So wandering eyes calls me, finally. Wishing on seven stars and five satellites pays off in one fourteen minute jackpot.

"Hi," he says, "I'm in the colony for the weekend."

My heart is jumping wildly in my chest but I talk cold. "Yeah? So what?"

Like he thinks he can leave me hanging incommunicado for eight months and I won't feel resentful? Uh-uh, no way.

He says "I know you're probably mad at me because I haven't called in such a long time. I had some shit to sort through."

I shift the phone from one ear to the other. "What kind of shit?"

"Well, most of it was about Heero. I was still sorting through the break-up, and then we got back together."

"Yeah. I heard."

"I needed to be alone for a while."

"But you weren't really alone," I say pointedly. There's an uncomfortable silence and I think I can hear him shift from foot to foot before he speaks again.

"So, what's going on? I haven't heard from you in a long time."

"Nothing." Asshole.

"Right. Something's obviously bothering you." He sounds like he's starting to get annoyed. I don't care.

"Yeah, well. No big deal. Just some issues I have to deal with."

"You mentioned that in your e-mail. The last one you sent me."

I knew I shouldn't have sent that e-mail. Whiskey is not my friend. "Yeah, the bitchy one. I tried to be humorous about it."

"You seemed pretty hostile."

"Sorry. I forgot that e-mail is not the place to vent frustration."

"Yeah, it's usually considered pretty bad form."

Fuck, he leaves me in the lurch and then comments on my manners? "Like you never do anything in bad form," I snap.

"Me? What did I do?"

"Nothing."

"Well, obviously I did something to offend you."

"Well, you did. I think it's bad form to tell someone one thing and do another, and never tell that person that the situation's changed."

"What're you talking about? I mean, I think I know where you're going with this, but I want to be sure."

I took a breath. "It's not that I'm not happy for you and Heero, but you told me that you two were definitely not getting back together. And I thought ... I thought we had something. But then you said you needed to pull back. You stopped hanging out with me, and got back with him without telling me. It sucks that I didn't know for sure that you two were back together until last month. It sucks! You should've told me!"

I imagine him clenching his jaw. I'm sure I've pissed him off now. Will he yell at me for presuming so much? Will he hang up and never call again? His voice cuts my ruminations short.

"Hilde," he says. "You're right. I'm sorry."
