The Silent Soldier

A.N; hmmm, shouldn't be too depressing but Heero Yuy fans may find that they'll cry (not that I'm that good at writing very emotive stuff). Well, read and enjoy my buddies

Disclaimer: As if it's not obvious enough, no I do not own Gundam Wing, shame though…

Author: June Bug (baby!)

The sun sat as high as it could possibly get in to the sky. The tree's sat and shaded over the newly placed grave and headstone. Outside the shade it was hot, the other headstones were hot but the new one was cool, still cold, as though it had only just been placed there but it hadn't. It had been there a year and was always in shade, protected from vandals and rascals that roamed the street and sprayed graffiti on all the headstones, not respecting the dead and restless. The grave was well kept and well looked after by one, one who had cared so much for the deceased and one who was there the minute it happened. No one said being a protector of the earth would be easy but no one ever thought about death. Not that any of them were scared of death but still, the impact it made on the living was something to think about.

He shielded his give-away violet eyes from the sun as he walked over to the grave to place some flowers down. It had been one year since he died, passed away, no longer existed on earth. His long brown hair flicked from side to side as he walked past the tree's and then stopped and stood in front of the headstone, trying not to walk on top of the dead soldier. He placed the flowers down and pulled out the old ones. He then pulled off all the moss and weeds that had grown in the last month. He visited each month, just out of respect and love, trying his best to keep the area prim and proper.

After positioning his flowers so as they stood on their own he took his seat. He flicked his fringe out of his eyes and began to talk.

"How have you been since I last saw you?" He asked. He then nodded as though he had just heard an answer and was agreeing with it. "Nothing's happened. It's been quiet, everyone still thinks about you." Duo smiled and looked at the headstone, reading the inscription on it.

'Loved by many, respected by the rest, here rests the silent soldier.'

Duo nodded in agreement again. 'The silent soldier' was certainly a good way of describing him. He then laughed. He was familiar was the silence that he often got from Heero Yuy whenever he said something ridiculous or maybe in his mind serious. Duo Maxwell flicked his fringe again and pulled up a weed. His ears then jumped as he heard a voice. He turned only to see a familiar face. The face smiled back.

"You here as well?" He asked. Duo nodded. He signalled for the person to sit, they did so obediently.

"I can't believe it's been a whole year." The person said. Duo shook his head.

"I can still see it in my head, every time I close my eyes, I see it over and over." Duo closed his eyes again, wishing that the new arrival could see inside his head.

Flames already surrounded his body but he was still fighting, still trying to convince Duo that he should run while he still could. Duo stayed put while he saw his buddy fighting off flames and attackers. If he moved another step that would be the end of both himself and Heero. He didn't want to take that risk, if there was anything he could do to keep them both alive then he was going to do it.

"Duo just run!" Duo shook his head. Trying not to move his feet yet trying to untie himself. His feet were free to walk anywhere but his arms were tied behind him. All around him were switches on the floor. Some that he couldn't see for the flames were covering them. If he took a step forward he could fall in to the heat and die, without even being able to get up and to save Heero. If he stayed were he was until he was untied then maybe he could still save them both. A Black Soldier then ran for Duo. Duo shook his head and turned on the spot causing the Soldier to flip over Duo's back and in to the flames. Duo then turned back to keep watch of Heero. All he could see was a fire wrapped figure still fighting the men in black outfits.

"Heero!" Duo cried. He was still tugging on the rope that was stopping him from helping Heero. There was a rail just above him. If he could just reach that then he could climb along it, pick Heero up and then climb over the fire and too safety. They were both wearing fireproof suits but they wouldn't last long, not in a fire like that. That was the only reason Heero was still alive. Duo looked around again, the fire was getting closer to him and he was feeling hotter and hotter. After tugging and tugging on the ropes that were stopping him from helping and fighting they finally snapped. Duo smiled and nodded, as he was proud of himself. He looked up to the rail and placed his hands on them.

Even through the gloves he was wearing the bar was far too hot to carry his whole body weight, he would lose his hands no doubt if he carried himself. He quickly looked around for another plan.

"Heero! Are you okay?" Duo called.

"You idiot I told you to…" there was a gap in Heero's speech. Duo could definitely hear someone being punched or kicked. "…get out of here. So do it, I'll be alright. I was trained for this. You weren't." Duo shook his head. That didn't mean that he was just going to give up.

"No chance, I'm here for you!" Duo cried and he kicked an oncoming Black Soldier who fell with great pain on to the floor. The fire was getting more and more violent. Duo looked around the room for some sort of escape route. There was a fire exit door. If he took out as many Black Soldiers as he could then he and Heero could get to the fire exit door and be fine.

"Heero, the fire exit, now!" Duo cried. Duo watched Heero turn and looked at the door but before he even had time to acknowledge that that was the way out he cried out the more terrifying scream of pain Duo had ever heard. He looked at Heero's eyes through his balaclava. He couldn't tell what was wrong. He had to do something.

"Duo go!" Heero cried. His voice wasn't strong, it was weak, and there was something seriously wrong. Duo shook his head and made his way to Heero, fighting his way through the Black Soldiers, simply pushing them in to the fire and to their death. Finally he reached Heero who simply fell in to his arms. Duo couldn't believe it. He then turned and looked at the fire exit. He then lifted Heero over his shoulder and headed for the door.

"It's okay buddy, you'll be just fine." Duo said, from what little he knew about first aid was that he should 'keep talking to the patient' but that was about it. As he finally reached the fire exit door he shoved it open and fell in to the outside world. He lay Heero down and rolled him to stop the oxygen getting to the fire so as Heero wouldn't be covered in fire any more. He then turned back and tried to shut the fire in to the building. He then took care of himself and rolled along the floor. As quickly as it had all happened Duo was by Heero's side. He took the balaclava off and looked at Heero's face and kissed him on the head.

"It'll be alright. What's wrong?" Duo asked. He tapped Heero gently on the cheek. He opened his eyes and gave a look of great pain. It then became obvious to Duo that there was a pool of blood forming underneath Heero. He shook his head. "Blood? No, we don't want that." Duo shook his head, falling in to a useless state of shock. He looked at Heero and tapped his cheek again. "It'll be alright, I'm here, we just have to wait for someone to come and get us. Right Heero? Heero?" Duo looked in to the blackened face then shook his head. "Come on buddy, you have to keep talking to me. Heero?" Duo tapped Heero's cheek again then moved his whole head from left to right. "Heero, come on, keep talking to me. Please, I need you buddy, I can't make it home on my own, you know what…" Duo sniffed and wiped tears from his eyes. His subconscious was telling him the truth but his conscious didn't want to believe it. "…you know what I'm like was directions." Duo sniffed again and looked at Heero's lifeless face. "Buddy no." Duo hung his head and then looked away as he did his worst job yet and shut Heero's eyes.

He shook his head and then his own body started shaking as the shock finally hit home.

Duo opened his eyes again as he relived the moment that Heero died, over and over again. Wufei nodded and sympathised with Duo. Duo hung his head again.

"He died in front of me, you know?" Wufei nodded. "I…there was nothing I could do either, I was just stuck on my own, I didn't know what was wrong with him, there was nothing I could of done and I feel that it was all my fault." Wufei shook his head.

"There was nothing you could have done so it wasn't your fault. You didn't even know what had happened to him." Wufei said. Duo looked at him and smiled.

"I guess, but I really loved him you know, he was my best buddy and he died right in front of me, I see it over and over, I don't know how much more I can put up with it." Duo closed his eyes

Flames already surrounded his body but he was still fighting, still trying to convince Duo that he should run while he still could. Duo stayed put while he saw his buddy fighting off flames and attackers. If he moved another step that would be the end of both himself and Heero. He didn't want to take that risk, if there was anything he could do to keep them both…

Duo opened his eyes, it was always the same, always started at the same point, he never missed anything out and he never found out what it was that actually killed Heero, whether it was a gone, or poison or a new weapon, developed but the Black Soldiers. He would never know and yet he wished his did.

The two of them sat in silence for a while but they both turned round when they saw Relena's unhappy face looking at them both. She attempted a smile but there was no point in her hiding her unhappiness so she placed her flowers down, wiped her eyes, gave a small cry and walked off again. After a short while Wufei then left, probably because he felt uncomfortable in the silence. So it was only Duo.

"I wish I could just talk to you again." Duo said. He then lifted his head and looked at the headstone, reading it again and nodding in agreement. 'The silent Soldier.' He was certainly being silent now. Just one more word, just one more kiss. Duo hung his head then moved in to a position where he was laying, almost by Heero's side. He pulled up a small strand of grass and put it in his hair and then sighed.

"Duo?" Duo looked up and saw Trowa and Quatre standing by the tallest tree. They walked over to him and placed two bunches of flowers over the grave.

"How have you been?" Quatre asked and he sat down by Duo. "It must be tough, a year and all that." Duo nodded but didn't say anything. Quatre turned to Trowa and gave him a look as though to say 'he's getting worse.' Duo felt this and looked up.

"I'm okay I guess, this is the first big milestone, it should get easier after this though." Duo gave a half smile. Quatre nodded and smiled.

"You can't think it's bad that he died. Think about the good times you and he had." Duo nodded and thought for a moment then smiled and gave a slight laugh. Quatre looked at Trowa again.

"But you don't have to tell us." Trowa said with a cheeky smile. Duo nodded and looked to the headstone again.

"But something doesn't seem right." Quatre turned back to Duo.

"What do you mean?" Quatre asked.

"He was buried in the shade, it's so cold here as though he's only jut been buried but we know he hasn't. It seems so fresh as though he's not letting go." Duo said. Quatre looked confused so Duo went on. "Ever since I he was buried I've been thinking. I've visited him once a month. As first you expect it to be cold, but now, even after a year, it's still cold as though part of him doesn't want to let go. Part of him is still here with us, all the other graves a warm, they've all been here a while and no so has Heero but his is still cold, still fresh. He's not going to let go easily." Duo smiled and turned to Trowa and Quatre. "I just know it, I can feel, he's still here with us." Quatre looked to Trowa and they both shrugged. Trowa than sat down and looked at the headstone

'Loved by many, respected by the rest, here rests the silent soldier.'

Yeah that was it, it was depressing too, if you want to moan about it then do if you want to be nice about it then do, ^.^ thank you for reading it though.
