when we get home?" he grinned
Noin stopped and grinned back at him, "Now you know why I use my maiden name here at work. My office is neater than the one my husband operates at home."
"Mrs. Marquise I am cut to the bone," he said, playfully placing his hand over his forehead in the mock pretense of being offended
Lucrezia laughed, "Can't have myself being associated with a common slacker now can I?"
Zechs moved forwards taking his wife into his arms. "No, I suppose that would not be acceptable for a woman of your stature, my love."
"And don't you forget it!" She smirked as her husband leant over and kissed her softly. "Let's try again Zechs!" she whispered in his ear.
Zechs broke their embrace and stood back a little. He looked at his wife, a worried frown washing over his face. It hadn't been that long since they had lost their first child and almost her own life due to unexpected complications with her pregnancy. As much as he wanted to start a family he wasn't in any hurry for a repeat of what had happened back then.
~*~ Flashback~*~
"Stat code red, get her into surgery now!"
"What the hell is happening!?" Zechs demanded grabbing Sally by her coat sleeve as she and her medical team flew past him pushing his wife on a gurney towards the emergency theater.
"She's lost too much blood, Zechs. If we don't operate now you'll lose both of them."
Zechs took a step backwards as Sally pulled away from his grip. Those words not the ones he had expected to hear. Stunned, he located the nearest available seat and sat down, still none the wiser as to what was transpiring around him
Sighing deeply he did the only thing he could do.
He waited.

An hour passed and then another and Zechs had drifted in and out of a restless slumber. He was woken by the soft touch of a hand on his shoulder. He rubbed his eyes and focussed.
Sally had returned.
Zechs pulled himself upright and the medical officer sat herself down next to him. He noted that her face was emotionless and immediately knew that all was not well.
"Sally?" his voice was shaky and barely audible, "Please, I need to know… " he begged.
She sighed deeply, reluctant to share her news, "I'm truly sorry, Milliardo," she began gently, "We tried everything we could, but I'm afraid there was nothing we could do to save the baby."
"Lucrezia?" he asked. His mind was in turmoil but he still had enough wits about him to ask about his wife. If he had lost her, if she had not made it either…
"We managed to stabilize her. She'd lost so much blood I had to organize an immediate blood transfusion without your permission I hope you won't hold that against me Zechs. I will understand however, if you wish to take matters further, but it was a now or never situation."
~*~ End Flashback ~*~
Noin knew by the look on Zechs' face exactly what was running through his mind. She reached out, grasping his hands with both of hers. "We can't stop living, Milliardo. I'm still grieving for the loss of our son too, and I worry about what happened, happening again … but I won't stop trying to fall again because of it."
Zechs squeezed her hands gently. "I think it's far too soon Lucrezia!"
Noin sighed calmly, "Sally said, that she had no idea as to why it even occurred with me I never even came close to falling into the categories or factors that are possible causes of Placental Abruption. [N1]."
Zechs pulled his wife close to him, his arms wrapping tightly around her, his hand against the back of her head, his own resting on hers. "But it did and she did say that it does happen. What's more of a concern to me now is that because you've already had it happen to you once you're now even more at risk of it occurring again." He kissed her gently on the forehead, "In layman's terms my love, you're a high risk candidate and If I were to lose you, I…"
Noin placed a finger to his lips before silencing him with her own. "We should continue this at home, Zechs," she said softly.
He kissed her back, "Yes, you're right. Work isn't the place to discuss this." He offered her his arm, "Shall we?"
Looping her arm through her husband's she grabbed her keys off her desk and they headed out of the office.

Heero watched in awe as his partner managed to shove yet a third hot-dog down his gullet. It never ceased to amaze him just how much Duo could eat, yet he never seemed to gain a pound.
"Heero can I ha..."
"No!"
"Why?"
"Duo… I think that four coffees, two hot chocolates and three hot dogs, not to mention a side helping of fries and salad is more than enough!"
Duo pouted, "But, Heero I'm a growing boy and just like plants need nourishment to help them flourish and thrive, so do I…"
Heero raised an eyebrow in amusement, "Then I'll just have to stop in at the garden store on the way home and buy you some fertilizer, then you and the plants can flourish and thrive together."
Duo made a face and raspberried the dark haired man, "Mean, Heero, that's what you are… mean!"
Heero grinned and tapped him gently on the nose, "No, Duo… Mean is not me going out and buying you fertilizer so you can nourish and thrive. Mean is me not giving you sex tonight because you're being a right royal pain in the…"
"So shall we get a move on, then? We have things to do, places to be, people to ask questions, " Duo rambled as he got out of his seat and headed off towards the cafeteria's exit, "Come on, Heero…" He urged as he turned back to see his partner still seated in the cafeteria, "…You're holding things up!"

Grigson sat waiting for Damon to finish speaking with his father. After their little discussion on the `art of how to exacting revenge,' Mr. Dawson had requested to speak to Damon on his own.
Grigson was never too sure of Dawson himself and exactly where he was coming from. He had no qualms about getting Yuy back for the pain and torment he had caused them, but to involve pure innocents for the sake of the `cause' wasn't his idea of fair.
Fair, as far as Dawson was concerned, didn't cut it. Yuy was guilty as charged and the best way to get to Yuy was by going through his friends. His thoughts were disturbed as Damon exited his father's office and made his way over.
"My father has suggested we wait at home. He'll contact us as soon as his contact, contacts him."
Grigson grinned. "Does his contact's contact have to contact his contact first, before his contact's contact him?"
Dawson raised an eyebrow, smirked a little and shook his head, giving his friend an odd look. "Fuck, you're a dick."
Grigson stood and rubbed his hand over Damon's groin, "And the sooner we get home, lover, the sooner I can fuck you with mine.
The other young man groaned and leaned into the caress, pressing his lips firmly over his lover's. "Well, what are you waiting for? Let's go!" Damon grinned breaking the kiss and heading towards the exit. "I wouldn't mind a bit of relaxation after today."
Steve Grigson gave his lover a lopsided grin. "Neither would I lover, neither would I."

The medical officer finished bandaging Wu Fei's broken hand. The Chinese Preventer agent had remained expressionless the whole way through. If it hurt at all then he certainly never let it be known.
Sally watched from her bed as her husband was treated, she had called her associate in once the Chinese
man had regained his composure. The medical officer packed his med pack up and stood by the door. He turned to face Sally and gave her a reassuring smile, "Well, I guess I don't need to tell you all the details of what your husband needs to do, Dr. Po, so I'll just head out. If there's anything else you need from me, please, don't hesitate to ask."
Sally smiled despite herself being a generous amount of pain and nodded gratefully, "Thank you Dr. Mc Govern. I appreciate your offer."
With a slight nod of his head in acknowledgment towards Sally and one of respect directed at Wu Fei, Mc Govern exited the room quietly.
Wu Fei sat in silence and then dared to look over at Sally, who for some reason found all this quite amusing. "What?"
Sally smirked at her husband, her eyes piercing his and he suddenly found himself sporting a slight tinge of redness over his cheeks, "Well?" he dared to ask.
"Did you see the look on Duo's face when he came in before? " she began, trying to take his mind off the events of the past few hours. There were enough questions to be asked when the other two returned and she felt that a little laughter wouldn't hurt the situation any.
"No. I was somewhat preoccupied with the wall at the time of their intrusion," he stated blankly.
"Put it this way," she smirked, "I don't think he'll be in a hurry to call you anything else but Wu Fei after today."
Wu Fei snorted. "He may be my friend, but occasionally he's also an idiot!"
Sally sighed. So much for that idea. She opened her mouth to try something different but never got the chance. A knock on the door resounded from the outside.
"Stripper gram…" The door opened and Duo pranced inside, his braid floating in mid air and a heart shaped balloon attached to the end.
Sally laughed and Wu Fei gave his wife a sideways glance, "I rest my case."
Heero followed behind… way behind. "He just chased the clown from the children's ward half way down the street to get*that*." He pointed towards the offending balloon as he finally strolled into the room after his partner, who was still doing his prancey thing around the room.
"I think it's about time you got him neutered, Yuy," the Chinese man suggested
"The thought had crossed my mind, Chang."
Duo stopped mid prance. His hands flew downward protectively guarding his groin and he glared at the two men.
"LIKE HELL!" Duo cringed as he glanced over at Sally, "And don't think I'm letting you near me either," he winked, "I happen to like my family jewels; I'm rather attached to them yanno."
Sally held her sides as she laughed, it made her forget her ordeal momentarily and she was grateful for it. She'd noticed too, that even Wu Fei had lightened up a little. Duo may be a bit of a clown and `occasionally an idiot', but his heart was definitely in the right place.
Duo detached the balloon from his braid and bowing, he handed it to Sally. "For you," he grinned.
"Why thank you, Duo." She smiled. "That's so very sweet of you."
Wu Fei huffed. "It's getting late, I suggest you stop clowning around Maxwell."
Duo gave the Chinese Preventer agent a wink, "I hear ya Wu man."
"You were saying?" Wu Fei addressed his wife regarding their earlier conversation about Duo.
Sally laughed, "Well I guess the God of Death isn't afraid of you after all"
Duo raised and eyebrow. "Me, afraid of the Wu bear? Feh, that's funny, everyone knows that Wuffles here is just a great big pussy cat with attitude."
"If the vet isn't an option Yuy, I still have my Katana!"
"So, Sally… " Duo quickly began, changing the subject, "I hope you don't mind, but, Heero and I need to ask you a few questions about this afternoon
"Don't worry about me, Duo. I know the routine," she reassured him. "So what do you want to know?"
