Bright blue eyes widened perceptively, at the words, "W-what?" the boy asked incredulously, turning to look at the taller boy next to him.
Grinning from ear to ear, the braided vampire repeated himself, "We're home," he said sweeping his arm out to display the archaic castle before them.
Raising an eyebrow, Heero glared defiantly, "No, we're not home. You are home," he argued.
Smirking seductively, Duo corrected the shorter boy, "We are home."
Tired from the walk and the concert, the Japanese simply sighed and gave in, knowing he would be leaving whether the braided man allowed it or not. He closed his eyes and continued forward past the gates.
Duo walked down the narrow gravel path, his footfall silent, but Heero's crunched as the rocks moved beneath his steps. They passed a large ivory fountain as they made their way to the large wooden doors. The statue on the fountain was of a woman with a veil over her hair, her arms stretched upward, her gaze heavenward, and her mouth open in silent pleading. Looking closer Heero's brows shot upward, noticing the streams of blood flowing down her face in a mimic of tears.
Duo's braid moved as he turned to see what had captured his companion's attention, only to see the statue of the crying woman. His eyes softened briefly as memories flooded him, but he quickly suppressed them and pulled the boy away from the stone figure.
"Duo?" the boy asked, "Who is she?" he finally turned to see his protector, only to find his violet eyes were shadowed.
"Someone who died a long time ago." he answered grimly, and continued finally reaching the steps that lead to the foreboding double doors. Heero watched as the older lifted a large, leering knocker, with the gnarled face of a demon, hissing as if in pain. The iron protested and creaked as it was stiffly lifted, and let go to release a large booming knock.
Jumping slightly at the unexpected noise, Heero unconsciously stood closer behind Duo, huddling slightly behind the man's taller figure. Feeling the other boy's heat on his back, Duo silently held his hand out behind him, wiggling his fingers slightly, in an understanding invitation. Heero blinked down at the hand, and took it without understanding his own movements.
Suddenly the double doors flew open, causing Heero to briefly squeeze the braided vampire's hand in surprise. Smirking at the singer's jumpiness, Duo slowly pulled him forward into a long, dimly lit passageway.
With wide eyes, Heero searched the room curiously, "Duo-"
The tall vampire walked along the corridor, pulling the boy behind him, as he distractedly answered, "What is it?"
Flicking his midnight blue's back and fourth Heero continued, "I thought the other ancients lived here as well?"
Duo finally turned to look into his companion's questioning eyes, "They do." he said softly, "They are probably asleep." he added nonchalantly.
"Asleep?" Heero asked in disbelief. "Why would they be asleep?" he asked brows knitted in confusion.
Duo smirked, "Well Quatre's a fledgling still, so he needs his rest, and Trowa..." he trailed off grinning. The smaller boy silently raised an eyebrow in questioning. "Trowa thinks of other things to do with his fledgling." Heero's eyes widened momentarily and a light blush spread over his cheeks.
"I think we should sleep now, if you want to talk tomorrow." the violet-eyed boy stated seriously as they came upon a beautiful, grand staircase. Heero nodded in answer as he slowly followed, the tall boy, their hands still clasped together.
Reaching the top of the stone staircase, the two slowly turned into a dim hallway, with merlot-colored walls and gold trimming. Small bronze chandeliers, hanging daintily from the ceiling, lit the hallway walls, their teardrop crystals reflecting light against the boys' skin. On the walls were paintings from all eras in art.
Heero silently admired the pieces, but soon began to feel the lag of his journey. With slightly drooping lids, he blinked when they came upon a large door at the end of the hallway. Duo effortlessly pushed the door open, releasing the hand within his own. Cobalt eyes scanned the dark blue room with flecks of silver, on the ceiling resembling stars, and a thin crescent moon. In the middle of it was a huge bed, at least four feet high, with violet, black and blue sheets drawn over it.
Heero walked over to the bed, fingering the small angels carved in it, "You don't sleep in a coffin?" he asked not looking away from the headrest.
Duo slowly walked up behind the small boy, placing his pale hands over the other's warm fingers. "No..." he said into the boy's ear softly, "Bed's are much more comfortable...Don't you think?" he asked.
Heero's breath hitched as he nodded softly, but scooted away from the other unconsciously. Duo smirked, walking away swiftly, "Where would you like to sleep?"
Blinking suddenly, Heero noticed a storm had blown over the house and thunder was currently shaking the grounds. Lightning cracked and popped outside the large windows of the bedroom as Heero bit his lip, silently mulling over whether he should still be wary of this vampire and sleep somewhere else.
Noticing the internal conflict, Duo made the decision for him, "I'll sleep on the couch."
Heero, feeling guilty about taking another's bed offered to take the couch, but the vampire would not hear of it, and swiftly began removing his clothes. Blushing lightly as he caught himself admiring the pale skin, Heero quickly turned, rushing into the adjoining bathroom.
"Uh-" Duo blinked noticing the boy's hastiness, and smiled at his innocence. Shaking his head, the braided vampire quickly laid down only to be left with no desire for sleep. Hearing the soft click of the bathroom door, minutes later, violet eyes turned to look toward the door, as the boy emerged with a large black shirt, that hung off one shoulder. His hair was damp, a little more tousled then usual, and he had a towel in his arms.
Feigning sleep, so that his companion would feel less threatened, Duo's eyes were mere slits, watching the every move of the Japanese boy.
Heero turned to find the vampire deep in sleep, while he had bathed, only now did he let a small amount of relief in, and he brought the towel to his head. With a sigh he threw himself onto the plush bed, being careful not to wake his companion. Holding back a groan, he snuggled in and let thoughts about his friends come to him.
Hours later, thunder boomed as lightening cracked and shattered through the dark skies. A loud clap of thunder jolted the boy on the bed into wakefulness. "Don't be afraid. It's only a thunderstorm." he heard the other occupant of the room say from his spot on the couch.
"Who said I was afraid?" Heero snapped.
Blinking at his own curtness, the Japanese quickly rolled over, only to hunch in on himself as more thunder echoed in the room. Feeling a light tap on his shoulder, he turned around to glare into amused violet orbs, "What?" he said in a clipped tone. He saw those beautiful gems roll and felt the bed dip slightly as the other gently climbed into the large bed and hugged him from behind slowly.
The hug was protective, not feeling sexual in the least, so Heero simply sighed. He could feel the muscles in his back tense up at the unwelcome closeness, but at the same time felt another unwelcome feeling, which wouldn't allow him to scoot away.
Time passed, and in the darkness of the room Duo frowned as he noticed dozens of shadows flickering across his windows, their bright red eyes gleamed as they watched the two on the bed.
His red lips curled in anger, as he disappeared from the boy nestled in his arms. Seeing the braided vampire holding the mortal one-minute, and not seeing him the next unnerved the shadows, which retreated slightly from the windows.
Lightning flashed suddenly revealing the beautiful ancient, "What are you doing here?” he asked, slashing and destroying the shadow demons one by one, "...sent to spy on me?" he hissed.
Water dripped down the vampire's face and hair as he glared angrily at the only shadow left who was flattened against the stone wall of the mansion, quivering in fear, Duo smiled cruelly, "Tell Treize, and his whore of a daughter, Mariemeia, that the game is over.”
Nodding slightly the demon shakily responded, "Y-yes, Lord Shinigami."
Making a disgusted face at the lowly shadow demon the braided ancient barked, "Go now!" Eyes widening slightly at the outburst the demon quickly clambered into the night. Duo turned his face to watch the frightened shadow run to his masters.
He vanished suddenly only to reappear completely dry in his bedroom, and stand over the boy in the bed. Noticing the other's shivering, he gently brushed heavy bangs away from the sleeping face in an attempt to calm him. Once the other had relaxed and seemed to be sleeping fitfully, Duo once again remained on the couch, keeping his eyes open the rest of the night.
Breathing in deeply, dark lashes fluttered as sleepy blue eyes opened. Heero gasped sitting up quickly, the satin sheets pooling around him. His head whipped to the couch without a thought and he saw the slim vampire still lying there, his deep violets trained on him.
"Morning," the vampire called quietly from his position on the couch.
"Ohayo..." Heero nearly whispered, then cleared his throat softly, "When are you taking me back?" he asked in a sharper voice.
Letting the smile drop slightly Duo answered in a level tone, "I'm glad you asked. There was a check on your position last night so I don't think you'll be going home anytime soon."
Dark brows shot down in confusion and anger at delaying his return, "What?"
Pursing his lips together in thought Duo explained, "Lackey demons were outside our window last night... watching you," Heero felt his heart skip at the thought, "but they didn't get far.”
Nodding in understanding, the shorthaired boy swung his legs over the side of the bed, and let them dangle for a moment, his toes wiggling, "Who sent them here?" he asked.
Auburn brows knitted together tightly, and violet eyes darkened in anger, "Vampyr. They know you're here…"
Looking down to the carpeted floor Heero mumbled something over his full lips, catching the attention of the taller vampire. He didn't know what possessed him to say this, but he couldn't stop the words. Violet eyes widened at what he heard, momentarily and then softened as he sat up and padded silently over to his bed.
Placing a finger under the other's chin, Duo raised the shy boy's head up to look into his eyes, "I will protect you." he said firmly and wrapped the thin boy into his arms, even as he felt the other struggle at first in his grip.
With resolve in his eyes, the vampire released the boy gently and held him at arms length, "Let's go down stairs, eat breakfast, and then we can talk." Heero nodded in agreement, but violet eyes didn't miss the definite stiffening in the other's posture at the word `eat'.
As the two descended the stairs, Duo noticed an almost imperceptive, shadow out the corner of his eye and immediately became defensive. Hissing the braided vampire pounced on the shadow, only to hear a loud yelp. Blinking at the voice the vampire grinned sheepishly at the fuming blonde beneath him.
"Sorry,” he said without much remorse, before winking and quickly pulling the Arabian up with him. Unprepared for the force, the smaller fledgling collided softly with the taller vampire and glared up into amused violet eyes.
"What's got you so worked up this morning?" he asked clearing his throat and backing away from the older vampire.
"It's nothing. Just saw demons around the house last night." Duo turned, his eyes clashing with serious aquamarine.
Thin blonde brows shot up, "shadow demons?” he asked, already knowing the answer. “You know there could only be one person who controls those."
Nodding in agreement, Duo turned back to Heero, to see him looking at his blonde friend curiously. "Heero, this is Quatre, the fledgling lover of my ancient brother, Trowa."
The blonde's eyes took on a distinct glint as he eyed the small boy before him up and down, "Mmm..." he said licking his lips, "Sure you won't change your mind about sharing, Duo?" he asked hopefully, knowing fully who the other was.
"No," the braided boy snickered.
Quatre sighed and shrugged his shoulders, "Can't blame me for trying." Duo smirked and walked over to stand protectively near Heero.
Shifting away from the braided one next to him Heero greeted the blonde, "Ohayo." He glanced the other over, not feeling all too comfortable yet around the vampire, fledgling or not.
Beaming a toothy white smile to the smaller boy Quatre extended a hand, "Morning! And nice to meet you, finally."
Blue eyes quickly scanned the milk white hand and hesitantly extended his own to the other boy's, shaking it reluctantly, "Aa." was all he said.
Sensing the discomfort of the shorthaired boy Duo broke in, "Where's Trowa?"
Blinking and looking away from the alluring boy in front of him Quatre shrugged his slim shoulders saying, "I dunno, he said he thought he heard something..." Nodding in understanding Duo nodded to Heero and led him through the elaborate hallways.
Heero looked at the surroundings warily, large arching doorways lead to each new room. Angels were carved into the ceiling of every room, and giant chandeliers dangled from them as well.
Violet-eyes watched the boy behind them carefully, as Duo walked he thought back to the occurrences of last night. 'They are going to come for him again.' he thought angrily. ' Trowa must have felt it too.'
He sighed aloud as thoughts of what Heero had mumbled this morning suddenly came to him, and smiled at what the boy had managed to mumble through his pink lips, 'I don't know why…but…I will stay here...with you."
