Saturday's Troubles
Wufei sat in the front room of the home he shared with his two lovers, reading a book, and every so often looking out at the game of catch being played out on the lawn. The two on the lawn wouldn't admit it, but they were anxiously awaiting the arrival of the kids.
A smile spread across Wufei's severe features at the thought of his honorary niece and nephew, he was crazy about them, and valued the two weekends a month he was able to spend with them. Marion was Heero's princess, the man spoiled her senseless, and to Wufei she was a perfect mix of her parents. Odin on the other hand had both of his parent's stubbornness, his maternal uncle's looks, and had picked up mannerisms from all of the pilots, even Noin's habit of picking at her cuticles, much to Relena's despair.
A flash of pink distracted Wufei from his musings. The kids were here. He put down his forgotten book and headed for the door. He didn't want to miss the ritual welcoming.
Walking down the front steps Wufei's grin widened at the sight of Heero tossing his son into the air, and then the grin disappeared when he saw Marion shrug off Duo's hug. What would make her do that? He usually saw her giggling upon receiving one of Duo's 'fish kisses'. He looked towards the receding pink limo, knowing that behind those tinted windows was a woman with a grudge, and little morals when it came to fighting without 'violence'. Relena could play mind games with the best of them, and since they left no physical wounds, her pacifist beliefs were not compromised.
He noticed Duo trying to catch his eye, and flashed a quick smile at his braided lover before striding over to stand with his family.
"Hey kids, Uncle Trowa and Uncle Quatre invited us over to their house for the afternoon. I don't suppose you would be interested in going for a swim?"
Wufei stumbled back a bit when Odin wrapped his arms around Wufei's waist in a hug.
"Yes! Please can we go? Doofus will be there, won't he?"
Ruffling the boy's shoulder length hair, Wufei allowed himself to smile again.
"Yes the mutt will be there, and I believe you cousin will be there as well."
He turned his glaze to Heero who was holding Marion in his arms.
"Although it is highly doubtful that Shin will be pleased to hear that he is less missed then an oversized drooling, dog."
Wufei felt a surge of love go though him because of the grin Heero shot him, being around his children always brought out the best in the man.
"Ahh, but Odin knows that Doofus is less likely to push him into the pool like last time, right blondie."
Lithe arms wrapped around Wufei's waist, and Duo laid his chin on the Chinese man's shoulder. Wufei relaxed back into his love's arms. It was almost perfect standing out here all together like this, if it wasn't for Marion's small smile of disapproval.
True to Wufei's word, as well as Trowa, Quatre, and their ugly dog, Sally, Noin, and their son, Shin, were also at the Arabian's home. The ten enjoyed a relaxed lunch, and Marion seemed to relax around the others, acting more like her usual self.
After lunch Wufei sat with Quatre at the edge of the pool watching the children, both in age and at heart, play.
"So Wufei, what's on your mind?"
Wufei glanced over at his friend, expecting, and seeing only idle curiosity. So he responded honestly.
"It's Marion, she hasn't said a word to Duo or I since she has arrived, and every time one of us goes to touch her she avoids us. I'm worried."
Quatre took a sip of his tea before answering.
"Do you think Relena has anything to do with it? You told me yesterday that she hasn't been taking the divorce proceedings very well."
Wufei nodded. It was true, in the many meetings with Relena's lawyers, it had been clear that the Prime Minister was loathe to let her husband go.
"Perhaps, but Odin seems the normal. I guess I'll ask him if her knows anything about Marion's strange behaviour."
Quatre nodded and went back to his drink, and watching the children play. Wufei got up from his seat and wandered over to where Sally was sitting, he wanted to ask the woman a question.
"Wonderful weather we're having isn't it."
Wufei felt a grim sort of satisfaction when Sally jumped slightly in surprise. She flushed slightly, knowing that the dark haired man had gotten one up on her.
"Perfectly lovely, Chang. What do you want?"
He sat down next to her and asked the questions he needed to.
Later that afternoon, when all the members of the Maxwell-Chang-Yuy household were suitably worn out and damp, they waved goodbye to their friends, and headed back to their home.
Heero drove, like always, and asked his children about their week, while Duo wrung his sodden braid out on Wufei, who smiled and wiped his wet sleeve on the back of Heero's neck.
All three men smiled when both Odin and Marion giggled at their antics, no one else seemed to appreciate the unique blend of humour that was a large part of their relationship.
By the time they arrived home Duo was tickling Odin, who was giggling helplessly, and Marion was busy trying Wufei's hair into little knotted braids, smiling in a relaxed, honest sort of way.
Heero managed to park without anyone being injured, and dragged them all inside.
Once the door opened Wufei managed to regain his composure.
"Dinner needs to be made, and those who insisted on swimming have to have showers before dinner. You know what chlorine does to the skin. Marion gets first shower, and Odin second. Duo you can have third, after you get that hair brushed out."
He stood there, arms crossed waiting for his family to do as they were told. Marion did, racing up the stairs towards the bathroom; Odin close on her heels, shouting something about if he got to the shower first Uncle Wufei's instructions didn't count.
Duo just stood there, not looking impressed.
"But I don't wanna go. Or brush my hair; it gets all tangley after swimming."
Heero smirked at his American lover.
"And what happens if you let it dry?"
Duo pouted. "It's worse, but can't you guys help me?"
Wufei looked thoughtful for a moment before shaking his head.
"I can't I have to get dinner started."
Heero just smiled, and grabbed Wufei's arm before dragging him up to their bedroom, where Duo's hairbrush was located.
Dinner was a comparatively sombre affair. Marion had gone back to her previous state of not talking to Duo or Wufei, and it was putting a damper on the rest of the family.
"Marion would you pass the salt?"
Wufei watched pain enter Duo's violet eyes, as she didn't move, not even when Odin reached past her to pass the salt to Duo.
Heero looked, if it was possible, even more upset them either Duo, or Wufei, who were the ones being shunned.
"Marion, did Uncle Duo deserve that rudeness?"
The chocolate haired girl looked up at her father, "but Daddy, Uncle Duo is good for nothing, and God knew he was good for nothing from the start. If God had loved him, he wouldn't have had the life he had."
Shocked silence fell over the table, before Duo's fork clattered to his plate and the braided man ran from the room.
Odin pushed away from the table, but he was livid rather then upset.
"Marion, how can you say such a thing! Uncle Duo has never been anything but nice to us, and he loves us, and we love him, and if there is a god, he most certainly loves Uncle Duo because Uncle Duo is wonderful."
The blonde child then left the room presumably to console is distraught uncle.
Wufei rose to leave as well, unable to deal with the situation, but Heero's hand on his wrist stopped him. So he sat back down, and faced his niece.
"Marion, what made you say such a thing?"
Wufei recognised the soft, dangerous tome of Heero's voice, usually only heard when the Japanese man was about to attack.
The little girl looked confused as to why everyone would be so upset at her words.
"Mother told us it, she said it was true."
"And did your mother say anything about Uncle Wufei?"
Marion was starting to look seriously worried at this point.
"Yes, that Uncle Wufei is a bad man, he doesn't know how to properly take care of family. If he was a good man he wouldn't have lost his family, but he takes good care of us, I don't understand."
The last word was choked out; the six year old was holding back tears.
Wufei sat back in his chair shocked and hurt. He had thought that Marion would know better then to believe those things about her 'uncles' and that Relena was still enough of their friend not to brainwash her child in such a way.
He looked over at Heero, who was gathering his daughter into his arms.
"Mari you know better then to believe those things, they aren't true, and you know it. You hurt Uncle Duo, and Uncle Wufei very much, you're going to have to apologize."
The anger hadn't receded from Heero's eyes, but it now had a direction, his ex-wife.
Marion looked over at Wufei, a few tears running down her red cheeks.
"I'm sorry Uncle Wufei. I'm sorry I called you a bad man, and I'm sorry that I hurt Uncle Duo, and I'm sorry that I ruined dinner, and I'm-"
Wufei, temporary paralysis lifted, got out of his seat and cut off the child's words with a hug.
"It's okay Marion, go find Uncle Duo and talk to him. He'll be happy to hear it."
He let her go, and Heero lifted her back out of his arms and placed her on the floor.
"Go on now, don't keep him waiting."
Once she had left the room, Heero jumped out of his chair and stalked towards the vid-phone, with murder clear in his eyes.
Wufei rose to stop him. "Heero, wait. We'll call her in the morning once our tempers have cooled. Right now you would only say something rash, and end up hurting more people. We don't need that."
Heero paused, finger centimetres away from the keypad. Wufei quickly walked over to where his irate lover was standing and wrapped tan arms around him.
"Marion apologized, Duo is talking to her right now, and Odin is with them, the entire story will come out, and when we have all the facts, then, we can decide on a plan of action. I don't want to lose them."
Heero turned in Wufei's arms, holing the other close.
"I know, but turning my children against my lovers. Isn't that going to far? How could she?" Anger still tainted his voice and posture. Wufei knew he had to placate the man somehow.
"Six months ago she lost her husband to his two best friends, who were also close friends of her own. She's going to be bitter. We knew it was inevitable that you would leave her eventually, but it was beyond both Duo's and my wildest dreams that you would leave her because you loved us more. We love you, but we can't be blind to the fact that Relena is well… Relena, and there is nothing that can change that fact."
He laid a chaste kiss upon Heero's lips.
"Let's go clean up, and then put those kids to bed. It's been a long day."
He looked into his lover's eyes, and saw a measure of calmness enter them. Duo was much better at diffusing Heero's temper, but the children were currently consoling the braided man, so it was up to Wufei to deal with Heero.
"Hn."
Heero's soft sound of consent brought a smile to Wufei's face, and he lead the other man into the kitchen to clean up supper.
That night, crawling into the bed he shared with his two loves Wufei clung closer then he usually did. The three of them did not exactly have domestic bliss, but they were pretty close, and any emotional upheavals struck each of them hard.
He was just about to drift off to sleep when Duo spoke into the darkness.
"I really love those kids. Why can't we keep them? Relena doesn't have the time for them, and she's too angry at the world, and we could do it-"
Wufei cut off the stream of words with a kiss. It was too late to be talking of such things, and the idea had been on his mind as well. He released Duo's lips and pecked Heero quickly on the forehead before lying back down. They could deal with everything in the morning.
TBC….
