Author's note: Tanashi- ...I can't think of what to write for this part. I've already got things planned out, just not the essential parts in between...

Layli- I'll help! After all, I AM your muse.

Tanashi- What if... no, that won't work. How about... oh, wait, that wouldn't work either. Does this... ugh, no...

Layli- Need inspiration? That's what I'm here for! Here, try some of my all-purpose pixie dust!

Tanashi- All-purpose, huh? Doesn't seem to work on writer's block.

Layli- Okay, how about a cute picture of Quatre?

Tanashi- As cute as he is... *blows a kiss at the picture* it isn't working. -.-

Layli- I know! *a mallet appears in her hand and she hits Tanashi over the head with it*

Tanashi- Ooooh... *whirlies for eyes* I've got it! ...look at the pretty sparkles...

Layli- *quickly hides her mallet*

Tanashi- Ahem. Anyways, if you haven't noticed, I haven't updated this story since... a bit before Christmas, I believe. I'm sorry?

^^;; Here's chapter one! *throws it out and runs*

Layli- Enjoy!

Chapter One

By: Tanashi

Quatre blew his bangs out of his eyes. He needed a haircut. Sitting against a rather unstable tree in the middle of a forest for five hours wasn't really his idea of fun. He contemplated throwing rocks at a tree, but then thought better of it when he realized that it might actually hurt it. There was also the possibility of missing and hitting a poor helpless animal. He sighed. Trowa had decided that it would be better for both if they signed up separately, and Quatre had agreed with it. Checking with his internal clock, he realized that he still had about an hour to go. He fingered a strand of his now red hair, enchanted by a spell that he had learned from a mage that had been passing through. His eyes were enchanted as well to appear the color of a garnet. His complexion was darker, also courtesy of a spell.

He glanced up at the darkening sky threatening rain. Dark clouds blocked out the sun, starting to lightly drizzle. With a sigh, Quatre picked himself up and went off to find some shelter.

Duo frowned as it started raining. Being stranded in a forest just as it was raining wasn't exactly the best thing to ever happen to him. And he also managed to lose Heero in the process. The two had agreed that if they got separated, they'd find their own way to the registration camp at the border and meet there. The weather seemed to have a different plan. It was soon pouring, and Duo found himself drenched in three seconds flat. After a few more minutes of walking in the pounding rain, he spotted a rather conveniently located cave. As fast as humanly possible, he ran for the shelter.

The cave was rather small, as far as caves go, and there weren't any adjoining caves connected to it. To Duo's surprise, he was now sprawled over something warm. Or rather, someone. One who was just tripped over and fallen on was not expecting to be staring at the ground while getting soaked by an unknown person who had just been out in the rain. Quatre was no exception.

"Oof!" he managed to let out just before he made contact with the ground. Duo didn't move from where he had fallen on Quatre, his body not responding to his mind's command to get up. Quatre sighed inaudibly. "As much as I love lying on this uncomfortable floor, getting soaked again, I would greatly appreciate it if you would get off of me, please."

Duo's eyes widened and he quickly scrambled off the boy. "Oh! I'm sorry! See, it's raining cats and dogs outside and I was getting really, really wet and then I saw this cave, so I immediately zoomed in on it, but I didn't know there was someone in here already, so I'll go if you want me to and..."

The red-head stood up and cut the rambling boy off. "No! No, it's no problem. I was just caught off-guard. I really wasn't expecting someone to be out here in this weather, that's all." He offered a smile. "I'm Q- I mean, I'm Kat. If you value your life, don't ask what my full name is."

"Well, howdy! Solo, at your service." Duo gave a mock-bow. Ten minutes later and the boys had settled down around a fire that Quatre had going. "So, where are you headed to?" Duo asked, starting up a conversation.

Enjoying the warmth of the fire, Quatre nearly missed the question. He blinked, taking a moment to let it sink in. "Oh! I'm heading for the border enlisting station. What about you?"

A grin made itself known on Duo's face. "What a coincidence! I'm heading over there myself."

Quatre couldn't help but smile. "Really? Well, then, at least now I know someone."

"Yep." Duo just barely managed to suppress a yawn, but it didn't go unnoticed by Quatre.

"You should go to sleep." Duo opened his mouth to protest, then shut it when Quatre shot hima warning glance. "Don't worry about me. I'll take first watch, all right?"

Duo nodded. "Fine." He stretched out on the floor, rolled over, and promptly fell asleep.

Something bright was bothering him. Duo peeped open one eye, then shut it. Bright light. Too bright. He sighed, rolled over, and sat up, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. He spotted Quatre at the entrance of the cave, watching the sun rise over the trees. "Why didn't you wake me up?"

Quatre turned to look at him, a smile gracing his features. "You're up!" He pointed to a plate set out next to him. "Breakfast. Eat."

Duo complied, not bothering to argue when his stomach was grumbling from lack of food. He finished off the plate, then joined Quatre at the cave entrance. "So why, exactly, didn't you wake me up for my shift?" he asked, sitting down next to the other boy.

His companion shrugged. "You looked so peaceful, so... comfortable. I didn't have the heart to wake you up." He smiled. "Enough of that. We should be heading to that camp, shouldn't we?" He got up and picked up his bag, checking the ashes of the fire to make sure it wouldn't start up again.

Duo nodded. He stood up and stretched. "All right, then. If you won't give me a straight answer, fine. I'll find out sooner or later." He winked, then followed suit. "Lead the way," he told Quatre, gesturing. He followed after Quatre, who had rolled his eyes before taking the lead. Tucking his hands behind his head, he fell in step with Quatre. "So, any particular reason you joining the army?"

"Just felt I couldn't just sit back and watch, that I had to do something, you know?"

Duo nodded. "Yup. Sure do."

Quatre tilted his head, sparing a look at Duo. "What about you?"

"Action, adventure, girls. Do I need to elaborate?" He grinned.

A laugh escaped from Quatre. "No, no, no. I think that's good enough." He squinted, spotting something on the horizon. "I think I see the camp. It isn't that far off."

The other boy looked in the direction Quatre was looking. "Hey... I think you're right." He grinned as an idea popped into his head. "Race ya!" he yelled over his shoulder as he started to sprint, leaving behind a confused Quatre.

"Hey... that's not fair..." Quatre sprinted after him. "You cheated!"

Duo tagged the wall of the building, letting out a victory cry. "Woohoo!" Quatre wasn't that far behind and was soon standing next to the elated boy, out of breath. "Hey, buddy, breathe!"

The red-head smiled, his breathing back to normal. "I'm fine now. Shall we go in?" he asked, looking pointedly at the building that Duo had tagged.

"After you," Duo said with a flourish. Quatre shook his head and stepped inside the wooden building with Duo right behind him.

He walked up to the desk. The man didn't even bother looking up. "Name?"

"Kat."

"Age?"

"16."

"Take this and hand it to the officer in charge, Lieutenant Chang." Quatre nodded, even though the man couldn't see it. He stepped aside to let Duo approach the desk.

"Name?"

"Solo."

"Age?"

"16 as well."

"Take this and- aw, heck with it, you already know."

Duo took the proffered file, then grabbed Quatre with his free hand. "Let's go!" Quatre let out a soft sigh, letting himself be pulled outside by the energetic boy. The long-haired boy looked around the camp. "Oy!" he called out. "Which of you here is Lieutenant Chang?" Quatre slightly cringed at the boy's tactics of finding someone.

An oriental male scowled at Duo, swiftly walking over to the pair. "Haven't encountered one like you before," he said dryly. "What do you want?"

"Man at the desk told us to give you this." He grinned, handing over his file.

The black-haired boy flipped through the folder, then handed it back to Duo. He took Quatre's and did the same. "Both of you are assigned to tent 127. Just follow the tents. They're numbered." He shook his and walked off, mumbling under his breath about idiots with too much energy.

Quatre stifled a laugh as Duo shot a glare at the lieutenant's back. "We should go find that tent."

Duo nodded. "Right! Let's go!" He bounded ahead.

A few minutes later, a victorious cry sounded out. "I found it!" He waved his arms as a signal to Quatre. A lot of stares were directed at Duo.

Quatre sighed, shaking his head. "I don't know him..."

TBC...

Tanashi- I would have made this chapter longer, but then it would have taken even longer, I'm afraid.

Layli- She's just lazy.

Tanashi- Hey! That's not very nice!

Layli- I know. ^^

Tanashi- Hmph. Oh well. Hopefully, I'll get inspiration for the next chapter soon. Hint hint.

Layli- *looks around innocently*
