C-Chan2: Not much to tell you guys.

Jim: Yeah, same here.

C-Chan2: It appears that Lloyd has gone missing, though I'm pretty sure that he has nothing to say as well.

Jim: *shrugs* Eh.

C-Chan2: Okay, here's another chapter for you.

The Captain of the Guard was not happy. This was the third time this month that Wufei had gone missing and it was the third time this month that Treize had to go searching for him. It was tiring and frustrating. If his men couldn't handle a single slave, how would they handle anything else? He glanced back at the small chain of men that followed him, their heads hanging slightly in shame. They had gotten an earful before they started their outing and were now uneasy around their captain. Rolling his eyes, Treize looked away from them, urging his horse into a trot.

He had searched since morning for the pesky dragon and now he was quite annoyed. It was well past lunch and that meant that he would miss the chance to catch the king before he headed out into the fields. He shuddered at the thought of mingling with the peasants and he brought himself back to the task at hand. He was searching for a sign that Wufei was in hiding here. They were now in the forest outside of the castle walls. Wufei had come here more than enough times. It gave the boy reasonable hiding space and since the sun barely parted through the trees, there were many shadows to blend in with.

He heard one of his men gasp and he looked back to find the man staring off to the left. The other men looked back at him, waiting to see if it was alright to ask the man a question. He growled in annoyance at their stupidity and he turned his horse around.

“What is it?”, he barked, startling the men.

The men all then looked back to the one who had gasped, the man hesitating before he gave Treize a salute. The captain sighed in frustration at that, it wasn't necessary that they salute every time they had something to tell him.

“A shadow, sir.”, the man reported, his voice almost breaking, “Just beyond those trees. It passed right by us, it did.”

As the man pointed off in the direction, Treize smiled as he looked where he was being shown. The shadow hadn't passed them as the man thought it had, he could see the silhouette of his slave. Wufei was watching them. If anything, he had turned himself into the hunter. This would be fun. He would play the boy's game for now. It would make his recapture all the more sweeter.

“Uncle!”

His nephew's call urged him to look back to find the young man galloping toward them. He didn't question his appearance, though it was odd to find him there. Zechs barely held company with him, so to find the boy rushing toward him was a bit peculiar.

“What is it, Zechs?”, he asked the boy as he arrived.

“It's about Wufei.”, he started, “When you find him you are not allowed to harm him.”

“Who are you to tell me how to take discipline with my slave?”, Treize asked, his nephew frowning, “I can do as I please.”

“By order of the His Majesty, you are not to harm him.”

“Heero?”, Treize asked confused, “He told you this?"

“I wouldn't lie to you, uncle.”

Heero was becoming far too irritating. He'd never even taken an interest in Wufei, now he felt he had the right to tell Treize how to treat him? Violet eyes were all that he was able to see and Treize's grip tightened on the reigns. The King's Own was to blame for this and he was sure that the prince had a hand in it as well. No matter, he had his own way of convincing the young man. He let his attention be brought back to the gathering of trees where Wufei had been and he swore under his breath to find that his slave was gone. As the boy had heard the message, he would draw out the search as long as possible. He looked to his nephew, the boy now much more interested in the shadows to his right.

“Nephew.”

His attention was brought back to his uncle, who looked to him with a frustrated scowl.

“Are you to join us on this search?”, he asked, the boy declining.

“No uncle, I must head back to the castle.”, he told him, “I want to return to the infirmary.”

“Whatever for? Are you sick?”

“No, uncle. However, that's where Duo is being held. I wish to visit him.”

That boy was held in the infirmary? The thought of it angered the captain even more. It was beginning to eat away at his nerves. This slave was gaining special treatment. No slave was held in the infirmary. They were taken to the doctors in the slave quarters. Now he definitely had to have a discussion with the king, he couldn't stand to see what would happen next.

“Head back and tell the king that I wish to have a word with him and him alone.”, Treize ordered, turning to start his search again, “I will return to the castle once I find Wufei, and I promise that I will try my hardest not to harm him.”

Zechs only had time to nod, before his uncle and his band of bumbling idiots rode off further into the forest. He had no intention of returning to the castle just yet and he waited for the sound of the horses to disappear into the distance before he looked to his right again. He had sworn that something was watching him there, yet now he didn't feel it. However, he was curious. The shadows seemed to be dancing and there was no wind to blow the trees. Climbing down off of his horse, he stepped forward cautiously, crouching as he came close enough to study one.

It moved as if it had a mind of its own, dancing left and right. He looked around to find that there were more and his curiosity grew. Turning back to the one that sat in front of him, he watched it slither up from the ground to dance before his eyes. He wasn't thinking much of what could happen and he let his hand reach out to touch it.

Before he even had the chance to reach for it, something jumped out of the trees, sending the shadows fleeing with loud screeches. Zechs, who had fell backward onto his backside, watched wide-eyed as whatever those things were scurry off. He had no idea what had scared them and then the answer was standing right in front of him. Ebony eyes were glaring down at him and Zechs gave a nervous laugh as he took to straightening himself.

“Hello, Wufei.”

He stumbled back as the boy pushed against his shoulders, his obvious annoyance written on his face. As the boy started a series of signals, Zechs tried his best to translate it. His uncle had taught Wufei a form of sign language so he would be able to communicate with Treize, though it was effortless since Wufei never signed a word to the man. As the boy signed what had to be the same thing again, Zechs tried his best to figure it out.

“What…are…you…doing?”, Zechs repeated as the boy signed.

He watched as Wufei folded his arms, his glare still set on the blond in front of him. He hated using this damn sign language, it was useless. The only one who would really understand him fully was Treize and damn it all to the hells, he was never going to use it with that man. He waited patiently for Zechs to answer, though it seemed that the older boy was still trying to translate. With an inaudible sigh, Wufei crouched to the ground, grabbing up a stick before writing his question over in the dirt.

“Why are you out here?”, Zechs read aloud, “So that's what it means?”

At Wufei's look, he apologized before answering the question.

“I was looking for my uncle. However, he's now gone and-”

He stopped short as Wufei held up a hand to quiet him, erasing what he last wrote to write something else.

“These forests are dangerous.”, Zechs read aloud, noting that Wufei had more, “Shadows have grown. They search for another within the castle walls.”

Duo. It was obvious now. The boy had told him that he was Shinigami, the son of Death. There was no question about it. Wufei's tap on his shoulder brought him back from his thoughts and he looked down to where the boy pointed.

“You must tell Duo? Why don't you tell him?”

Wufei only shook his head, before writing in the dirt, “I do not wish to go back.”.

“My uncle can't harm you.”, Zechs told him, taking Wufei's hand in his, “The king won't allow it. You can-”

He stopped short as Wufei's fingers rested against his lips to stop him from talking, the sloe-eyed boy giving him a small smile. It was hard to even find words now and he thought it best to not even try. Wufei returned to writing in the loose dirt, blue eyes watching as the words formed, “Trowa is searching for you. You must go back.”

“Come with me.”, Zechs pushed and Wufei shook his head, “You have to. Duo's in the infirmary, will you not visit him?”

Wufei's look of concern raised his spirits some and he watched as the dragon took to rubbing out the last sentence in the dirt to replace it with another.

“I will find my way to him in secret. You will go before me.”, Zechs read, before he looked up to Wufei, “You promise this?”

As Wufei rested his right hand over his heart, he mouthed the words “I promise”, giving the blond boy a smile. Zechs returned it, before they both stood; ready to go their separate ways. He wanted to say something else to the boy but he had no idea what, so he took to returning to his horse. As he mounted it he looked around to find the shadows were returning and according to Wufei, they were dangerous. He looked back to his uncle's slave, not really wanting to leave him here.

“Be careful.”, was all he said and he watched Wufei nod.

He was then riding off, leaving the boy behind. Wufei watched Zechs leave, knowing that it would now be impossible to even think about escaping. Something was binding him here. His ears caught the sound of returning horses and he took to returning to his haven in the treetops. Treize would find him sooner or later, but first he had to go and pay a visit to his new found friend.

Trowa now sat in the common area of his suite, his eyes studying the blonde boy that paced back and forth. He and Heero had managed to hold a civilized conversation after the king had checked on Duo and it would seem that his brother was becoming much unlike himself. Stoic he still was, but the constant air of anger that was held about him seemed to be slowly fading. Though he had been eager to talk more with his step brother, he had found that Quatre held a constant look of worry and he wanted to talk more in private. He was sure that whatever it was Quatre had on his mind, he would much rather not say in front of the king. So after rescheduling council meetings to begin again in two weeks and setting a lunch date with Heero, they left the king's company.

Quatre, who was still pacing, had been this way since they had reached and Trowa had waited. He was a bit tired of waiting, but he did not want to push his lover. He would tell him when he was good and ready. That gave way to a few more minutes of Quatre pacing back and forth and Trowa finally cleared his throat to grab his attention. As the young mage turned in his direction, Quatre turned worried eyes to the uni-banged prince.

“I'm curious to say the least.”, Trowa started, standing from his seat, “What has your mind so troubled?”

He walked closer to his lover, gently taking hold of his arms as Quatre raised sea-colored eyes to him.

“I'm not so sure if I should say.”, Quatre told him, “It concerns His Majesty the king.”

“What of him?”, Trowa questioned, his face holding a frown.

“I believe that I have tampered with something that was meant not to be found.”

At his words, Quatre could see that Trowa did not understand, so he guided the prince back to the table, where the two sat for a discussion.

“Today, when I calmed Heero, I found something that wasn't supposed to be found.”, Quatre began, “Something inside of his mind that I stumbled across.”

“Which was?”

“A Mind-Trap.”, Quatre answered, seeing Trowa's confusion, “It's a spell that's placed on a person to ensure that they can be easily persuaded by the one who put it there.”

“And who put it there?”, Trowa asked, “Someone in the castle?”

“The only other person I can think of is another mage.”, Quatre responded, “It held a mark, a signature if you will, like every spell that's cast by a mage, but I could not recognize it. This mage may not be acknowledged, just as I'm not known to the Magus Society. For all we know it could be anyone in the castle.”

Trowa let that bit of information sink in. He had no idea what to really think as of yet, though he wanted to know what would happen to Heero now that Quatre had managed to find this Mind-Trap.

“And this Mind-Trap.”, he began, his mind still contemplating every word, “You say that you've tampered with it? How so?”

“I broke it.”, Quatre answered, his face showing almost shame, “I didn't know what else to do. What if it was harming him? It had been weakened but I have no idea by what. If it had collapsed Heero would have been hurt in ways that I wouldn't know how to take care of. So I did what I could and I rid him of it. Though now I worry if the mage who put it there will know.”

“And if he finds that his spell has been broken, can he trace it back to you?”

“Yes.”, Quatre answered, “He or even she can trace it back to me. The spell I used to break Heero of his first will leave my mark in Heero's mind for a few days. That gives the mage even more time to recognize who the signature belongs to.”

Now Trowa had an idea why Quatre was worried. His status as a mage would be discovered by another and that meant it could be spread throughout the entire kingdom. Though he was legally bound to the prince, there was still the opportunity for the Magus Society or the kingdom itself to take the issue to the council members. The outcome of Quatre being taken away into temporary exile was just as high as his status as a slave keeping him by Trowa's side.

Though now he was as worried as his lover was, Trowa took Quatre's hand in an act of comfort, giving the younger boy a smile. He would try his best to at least seem that he wasn't as worried as he truly felt.

“It's alright.”, he told the blond, watching Quatre physically relax, “We'll just have to be as careful as possible. I'm only taking a guess here, but in order for another mage to recognize your mark, he'd have to find another spell that you've cast.”

At Quatre's nod he felt a bit calmer. The boy rarely did spells and he was sure that Quatre wouldn't cast any others any time soon.

“Just to be sure.”, Trowa said aloud, his eyes connecting with his lover's, “Try your best not to cast any spells. You told me once that you Mind-Speak with Duo and Wufei at distances. That's a spell as well?”

“Not so much a spell as it is a skill.”, Quatre explained.

“But it still bears your mark?”

Quatre's shake of the head was a relief. He didn't have to ask the boy to stop communicating with the other two slaves in that manner. Though he was sure that it was one order of his the blonde would never have followed. He rose from his chair to do a bit of pacing of his own, his stepbrother now on his mind.

“I'm not sure if we should inform Heero or not.”, Trowa pondered out loud, “Though I'm positive he has a right to know, I'm not particularly sure that he should. Yes it'll only make him vulnerable to another spell, but we can't risk him sending a ridiculously large search party for a mage we can't identify. We'll have to keep this to ourselves.”

Quatre silently agreed. Though now he was more curious than ever, how were they going to find the mage if he or she were good at hiding themselves?

“What will we do then?”, he finally asked aloud.

Trowa was at a loss, he had no idea what he could do and he was sure that he would have to think on this for a while. It wasn't everyday that he was approached with a problem as big as this.

“We'll have to see.”, he told his lover, returning to his seat, “For now, there's nothing we can do. We'll have to wait. I'm sure that this new found mage will reveal him or herself. We just have to be patient."

Duo was awakened at the tap on the window, violet eyes opening to the dim lighting of the room. Most of the candles had been snuffed out, save the candelabra that sat on the side table. With a yawn he sat up on the bed, stretching before he let his feet touch the floor. The tap on the window came harder and he made his way toward it, pulling it open and gazing out at the night sky. He hadn't been aware that he had slept the entire day through.

Hanging his head out of the window, he looked down towards the ground but found that no one was throwing rocks. So that could only mean. . .

The tap on his shoulder caused him to look up and he was met by a pair of black eyes. He returned the smile that was given to him and he pulled back into the window to allow the sloe-eyed boy to enter.

/I heard that you caused quite a stir today./, Wufei started, dusting off his clothes.

“The same could be said about you.”, Duo responded with a smirk, “It's safe to say that Treize has yet to find you.”

/I'll admit that either I've gotten much better at hiding or he's been slacking./, Wufei said walking to the bed and seating himself, /Though I much more believe that I've gotten better. Treize is not known to slack./

Duo took to seating himself beside the dragon, and he and Wufei both fell silent. It wasn't an awkward silence, but a silence none the less. They found that they both were staring outside of the window, where the stars were glittering across the night sky. Their presence was enough for the other, words weren't necessary, though Duo found that it was hard to not speak now that he had the ability.

“Where's your admirer?”, he asked with a teasing look to Wufei, “It's funny that he hasn't showed up yet.”

/I wouldn't put it past him that he'll show up at any moment./

“Eager to see him are we?”, Duo asked, gaining himself a glare.

He was also aware of the blush that tinted Wufei's face, the dim lighting enough to reveal it. Although it was fun teasing Wufei, he could feel for him. It was odd this reaction to someone else. He himself had the same reaction as of late with Heero. It meant nothing though; he would make sure of it. It was only this human body. He had no control over it.

The two heard a knock at the door and Duo turned his head to look at it. He wasn't sure who would come and visit him at this hour. Wufei the exception, he didn't think he would want any company. He turned back to Wufei to ask his opinion, only to find that the mute boy was gone. With a sigh he rose from his bed, walking to the door and slowly opening it. He was greeted by the kind but tired smile of the medic and he opened the door wider, finding Zechs standing behind him. Wufei was right.

“We're sorry to disturb you.”, the physician started gently, “Do you think you're up to some company?”

/Let him in./

It didn't seem that he had a choice, wherever Wufei was hiding, he had seen Zechs and wanted the young man there. Giving both doctor and noble a smile, Duo stepped to the side, indicating that Zechs had permission to enter. After Zechs had entered, the doctor bid his farewell and left. Closing the door, Duo looked to Zechs whose blue eyes searched the room.

“He's here if you're wondering.”, Duo announced, the dragon coming out of hiding.

He had taken refuge in the supply closet, stepping out at Duo's words. Duo watched as the two looked at each other, Zechs' lips forming a smile as the dragon took to blushing again. He had to say, though he was a bit miffed that the two chose to use him as an excuse to meet each other in secret. However, he was sure that Wufei would deny it if he was asked. He was still against accepting this…thing…whatever it was that these two had. Human emotions were ridiculous and he was sure that he would fight those emotions to the end.

“Oh, Duo.”, Zechs called, looking to the shadow, “Heero saw me on my way here, he says that he'll be here tonight.”

At the mention of the king and Duo grew angry at his reaction. The blush that tinted across his cheeks was caught by the young dragon who gave him a taunting smile.

/Eager to see him are we?/

“I am not!”, Duo snapped, huffing and crossing his arms childishly.

Zechs threw a questioning look in Wufei's direction, the ebony-eyed boy beginning to sign before throwing the idea aside altogether. It was pointless as Zechs would still have no idea of what he had said. He found that Zechs waked closer, ebony eyes looking to Duo and finding the shadow had turned his back to the two of them in a childish act of the cold shoulder. Zechs looked over his shoulder to the braided boy as well, turning back to Wufei with a smile as he found they weren't being watched.

Wufei found that his heart was now beating a mile a minute and he could only look up into blue eyes as the Zechs leaned in closer. As their lips were barely breaths apart, another knock at the door startled the two as well as Duo. Zechs looked to the young shadow in question receiving only a shrug. He returned to looking at Wufei, or he would have if the boy was still standing in front of him.

Duo had made his way to the door, opening it partially to peek out. He found the medic, who held a look that told him he would not like the visitor.

“I'm sorry to disrupt you, again.”, the doctor apologized, “But you have another visitor.”

Duo let his eyes look to the man standing behind the doctor and his eyes narrowed as he took in the sight of Treize. The man's visit had to have a motive behind it.

“Treize.”, he greeted coldly, though he didn't open the door.

At his uncle's name, Zechs felt his nerves stand on end. It was unnerving that his uncle would pay a visit to his own sick slaves, let alone one that he didn't own. Unless he had somehow come to learn that Wufei regularly visited the braided shadow, then Zechs could find no other reason as to why he was there. He heard the slight tapping at the window and he looked to the door where Duo still peeked through the slight crack. With his uncle still on the other side of the door, he made his way to the window, peeking out. He was nearly startled as Wufei landed on the ledge and he watched as ebony eyes spoke the good bye that Wufei's voice couldn't give.

“Another day then?”, Zechs asked and Wufei frowned.

He had no idea what he was promising to, though he didn't know a lot of things these past few days. He had been feeling entirely different toward the young man in front of him. He nodded anyway, placing his hand over his heart in his sign of promise. The two were aware of his uncle's annoyed voice and Zechs looked back to find Duo looking back at them urging them to hurry.

“You'd better hurry and go.”, Zechs said turning back to Wufei, “If you don't my unc-”

He was cut short unexpectedly as lips pressed against his and he felt himself grow dizzy. As Wufei pulled away, he could say nothing as the boy bid him a silent reply before disappearing from the window's point of view. It was at that moment that the door opened wider and Treize stepped in, watching his nephew stare dazedly out of the window.

“What are you doing, Zechs?”, he asked suspiciously.

“I. . . uh. . . was looking at the stars.”, Zechs lied, turning back to his uncle, “They're fascinating.”

Treize only raised an eyebrow at his nephew's unusual behavior, before he let himself return to the reason he had actually come here. On his trip back to the castle, he had recognized a familiar boy who had been scaling the castle walls. He was headed for the infirmary and Treize found his way there as well. It would seem that even if Wufei had been here, he was long gone.

“Is there any reason for your visit?", Duo asked him and Treize looked to the king's slave.

He stalked closer, watching as the boy tensed as he did. His hand took to cupping the boy's chin, his eyes looking down into fiery violet.

“I heard that you were here in the infirmary.”, Treize informed him, “I was only making sure you were on the road to recovery, though you seem to be doing well.”

“Don't touch me.”, Duo snarled, slapping Treize's hand away.

He watched the hand curl into a fist, slowly lowering to the man's side again. He looked around the room, his eyes searching for any clue that his slave was still there. However, he found that the boy was truly long gone, and he had no intentions to stay here with Heero's slave. He wasn't sure if he'd be able to keep himself from causing the boy harm. He was in need of a stern beating and he was more than anxious to be the one to deliver it. However, he wouldn't risk it. He was sure that Heero would do more than strip him of his title and rights. So with one last icy look to Duo, he turned to his nephew, who had returned to looking out of the window.

“I believe I shall take my leave.”, he announced, heading for the door, “Will you be joining me, Zechs?”

“No, uncle.”, he told the man, “I wish to say good night.”

“Suit yourself.”

With that his uncle left, slamming the door behind him. Duo glared after him even long after he was gone, until Zechs caught his attention with a tap to the shoulder. He looked to the blond who gave him a gentle smile and he felt himself calm.

“I guess I'll take my leave as well.”, Zechs said, his face showing he was more than happy, “Shall I wait with you for Heero?”

“No need to.”, a voice said from the door.

They both turned to find the king standing in the doorway, Zechs giving him a bow that was only waved away. Duo, though he found he was actually nervous, let his face show that he wasn't interested in anything the king had to say. His violet eyes glared at the young man and as Heero moved closer, he backed away.

“What do you want?”, he demanded, now finding he was backed against the bed.

“I believe that Zechs has told you I would come for you tonight.”, Heero clarified, violet eyes glaring to the blond who only slipped out of the room.

He looked back to the king, easing his way from between the bed and Heero. Not a place that he wanted to be stuck between.

“I thought you'd come for me in the morning?”, Duo asked, arms crossing, “What intentions do you have?”

Heero only shrugged, turning for the door and leaving a completely befuddled slave behind.

“If you want to know, you'll just have to follow me.”

Duo then watched him disappear without him. He was sure that the king would turn back for him, order him to follow like an obedient slave and everything would return to the way he was used to. However, Heero never turned back and Duo found himself staring at the empty doorway. He did try his best to stay put, but curiosity got the best of him and he found himself going to the door. As he walked out, he was startled as Heero took hold of his arm, having been waiting for him the entire time.

“I knew you couldn't resist.”

At Heero's smug smirk, Duo snatched his arm out of the king's hold, his eyes glaring daggers at the man. He knew he should have just stayed in the room.

“So what is it that you had to show me?”, Duo asked, exasperated, “If it's the inside of your bedroom, sorry to disappoint you, but I've already seen it.”

“No.”, Heero answered, seeing the shock on Duo's face, “I'd like to show you yours.”

At the words Duo felt himself go lax for the second time that day. His bedroom, what could Heero mean by that?

A few minutes later, Duo was watching wide-eyed at the large suite that Heero had led him to. According to the king, it was all his for the next two weeks.

“It was my mother's.”, Heero announced, Duo looking back to him, “I never let anyone use it after she died; until now. It's yours for the time being. The bedroom is behind the doors to your right and the doors to the left are your own bathing quarters.”

“Is a slave allowed to have all this?”, Duo asked, not sure why he cared.

Heero only smiled, moving forward to look around the room himself. It had been years since he stepped foot in here. The door hadn't been opened since the night his mother was buried and everything that she possessed was still in place. He made his way to the vanity mirror where he often found her and he let his finger run over the ivory comb. It was her favorite.

“No.”, he finally answered, picking up the ivory comb and returning to Duo, “But I'm the king and I can damn well do as I please. Here, you can have this as well.”

Duo could only watch as Heero rested the object in his palm, closing his finger around it. He had no idea what to say about this unexpected gift, so he opted for not saying anything at all.

“I want to show you something.”, Heero told him, leading him to the two door-sized windows.

He pulled them open, gently pushing Duo out onto the large balcony. Duo watched in wide-eyed amazement at the site of the star-lit country side. He had never seen anything like it before and he looked to Heero for an explanation.

“My mother had the best view of the kingdom.”, Heero answered, leaning onto the stone railing, “I thought you would enjoy it as much as she did.”

He pointed to the mountains in the horizon and Duo turned to look at them, gasping as he caught site of three dragons fly between the peaks.

“Dragons' Peak.”, Heero announced.

“Is that where Wufei's from?”, he asked, watching the dragons in interest.

“Most likely.”, Heero told him, “Treize did travel there once and he returned with Wufei.”

Duo then turned to Heero, finding colbat eyes looking back at him.

“Why give me this?”, Duo asked, his suspicion returning, “Why now?”

“I told you that tomorrow I would begin convincing you to stay here.”, he explained with a smile, “And I intend to start as early as possible tomorrow. You won't sleep in my presence so I figured that I would give you your own space. The further away you are from me, the better you'll sleep I'm sure. So for now, I bid you good night.”

Duo had no time to say anything, since Heero had already turned to go his way, leaving him on the balcony. As he heard the doors to the suite close, he looked back to the view beyond the balcony, aware of the forest and the screeches of his fellow shadows reaching his ears. Though his father had yet to reach him, he had sent Duo protection; servants that were there to take any life that dared to endanger his son's safety. He felt that he was now tired and he decided it was time he head to his bed; he had to wake up early in the morning. Though he was to say the least a bit wary, he was also still curious. He almost wanted to see how his master would surprise him next.
