Chapter 3

Heero walked up the front walk to the Darlian's front porch. He could smell the enticing aroma of baked ham as he stood at the door. It reminded him of his mom's cooking and he closed his eyes and inhaled, smiling. Tonight certainly promised.

"Well, there he is.", Mr. Darlian came to the door and Heero smiled and waited for him to open it up and invite him in. "Come in, boy, come in. What've you got there? Oh! A bottle of wine! How wonderful!", he smiled and clapped Heero on the back as he ushered him into the house.

"Tessa, Heero's here. Come out and say hello!", Mr. Darlian sang out and Heero laughed. Mr. and Mrs. Darlian reminded him of his grandparents. He hoped one day he'd be able to say he'd been married for 40 or even 50 years! It amazed him to no end to think of two people being married longer even than he had been alive!

Mrs. Darlian came out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on her pink frilled apron and smiling big. "Hi, Heero!", she smiled. "I'm so happy you made it. How did your interviews go?", she asked as she kissed him on the cheek.

"Actually, only one showed. I had two scheduled. But the one was wonderful, just brilliant. She's almost a child prodigy, I'd say. Looks like an angel can play the piano beautifully!", he smiled.

"Oh, Heero, maybe you'll find a young woman to take care of you after all!", Mrs. Darlian clucked and pinched his cheek.

"Now, Tessa, young Heero has no problems in that department, I'm sure!", Mr. Darlian said sternly, frowning at his wife. Sometimes she could be a bit much.

Heero just laughed. "She's only 8 years old, Mrs. Darlian. I daresay she's the girl for me!", he grinned.

"Oh, Heero!", she said, sounding disappointed. Did he really look THAT desperate?, he wondered to himself.

"Let's go into the living room and have a seat, Heero, whilst Tessa finishes dinner for us. You can tell me all about your plans for these new lessons. I'm told you'll consider teaching our Relena basic piano; is that so or is that something Mrs. Darlian cooked up FOR you?", he asked.

They sat down in comfortable chairs and Mrs. Darlian took the wine from her husband with a wink at Heero. Heero looked around the room. Pictures of family adorned every available surface. He wondered briefly where the mysterious Relena was but soon was engaged with Mr. Darlian in a lively discussion on football.

He never heard her as she entered the room. His back was to her so he hadn't seen her either. His only clue was Mr. Darlian pausing in his story telling to cast a loving glance over Heero's shoulder. He knew at once that Relena had made herself known.

"Relena, come here, love. I want you to meet somebody.", Mr. Darlian said.

She made her way toward them with a soft smile on her face. Heero noticed she never looked at him, only toward her grandfather or a place over his head. He wondered how shy she was and if she'd even want to take piano. She looked to be about 17 or 18. He supposed it wasn't unusual for a girl of her age to either act shy or snobbish. She hadn't looked his way once. He sighed to himself. Mrs. Darlian obviously had been at work trying to find things for her granddaughter to do whilst she was visiting. It seemed Relena had no interest in him at all.

She walked up to her grandfather's chair and stood there, looking down at him with a soft smile on her face. It gave Heero a chance to notice quite a few things as Mr. Darlian was totally absorbed in talking to her and paying Heero no mind.

Her hair was a long, straight silken curtain of purest golden and so shiny that the light bounced off it. She was tiny but shapely. His eyes automatically taking in the curve of her breasts under a pale pink sweater and the swell of her bottom in a pair of faded denims. He had yet to see her face full on but just her profile turned to him made him realize she was a pretty girl for sure.

Mr. Darlian had taken her hand and was urging her to turn to their guest. Heero wasn't sure how to react. Was she really that shy?

When she turned toward him, the first thing he noticed was that she had the most beautiful eyes he'd ever seen. They were the clearest green, a most unusual shade and ringed by a fringe of thick lashes. Her nose was like a little button on her face, tiny and pug. Her lips were soft and pink, full and lightly glossed with a pink glosser. When she smiled toward him, he saw a row of beautifully straight white teeth that made for a brilliant smile. He would've been hard pressed to say exactly how old he thought she was. At first she had appeared younger, now he thought her maybe around 19. He wasn't sure. It was hard to tell; she hadn't tried to speak to him or even acknowledge he was in the room. He thought her probably spoiled as well as shy.

He got up from the sofa and extended his hand in greeting to her. It hung in mid air and he looked at Mr. Darlian as his hand fell back down to his side.

"Relena, this is Heero Yuy. He's our neighbor, the pianist at our little church and the school music teacher. All this for a young man of... how old are you, Heero? I'm sorry, that's rude of me.", Mr. Darlian smiled apologetically.

"Oh no, that's fine. I'm 22, Relena. It's nice to meet you.", he said and extended his hand once again.

He was surprised and a bit thrown off when Mr. Darlian put a hand to her back and gently pushed her toward Heero. She smiled, still not meeting his eyes but turned back to her grandfather.

"It's ok Papa, I'm ok.", she said softly and took another two steps toward him. "Hi there, Heero. I've heard so much about you. It's nice to finally meet the man my Grandma calls beautiful!", she laughed. Heero looked at her then back at Mr. Darlian, confusion on his face.

"Heero, it's ok, really. You must've wondered and I'm sure Papa and Grandma never clued you in. They seem to think it's a game to play trying to fool their guests. I'm blind.", she said softly and reached for his hand, found it with no problem and squeezed it within her own.
