The Long Road
Chapter 1

Duo peered through the reinforced glass window where another boy laid in a hospital bed, machines, wires and tubes surrounding and enveloping him. He grimaced when he saw the pink clad princess by the bedside, where he should rightfully be! The grimace turned in to a frown and he turned from the small window to sag down the side of the wall, ending up sitting on his ass and staying there for awhile, head cradled between his knees. He finally lifted his head when he heard the click of heels nearing the door, the sign that the royal pink bitch was leaving. He stood up quickly to act nonchalant as she walked out the door, sneering at Duo as she left. 'Man, I'd love to just send her to the Mars project and leave her there! Damn bitch.' Duo thought, not giving her a second glance.

Duo walked in to the hospital room, trying to not let the sight depress him. Heero was pale and had lost most of his muscle tone, looking more like a boy of 12 than a 17 year old killing machine. After his collapse with the Mariemaia incident, Heero had been rushed to the hospital by none other than the Pink Princess and immediately went in for surgery. 'You would've never known it had you looked at him before the collapse, just a few bruises and a limp, but underneath that was a collapsed lung, lacerated kidney and liver, many broken bones including his entire right side of ribs. We all were a little roughed up, but he had it the worst.' Duo thought. Sally had convinced them all it would be best to keep Heero in a medically induced coma to let his body heal otherwise he would not allow them to heal and keeping him sedated would be hard with the high drug tolerances he had. Now it had been near one month and the doctors still could not get his lung to stay inflated and his injuries that had always been quick to heal, were healing at the slowest rate after surgeries to replace his kidney and repair his liver. 'Almost like he's just given up on living.' Duo thought sadly while taking one of the cold bony hands in his hand.

He sat there for several hours, knowing Heero was not going to wake up, yet still hoping for it the same. Duo was still there when Sally came by to do her nightly check. "How's it going, Sally?" He asked tiredly.

"Just another day at the hospital, you know how that is." Sally replied with a wane smile.

"When do you think we can bring him out of this coma? Get him back on track and rehabilitated?" This was a nightly ritual they had at this point. She would tell him it just takes time and that it will hopefully be soon. The fact that soon had been through 2 months already was a moot point.

"Actually I wanted to talk to you and the others about that. There's a new therapy that's in it's trial stages, but I think it might be the key to finally getting his body to function properly without all these machines. It's called Regen therapy and focuses on a photon therapy to stimulate healing and growth." She sat down in the other chair, the circles under her eyes and the tiredness coming out, "We can't keep him like this forever. If his body doesn't start working appropriately I'm scared his body will start shutting down. His body is wasting away, no matter how much we up his nutrition. He's lost weight he didn't really have to lose and at this point, we're nearing the critical point in his body mass with him weighing only 74lbs. I can't get him to put on weight, but we've finally stopped him from losing more. I need your permission to start the Regen therapy. We'll have to bring him out of the coma, so we're going to need at least 2 of you here in case things don't go well..." Her voice trailed off with an unsure edge.

Duo nodded, "At this point I think I can speak for all of us in saying that we're prepared to do anything to get him back. The question is whether he wants to come back or not." He looked back at Heero, the near peaceful look on his face belying the fact that he wasn't truly asleep.

Sally nodded, "I don't think he planned on surviving after the war. Rather, I don't think he was trained to think about the after." She said with a grimace. "Maybe you and the others can convince him when he's up. I'll make sure he's started on a light dose of painkillers right before he's woken up so he won't be groggy or pain laden."

Duo snorted, "Yuy? Pain? I thought they were one in the same. He's the ultimate masochist."

Sally laughed and placed a hand on Duo's shoulder briefly, "He'll get better." She gave him a knowing smile and left the room.

Duo watched her leave the room, wondering what that smile was about. He looked back at Heero, the urge to protect the boy strong. If it weren't for the machines, he'd wrap Heero up in his arms and keep him there. He let himself get lost in more pleasant thoughts until he looked at the clock, well past 11:00PM. Duo groaned, stretching from his cramped position in the chair. He smiled, gave Heero a kiss to the forehead and left back to his home for the rest of the evening.
