Gundam Wing Fan Fiction ❯ The Psionic Saga ❯ Chapter Seven ( Chapter 7 )
Chapter Seven
Duo had woken to the most extraordinary pain he could imagine. It was accompanied by a strange uneasiness that he had focussed on like the lifeline it was. He knew if he could just block out the pain he would figure it all out. Unfortunately he had been right. As soon as he pushed it all aside the uneasiness manifested itself as memories…memories he would rather forget. And yet, he was intrigued…
Something was nagging, pulling him down into deeper thoughts that were only processed by the darkest part of his subconscious. That part of him that was still an orphan desperate to find any way to survive. He was drawn down…
Shinigami rules here! His mind screamed and Duo was thrown awake, completely off balance and aware of every tiny scrap of injury done to him.
Unfortunately, he was also very much aware of how it had been done. Forcing himself into a sitting position, Duo poked at one of the hot red lines and winced. He had never felt anything quite like it!
He vaguely recalled waking once before and what he had told Heero about the device. It was filed away with all the other things he was filing away, his mind in overdrive as it tried to escape the pain by keeping busy.
"Duo?"
Quatre was rushing over to him. The small blonde had been reading through something on his desk. Duo recognised it even from this distance.
"My assignment!" He yelped excitedly, leaping out of the bed and rushing to grab a hold of it. He kept moving about the room; anything to avoid the pain. He paced, reading through his own words, vaguely aware of Quatre's wide eyes following him around the small room.
"Did you find it? The reference I was talking about?" Duo looked up, waiting for Quatre to respond.
The small blonde shook his head, no. Duo gaped.
"Well, I only just managed to get the assignment back off the teacher!" Quatre protested. "I've read through it about ten times, but I couldn't find anything about your condition!"
Duo flipped through to the fourth page, vaguely noticing the A+ on the front, and skim read to what he was looking for. It was a nonsense paragraph he had added when his mind got off track. He had left it in there because he knew Professor G, who loved anything slightly demented and scientific, would love it.
::Of course, if the human mind were capable of higher thought patterns, or simply more sensitive to the natural environment, and the brainwave remained unaltered from its original state despite its heightened ability, it might result in several types of kinesics previously untried. Forms of kinesics that might be more capable of understanding relationships between spirits and hence broadening the human conception of being::
Duo held the page up for Quatre's inspection, but the blonde only looked more baffled. Duo sighed, looked down at himself and winced.
Quatre, knowing exactly what Duo wanted, grabbed Duo's priest's outfit from the clean laundry basket and handed it over. Duo wasted no time, hauling on the clean clothes and hurrying for the door.
"Wait! Where are you going! You can't go alone, and we have to leave a note!"
"Library," Duo answered simply, waiting impatiently for Quatre to finish the note before he grabbed the blonde's wrist and charged out the door.
Duo knew he was babbling something, but he doubted Quatre understood a word of it because he himself didn't know what he was saying. It was just words to calm his nerves and keep him occupied. Every part of his brain was focussed on something to the point it would have been painful if his body weren't telling him exactly what pain was.
The library was in a separate building to the rest of the school, just off the north wall. Duo often thought it a nice touch, putting it as far away as possible from the gym. As if jocks couldn't read. Hah!
Duo nodded kindly to the librarian as he charged through the door, hauling Quatre along in his wake. The librarian only shook her head, a small laugh escaping her lips. She was accustomed to her favourite student's bizarre antics.
Duo headed straight for the back of the reference section. He had hoarded several books on the back shelf that no one else seemed to use that came in handy for more of his mundane machinations. He thumbed over the spines and grabbed two, throwing them into a cubicle. He sat and began his search, aware of Quatre looking through his private stash in wide-eyed awe. Now the blonde had a small idea where the ideas for some of his pranks had come from. Not to mention some of his bizarre ideas…
"Duo, was this what you put in Wufei's microwave?"
Quatre was holding up a book. The open page was book-marked and had a funny little device that would, if made correctly, borrow the microwave's power and blow, without damaging the microwave, yet causing a huge rolling wave of electricity that would have had Wufei's hair standing straight for a week.
Duo shrugged, a guilty grin on his face as he turned back to the book he was thumbing through. Chuckling to himself, Quatre replaced the book and turned up at Duo's shoulder. Duo felt a little uncomfortable with the blonde so close and finally had an inkling as to why Heero had decided to paint a thick red line down the centre of their room.
"What are you looking at?"
Duo looked from the book to Quatre's confused face and sighed heavily. If this was how Quatre was going to react, what would the others do? Still, the further through the pages Duo got the more he knew he was right. How was a mystery, but it was glaringly obvious someone had passed the boundaries of the human psyche.
Luckily, Heero chose that moment to thunder his way into the library, Trowa and Wufei on his heels. Duo took one look at the way Heero's eyes were set in a hard glare and winced.
"You went after them, didn't you?"
All three boys blushed. Duo couldn't believe it; he had made Heero blush! He felt like leaping out of his chair and doing a happy dance. He settled for jumping up, planting his hands on his hips and glaring.
"Do you have any idea what they could have done to you?" Duo snapped, taking his time to glare at each one before grabbing the book from the table and slamming it hard into Heero's chest. Heero winced but seemed pleased by the pain. Duo reached out, touching the white mark on Heero's cheek and hissed. It was cold as ice.
"And you call me a Baka!" He steamed, actually pleased by his own anger; it was taking his mind completely off the way his body was screeching at him.
Heero wasn't paying him any attention. He was reading the page Duo had thrust at him, his eyes widening in horror. Duo was right; they had had no idea what they were up against.
"But, Duo…surely this isn't possible?" Wufei was reading over Heero's shoulder, his jet eyes confused by what he was reading.
"Historically it is not possible, but the human species is in a constant state of evolution, and cases have been popping up for hundreds of years. It's only logical that they would become more widespread and that eventually those with the…mutation…would band together." Duo started pacing again, trying to gather all his thoughts and figure out which ones had which ability. It was a slow process as he didn't really know what the abilities entailed; no one did. It was not something you could really find in a book that wasn't based on assumptions and wild guesses.
"So," Heero looked up from the book, his eyes slightly shocked. Duo grinned; that was two points he had won today to chalk up against Heero's hundreds. "You're saying we're up against a bunch of Psychics?"
"No, not psychics," Duo shook his head as he stopped his pacing. "Pcionicists."
"What's the difference?" Quatre asked, intrigued. He knew what a psychic was; some people thought his empathic abilities were slightly psychic, but he had never heard of a Pcionicist.
"Let me put it this way," Duo grinned evilly, gathering them all closer. He grabbed the second book from the table he had been using and read in a funeral tone.
::: Psionicists are similar to psychics only their abilities are not related to the mind. Rather they are able to manipulate immaterial things with differing forms of kinesis. Were Psionicists to grow powerful enough to utilise their abilities, the most powerful Psionicists would be in the fields of Magnokinetics and Electrokinetics. With these two elements Psionicists would be able to manipulate Bioelectricty and electro magnetic fields. Unltimately, they could destroy the genetic make-up of a human being:::
