Ch 1.
"Cigarettes?" asked Heero.
The bound and gagged woman shook her head slowly, as if hesitant to insult the man.
Heero almost felt sorry for this woman. Almost. The thing with the killing business
was, the more you killed, the less you became emotional with death. The last time Heero felt
really bad about a job was when he had to kill his ex-partner.
Heero lit one up for himself. "That's good. You shouldn't smoke. It's bad for your health"
The woman seemed to be very nervous and tense. 'Maybe she senses that the time is near', he thought.
Heero felt like talking. "Can I ask you a question?"
The woman stared at Heero.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Ha. You can't talk with your mouth gagged, can you?"
He walked over to her and untied the gag around her mouth. She felt the immense relief
arond her Jaw and neck as blood rushed to flow and circulate.
Heero sat back down next to her. "Now, let me ask you something?"
The woman fought to make her mouth work. It seemed she had forgotten how to talk. Heero
had seen this many times. People often forget how to talk when they don't do it for several
weeks.
"Y-y-ye-es"
Heero smiled at her effort. "Ok. Now. Let's say you were going to die right now."
The woman started panicking.
"Woah, woah, relax, relax. This is a hypothetical question, allright? I ain't gonna kill
you right now. Just relax"
The woman started to calm down.
"Now, I'm just asking you this out of curiousity. Not with some sick, perverted intent. I'm just
fasicnated with human nature, that's all, allright?"
The woman studied Heero for awhile before she nodded.
"Ok...Let's say you were going to die right now. And before you died, you had the opportunity
to do one thing...one thing that you wanted to do...whatever... what would it be?"
Heero was surprised when the woman smiled. "To kill my husband for putting me in this
situation with you."
"That's it? that's what you want to do? Revenge? That is your last act one earth? No prom,
no walk on the beach, no sex, no last meal? You wanna kill your fucking husband?"
"Yes..very much so."
"Interesting"
The woman decided to play his game. "Surprised... that a woman wants revenge as her last act?"
Heero seemed amused. "Lady, I've been in this buisness for 10 years. Nothing surprises me
anymore. For example, you know what the most common answer is that I get from women on this question?"
"What?"
"Most say they want to have sex. Especially the old ones."
"That's surprising..."
"It is...but you know what's even more surprising?'
"what?"
"Men often told me they wanted to see their wives, or mothers, or children before they die."
"Huh..."
"Now, why do you think that is?"
"What is?"
"Why do women want to have sex and men want to see their family? Intuitively, you would
think women would think family first and men with sex, right?"
"Right."
"So, why do you think that is?"
"I don't know... why?"
Heero frowned. "I don't know either."
They sat together in contemplative silence for awhile. Their thoughts were interupted
by a shrill, loud telephone ring.
Heero got up quickly, "I have to get that"
The woman seemed visibly afraid. The decision on her life would be made by whoever was
on the other line.
Heero picked up the phone. "Yeah? Everything is fine here...{pause} What do you mean
it didn't work out....{pause} Well, where is he?.....{pause} Well, are you sure?...{pause}
Can't you check again?........{pause} Hey, let's not jump the gun here, maybe he's still
trying to.......{pause} yeah......{Pause} yeah.......{pause} I understand.....{pause} I'll
take care of it."
Heero hung the phone down and closed his eyes down for awhile. He knew what he had to do
now. With a dangerous, dark efficiency, he moved swiftly towards his suitfcase on a table and opened it.
"Heero?....Heero?....Is everything allright?"
Heero ignored her and took out a silencer out of the suitcase. He checked to see that the
ammo clip was still in.
"Heero?...please...answer me" pleaded the woman.
Heero did not feel like killing her. He knew it was a mistake to be nice to her and get
to 'know' her. He had a bad habit of making friends with his victims. He knew now that he would
not be able to sleep tonight.
"Heero....please...."
Heero walked over to her, crouched down, and clamped her mouth softly with his hands.
"Listen to me, Jill. I have some bad news. Your husband did not come through with the money
that he stole from my client. It seems that he split town."
Jill started crying.
"I want to thank you, Jill...thank you for being a good friend...and a good listener for the last
couple of weeks. I hope..that..you...I hope..that.."
Jill was sobbing. "P-plea-se...do-on't ki-i-il me...pl-eas-ee...He-e-ro"
"I'm sorry. I can't do that. I wish I did not have to kill you. I'm a professional. This is
my bread and butter. I've killed more people than you can imagine."
Jill tried to place her hands on his cheek. Heero quickly pushed them away.
"Look...I've gotten to know you, yeah. I like you, yeah. I won't like it, but I have to
do it."
"B-b-ut why?"
Heero quickly stood up and faced away from her. He wiped a tear away from his face. He
turned around and aimed the silencer at her.
"Ok, Jill....I'm gonna give you a choice. Do you want it in the head or the heart?"
"P-p-please...d-on't..do..this..Heero" Jill was covering her face with her hands.
"SHUT THE FUCK UP AND MAKE A FUCKING CHOICE! HEAD OR THE HEART?"
"P-p-lease....."
Heero opened fire on her face. He was surprised at how angry he was at Jill.
Surprised at how she had gotten to his head. He hadn't shed a single tear since...since...
he couldn't remember.

Heero opened the door to his apartment and went inside. He was exhausted, both mentally
and physically. He switched on the light. He could see that his apartment was a mess. He saw
cat food and feces everywhere.
"Mr.snuggles! Mr.snuggles! What did I tell you about keeping the apartment clean?"
Mr.snuggles the cat came up to Heero and rubbed lovingly against his leg.
"Mr. snuggles. Don't try to suck up to me now. I told you I would be gone a few days...I
come back...now, look at this place."
Mr.snuggles gave him a pathetic meow.
Heero looked blankly at Mr.Snuggles. "I suppose that's cat saying for..'I missed you'"
Mr.Snuggles meowed again.
Heero sighed and picked him up from the air and gave him a hug. "I missed you too, boy. What
did I do? Well, Uncle Heero had to kill another person today. Don't worry...she was...no one
important."
Mr.Snuggles looked at him with a blank expression.
"Well, don't look at me like that. Someone has to put food on the table, right?"
Mr. Snuggles meowed.
"Exactly."
Heero put Mr.Snuggles down and went over to his laptop on the desk. He sat down and turned
it on:
[GOOD EVENING HEERO YUY. PLEASE TYPE YOUR PASSWORD]
Heero typed. {Mr.Snuggles}
[PLEASE WAIT...VERIFICATION IN PROCESS.......VERIFICATION CONFIRMED]
[HEERO YUY. YOU HAVE ONE NEW MESSAGE. WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THEM?]
{NO}
[WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO?]
Heero thought for a second, then typed, {TALK WITH CONTRACTOR}
[THANK YOU. PLEASE WAIT UNTIL THE OTHER PARTY COMES ON-LINE]
Heero waited a minute until a message came on-screen.
[HELLO, HEERO. THAT WAS A GOOD JOB YOU DID. VERY CLEAN, VERY PROFESSIONAL]

[STRAIGHT TO THE CHASE AS USUAL, AREN'T YOU?]
{DO YOU HAVE A JOB OR NOT?}
[I MIGHT...I MIGHT...]
{WELL?}
[I'M SENDING A PHOTO RIGHT NOW]
Heero waited patiently. Two minutes later, a picture of a young woman was printed out of
his fax machine. She was very good-looking, he thought.
Heero typed, {WHO IS SHE?}
[HER NAME IS RELENA PEACECRAFT. THE DAUGHTER OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. YOU

{I DON'T WATCH THE NEWS}
[WELL YOUR JOB IS TO KIDNAP HER AND STAY WITH HER UNTIL YOU ARE GIVEN FURTHER ORDERS. DO

Heero stared at the laptop for awhile. "Yes....goodluck..."
