Wufei's Justice

Prologue

The woman was driving him crazy.

Wufei Chang glanced over his shoulder at the blonde seated at the shuttle's controls behind him. She handled the manoeuvring thrusters delicately, positioning their craft against the docking ring of the small satellite they were assigned to check on, with precision.

"Docking complete," she said a moment later, her fingers dancing over the controls, shutting the drive system down.

It was the most she'd said to him all day.

"Confirmed," Wufei answered automatically, activating the atmospheric regulator in the docking bay and connecting the shuttle's internal sensors to that of the satellite's. "All satellite systems read green."

He waited for her normal response. A wager on how fast they could get the work done or a dry comment on the low jobs Preventers seemed to pull when things were quiet. But she said nothing, nodded once and left the cockpit. Wufei followed, gathering up tools along side her. It wasn't until they entered the satellite that she spoke to him again.

"Do you want the data banks or the sensor logs?"

Spoken politely, in a flat tone that indicated no emotion at all, how could he take offence? But he did. Wufei was deeply offended. After almost two years of working together Sally Po was treating him like a stranger, more often than not, like he wasn't event there.

"Sensor logs," he answered, looking directly into her eyes. "I want to find out what's going on."

She blinked.

He held her gaze a moment longer then turned away, floated a few feet to the sensor panel and tapped out the security code to gain access. A second later he saw her move out of the corner of his eye, getting to work on the data banks.

He smiled grimly, hoping that his declaration of intent had been received. He would find out why she hadn't spoken more than a sentence at a time to him in two weeks. And nothing at all that wasn't work related. He'd asked if she was feeling all right a few days ago and received a blank stare and a clipped "Of course" in response.

He'd been shocked.

That was not how Sally behaved. She was not a chatty woman, but neither was she quiet. She would frequently make some comment on the state of peace, politics, or the price of pizza on L3 that would have them trading opinions for an entire day. Sometimes longer. She teased him gently. Unlike some, who didn't understand his views on justice and honor, she knew and comprehended how he felt, understood what motivated him, and respected his need to do the job he was doing. Just as he respected her.

So, why was she behaving as if he were dead to her? What had happened two weeks ago that could so change her attitude? Wufei downloaded the sensor logs into his laptop, vowing to find the answer.

Sally Po was about to find herself under siege.

This was war.
