Gundam Wing Fan Fiction ❯ To Sleep with a Traitor ❯ Chapter 3

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

Pursing his lips together to stifle another yawn, Heero watched the twirling bodies detachedly. He'd been sitting on for the past three hours, Quatre dutifully at his side, while his mother and father chatted idly to his right. How much longer was he going to have to wait? He frowned as his back began to protest his rigid position and he turned to the blonde beside him to distract himself.

“This Prince better be worth it for making us wait so damn long. I mean I understand being fashionably late but this is just rude!” Heero had to keep himself from smirking at the blonde's comment, it seemed he wasn't the only one growing impatient.

“Hn. Perhaps there was a problem with one of the carriages?” the brunette offered, trying to give his long-time friend the benefit of the doubt.

The Arabian merely raised an eyebrow at him before glancing around the room again. “See anything you like?” he asked, as he grimaced at a few of the girls.

Heero didn't respond, his frown only deepening as he also surveyed the many guests littering the endless dance floor. He didn't want to think about his upcoming deadline. “I'll take that as a `no',” Quatre continued.

Blue eyes moved with the intention of stopping on aqua, but instead paused when they noticed a heavily decorated servant step forward with a trumpet. Unconsciously, Heero's heart began to beat faster and he found himself leaning forward to hear what the servant would report.

Heero watched carefully as the man brought a large bronze horn to his lips, the sound from his instrument halting all movement in the large hall. “Announcing, his Royal Highness, the Crowned Prince of Osirian, Prince Duo Maximus!”

At this introduction the crowd of guests began to clap and watch in awe as the large doors to the ballroom slid open to allow a slew of dancers and acrobats to tumble in. The dark haired dancers slid languidly down the steps and onto the floor, spinning scarlet scarves around themselves while other figures, clad in tight outfits, flipped and tumbled around them.

Despite the obvious delight the guests were having, the blue-eyed prince merely sat in annoyance, eager to see the one behind the sea of newcomers. Finally the entourage subsided and four servant girls stepped forward and bowed to him and his parents. Once they moved aside Heero saw him. The tall, lean figure stood just inside the entrance, his hands on his hips, his chest out and a cocky grin across his heart-shaped face.

Heero's breath caught in his throat as his eyes trailed up the strong the chest to land on bright indigo gems that glittered directly at him. He'd waited years to see those eyes, that complex shade of indigo, unique to the foreign prince's eyes.

In an instant those eyes were gone however, and as the young man made his descent down the staircase, what seemed like the entire dance floor suddenly swarmed around him. Heero watched as the dancers and acrobats doubled as bodygaurds, their muscular frames leaping with ease to block off all advances from the all-too-eager guests.

“Well I'm not disappointed,” Quatre mumbled, a look of genuine interest across his features as he assessed the awaited guest. He smiled slyly, glancing at Heero from the corner of his eye, “And I can see you aren't either, my prince.”

The comment earned him an immediate glare, to which he merely smiled innocently. The two boys waited while the braided man gradually moved closer to them, “Did he bring enough people with him?” Quatre asked, snickering softly at the extensive entourage.

The blue-eyed prince opted to remain silent when finally Duo stood before him and his parents, his bodygaurds billowing out to push everyone else away. Before anyone else, King Landon was on his feet, his arms outstretched, “Duo, welcome!” he enthused while his wife chose to remain seated, her face pleasant, but her eyes calculating.

Heero watched the taller youth bow respectfully before embracing his father tightly. He also noticed how when the prince stepped forward to bow to his mother, her eyes were quick soften, and she extended her hand smoothly for him to kiss, before standing and hugging him gently.

Finally those bright amethysts were trained on him once more, and he fought to keep both a blush and a frown at said blush at bay. However, instead of the once warm and inviting smile from the older boy's lips there was something different. He towered over him now, with a leering grin, before leaning in to ask mockingly, “Have the years turned you cold towards your old mentor? Or are you too old for hugs now?”

The younger prince could not contain the frown when he heard the unhindered jibe towards his age. Why was Duo treating him like a child? He was quickly finding he didn't like this new cocky and extravagant prince one bit. Evening out his frown, he schooled his features into a nonchalant stare. “I can't be too old for hugs if you're still young enough for these kinds of harlequin theatrics,” he responded, nodding his head towards the scantily clad dancers that now writhed on the dance floor among the guests

That did it. The mask cracked a tiny bit, and the over-confident young man raised an eyebrow in questioning. Heero fought down a smirk when he heard Quatre snicker beside him; the other boy had obviously been as impressed as he had by the older prince's dancers.

“Well I see the years have sharpened your tongue,” Duo replied, his grin once again secured before he extended his hand, “But have they sharpened your dancing skills?”

Shocked, Heero could merely stare at the offered hand before he realized it was already taking hold of his own and pulling him onto the floor. Barely getting in a protest, he tugged at his arm, wincing when he felt his hands crack under the other man's hold. Taking a deep breath, he tried to pull back all his memories; this was Duo, his best friend. They had just gotten off on the wrong foot; he should let it slide…

Heero was mid-thought when he was suddenly dipped, his head tossing back in surprise and his grip tightening on his partner out of instinct. Struggling not to yelp, he steadied himself as the other jerked forcefully to stand, and they continued to weave in and out of the other guests.

Biting his tongue, Heero settled on a neutral face as he spun gracefully with the taller youth. The other was silent as they danced among the other overly dressed guests, his cheeky smile forced and his flirtatious glances nonselective. The blue-eyed boy couldn't help but feel disappointed that the politicians and scholars at his friend's finishing school had changed him so much, and he didn't notice when he sighed audibly.

“It's been a long time, hasn't Hee-chan?” the voice was low, tender like it had been all those years ago.

Midnight gems darted up instantly and Heero felt slightly relieved when the other boy's face and eyes held some of the old honesty they used to. He felt some of the excitement from when he was younger build up in him, and he smiled a small smile, nodding.

“You're not as talkative as you were when you were younger,” the other mused, a playful grin on his face, but one that Heero decided was real.

He turned his face away from the other, continuing in their waltz for a moment before he replied, “You're not as funny as you were.”

This made the taller blink in surprise before he laughed, his laughter clear and loud, causing some of the people near them to turn in curiosity. “I guess not,” he responded. Gradually the song melted away into another and before Heero knew it a horde of girls had surrounded the both of them.

“Prince Duo! Oh you're so handsome!”

“Please! Dance with me Prince Heero!”

“No! Dance with me your majesty!”

“Prince Duo!”

“Prince Heero!”

Less than interested in dancing with any of the shameless girls, Heero slowly pulled his hand out of Duo's hold. He began to ease away from the other, watching while Duo flirted with the flock. He had almost gotten out of reach when suddenly the taller prince's arm darted out to grab him, pulling him snugly against his chest. “My apologies, ladies. But I already have a partner,” the braided man said, his charm completely disarming the statement.

The women pouted, but still hovered as another song started in case either prince changed his mind. Frowning up at Duo in confusion, Heero remained silent, wondering why the other prince had refused the generous offers.

“Don't look that way Heero. You know you're the only one for me,” was all the other said, adding a wink for emphasis.

Heero blushed, struggling to change the subject, “My eighteenth birthday is coming…” he said, clearing his throat.

“And you are in need of a bride to rule with, no?” came the knowing reply, but the violet eyes were focused elsewhere.

Heero only nodded, and watched the stony face carefully before it melted away into another smile, a false one, “Or a groom, perhaps?”

Blue eyes widened before Heero shook his head, “My father won't have it.”

The taller only hummed before continuing, “Come to town with me tomorrow,” he said.

Dark brows knitted at the subject change, before Duo shrugged, “It's been so long. I wanted you to show me around.” When the shorter hesitated, he added, “C'mon, it'll give us a chance to find you bride.”

With narrowed eyes, Heero slowly relented with a nod, and backed away as the song ended, bowing to the other prince. “Until tomorrow your Majesty,” he said, before turning and walking back to his seat beside Quatre.

Violet eyes were wide in disbelief as the braided man stood, bewildered and deserted on the dance floor. It only took a moment, however, for the ladies of the court to notice the handsome prince was now solo and they quickly honed in on the Osirian.

“You seemed to be enjoying yourself,” Quatre remarked smugly.

Heero merely grunted as he took his seat. “We're going to the market tomorrow.”

Aqua eyes glinted, and the blonde blinked in curiosity, “He's making his move so quickly. Didn't I tell yo-“

“I'm just showing him around town,” Heero interrupted, his voice slightly louder in his defense.

Quatre smirked, “Isn't that what servants and maps are for, prince?”

“Hn,” was the hollow response, and Heero decided he didn't like the innocent look the blonde boy was giving him.

The clock chimed for the first time, indicating the end of the ball was coming closer. Heero nodded to Quatre, signaling their departure. Standing, he walked to his mother and bent to kiss her cheek; nodding to his father before he turned to leave. Making his way out of the hall, he only turned back once to see Duo with a different young girl, countless others eagerly waiting for his hand.

Hastily making his way out of the hall he turned away too quickly to notice a heavy amethyst gaze focused on him.

Walking into his room, he threw off the uncomfortable outer dress of his outfit, settling on his bed once the royal finery was on the floor. Quatre smiled slightly, gently picking up the forgotten clothing and folding them to be picked up for wash. Once they were sat down, he made his way back over to the boy on the bed, “While you were busy with Prince Duo I took the liberty of noticing one of his acrobats…he's quite handsome really,” he said as he sat beside the brunette.

Heero's lips curled barely at his predictable friend. He turned his face to look at the other youth, his eyes asking him to continue.

“Well, the entourage was a bit much but this boy…” the fair-skinned boy fanned himself dramatically. “He was taller then the Prince, with eyes like the forest and a face almost as pretty as yours.” he teased.

Blue eyes closed as he listened to the older boy talk, his soft voice lulling him to sleep as he thought about the next day with anticipation and nervousness.

Stretching once he'd retired to his room, Duo turned to grin at the boy beside him, slinging an arm across the broad shoulders, “So what'd you think?”

The taller shrugged, closing an emerald eye as he walked away to sit in a rich armchair. He was quiet for a moment, but Duo knew he would have some kind of comment for the interesting night they'd had.

“He is beautiful. There's no denying that,” the youth finally responded, opening his eye to watch the other.

Duo's grin only broadened and he nodded in satisfaction, “That only makes it better for me.”

Turning away when the other didn't respond, the braided prince's grin fell, and a serious look crossed his face. He had a job to do, and tomorrow was only bringing him closer to it. He swaggered over to his bed and threw himself on it heavily, planning out the next day carefully. He knew exactly each districts' and shops' location in his mind and knew what ways to take that would make the day go by longer.

He sighed inwardly after his mind jotted down and numbered out each route carefully. In all honesty he had missed the shorter boy and seeing him again was nice, especially since he'd grown to be so beautiful…

Duo shook his head, earning himself a glance from the youth still seated in the chair. “Don't get distracted, my prince,” was all the other said before he bowed and quietly left the room, leaving Duo to his thoughts.

“Night Tro,” he waved, and once the door shut he nodded to himself and turned over to go to sleep. “I won't.”
