Deceptively slender hands gripped the edge of the silver crib, as the young boy stood on the tips of his toes to peer in curiously, his violet eyes blinking largely. Snow-white linens, lined in silver and dark blue were wrapped around the newborn baby boy, who was fast asleep. The youth, just shy of nine years old, barely understood what the birth of this prince would mean for his life. “Cuter then a button, isn't he, honey?” His wide amethysts turned to look up into pools of a similar shade, his mother smiled sweetly at him, “You'll have to take great care when you watch him.”

The young boy nodded exuberantly, his braid bouncing, “Yes, mother. He is cute…” he trailed off smiling down on the unknowing heir to the Valerian throne. His careful eyes trailed over the sleeping form, as he listened with half ear to the conversation between his own parents and the rulers of this nation.

An airy laugh lifted from his father's throat and the older king smiled at his newly allied supporter. The king of Valerian was young, wide-eyed to his new power, and now that he had a son to protect he'd grown eager to form peace treaties with foreign nations. The mature king of Osiris had seen the opportunity as ripe, and knew taking this kingdom now would be easier then candy from a child. “Well I believe my prince needs to learn by experience. In time our sons will learn to love each other as brothers and our united kingdoms will be a formidable force. Don't you agree, my queen?”

The Osirian king turned to his wife, his face pleasant, as he looked her over, appreciatively. The pale queen was beautiful, taller then most women, she was slender and graceful-looking with thick silver hair around her waist and stark white skin, her lashes were thick and rimmed vibrant violet eyes. She smiled back at him as she stepped forward to take his arm, her long lips stretching across her milky countenance, “Yes, we are truly grateful for this rare opportunity which you have graciously blessed us with. We're sure our son will be very happy, and helpful to the both of you.”

The royal couple were a pair of smooth talkers, the tall strapping king and his slender wife had mastered the art of speech, and manipulation along with it. Osiris' king grinned at the slightly shorter king opposite him, the man was an honest fool, blindly allowing a newly allied nation into his own and even setting up a contract to keep the two families closely tied. He, being already in his early thirties had ruled quite a while longer then the other, he was tall, almost reaching six and a half feet, his shoulders were broad and he was well built. He had light honey eyes, which easily fooled with their bright and cheerful disposition, and matching honey streaked hair, he was a handsome king, with a wooing smile, barely freckled cheeks, and light stubble on a heart-shaped face.

“We should be the ones who are grateful,” the other queen smiled up at the couple, it was obvious she was from far east, and her exotic features contrasted perfectly with her husband's. She was small, her frame delicate and slim, her face was oval with high, pronounced cheekbones, she had a warm olive skin tone which made her slanted hazel eyes shine intensely and her thick lashes gave the appearance of cosmetics. She had full lips, which pulled back easily to reveal perfect rows of white teeth and a small nose that made her look youthful. Long, straight hair flowed down her back in ebony, and completed her innocent appearance. “You've given us a young prince to help advise and guide our son like a brother.”

Her king beside her squeezed her hand and nodded, “Yes, Prince Maximus should prove to be a valuable asset indeed.” The Valerian king was a full head taller then his own wife, but still not reaching the height of the king of Osiris. He was slender like his wife, but his frame was lined with lean muscle that gave him a sense of agility. He was clean-shaven with dewy cheeks and bright blue eyes like the midnight sky, chocolate brown locks fell into his eyes messily, and full lips were genuine when they smiled. He had a charming look and was most handsome with his boyish features.

The Rulers of Osiris grinned back at the sadly mistaken couple before them and nodded, the queen turning to grab her tall son by the hand. She tugged at him, although his other hand clung to the edge of the crib tightly, his eyes glued on the sleeping baby's face, “Let go, my son,” she whispered quietly, but with a clear order behind it. The boy's fingers reluctantly lifted one-by-one and the he walked forward with his mother, craning his neck to look back at the silver bed. Once they'd stopped again, the tall woman brought her son around to stand before her, “We leave him with you, then,” she said, baring her teeth in what she could muster as a smile.

The Valerian queen looked at the other woman across from her peculiarly before smiling down on the young boy warmly and stooping in front of his face, “Hello, My Prince,” she said and extended a jeweled hand. He placed his pale hand within hers trustingly and smiled, he liked this woman, she was warm and genuine, reminding him of his own mother. They'd met before and his parents had explained all that he would be doing while in this kingdom, he had a job to do and wasn't here merely for a friendship. “Would you like to go read the new prince a story with me?” she asked, his hand securely held in hers.

The short braid between his shoulders bounced when he nodded, “Yes, my lady,” he said enthusiastically. She nodded to him, and stood, leading him over to the crib where she pulled up a chair and sat down to read, allowing the braided boy to once again peer into the crib. The Valerian king smiled at his family, and turned to look at the king across from him, he almost frowned when he saw the wolfish grin on the other man's face as he watched his own son, looking into the silver bed. The elegant woman beside him was merely placid in her expression and turned her vibrant eyes back to his when she felt them on her.

“We've explained to our prince he'll be spending the night here often and that he must protect and teach the new heir.” When she finished she smiled, but it wasn't mirthful, the blue-eyed king noticed and nodded to her gratefully. His eyes continued to watch the couple and didn't miss when the slender queen attempted to discreetly elbow her husband. The taller king immediately turned, a flash of his eye letting her know he understood.

He looked over to the shorter king smiling heartily, “We'll be back for him in twelve moons.” The brunette king nodded, and shook the other's hand, bidding him goodbye while the queen ran over to her son hugging the braided prince tenderly and kissing his head. His violet eyes bore into hers as he realized she'd be leaving and he grinned, hiding his fear. She only covered his face in kisses when she took in the farce, and smiled lovingly. The Valerian king watched the affections, amazed at how cold she was unless she was with her young heir. He noticed her whisper in his ear and his eyes were warm and shining until she said something that upset him, because his lips drew down into a serious pose.

He watched as she assured him of her love for him and petted his hair before his father stepped forward to ruffle it, his large hand almost covering the boy's face. He grinned down on him, patting his back, “Make me proud, son,” he said before turning to leave. The queen's gaze stayed fastened to him for a moment longer before she kissed his forehead and turned away walking briskly to catch up with her husband.

Three servants accompanied them out, two large men and a small maid, as they got in their carriage and disappeared back to their homeland. The king Landon turned to his wife after the doors had closed, he smiled when he still saw the woman reading and the boy watching after his son, diligently.

Five years later…

Large blue eyes blinked, and the small body jumped with excitement, “Mama! Where's Duo?” Queen Aoki smiled down on her son sweetly, and petted his silky bed of chocolate hair, admiring him. He'd grown in the last few years, his young features soft and innocent, every lady of the court adored and desired him for themselves. The growing prince was sheltered, his only friends being his parents, his servants, and of course Duo. The older prince of the adjacent nation was now almost fourteen and had grown, his young face already promising to give way to beautiful features. Her son was completely crazy for him.

“I know you miss him, but he'll be arriving tonight to take care of you for the next few weeks,” The braided prince had not visited her son in almost four months and his elongated absence had worried and bothered the little brunette. She smiled, and lifted him into her arms, he'd always been small and light, inheriting her frame, “Would you like to go see the fountains with me until the gala tonight?” She nuzzled his nose, giggling when he bounced in her hold excitedly at the suggestion.

Trumpets blared, and banners whipped through the air as the large doors to the grandiose hall flew open allowing a multitude of servants and guards in, followed by a finely garbed youth with a small crown atop his head. The guests, who all stood at attention, immediately began clapping when the handsome young prince came into view. Some of the younger ladies swooned as he descended the marble staircase and bowed before the royal couple of Valerian, kissing the queen's hand, and shaking the king's. When the violet-eyed prince rose, the queen smiled at him warmly and embraced him before telling him where he could find the prince. The Osirian nodded, and turned to wave to the ballroom full of people before swiftly leaving the hall, with his trail of servants behind him.

A strong hand knocked hard on the thick wooden door, before being allowed in. Even before the tall youth had managed to fully step into the royal bedroom he had struggled to keep from being knocked over by the small body that now hung from his long leg. “Duo!” the small voice enthused, “I missed you.” The braided boy could not restrain the smile that warmed his features at the child's affections as he walked sturdily into the room, the child securely fastened around his muscled thigh.

Sitting down on the large bed, he pulled the boy from his leg and sat him on his lap, “How are you Heero?” The younger smiled broadly, hugging the other tightly as the violet-eyed heir bid all the servants their leave. He waited patiently for the little boy's response, smiling down on who he thought of as a younger brother.

“I been good,” the bright blue eyes gleamed up at him proudly, searching for approval, “I missed you Duo, why didn't you come see me?” Violet eyes hardened for an instant before returning to normal, the many months he'd spent training in his kingdom flooding his thoughts. He'd been pushed hard to learn assassination, military, covert, and manipulation tactics, all for the sole use of the oblivious child who grinned up at him from his lap, now. “I was learning new things so I could teach you better,” he replied, a grin firmly set in place.

“Would you like to go outside the palace with me for the night?” He could see the inner conflict behind the child's eyes, and pushed a little more for his desired answer. “You trust me, don't you?” That did it, the child nodded, and agreed to leave the palace for the night despite his parent's orders and the rule of the palace. Duo grinned in satisfaction and hefted the small boy up, stealthily escaping the eyes of the palace guards.

Seven years later…

Pink lips parted to nibble along the edge of the wooden pencil, and heavy lids drooped slightly as the slender youth sat opposite his part-time tutor in boredom. Messy coffee-colored locks covered the half-lidded eyes and the fact that the young prince was quickly falling asleep. He hated these lessons when Duo was gone, his real mentor, the older prince was everything he wanted to be and he admired him above all others. This aged carrion was only two steps away from the grave, and the prince was beyond exasperated that his parents found the man fit to tutor him while the Osirian Prince was away.

Swaying slightly as he felt the verge of consciousness slip away, he shut his eyes and leaned his head against the desk with a quiet thud. What seemed like only a blink later, he felt a gentle hand on his shoulder and a slight shake before groaning and leaning his face off of the desk. Irritated eyes and a disgruntled stance stood over him as he looked up at his tutor, the senior glared heatedly, while tapping his foot against the floor incessantly. “Are your studies that boring when I'm gone?” Cobalt eyes blinked curiously and shifted to the unnoticed hand, which still gripped his shoulder, they trailed up the sleeved arm and into mirthful violets.

“Duo!” the young boy's face visibly brightened, and he jumped up from his chair, sending it back with a grinding screech against the floor. He grabbed the surprised young man around the waist, “I'm so glad you're back!” he cheered, and smiled up from the hard chest.

Deep amethysts glowed, and the now eager nineteen-year-old grinned down on the pre-teen. He checked the boy over since the last time he'd seen him, his same small frame made the young prince look skinny and almost scrawny. His dark hair was messy and unkempt, but had an endearing quality, and his heavily lashed eyes were deep, and wild, far too big for his small angular face. The full mouth was wide with a welcoming smile, and his caramel skin was flawless, overall the boy was youthful and fragile looking.

He, on the other hand, had grown and matured, his training adding bulk to his tall figure. He had a beautifully built body; his broad shoulders and chiseled muscles alone were enough to drive any Greek god envious. He had long strong legs, like a racehorse, and a taught tall body, which wooed every woman and most men he passed. Then there was his face, his mothers looks and his father's strength were what people always told him, he had a tanned, heart-shaped face, with tiny freckles barely visible over the rosy apples, and wide amethyst eyes. He was always smiling, his mothers wide mouth, passed down to him. Duo was strong, and far smarter then most young men his age, he'd been training for years and was surely ready for the day when he could complete his mission.

Wide eyes darkened as they flashed over, watching the shorter, excited youth. How he longed for this to be over though, for his father's dream since he was only a boy to be realized. “You've grown taller, my prince,” he said grinning when the other looked even happier at the compliment, “Would you like to go for a hunt?”

Blue eyes widened in amazement, “Do you really think I could?” he asked. His body language conveyed excitement, but now showed restraint and almost hesitation at the suggestion. Inwardly the older prince smirked, he knew exactly how to put the other at ease, and ensure that he went along with his will.

“You trust me, don't you?” he asked, widening his eyes slightly in false hopefulness. As he'd foreseen, the other relented and nodded immediately, saying that he undoubtedly trusted the other with his life. As they left the palace, the tall prince looked over to the brunette beside him on horseback. `Only a few more years…' he thought as they rode off and away from the protective gates.

However, from atop a high painted window, a worried mother watched as her son blindly followed the prince away from the castle. Queen Aoki had carefully watched over her son for all these years and loved that he had an older brother figure like Duo, but also feared the complications of such a relationship. The Osirian prince was getting older, and soon he would take over his kingdom, new kings were often reckless and power-hungry and she feared her son's weakness for him would prove malignant.

The braided heir had earlier stopped by their royal chambers, the news he brought made her heart pang in sadness for her son. This was going to be Duo's last visit for five years, the longest time her son had gone without seeing the other prince. She knew it would be difficult for her son, he would essentially be losing the only friend he had, and his lack of communication with others close to his age might just close him into a reclusive shell. The dark haired woman sighed, her slanted eyes closing as she turned away from the window and walked back to her bedchamber awaiting her son's return.

Five years later…

A small figure sat alone, on a large bed, his back flat against its hard, wooden headboard, his face downcast. Gossamer curtains billowed silently as a fragrant breeze drifted about the room, blowing the youth's thick dark bangs out of his half-lidded eyes. Deep eyes, the color of the night sky outside his window stared down at the object held tightly in the small hands. The slender teen slid down beneath his sheets and placed the letter neatly under his pillow, a gentle smile gracing his features as he curled into himself for warmth. Wide cobalt eyes, closed and full lips parted as he sighed, whispering to himself, “Tomorrow…”
