Duo cursed beneath his breath as he sat down. Why was he doing this again? Une had offered him the job countless times and he'd denied her each time. What was it that changed his mind this time?
“Why hello Maxwell. Finally decided to come,” Une looked at her clock. “three hours late?”
Duo groaned. Maxwell, that was why. Not Schbeiker- Maxwell; as in he hadn't gotten married. Hell he'd down right refused to even date the girl, Hilde, to the very last month. It was because of her constant badgering and complaining that he had even caved in to go out with her when actually he held no interest in her at all. She was too needy and he was never able to really relax around her. After the first trial date with her it had gone downhill. In less than a month he'd gotten agitated enough to move out. Of course he couldn't do that without a job, and that was why he was here.
“Good morning Lady.” The corner of his lip stretched up in a smirk, a little sauce to show he was going to be as rebellious as he could get away with.
Une merely reached on her desk and picked up a packet of papers only to drop them in front of him. He gave her an incredulous look.
“I have to fill all this out?”
Something akin to a smug look crossed her features
“Why yes. You see, had a certain someone not been late I wouldn't have had the time to be bothered with finding this for you, but since you gave me so much free time I got it with no problem. Have this done and on my desk by say….” She was the one smirking now. “noon.”
“Noon! That's in two hours!”
“Well you'd best get to it then.”
Duo frowned. “ You've been trying to get me up here since the Marimeia incident. I thought you'd be creaming your pants to have me finally accept.”
“Maxwell! Language please!”
At Une's affronted look he put his hands up defensively, a sheepish look on his face.
“Sorry sorry Lady. You know me.”
She frowned. “Yes. The more you talk, the more stupid you become.”
His ears turned red at that, but he didn't respond. He decided not to test his luck, so as soon as he filched a pen from off of Une's desk he began to fill out his papers. Une spoke with him on and off inbetween pages, and offhandedly, he'd respond.
“Business go bad with that Hilde woman you worked with?”
“ You could say that.”
“ Your fault?”
“ Everyone's fault.”
“How so?”
“Because I'm too nice to say it's her fault.”
A laugh. “Oh I see.” A pause. “Have you talked to any of the other pilots recently?”
“Q-pid and Tro.”
“Quatre you mean?”
“Yeah Q-pid.”
A soft snort. “You know you're the very last of the pilots to join the Preventers?”
“Am I?”
“Seriously, you're the only one who waited so long.”
“Somehow I doubt that.”
“ Chang joined first, Winner and Barton joined together, though they help with finances and business more than with operations. After he recovered, Yuy joined. Relena tried to keep him as a bodyguard but he wouldn't have it. He came straight to me as soon as he was well enough. Surprisingly enough Zechs- Duo watch what you're doing!”
Duo had against his will jerked his hand, leaving a long black mark against the paper. Une sighed muttering about `how he was causing worry already', before getting him some whiteout for the page. Once the mark was decently removed she kept on.
“ Where was I? Oh yes, Zechs. Well he surprised me when he came back only just a few months ago requesting a job here. Staying in the shadows wasn't for him, especially when Relena was trying to keep such tight control on him.”
“And you trust him?”
Duo had paused in his writing to show the seriousness of his question. Une looked back in interest.
“ You don't?”
There was no hesitation. “No.”
“Why not? He helped with Mariemaia and Dekim.”
“ That doesn't mean anything. He worked with you and Oz, but he was pretty damn willing to blow not only you, but the rest of the earth to pieces.”
Une nodded and rested her chin on her knuckles. “ That's true, but not only is this a time of peace- it's a time of forgiveness and new beginnings. How can one begin if others won't let his past end? That is only the path to war.”
Duo swallowed what he had been about to say. Une's words were wise, wiser than he wanted to admit. If it weren't for the fact that this was Zechs they were talking about he would've let it go…but…they were talking about Zechs, and he did not want to work with him in the building.
“Besides his past he's random. You can't predict what he'll do.”
The head of the Preventers gave him an exasperated look. “Maxwell, every single one of you pilots are exactly like that. None of you qualify as predictable in the least.”
“ Does he already have a partner?” He was starting to see Une was firm on this subject and wouldn't be easily swayed. He'd have to work with what he had.
“ Not really. He and Heero have not been assigned an official partner, and you will be the same as well. When a mission comes up that requires two or more for them I just pair them together. Same goes for you. You'll be paired with either Heero or Zechs when the time comes.”
“No the hell I won't. Heero, yes. Zech- not a chance.”
“Maxwell…Who's paying your bills? Where are you sleeping tonight?”
He got the hint. “Fine fine, but know that with a choice I'll pick Heero every time.”
“That's why you won't be given a choice. Now hurry up. You only have ten more minutes to finish this packet.”
“Don't worry about it. Here.” Duo pushed the packet toward her, tossing the pen beside it as he sat back. He had finally finished the damn thing.
Une glanced at it detachedly, only scanning to see if he filled out everything. Once she was sure every line had been filled she picked up the packet and bent behind her desk. Duo called out in shock when he heard the loud whine of a paper shredder.
“Hey what!?! What the hell are you doing?”
Une sat back in her chair once more, not a trace of remorse on her features. “ Well, anything you put down on that paper is already in our data bases. That information is obsolete.”
“ So why in the hell was I writing it!?!”
Une shrugged, if that was even possible. “ You were late. I have to make you understand that I will not tolerate lateness.”
All casualness had gone away and now she was giving him an even glare. “ You are to be on time to work from now on, and you are to address me properly. This is a business, not a hobby. The agents who do not know you need to be able to trust you, and so far your behavior isn't helping improve that. As far as trust goes, about every person in this building is willing to trust the other pilots, including Zechs, over you at any given time. Do not cause trouble and most importantly learn to cooperate and work efficiently with all your co-workers.”
To say Duo was taken aback would be fair.
“Une w-“
“That is all. You're dismissed. I don't want to see you until eight o clock tomorrow morning.”
Their eyes locked for a few seconds, and only moments later Duo looked away. Une's will was strong on this matter.
Duo got up tense and headed for the door. Just as his hand reached for the knob, a knock startled him and his hand wavered. He looked back at Une.
“ Answer it?”
She gave him a look along the lines of `well duh' and he opened the door. He closed it back immediately, or rather he would've have liked to. Instead he stepped to the side as Zechs brushed past him. The blonde didn't even seem to notice him as he handed his package to Une, explaining various things Duo didn't care to listen in on. Not one to pass up an opportunity, Duo left the room.
He was more than ready to leave the building, but first he had to go to the restroom. He'd actually rushed out of his house that morning, despite his lateness. His alarm hadn't gone off. That was why, five minutes later he was in the Preventer restroom relieving himself. Once he'd finished he washed his hands and walked out of the room only to bump into a familiar hard chest. He cursed his luck when an amused voice spoke to him.
“ It seems you are a master at collision greetings aren't you Maxwell?”
Zechs offered his hand to help Duo up, but the Shinigami pilot ignored it and helped himself up.
“You'll be working here now?”
“ Yeah.” He refused to even look the other in the eye.. This guy pissed him off beyond his normal annoyance. It was irrational, but he couldn't help it. Distrust was like second nature to him when dealing with the count.
“ Well I suppose you'll be partnering with Yuy soon for the next operation.”
“The next operation?”
“Hmm? Don't worry about it. You'll be informed about it later. See you around.”
Duo was more than glad to see the blonde go, but now he couldn't help but feel bugged about the stupid partnership policy of the Preventers. No matter what he said he had a feeling he'd be partnered with Zechs not once, but numerous occasions. Zechs may not have admitted it, but that was going to be a serious problem, at least on his half. He didn't trust the other man with anything, much less his life but funnily enough he would have to.
“ Guess I'll just have to take it day by day.”
He made a sulky face at the words, but accepted them. Looking around he was able to find the path he had taken earlier and return back to his apartment.

Well well I was able to make a second chapter. Was it disappointing? I hope not. It's hard to catch interest in the beginning chapters, so I'm sorry. Really though I would like to thank every single person that reviewed, because at the times I felt like being lazy a review would come in and I'd remember I had to write for this. I'm so glad a lot of you were interested. ^^ Please bear with me because I'm writing two other fics along with this and I have a lot of work from school. So if it takes a bit don't worry. Alright, and that's about all I have to say. See you next chapter.
